    Good info, really helped me out. Luckily I live in a hot climate, so I don't need the choke except for the middle of winter. Carbs still seem like black magic, but I'm slowly understanding them more and more.

    Thanks for the guidance. Crazy but different videos have different meanings for "choke off" and "choke on." Need to hit pause and work it through in my mind. Or maybe my mind needs a choke.

    Ha!…your carb collection looks like mine, except mine are mostly snowmobile. Well…not necessarily on shutting off choke as quickly as possible. Depends on temps. Take snowmobile for example. You dump that choke after starting your gonna be starting it again, and again. I just worked in a 2015 KQ400asi. It’s fuel injected and has a choke. In extreme cold manual says start with choke, balance elevated idle with choke and leave there until temp light goes off. Took 10 minutes in -10*f for that to happen.yes until temp light goes off…it’s temp light is for too cold of conditions only. No temp light on high temp. Asked 2 Suzuki shops about it. They had no idea, couldn’t believe it until I showed them the pic on my phone from right out of the owners manual.

    We have to use the choke all the time, because carbs work like sh1t.
    If it's not ethanol gunking up the jets, it's air valves that fails, rubber that rots, trash in the fuel line, float needles not working right, floats without an adjustable tab so we can't adjust the float height, you name it, carbs work like total shlt no matter how many times you clean and rebuild them.

      Yeah for small engines, they are constantly getting eaten up. But hey it pays the bills..lol..They are all going to be FI soon so we'll have new issues to deal with.

    I always wondered about the funny engine noise while cold starting using Choke i always thought of turning off the choke soon as the engine starts and using small throttle to warm up so is because of to much gas dumping i understand now

    Air leak. Air boot. Air filter. Fuel mixer carburetor. Intake manifold. Air leak. Intake manifold meets the engine. Throatol cable. If you leave choke up and it will cause more problems in the intake gas flow.

    hi thankyou man this helped a lot. i have a mini bike and whenever i start the bike with the choke on and flip it to off the bike dies almost right away and if i try riding it like that it bogs out like crazy and back fires a lot. but when i ride with it up it rides a lot better so i’m a little confused. i have a 28 mm nibbi slide carb

    What is that screw with a spring on it under the choke thinhgy at 2:32? Cuz I seen that on my bike and I wanted to turn it to see what it does

      Oh hell yea so I can mess with it and not screw up the timeing on the bike? I just bought a 1997 yamaha royal star and I’m terrified that the carburetor will break soon.

      @@rayslife4k You're all good, it won't hurt anything, it will just raise and lower the idle. Try to set it around 1000rpm

    On my Suzuki VS 800 the choke seems to move back in on its own after a short time. Seems like it is regulating itself.

      Yes, that's usually a sign of a clogged pilot jet, a mis-adjusted mixture screw or an idle set too low. Start with cleaning your pilot jet first so you can see light through it.

    Question, am I able to keep the choke half way open or closed, will it mess up the carb or anything?

      @@Boggerridertao An enricher half way pulled will dump more fuel in the carb body. It won't hurt the carb but it will be making it run richer. Just clean the pilot jet so you don't have to do that.

      @@retromototoys Usually caused by a clogged pilot jet, just tilt the carb remove the lower 17mm and remove and clean the pilot jet.

    Good video. My 03 harley, pull the choke, starts up. Push in the choke, wants to stall, yesterday in the heat, bike felt like it was running out of gas, hesitating, souttering a little. But ive been keeping the choke on, and it seems to almost push itsrlf back in as its necer in the same position nxt time.
    Anyways. The sputtering and hesitation yesterday is all new. I did run it completely dry of gas like a dumbass last week not understanding the petcock settings. Anyways, any suggestions????. Besides getting bent over at Harley-Davidson. I do alot of my own wrenching on my bikes

      Yeah, clean your pilot jet. If it's clogged you'll need the choke on to compensate. It's a classic symptom.

    So if I have a carburetor with an enricher choke, would I be able to have my carburetor jetted lean for really high altitudes and use the choke while I'm at sea level to keep it running rich enough to not burn up my plug or run too hot? Or would that not work while the bike is actually going down the road because it's using the mid-range and high range Jets and it wouldn't be affected by the choke?

    Hi! In summer my dirt bike (Avantis A5, Nibbi PE-30 carb) won't start on choke, however, it starts easily with the choke off and runs great, is that normal? In winter I had to use the choke as recommended: cold start with the choke on (otherwise the bike wouldn't start), then turn it off within a minute or so.

      Yes that's fine, it's probably a little rich on the pilot circuit but nothing I would adjust if it runs good every other way.

    I got an interesting problem on Yamaha TTR600 kickstart, kicking in on enricher on or off i not a problem but closing the enricher always dies on me. Carb is clean and adjusted, what an I doing wrong?

      That's usually either a clogged pilot jet, improperly adjusted mixture screw, idle to low, or low compression. Recheck the carb then do a leak down test on the engine.

      Worst thing that could happen is it will foul the spark plug and stall the bike.

    So I am new to motorcycling and my bike is a Navi which has a carb. I rode it for 18 miles in about 45 minutes and I had the choke on the whole time because they told me to leave the choke on when riding.
    In fact when I picked it up from the shop the mechanic told/showed me that when you turn it off that the bike shuts off.
    it’s a brand new bike and I’m learning now that I’m not supposed to have the choke on when riding and I understand why that is because my snowblower I warm it up and I turn the choke off and it runs like it should. I learned the hard way twice why you shouldn’t run it with the choke on. So I’m assuming it’s the same for bike of course. I’m just wondering why I’m being told to run it with the choke on.
    Also there are other riders with this navi that turn their bike on w/ choke and as soon as they turn the choke off their bike dies.
    I spoke to another navi owner today who said he doesn’t even use his choke ever to start his bike. And that he leaves his petcock on.
    I am wondering then what is the true function of having a choke on a carbureted bike? if you’re not supposed to have it on when you turn it on why is it even there then?
    Now I’m really confused.
    I should have bought fuel injected

      So the Honda Navi has a butterfly choke, it's an actual choke unlike most that are enrichers. It creates more suction to help pull extra fuel during cold start ups. It should be turned off as soon as you're able to. If the bike won't run when the choke is off the carb needs to be adjusted if it's new or cleaned if it's dirty. If the shop is telling you to leave it on when you're riding....find another shop, that will wash the oil off the cylinder walls, foul plugs and you won't be getting full power out of the bike.

      Thx for your reply. I went to that same shop to actually talk to the owner who is the one who actually tuned my carb when they worked on my bike. He told me the same advice you just did. He said that my bike shouldn’t need to be started with the choke on and to try starting it with the choke off. He said though if it doesn’t start with the choke off, turn it on, start it up and then quickly turn the choke off and it should idle and run w/ the choke off just fine.
      He also said i don’t need to add stabilizer into fresh tanks of gas at any time until it comes time for storage over winter.
      Wow - there’s so much misinformation out there. Tysm for your help.

    2021 Yamaha 90, I need to leave quarter choke on bc without it dies. What’s going on there, cleaned that carb 100 times and still the same. Any help

      Sounds like your pilot jet is clogged, can you see light through the pilot jet? Or your idle screw is turned too far down.

    Hi please I use a new royal 125cc bike and realized that the choke is always down. However anytime I park the bike and return after a few hours, I notice drops of fuel on the ground and a strong smell of petrol. Is this normal or should I pull the choke up.

      That has nothing to do with the choke. I would look into the float height and that the float needle is clean and no debris is stopping it from sealing. The choke/enricher only works when the bike is cranking or running.

      It's to lean because either the pilot jet is clogged or water is in the fuel. Pull and clean the carb, drain and flush the tank and you should be good to go.

    what about electronic choke? i have a suzuki vs150 with electronic choke, i can't seem to cold start it.

      They can get stuck in the bore. Take it out, make sure it's fully retracted when cold and the fuel port under it is clear. Also make sure there is no corrosion on it. If you pull it out cold and it's extended, it's bad.

    What does it mean "as quickly as you can"? Choke open at startup and after one minute closing it? Or after the warmup of 5min just before starting to ride?

      As quickly as it will idle without it. So the way I do it is, pull the choke, start it and immediately start to slowly slide it to the off position without letting it stall. Give it a small rev here and there while doing it.

      Cable could be stuck, but most likely the plunger in the carb is seized.

    New to riding and bikes in general. I have a 2002 1500 Vulcan with a plunger style choke. It seems to close too fast, in seconds, and the bike dies. I have to pull the plunger open and hold it open with my fingers for a while until it warms up a bit. It runs great once started. It does have a nut to adjust, I just don’t know what normal is. Any thoughts as to how long the choke should be fully open before it closes?

      Just enough so it can run without it. There are detents in the knob that are supposed to hold it in place, they wear over time and the spring pulls it down. It's not supposed to go down on its own.

      ​@@nja3224I wanted to add, if you pull back the rubber behind the choke knob you'll see a plastic locking nut, a bracket and a larger plastic nut. Tighten these together and if it's a friction set up it will also hold the choke in place when needed. Tighten them small amounts at a time until it holds it.

      Doesn't sound right. The worst it could do is foul a plug. Sounds like your pilot jet is clogged. You could always put a new spark plug and see, but I would bet it's a clogged pilot jet.

      @@TepcoCycleRepair It runs a bit better with a new plug, the old clearly fouled. Still backfires and coughs, stalls when I try to rev it. It won’t move till the choke has been on ten minutes. It’s a 97 Yamaha wolverine with new carb 15 years ago.

    This video sort of gives me hope on my old Honda Fourtrax 250. It starts perfectly normal without the choke, doesn’t even struggle. But as soon as I engage the choke/enricher, it kills the engine or won’t start at all. Remove choke, and it fires up. This happens when cold at first start, or when warmed up. I mean I can rock without the choke, but say if I were to fix this where should I start? Thanks I’m advance for the help!

      I wouldn't worry about it, just don't use it. But what you're describing Is a sign of a rich pilot circuit. If you wanted to try to change things you would want to start with a leaner pilot jet. Your spark plug is probably on the darker side from a rich pilot jet.

      You’re right about the plug, did appear to be darker than usual. As for the pilot jet, I made sure it was clean and it looked to be a very tiny orifice/hole, kinda makes me think it’s in the smaller side to be honest. Hmmm 🤔

      @@lmt-adventures620 Pilot jet holes are always tiny, that's why they are the first to clog. The only other thing I would look at is to make sure the enrichment plunger is completely closing. So be sure there is some play in the cable.

      @@TepcoCycleRepair You’re right, and there could be a smaller pilot jet than the one I have as I’m no prior experience.
      While enrichment plunger was off of carb, I played with it a few times to make sure it was moving in/out when switched. Looks fine to me, but no way to tell for sure what’s doing inside of carb. Could it possibly be my tank/fuel line?? Right now I have my tank removed for deep cleaning, so I’m testing it using a gas container and a line to carb.

    Hey I got a question , I have a new yz250 and I have never used the choke to start the bike 🤔 had it for a while now and it's still starts fist kick Evey Time without the choke I don't understand if this is good or not 🤣 trying to understand why does this mean my bike is running rich ? And is it bad ?

      That means that your pilot is on the rich side. How does the bike feel rolling at low rpm? Is it gargling or smooth? If you're a trail rider are you getting a lot of black unburnt oil/fuel coming out of the silencer? Does the bike smoke when it's warm? Those are all signed of it running rich. The YZ250 is an awesome bike btw!

      @@TepcoCycleRepair thanks for replying, so I do trail ride alot but where I go you can really open it up as well and that is how I like to ride fast flat out lol , but the bike is very rough and violent is the best way to describe it 🤣 it also has very little top end pull , like when it revs out it's just sounds violent as if it would blow up if you keep it at a high rev , I only ever have a tiny bit of oil coming out the pipe, I jetted the bike down pilot, main, and power jet , seemed to be a little better up to half throttle then the violence comes back 🤣 it's just loud and has no power it's a Brad new bike I don't know what to do lol my local bike shop is terrible they won't help at all 😒 oh and it drinks gas like there's no tomorrow I checked the float it looked a little high so I lowered it a tiny bit and it's a tad better on the gas but still using alot ,when I was young I had a 125 never had any problems ran smoothly and had heaps of power and I never touched the thing it just came good from the shop 10 years later I got the 250 and it's running like a pice of garbage straight from the shop lol I know the yz 250 is a beast if a bike but I don't understand how it's like it is , sucks I might have to get a different bike 😒

      @@zackiaryruddick701 Doesn't sound right,.first thing I would do is set the carb back to stock for your altitude, float height and jets. Then adjust from there. You're bike is "violent" that sounds lean then drinks a ton of gas which sounds rich. I would just start over or try a JD jet kit.

      @@TepcoCycleRepair yea was thinking if a JD kit , but there something not right with the bike I'm just going to strip the bike down and inspect everything, I do have a few dings in my pipe only small but a few , thinking it might have a air leak from being knocked around , also can you confirm wich way the rubber Seal goes on the pipe I took it off and didn't realise it's different at each end now it won't sit on their property and there is nothing in the manual about wich way it goes on, it sits funny both ways and I get a little bit of oil coming out there
