What an excellent video! I'm in my early 70's and have been learning French for about 10 years. RIGHT FROM THE START, memorising stuff was my biggest challenge, but by trial and error and reading various books, I've adopted virtually all of Geraldine's steps, including the use of Anki. It all takes discipline, but the delight in understanding and accessing words, expressions, and structures when you're in a French conversation justify every minute spent on it!

What I teach my students is to just keep things simple. They all have the goal of speaking good French, so what they do is learn conversations. They watch UA-cam, Netflix and listen to conversations to learn the vocabulary they need to (1) understand conversations & (2) speak in conversations. This video here is good - it gives lots of detail. But for my students they like simplicity. Listening to and then speaking in conversations has helped them build a really strong level without learning grammar or memorising vocabulary. Hope this helps some of you. Thanks, Rory :)

This was so very helpful. I'm taking an online class and I do a lesson every day since March. I write out every lesson. I also have a small spiral tablet that I write down every new word. I take my tablet everywhere with me and when having to wait somewhere I review.
I find labeling objects in my home to be very helpful.
    Thank you for this post.

❤ Géraldine Lepère ❤ Comme Une Française ❤
Bonjour Géraldine Lepère, Comme Une Française.
I am 81 years old this month. Please include us much older folks. We love learning French, and many other things, for that matter.
People in their 70s, 80s, 90s, 100s + want to continue learning, anything. Cognition only goes when it goes. No sooner.
And, the French language ? ... Many of us love it.
Anyway, quand même. Me voilà !
❤ from Texas, USA in November, 2024.

Great advice as always Géraldine. I use an address book with alphabetical tabs. You mentioned it in a previous post and I find it works very well!! Thanks👍🏻😊

"Too old" is the worst excuse! I am in my 70's and re-learing French and learning Polish at the same time. And, yes--I have to write words for every Polish lesson. I also find myself translating the English into French and then into Polish. Interesting process! I also use two online learning apps for study--a paid one and a free one from my local library. The very difference approaches really help me to learn. For un chapeau I imagined un chateau--the "top" of housing types!

When being non native english... It's different many Danish words are actually similar in french😊 Paraply, aubergine etc. 🎉

English definitely shares the same heavy French influence, it accounts for at least a third of our vocabulary and we generally don't even notice it is there. I don't know if you're aware or not, but in the UK we call them aubergines too, in fact many of the culinary terms where we differ from US English, are usually because we default the one of French origin.

I'm sorry, I am sure and I hope you meant to say "energising", "enervating" actually means the direct opposite , "causing one to feel drained of energy or vitality"

I love that your advice for us English speakers is in English! That is motivating and encouraging. I will take your write the vocabs and phrases I'm missing. That retired word hit me exactly. Q: are there separate words in French as there are between parasol, sombrilla and paraguas in Spanish?

I'm not sure if this is true but it used to be big in study circles to use blue pens when trying to memorize something, for some reason it helps with memorization as well. try using a blue pen in your notebooks/flash cards!

I used to struggle with fourteen and fifteen - so for me quatorze became cat paws, as long as I had one word correct the other just followed natuarlly. Although I do sometimes have to say in my mind for example je voudrais cat paws pomme svp. So there can be a slight delay but it is quicker than going through all the numbers to reach 14 😅
