The problem with the radial engine truck is the cooling, as there's not enough airflow to keep it running without overheating and seizing for more than a couple of minutes. The fix was to install an oil cooling system that allowed the truck to make the five minutes or so needed to perform at big truck shows, and that was developed and installed by Radial Engines in Guthrie, Oklahoma.
Lets not forget that several cylinders are upside down. So oil will fill the combustion chamber. If you don't empty it out you can hydrolock those cylinders and do some major damage to the connecting rods and such! There's a reason radial engines went away quickly!
@@thecman26 anyone who uses radials should know to crank the engine over before engaging the ignition. When I was in college I watched a doctor who had just bought an old Cessna 195 (beautiful plane) blow out the lower cylinders when he forgot the rule.
@@thecman26 Radials did not go away so quickly, they were pretty common in the 1960's and some are still used today. The reason they lost their dominant market position after WW2 is two-fold. First, the advent of gas turbine engines with much better power/weight ratio, scalability, reliability and streamlining, burning a cheaper fuel, left radials with no chance in the high power market sector. And second, the introduction of flat-4,6 and 8 engines which were simpler, more streamlined and equally well suited for air cooling eliminated the need for radials in the low-power general aviation market.
Another example of a jet powered car is the Jaguar C-X75 prototype which had two small gas turbines which charged a battery that fed four electric motors.
The Beast did not have a Merlin engine, it had a motor derived from the Merlin, a Meteor tank engine, built by Rover cars. Early ones used Merlin crankcases taken from crashed aircraft, with visible cosmetic damage. The Merlin is single overhead camshaft, bevel driven with 4 valves per cylinder.
I'm constantly amazed at the creative, artistic, and mechanical engineering skills of people who design, create, and build machines such as these. Just amazing skills. Very impressive.
My buddy and I were riding our motorcycles to Vegas one day ( Phoenix to Vegas) and I believe it was a Chrysler that was powered by a gas turbine engine blew by us. We came upon it 15 miles ahead of us. The engine was scattered all over the road and they had a support truck cleaning up the mess on the highway. We tried to talk to them, but they declined to say anything about the car. Anyway thought that was interesting.
With automobile talent like this, what took us soo long to get a car on the moon? And why don't we have another car on Mars or racing around the rings of Saturn?
Mario Andretti was supposed to be the driver.STP was the major sponsor. The rules commission kept reducing the size of the intakes until it was no longer competitive. Like the Plymouth super bee and Daytona charger it just got away from everyone and had to be stopped. Both signaling the end of real competition in racing.
It's an old set of videos, but it's interesting to watch special cars and never show how they drive on the road and how they accelerate! Drive on the spot so slowly and carefully! When I drove an old refurbished Cadillac, I still enjoyed driving and accelerating and the comfort of the car and its power, especially in urban traffic, where it is often necessary to speed up from behind a traffic light so that other cars can also pass through the green light and no congestion. would occur in Europe's small towns, at intersections! The car is still for driving and a powerful car to enjoy driving, albeit a rare one!
I remember in the 70s a freightliner conventional powered by a P51 Mustang enguine, but they had alot of problems keeping it running right.and GMC had turbin enguine experimental cabovers
I love the sound of those jets but I doubt you could get away with that in a suburb neighbourhood. The high pitched screech would be as bad as open headers.
Aircraft engines are an incredibly poor choice for cars, especially the turbines. The use profile is completely different with the aircraft engines designed to put out 75% of rate power for virtually 100% duty cycle at a constant rpm and with as close to 100% reliability as possible. They were not designed to put around at 5 to 10% rated power output at vastly varying speeds. Use an aircraft engine if you wish to cruise at 175mph.
@@177SCmaro Depends if it's been de-stressed like the used to do with the Late SWW tanks. It didn't have the stress requirements of High altitude so the Meteor was quite a reliable engine but still had loads of power. If they were using them in full Air trim then yes they would be issues with the more erratic power usage in a car. The early Shermans used Aero Radials too. It had a good power to weight ratio but was prone to overheating when stationary due to lack of airflow through the engine.
The Merlin had to have Lake plugs in the exhaust pipes. Chrysler should have kept the basic body design of its production turbine powered car. It was sharp as a tack, and had those headlights we still love.
I've seen the Radial engine truck in person. They keep it at their man cave at the junk yard along with other projects. I don't think its open to the public. But they do have a radial engine sitting in the lobby that all visitors can see.
Jay Leno's car is cool, but the turbine runs on biodiesel, not cooking oil. The long chain molecules are cracked in the process of making the biodiesel, and methyl groups added on the chain ends. What results is a long way from cooking oil.
Pretty sure technically it would be a Meteor engine if it doesn't have the Superchargers. That's the one that would have been in the Cromwell and Churchill tanks. Still a beast of an engine though.

you noticed the bat mobil during start up there a clicking sound? thats normal on jet engines. Its the sound of igniter plugs its a large version of the spark plugs.

Fantastically interesting video, but please whoever is doing the information boxes that pop up, PLEASE leave them up long enough to read the information, they simply aren’t on screen for long enough.
i like the part on the jay leno car about it burning clean jet a,jet fuel is a kerosene liquid and still based on petroleum liquid,so how clean is it it would still have to emit co2
The bobbing information is irritating and not enough time to read. Real bummer.
In addition to the palsy camera work. Great content incredibly poorly executed. Indeed a shame.
👍❤️top
Remember reading about Gilda and the Turbine in my brothers car mags from the ‘50’s. Had to sneak em because he didn’t want me in his stuff.
Slow down the playback speed, but that doesn’t fix the wobble.

A car powered by a blowtorch-hot jet engine driving past all those bales of hay is comforting and reassuring.

Insanely smooth footage
Would have been cool to see" The Brutus" as featured on top gear.
the batmobile with a jet? I NEED!
Oh Yeah 🔥🔥🔥
The Cessna pick up is the best, the other cars were interesting
Dear Santa, I've been SUPER good this year!! All I want is that Batmobile.
From the B pilars back, Leno's car is sporting styling from a 1968 Biuck Rivera Boattail.
FYI, there was also a turbine powered Indy car. STP-Paxton Turbocar, 1967.
That batmobile is hokey !
Now that was a slice of pure cool!!!
I see cooling system nightmares.
The turbine even at low rev's sounds like a giant vacuum cleaner.😜😜😜

Someone please rescue the Merlin out of that monstrosity and get it back in a Mustang or Spitfire where it belongs.
Beautiful machines 🤩
Nice, hope you enjoyed, please share 🙏. Thank you!
I miss the Rover-BRM turbine car which ran at Le Mans in '63, '64 and '65.
Remember Preston Tucker's car was powered by a piston helicopter engine
I remember in the 70s a freightliner conventional powered by a P51 Mustang enguine, but they had alot of problems keeping it running right.and GMC had turbin enguine experimental cabovers
Every video this guy puts out is very entertaining.
I love the fact that when Jay leno is leaving, you can hear just a regular ol airplane in the sky and this beast is on 4 tires! 😃
3:30 probably gave the GT40 a run for its money.
PLEASE....AIRCRAFTS....is not a word
I love the sound of those jets but I doubt you could get away with that in a suburb neighbourhood. The high pitched screech would be as bad as open headers.
All we need now is a turbine-powered Knight Rider car now.
YES
Amazing👍👍👍👍❤️
Thanks and please share 🙏
@@CoolCarTv ok 🙏
Ok please corek my woork shop
Saw a old Dodge Power Wagon (WW2) up in Oregon with a big radial in front. Impressive!
The 70s were funnn. I remember art affrons green monster
it must be nice to throw around that kind of money and not worry about it
Some of these cars can literally blow away the competition
I remember seeing the Chrysler Turbine car at of all places a Chevrolet dealer. Central Chevrolet in Atlanta Ga. I was 16 and already a gearhead.
I saw the Chrysler turbine car rolling around Livonia, Michigan back when it was being tested!
PLEASE buy the camera operato a steady cam mount!!
“Ain’t Nuthin but an E thing baby”
if it fits its gold
Great video maybe slow down writing
God bless the gearbox inventor.
Leno's car looks like a cross between a Cadi and Riviera, they should make this car with a LS motor
Perhaps a good idea 👍
the camera man on that merlin wagon, LORD
That bat mobile looks like it has a pt6 in it.
Batmobile really legend...!!!!
That Batmobile would likely be more awesome with an F-15 jet engine
COOL 😎
Jay Leno and the French Fry car……👏👏🤣🍟
Simplesmente 💯 sacional valeuuuuuuuu

What happens if you run it at varying, lower loads like in a car though? Does it damage the engine?

The M1A1 Abrams MBT runs on a turbine.

The kind of thing which Peter Griffin would drive into Cleveland's house, after he's run out of Petercopters and Hindenpeters.
There is also the Lotus 56 Indy 500/ F1 turbine car
@ 8:30 yep its sitting right in the main entrance area you can go check it out. It's a little east of Santa Fe you can't really see the from the road.
ALL DUDS.
*They were afraid that cars wouldn't have moved without aircraft engines????* 😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂
I think I saw that radial truck in Calistoga CA
Great video but, where is the Railton Special? How can you have a video of cars with aircraft engines without the fastest car in the world?
