I'm going to give my two cent here. First of all, the name Relic Ruin wasn't a official name, fans has named it and been calling it for years. Second, some has say that the levels has bits of graphics other zones, the wacky workbench past secret room, the background of stardust speedway past, all revolving around the Greek ruin theme like Marble zone. The D.A. Garden music (the JP version), some say that it might have been for R2 music, possibly for a Past or Good Future as it sounded more peaceful. Hope this clears up
Interesting, never heard of the Wacky Workbench room, and I know Relic Ruins is unofficial lol, I even said that in the video
Isn't Quartz Quadrant basically Marble zone? It has Caterkillers, the moving surface was re used in mania's lava reef which also takes ideas from marble, the boss tries to drop things on you idk
D. A garden uses cd audio, the past songs uses FM Audio
I'd guess the D.A. Garden's JP theme was the Present version, rather than the Past or Good Future version due to 1:33 into it sounding like it would probably be used in a Bad Future theme.
It was PCM iicr, the FM was used for sound effects. Past songs definitely don't use any DA sound.
Rainbow Ruins zone. That's what i think it was. First, it fits the level naming scheme: someone clearly had a thing for alliteration, and this fits into that perfectly. Plus, it fits better with the concept art, with the rainbows all over the place. However, we have no clue as to what the letters used would be. So it's probably wrong.
While it does kinda fit with the same naming trend as the official rounds, it could've easily been called something like Colorful Canyon or Troubled Temple
I feel like the concept art would have been the good future
5 years later, we now know what the zones name was, dubious depths.
It’s dubious depths.good guess tho
Those songs were confirmed by the creator to be fan-made remixes of Alex Lee - Take it. Mystery solved
yep
As far as I'm aware, not even fan made, they're just pre-existing Versions and Remixes of the song.
It's true, there is a video of someone unlocking r2 and the music is played in the background
This guy thinks he's a comedian
@@matthewlloyd365 you know the "mods" exist, right?
When you play sonic 3 to much till the point you call marble zone marble garden zone
LMAO true
Oof. I can relate
Is it possible they're related in some way?
@@almir-chan9570 Yes They have marble and they are annoying
@@MatthewScrap1011 always use to think Marble Garden and Marble Zone where the same just a different part of the zone
FYI, Sonic CD splits things differently.
Firstly, Zones are called Rounds, hence R starting before the data name
Secondly, Acts are called Zones, causing people to wonder why the word 'Act' isn't in the game and just assume it's used.
I really like the name "Marble Gardens" they totally should have gone with that originally.
Yeah that's why I instinctively say it at this point, always forget there's 2 "marble" zones
Whenever I run into you on UA-cam, I know I've stumbled upon some quality content.
Except Sonic CD uses a naming convention to use the same first Letter on both words.
I think they should use that if they ever make a sequel to Sonic 2.
Marble Garden was a Zone in Sonic 3...
Actually, the desert enemies were for a zone Taxman wanted to add to the 2011 port of the game, named Desert Dazzle.
Sounds like the sequel to sonic R

One quick correction: the "R" in the game's code stands for "Round." Also, one thing you forgot to mention is some of the unidentified parts of the Little Planet as seen on it in DA Garden mode.
Loader2K1 what about DA CLUB
Huh?
Yeah. "Round" is what they called Zones and "Zones" are what they called Acts. Why do you think the message "Sonic/Tails made a good future in Zone 1/2/3 came up when he passed the signpost?

Past themes weren't CD quality. There's no way the theme is real, so the name is probably bogus too.
Explosivebarrelsman they would be decompressed
@@badcatalexdecompressed has nothing to do with it. They were made on the CD'S PCM chip.
It's fake, it's a version of Alex Lee's Take It. There's like 10 separate official versions though, and I can't rememeber which one this is. I believe this one is called the Kleptomaniacs Remix though.
I Think you’re RIGHT. and Surprisingly WRONG at the Same Time! There are No CD Quality P Mixes of Zones but according to the New Prototype of Sonic CD that had been Just Discovered, Prototype 12/4/1992, There’s an Actual CD Quality P Mix for Palmtree Panic. Or in this Case “Salad Plains” This Proves the Fact that R2 has a CD Quality P Mix!
salad plains
I imagine that the sketch with the rainbow bg is of the good future version. The cut ending animation section of R2 has a bluish hue to the ground, while the sketch shows it as being brown. Other reasons for me thinking the sketch is a good future sketch is the rainbow
aw dang - i was hoping it was called Rainbow Relic Zone! damn, i have to photoshop this immeddiately lol
It was the ruined city in the OVA, right?
R2 has been elusive for nearly the full 20 year history of sonic game research. Short of any of the original development staff directly coming forward and outlining any unused/cut content, I don't think we'll ever really learn anything more about it. Even in the earliest known prototype (510) doesn't even have anything, iirc. Beyond that one developer diary video that showed the rainbow waterfalls, and the handful of sprites that Taxman posted 4 or 5 years ago, there has literally been no other revelations about it. I've always figured it was cut pretty early.
AGwolf2097 it should come back for mania 2. It was real u see the opening intro with the cut banik coming from the ruin area. Taxman should tell sega to bring it back. Put rainbows and everything.
We're learning more about it 👀
All of the sampled tracks are from various takes of Alex Lee's "Take It," despite how similar all but the past sound to Sonic CD
Yeah, mentioned that right before I played it
5:36 Sampled from Farley Jackmaster Funk - Love Can't Turn Around
that sample tracks were fanmade
+Francisco Sanchez Mercado Uh...what? They were all made by Alex Lee.
@@pepitopacquiao They're not fan made. They're not Sonic tracks at all. They are different versions of a song called Take It by Alex Lee. They're the Mighty Version, Marc Version, and Kleptomaniacs Remix I believe.
The overall impression that I got of "R2" is that its theme was similar to Marble Garden Zone in Sonic 3.
hey! just wanna point out some newer found info: first of all, the d.a garden track in the 2011 mobile port is confirmed to be the r2 present theme. we dont have any of the past remnants anywhere, however in the sonic wave album, there are 2 tracks, "techno power remix" and "sonic stream". these songs contain what we can sort of expect from the bad/good future songs. also, the real name confirmed by 2 developers is "dubious depths". also, the r stands for round
Thanks for the comment! Lots of people are coming in with new info; what's in this video is what was available at the time, but I'm super happy to see the story finally coming together after all this time!
@@tallestflash I completely agree! Every asset, info and and line of code is helping us get closer and closer to the truth of dubious depths! Maybe one day we might even be able to play it!
FINALLY someone is talking about Relic Ruins (R2)
6:11 So wait, you mean to tell me that the same game that contains the level "Wacky Workbench Zone" had quality standards for the level design? Furthermore, I'm expected to believe that "R2" didn't meet said standards? There are 2 possible explanations here: either this guy actually has no clue why the level was cut and just had to confabulate an answer out of thin air because he didn't feel that "I don't really know for sure" was an answer we'd settle for (he dodged a bullet if this is true; this fanbase has no chill and you know it), *or* R2 was secretly the worst sonic level to ever be created and the developers felt the need to return it to hell before they even got to the 512 prototype.
Sega hired artists to make a rendition of each zone in Sonic 1 for Sonic CD.
Either Yuji Naka or Takashi Izuka said that they were unhappy with the design of Round 2 so they cut the Round.
I believe it's a lie.
Matt EDG, WUT? Yuji Naka or Takashi Iizuka? Naka was working on Sonic 2 at the other side of the globe at the time, and Iizuka wasn't even around (his first Sonic work is Sonic 3's levels)
By quality standards, they probably meant things like the way the level looked and the music not fitting. The level design could've been the best ever, but the level itself wasn't really that great.
Perhaps it was bland compared to the other levels...
The best guess as to why it was cut is due to rushed development. This has been an issue with Sonic games since the very beginning. It's for this reason why Sonic 2 is missing its desert level, why Sonic 3 was cut into 2 games, why Sonic Adventure ended up scrapping the more ambitious stages for more streamlined ones and why Sonic 06 was released as a buggy mess.
I really like the "music" for the level, but I have a hard time believing it's real (which it probably isn't, as you mentioned). For one, the "Past" music for every level in CD, unlike the other Times, were sequenced music, like on the Genesis. The one played doesn't sound like it could be feasibly played as sequenced music. Plus, all of them have a very "USA soundtrack feel to it," and I doubt the need to make a track for a scrapped level would have even been necessary by the time work on the USA soundtrack began.
MegaMan7045 I was just about to mention the Past music, it's 100% fake, no doubt
I can tell you its fake. Jalex's dumb ass fucked up and thought these fan mixes are real
Lol even I mentioned they were 99% fake- I just thought they sounded interesting haha
MegaMan7045 i was just about to say the same
I really hoped they were real, but i am really loving these songs.
There is one thing to remember from the video is that the Marble Garden Zone is not the Marble Zone
This game already constantly fascinates me with everything it had and everything it didn't. Now I'm finding out about ANOTHER unused stage (the other being Desert Dazzle). After this video is done, I'm gonna look more into this
Actually, Desert Dazzle was made by Christian Whitehead for the 2011 remake, it wasn't initially planned for the original game. However, it WAS based off of an unused level from Sonic 2 called Dust Hill Zone.
Let’s see...
R1 = Palmtree Panic = Green Hill
R2 = ??? = Marble
R3 = Collision Chaos = Spring Yard
R4 = Tidal Tempest = Labyrinth
R5 = Quartz Quadrant = ???
R6 = Wacky Workbench = ???
R7 = Stardust Speedway = Star Light
R8 = Metallic Madness = Scrap Brain
Hmmmm
I think
R5 = Quartz Quadrant = Marble Zone
R6 = Wacky Workbench= Probably a part of metallic madness I mean look at the levels they have the colors
So here my order
R1 = Palmtree Panic
R2= Quartz Quadrant
R3= Collision Chaos
R4= Tidal Tempest
R5= Stardust Speedway
R6= Wacky Workbench
R7= Metallic Madness
Years later, now we know it was supposed to be called Dubious Depths and have JP DA Garden theme as its own
Also, the bad future theme for dubious depths is an unused song from a 1994 sonic album called techno power mix
The R2 level music, while it is amazingly funky, is actually fake. The original song is "Take It" by Alex Lee. It was also used in the Sonic 1 ROM hack _Sonic The Next Level_, where the song was recreated using the MegaDrive/Genesis soundchip.
(I love those alternate time remixes of the song though - I've never heard those ones before!)
Hearing someone mention 06 is like Rick Rolling someone in 2018(AKA the definition of beating a dead horse)
Nah, the real dead meme is this: goo.gl/XWz49K

I don't think that expression applies to meme usage.
Blaze Taleo it's not that bad tho
Wouldn't mind seeing whitehead doing a version of CD with Desert Dazzle and Relic Ruins included
The Tracks used are from a song called Take it and theres like 10 different remixes of it, jalex probably used a few of them and called kr *OfFiciAl sOuNdtRaCK*

OH wow thanks for the shoutout!
Lol, no problem, but- were you subscribed or did you just find this lol
tbh i stumbled onto this. but ill sub :P
He gave you a shout out Jalex...you better sub. XD
I think the Cut zone in CD was Dust Hill/Desert Dazzle (or at least had it's graphics). Those badniks do look like they'd exist in a desert zone. And that robotnik boss looks like it would drive along the sands.
A desert zone with ruins sounds interesting. I'm guessing those Desert Dazzle screenshots once belonged to the Past of R2.
Further evidence of this desert zone are extra areas on the DA Garden world map. And the background on Wacky Workbench Past (a canyon).
Desert dazzle Is a level that Christian Whitehead wanted to add to the remake of Sonic CD to be a replacement of the original R2
Not only that, but it was based on Sonic 2's level, not any unused level in CD.
Dessert Dazzle was an idea created by Christian Whitehead for the 2011 remake based off of Sonic 2's cancelled Dust Hill Zone. It has nothing to do with R2, unless Mr. Whitehead had planned on using its scrapped Badniks in Dessert Dazzle.
dude desert dazzle was supposed to be a new zone for the 2011 remake of sonic cd
Considering the Sonic fanbase found not just the _beta_ version of Sonic 2, but it's *_alpha_* one, as well as beta builds of Sonic 3 showing that 3 and Knuckles were going to be just one game and Crackers as proof-of-concept for Chaotix, I'd say it's just matter of time until they find an early build of Sonic CD with R2 in it.
some things end up staying lost in time, like the 1990 sonic demo or sonic mars.
Or Sonic Synergy
The music in this video that was said to be for R2 is just a bunch of remixed versions of Take It! by Alex Lee. No way that would have been in the original game.
Little more info has been found, but with the release of December 92 prototype, at least it is more confirmed to be real due to the time attack selection menu (Unfortunately, it only has Palmtree panic in its coding) Also, Palmtree panic was originally Salad Plain.
Where did the name "Desert Dazzle" come from? I know there was unused content in CD used for Mirage Saloon in Mania from a level known as "Desert Dazzle" which was cut supposedly because the western theme didn't seem to make sense to most of the Japanese audience.
It came from the person that made it, Christian Whitehead. He wanted it to be in the remake but it was scrapped because he ignored the multiple regional soundtracks the original had
Jalex's music is actually a remix of Alex Lee - Take It
For the music part, it's fake, the real version of the song is in the sonic cd soundtracks on streaming services, it's called little big planet and it's the present version of R2. As confirmed by one of the devs. Also for the reason why it was cut out it was probably because of not enough storage on the cd.
Ah yes, *Little Big Planet* nothing wrong there.
I always wondered why the cinematic showed that ruined area with enemies that never appeared in the game!
The songs can't be real because the "past" tracks use the Sega Genesis's sound chip, not CD quality audio like the "present" and both "future" tracks.
Judging from the Sprite work for R2's boss, you seemed to gloss over the yellow spring on the back of it. Would have this been a boss where you chase it, with the spring acting as something to push Sonic back?
Wow, I've always wondered about that animated segment in Sonic CD with the badnik that isn't even in the game, thanks for clearing up this mystery for me. And I love that level's music, it really does sounds like 90s club music. :D
I would have called it Rainbow Ruins personally.
It flat out wasn't relic ruins. It was something similar, but not that.
Those music tracks were actually used in a hack called _Sonic VR_ by MarkyJester, who compressed them to run on a Genesis. This was _way_ before 2016, so those tracks are definitely not “new discoveries.”
Fun Fact : the Real name of R2 was revealed
And it's Dubious Depths
Wouldn't trust Jalex too much. While he's a rather cool person, he was a fraud sometimes in the past. Also he loves to invent Zone names, which he also does for his stage mods.
wow ok
Someone needs to egt in touch with some people who worked on CD and ask them if the song sounds familiar or something.
"Depending on how you look at it it's also the true sequel to Sonic 1"
Well, no. Sonic CD is more like a reimagined Sonic 1. Also Sonic CD started as a CD version of Sonic 1. I also believe there was a CD version of Sonic 2 being made at the same time I'm not entirely sure. Point is, Sonic 2 is the actual sequel to Sonic 1. Sonic CD is it's own thing.
*marblegardenzone*
In my opinion
Relic Ruins Zone is gonna be a mix of Marble Zone from Sonic 1 & Aquatic Ruins Zone from Sonic 2
For Short
It gonna be Aquatic Ruins Zone with Marble Zone Level Design (Sorry...)
Funny that Round 2 has been semi-confirmed to be based off of Marble Zone thanks to the recent release of new level concept art in Sonic Origins.
@@johney-duh-one "new level concept art in Sonic Origins" seriously? Can i get a link or a screenshot?

2:50 where did taxman even get this?
Uhh... The ACTUAL music of the stage was reused in the DA garden I think
Even though that music is fake, it is good music, especially the "bad future"
Those rainbows could be rainbow waterfalls.
My idea for what the boss of R2 could of been
You race eggman and eggman places the spikes that you jump over or it will hit you. Eggman does a little boot that shoots little fire from the eggbike's back (yes I'm calling it eggbike) dont touch the fire or you may get hit. If you run into eggman or eggman drives into you. You will get hit. He takes 8 hits to defeat. The back spring on eggmans back will push you back when trying to defeat him.
Yeah I know my idea isnt really great and it sounds easy but the bosses in sonic CD arent good anyway
Sonic CD Levels Should Have 9 Zones Like
Palmtree Panic
Relic Ruins
Collision Chaos
Tidal Tempest
Quartz Quadrant
Wacky Workbench
Desert Dazzle
Stardust Speedway
Metallic Madness
Why we won’t be able to play this level?we are able to play a even finished hidden palace zone in sonic 2 and it was also a cut level that didn’t make it to the final release.So why not the same with R2 in one future?
Huh, I've never heard of this topic before... or you for that matter! But I like your presentation and now I'm super interested in this and whether or not anyone will pick up on it later. Nice job! I'm gonna check out a few more videos and consider subscribing. :)
Seeing as they zones all use the same letter for the start of the names, Palmtree Panic, Wacky Workbench ect... if it is a ruin zone and the concept shows rainbow waterfalls the 1st name that comes to mind is Rainbow Ruins
Why is this unused I'm going to cry
Well, the past music is definitely take because the soundtrack for past zones were never CD quality tracks. They used the system's sound board. This is also why the Japanese and American versions share the past soundtrack of each zone as they are not actual tracks on a disk.
On top of that, the samples sound WAY too "Desperate Modem Early 90s Remix" to be authentic. Sonic CD's Japanese soundtrack is way too unique and Ubiquitous. Its pure Early 90s Japanese Clubhouse Music. That sounds like it has a Footprint from that time period.
RetroBitGamer compression
It's all fake, all of the tracks are different versions of Take It by Alex Lee.
It's not marble garden ugh this video is both weird and good
I have figured out something: the levels in SonicCD goes in a similar patter as the levels in Sonic the Hedgehog
Green Hill: grassy hillsides Marble Zone: stone ruins Spring Yard: an amuesment place Labrynth: submerged ruins Star Light: an urban place Scrap Brain: industrial factories.
Palmtree Panic: grassy hillsides Collision Chaos: an amusement place Tidal Tempest: submerged ruins Stadust Speedway: an urbanized highway Qiartz Quarant and Wacky Workbenc: industrial factories
Coincidence? I think NOT!
The Marble themed zone is missing
You forgot to mention Metallic Madness
@@tateconnelley R2 would've been that
Since all past tracks in the game use PCM samples instead of redbook audio, the supposed past version of Relic Ruins seems way too high quality when compared to the rest of the past tracks.
Love your fucking 30 second intro next time I'm hoping it can be like 2 damn minutes!
Actually, the Jalex777 R2 themes are all fake, as not only do they "use" parts of Take It by Alex Lee, but most of said tracks are just compressed versions of different official remixes of the song. If I remember correctly, the Mighty version is used for the Present mix, the OPM Mix is used for the Past mix and the Good Future mix, and the Mr. Oz vs Klepto-Maniacs version is used for the Bad Future mix.
Yeah, I know, I said they were fake, literally said they were from Alex Lee LOL. They're just a part of the commonly believed history of R2, because a lot of people associate it w the name Relic Ruins
@@tallestflash Well here you go the unused JP R2 Bad Future Track or it unused track for another zone like the original R9 which is likely the desert area for little planet map
drive.google.com/file/d/1KqmdELk0KFnHUgB0jRq-Sl8ZB82PATRP/view?usp=drivesdk
The r2 thing is actually going to a desert the same one that was cut from sonic 2 so the CD remake was a desert themed zone and Christian white head wanted to add in that missing zone but Sega didn't want them to and what you see in sonic mania is the cut desert stage from sonic 2 and cd
No, Desert Dazzle was entirely created by Christian Whitehead specifically to fill the R2 slot in the 2011 remake and was inspired by the scrapped Dusty Hill Zone from Sonic 2
All the zones are shown on the little planet, so maybe relic ruins is shown on the little planet
Your editing is fantastic
I’ve heard the past and present themes before in a rom hack called Sonic the next level. don’t know if that helps proves if the songs are fake or not though I’d thought it would be good to mention.
nah that rom hack used it afterwards
Alright after some quick research I found two things first the song for the act ua-cam.com/video/CdL8fJH2mic/v-deo.html, and second thanks to a comment on the video states that the song is called “Take it” by Alan Lee and was made in 1990 so thus the song is proven to be fake zone music.
yep that was clarified
"nah that rom hack used it afterwards"

@@mattok101digitaltamer9 Late response but yes! I update this video's comment whenever I come back because it's still bringing lots of viewers to the channel xD (as in for yesterday's new video too!)
5:29 sounds super good :D
4:37 sounds far too advanced for a Past theme. All of CD's Past themes used the Genesis soundchip (Or something along those lines, I'm not entirely sure) instead of the CD-quality music of other tracks to give them a more "retro" feel. They couldn't be easily altered either, which is why the US soundtrack doesn't have any Past themes to call its own.
GuyWithThePie not the Genesis chip, all PCM/MIDI
Also, it would be just decompressed.
GuyWithThePie the CD had its own soundchip and they probably used it to save space on the disc, plus it could just be a concept music.
Yeah it's fake, it's just a remix of a song called Take It by Alex Lee.
Yeah. There are 3 zones if anyone didn’t know that weren’t released:
R2 Zone
Desert Dazzle Zone and
Final Fever Zone, the once planned final boss zone...
desert dazzle and final fever were levels planned for the 2011 remake but got scrapped
that lost level might show up in a future sonic game
Sadly, sega already confirmed: Sonic CD goes before Sonic 4, that means it's a sequel to Sonic & Knuckles

2011/origins ver: desert dazzle/ not dust hill zone.
desert dazzle was a level planned for the 2011 remake but got scrapped
@@crazyexpresso I know, most likely was planned to be the second zone in the game. Due to the coding. Or thats what I think DD was gonna be at.

Funny how you say that marble garden is one of your least favorite classic sonic levels yet you mistakened marble zone as marble garden in this video.
I forgot this and also I was confused when it skipped 2-1 in the stage select
i think if i make a sonic creepypasta ill base it around a unique set of levels inspired by the more obscure lost zones like snowbank mountain from sa2 and relic ruins staying away from the more well known ones like genocide city and desert dazzle/dust hill
Well the thing is antlions and snakes live in the desert and there is a cut level called desert dazzle
Let's hope it gets recreated in the future Sonic Mania updates.
I've never heard of this. Has anyone made a fan made rendition of this stage? I've seen a lot of hacks of cd and fan games influenced by cd, but I don't believe I've come across a rendition to it. If not, I hope this video inspires someone to make the stage.
Same, its a shame too, pretty sure it wouldve been cool
hey, i JUST posted a mod preview for Mania. You can check that out
Seems like Jalex777 is working on it ua-cam.com/video/HYTzIMz9dnY/v-deo.html
I really thought R2 was a level with two R's because if you haven't noticed already the zone names are all two words of the same beginning letter Example: Wacky Workbench(WW) Stardust Speedway (SS) Palmtree panic (PP).
The "R" stands for "Round" since that's what they called the stages instead of zones, which they used instead of "act".
I think the inconsist standards are because of different teams. Sonic cd was made by sega of japan while i think sonic 06 was made by sega of America. The songs were awesome though.
I want to see this level return 😁 cool video 👍
