@Noble Failures Yes for sure, he has brought some needed excitement to the music bringing some younger ones into the fold which will help to keep it this music going. Billy does go back to his roots and is not shamed to say so which is great.
This is my first time to hear Marcus King, and here's what I like- rather than using the song to show off his playing, he is using his playing to show off the song. This is where greatness comes from. This guy gets music. Obviously puts in the time. Great musician.
Look up some full shows.. seeing Marcus and his band is like going to church. Very much feels like seeing TTB with a sprinkle of some Little Feat essence.
Billy has said in interviews that Doc Watson is one of his biggest influences, and absolutely loves his music. Honestly, this almost sounds like his homage to Doc.
@@brianhuber1074 plenty of folks have covered this song, just like every other traditional song ever written lol. This was explicitly Billy paying tribute to Doc
Somehow Marcus seems to mix blues with jazz, if that makes sense and Billy mixes everything with bluegrass. They’re both old souls. Billy’s voice is unexpected but amazing and Marcus’s is out of this world. They also happen to be 2 of the best guitarists alive and maybe ever. Also playing maybe a hundred grand + worth of guitars
That's from listening to Django Rinehardt. Many finger style, improvisational flat-pickers are heavily influenced by roots blues, "gypsy jazz" and bluegrass. Spin them in a blender and this is what you get. This is the kind of thing someone an orchestral player, classically trained, likes to play in their spare time.
Yes! My first ever shout-out - that felt awesome! Thanks for doing some Marcus King, I'm gonna start digging around for the next one. What a great song that really showcased Marcus King's jazz influence. I just spent the last hour jamming along to the video and having a blast - gonna work on a little backing track for that one and really learn to nail those chord tones on the changes. Feels like there's a lot of possibilities to explore with this one.
I love both these guys, they are killing the music scene right now. Honestly they are such an inspiration to us all, especially those of us that are inspired to get back into music. I almost gave up the dream until I saw these two plus a few others. Now I'm back in the game, setting up my own You Tube page and playing music and writing songs again. Thanks to musicians like these two!!!!!
A few weeks ago I found Billy on You Tube by accident. Sounded a bit like Doc Watson. Sent Billy a email saying that. He is moving through America like a Storm! A much needed Storm!
I grew up with Marcus in Greenville, SC. We use to sneak him into the bars so he could jam with us and now look at him. Marcus and Billy are carrying the flag for the next generation. Well done boy's!
How does even attempt to measure the talent of these two pickerz? They play perfectly together yet taking nothing away from the beauty of the lyrics and the flow of the song. One of the best things Ive ever seen!

Both of their playing is obviously phenomenal in this, but Marcus King’s jazz runs are out of this world here. And I think he’s only 24 in this… those are things that jazz cats who have been playing for 40 years wish they could do and he does it effortlessly.
