SRV hands down goat....He played strings so thick it make most players fingers bleed if they could even bend a chord..A true legend gone way to soon, his best was still yet to come

One of the things I have found playing heavy strings is you don't need to pick very hard to get very clear notes. Pair that a with tremble bleed mod and the highs don't get muddy down sounding at lower volumes that they would without the mod.

SRV was my first love. I think everyone thinks of him as an absolute burner and aggressive but, to me, he is an absolute MASTER of dynamics. He sets up every blazing run through incredible control and the magical push and pull of dynamics.

It cuts right into your soul and demands your love which you are happy to give.
The world of music lost out when SRV died but he left part of his soul behind in the music we love him for and we were lucky to have him for the time we did. This is a gift of music that just keeps on giving and you never get tired of it.The way he played is as close to real magic as your gonna get and you can nearly see his soul.

This is one of my favorites I’m physically and mentally exhausted when the song is over. When Johnny sings it just adds another layer of texture. When I get frustrated trying to learn scales and play jazz I go back to this and feel the pure energy, power and heart that can be conveyed in I IV V with minor pentatonic. Never forget why we play not to show off, not to impress with our scale and chord knowledge but for that moment when we are tuned in to our soul and it just comes out and everyone can feel it.

  • @sheehy933

What always gets me about this song is SRV's vocals. The growl, the softness, the drawn out descent of the last word in the lyrics, etc. It is indeed a masterclass of blues. Multiple guitar techniques, not to show off his ability, but to add the feel the song is meant to convey. Same with his vocals, multiple techniques, the growl, the whisper, the descending drawl, not as a display of his vocal prowess, but to serve the song.
I often play along with this song, love it.

I've watched the Live at Montreux 1982 & 1985 DVD so many times I've lost count. Religiously when I was teenager, it completely capsulized me and threw me in a haze of goosebumps, tears, and amazement. I was new to learning the six string and it brought on a wave of inspiration like no other, it's one of core reasons why I really stuck to playing and practicing. Witnessing this was honestly like a spiritual moment if that makes any sense. I don't know, I regard it as some type of monolith in my life. Next to hearing/watching Jimi Hendrix and Tyler Childers for the first time, and receiving spare computer parts as a kid from my Drum teacher to build with.
Blew me away unlike any concert I witnessed or watched. The whole band is tight, in the pocket, bringing Johnny in at the perfect moments, and all the colors they are able to create is just incredible, truly incredible. Stevie's entire presence, chops, confidence, aura, and how it changes is fascinating too. The drugs and whiskey had a part, I'm aware, but it's more than that. Like the music started communicating with me on an emotional and subconscious level, almost hypnotizing, as strange as that sounds. It's hard to describe I guess.
Anyways, this particular song of the concert always blows me away. It was unreal to hear you say, react, and notice everything I did and have the same excitement/passion from it - as no one else I've shown and watched it with felt this way or was moved by it like I was. Happy to know I'm not alone haha.
Keep up the great work Mr. Palmisano, and thank you for being my guitar Teacher.
EDIT: Just finished the whole video and I can definitely say I that I felt it and will do everything I can to keep that feeling alive.

Playing a slow blues is the hardest thing to do and you nailed the genius of SRV with this . I've been blessed on a few occasions to become "weightless" and it is pure bliss. One night I was performing an improv piece on my acoustic 12 string and when I was done it felt like I just landed. Could not recall all that I did but the standing O I received told me it must have been ok, along with the feeling of the most incredible mental musical high.
A friend said they could see that I became one with the guitar. It is a spectacular feeling

Michael, I agree with you 100%. SRV was the reason I played from the first time I saw him in 1984 at 13 years old on PBS showing of Austin City Limits. My dad bought my my first Strat in 87, and I’ve been playing ever since. To this day I have also been trying to reach the Zen that was SRV, occasionally on stage I feel it. Thank you so much for this honest and genuine expression of your kindred affection for Stevie and the blues.

You have perfectly crystallized why SRV has been by favorite player for 30+ plus. Player and instrument as one. His ability to emote through the guitar had seen no parallel. There is a mystical, psychic, spiritual connection made with the listener as if by magic. I wept the day he died, I knew the world would be that much less. Thank you for paying such a thoughtful homage to one of my most beloved heroes.

SRV is the reason I watch video's like this and have become addicted to music over the years. I do play guitar, but realized years ago that attempts to mimic him are futile. Sure, I could learn the phrases and triads and all that, but SRV possesses something that can't be taught or replicated. The way he attacks the guitar from all angles, while being as dynamic and articulate as humanly possible, he is truly a once in a millenia player. When I first discovered him (early 2000's) i went around showing all of my friends and none of them got it. The best way I've ever been able to describe SRV is that if you watch his face, his body language while he is playing, you could be deaf and still hear it. The emotion/energy/rage/heartbreak/happiness/sadness that SRV can put into the guitar will forever be a thing of wonder. My favorite life performance of his is the Live at the El Mocambo version of Texas Flood. There is a note that he hits combined with his facial expressions at like 1:53 that gives me goosebumps EVERY. SINGLE. TIME. Plus, I've always been partial to "Number One"

It was a strat replica made for him by a guy in Dallas with Danelectro pickups and a hardtail. I believe the decal was just added as Fender didn't make it - but there are some custom shop replicas and I think John Mayer has one.

Man, You & I BOTH love all the little details that make songs like this so amazing. Even the non-musical parts like the backing away from the Mic, just looking cool, knowing everything you're doing is cooolllllll. ALL of the little details that completely captivate the audience!! Its like Harleys, Indians & all the classic cars are what made Route 66 what it's known for, the same goes with these musicians and blues music. That probably doesn't make a lot of sense, but I get it.

This is iconic and a special treat of Stevie at his best, clean and sober. The bands tight and unified. Adding the legendary Johnny Copland with a true blues classic,Tin Pan Alley is fantastic! Another high in thus performance is they are all really"on" in this performance. Everything is falling into place to higher degree than perfection. I love SRV and Double Trouble. Johnny Copeland is iconic as well. This is my go to for a real treat in guitar, vocals, the band for an off the charts blues performance. Thanks for presenting it and I admire your expertise as a guitarist and your ability to recognize a synchronicity every body can only hope for. "The channel is wide open!"

Michael I have been a Stevie fan for 40+ years, his playing is undiscriblable. It's pure, feelings in his fingers in tune with his mind body and soul played through his guitar. The band, Chris, Tommy and Reese along with Johnny were locked in. It's pure and a joy to see the appreciation you have for Stevie. Anthony

Thank you so much for sharing your love of and for Stevie, Michael. Like so many other kids perhaps, my first Texas blues musical epiphany had come at the tender age of ten when introduced to Lightning Sam Hopkins; but the second, and most lasting--lifelong, in fact--impression or epithany came when first listening to Stevie; I was aged just sixteen. As you rightly intimate, Stevie did not simply play the guitar, rather, he lived through his guitar and complete immersion in blues culture. In so doing, Stevie channelled his deep respect, admiration and love for those musical greats from whom, and with whom, he felt he owed so much. When we still--and we still do in our thousands or even hundreds of thousands, if not millions--revere Stevie, it is also with a sincere reverence for those same guitar heroes from the past with whom Stevie now jams for all eternity (that is, Blind Lemon, Elmore, Lil Son, T-Bone, Freddie, as well as BB, Muddy and of course Robert). And it is in that hallowed company of greats that we, his loyal followers (read disciples) remain convinced that Stevie was, and remains, the undisputed chairman of the board.

Dude! I already commented but i want to thank you again and how impressed i am that you really get it and can put into words the level above perfection and also recognizing the band and how tight they are with Johnny and Stevie. They were as tuned in and caught the channel right along with them. Clapton said Stevie was an open channel that never got "caught up or froze. Sometimes I go here and there and i have to stop and think were am i gonna go next. I never saw him do that. I believe he was an open channel. He never dried up!" Albert King saying, "There's a lot of guitar players out there. Some can play really fast and sharp but they got no soul. You Stevie, you got 'em both!" Wow! Just wow.
RIP SRV, thanks for the music and even more, thanks for all the love you passed our way ❤️! Great man with a lot of soul, beautiful soul.

and when the blues really works is when its like you're being told a story of something that had only just happened, like they're re-living this story, and your on the edge of your seat waiting to hear how its going to end. Thats what Stevie was best at, expressing that story with every beat of his heart.

Michael, you're exactly right. Wen I was younger, I was a Larry Carlton, Lee Ritenour, Steve Lukather devotee. I still love those guys and steal chops from their work. I studied music in college and did some Joe Pass stuff, and all of that highly technical stuff is great - as you demonstrate so well in other vids. But, as I age (I'm 59 now) I find that the blues is definitely where it's at and just love playing simple, but truly heartfelt and emotional, licks and grooves. Thanks for your vids - they're awesome. Peace!

You do a great job of explaining in words the tingle in the spine one gets when everything's just right and nothing wrong can happen. I've had one or two of those in my time as a player and I guess you can never fully express in words that feeling of 'the zone' but you get closer than most in this video. Nice work.

A great video breakdown Michael! Stevie becomes his guitar. You're right. It's the same reason I love watching Jimi play. It's not speed, or flash technique, but something more magical. Their guitars become part of them.
