  • In today's video we are kicking off the new year by wrapping up all the projects we have existing so we can focus on our dream home build. Last year we got situated on our homestead, and completed our tiny home build. This year our goal is to build the homestead, and get our new house 100% dried in!

I love how you keep your priorities in line. There will always be more work to do, yet you understand that there’s way more to life than just work. Trust me, one day when your kids are all grown they will remember how you made time for them. They will never forget that you cared enough to enjoy life with them!

    How water softeners work:
Hard water is defined as water high in minerals. In general, most minerals are positively charged. The water tank in your system is filled with resin beads (tiny negatively charged particles). Hard water passes through the water tank and attaches to the resin beads (negative-positive bond). This allows the water leaving your water tank to be free of minerals! When all the resin beads in your tank are used up, the salt is used as buffer to wash the resin beads. Washing the resin beads will release minerals making the resin ready for use again. So the salt is not actually softening your water, it's just used to release the minerals from your resin beads.

if the water is brown/orange it means that there is a lot of iron in. it is better to install a filter before the water softener to take out as much iron as possible as iron on the resin can lower the efficiency or lifespan of the resin.

    • @longwildernesswalks
      @longwildernesswalks 3 роки тому

If it ever gets worse or you start to see iron in your house, you might need to replace the fill media. It's simple and easy. That said, if the iron is too high it will burn through your media fast. If that ever happens, consider getting a Filox filter in front of the softener. This media bed is cheap but super effective at iron removal and will extend your softener cycle by another 50%. Just some real-life experience I thought I'd share with ya'll. Have a great day!!

We are a horsey family in England, I used to buy my daughter lots of wellies (rubber boots) over the years and they never lasted. Even the more expencive ones. My local feed store told me they crack when they aren't 100% rubber. A lot of cheaply made boots are made with chalk in them and so crack. But if you make sure they are 100% rubber. They will last for years. Mine are 5 years old and still going.

Being able to spend every minute with your family in such a beautiful place and not have to leave every day and work for someone else just made you a rich man. I will admit, I thought my boy was a seasoned home builder, but then I skimmed through a few videos and learned he learned by doing. I've half remodeled both our previous homes, but I can tell my boy's work ethic is supreme. My buddy moved to Idaho for a year and loved it. It's not for everyone he says, but if my wife and kids ever agree to do a cross-country camping trip, can we hang on your property for a day or two in tents? 2 adults and 2 kids, your age, currently bleeding money living in a top rated town... for our kids.

Hey guys, I didn't read through all the comments. So I just wanted to share some knowledge with joist hangers. I've used screws all the time in the past. One day I had a service call to work on a piece equipment at a construction site. I notice the guys were pounding nails in, instead of screws, so I asked. I was told they use joist hanger nails because they will not break. Screws are made of high carbon steel so they break easy. The guys showed me how easy the screw breaks. I never knew. So I'm just passing down some knowledge that was passed to me. Keep up the good work guys.

When you have even a reasonable amount of space, retractable stairs take away a large part of the functionality and use of the storage area. Fine for items that very seldom get used but it gets old and bothersome very quickly. The floor and stair area still needs to be kept clear where the stairs land too.

Having that much inside space to work in is amazing! Unheated can be a bit of a bummer, but you are out of the wind and elemements. We do have have a couple of large barns, but they are full of haying equipment and cattle!
I wish we had the presence of mind back in the 70s to start the original homestead with a pole barn. It would have saved so much out of our entire effort! We did build a 20x30 workshop on an Alaskan slab, with a 4' knee wall. We lived in it while building the house. That said, we had no children. It was fine for the two of us.

Finally the best insulated boots to get, I always made sure my boots were good to -20f. My job sometimes was standing in one place for over 20 min. You know your dressed right if you don't get cold doing that. Of course layers off as you heat up.

    Hi from Scotland, UK.
Just came across your channel which is fantastic.
It's been a dream of mine to go off grid for years but lack of finances curtailed that. It is so expensive to buy land here in the UK alongside gaining planning permission.
Anyway channels like this keeps my dream alive even though time is not on my side anymore.
There is another Idaho offgrider I've been watching for over 6 years although she has been years in the living....knowing everything you need to know.
Her channel is called Starry Hilder and I believe she is at the moment back in Idaho for a period of time.
She is my Christian mentor with bible teachings along the way.
Her life took a traumatic turn a few years back which saw her circumstances change having to leave her beloved homestead.
She is not only a nurse but is a travelling missionary.
It would be fantastic if you contacted her and let her stay a while on your land as a little respite.
Starry has travelled mighty distances and produced such beautiful videos in the process whilst teaching scriptures. She is fearless with such knowledge of Idaho and places to visit.
God Bless you and your Family.🙏🏴󠁧󠁢󠁳󠁣󠁴󠁿

Stringers wow - if you ask any professional they say that's the hardest part to get right but never having done them before and doing four sets and it working out is just phenomenal. Well done guys. Also who needs a gym when you've work outs like these - stairs and salt carrying.👍👏👏👏👏👏👏👍

That's no simple task you did building the stairs, of course you don't need to be told that lol. Y'all did a great job , heavy duty!

Notch in a 2x4 at the bottom so you can connect all the stringers together. Lay it down upside down and install a 2x6 in the middle then some strapping at the top. Raise it up into place and use the top straps to hold it up in place till you can install joist hangers. Because of the height of your total rise you will want to install a 4x4 under the middle support board. Please also consider installing no slip tread overlays on the treads. Those boards will get wet and could get slippery. If you install the light switch as a 2 way so you can turn on/off lights upstairs at the top or bottom it will be safer...

I discovered your channel a couple of weeks ago. I have been enjoying watching and must say you are my new favorite homestead couple. You are doing what I wished for my husband and I would have done after I retired from the Sheriff department 3 years ago. But, it wasn't meant to be. So, I have become a fan and will continue watching you and familly on your adventures. Enjoy, treasure the journeys and stay safe.

Stairs are one of the more complicated things to frame. I had to show my contractor how to do it as ours are a little more complicated.

Yeah. I have built only one set which was going to a loft area. And I had very limited space to put it in. I used the stair calculator, figured in a landing, and did a bunch of fudging, but, it turned out good and functional. However, this one set of unconventional stairs took me at least a WEEK!

Easy fix for your gap at the stair landing where it connects to the loft. Take of the plywood on the landing and cut a new piece to cover the landing and the gap between.

Gap in the plywood at top, don’t cut a strip to fill it cut a new top to long enough to overlap at the top to existing loft and use the additional plywood to help secure to the loft area by screwing together.

Hi there. Happy New Year !! I see the sheep's summer shelter sitting out there doing nothing. Why not carry it over and put it over the rabbit hutch ? Thing's are moving along very nicely. Stay safe and warm and healthy. God bless
