In today's video we are showing how to build a bushcraft shelter for our sheep. Our Babydoll sheep need a safe place to get out of the harsh North Idaho winter here on the homestead. We will get back to the tiny home build next!

Jeremy, here is my two cent's. Cut a few more logs in half and use for X brace's on the INSIDE of your walls, cover with the rest of your left over tin from the shop. Get some 1/2 " or bigger rebar 3 foot long, pound in the ground at a 45 angle at each corner. Get some chain, medium duty, slip over your rebar and bend the rebar over a little, then attach the chain to your corner posts with a lag bolt and washer. I think you would be golden then. Nothing but Chaps... sounds like a Chip & Dales kind of thing...HA HA..Keep up the good work you two.

I noticed the absence of diagonal x bracing too. Without it, any strong enough force to any side can cause the whole thing to collapse and pancake. The heavier the roof, the easier it’ll be to overcome those lag screws that are keeping it together right now. Even some leftover 1x4 can be used for corner bracing, don’t have to fully go corner to corner. If you have a some wire, rope or twine, it’ll work for X bracing and you can turnbuckle it for tension. As it is now, anyone can just push on a pole to cause it to lean past the strength of those lag bolts and it’ll come down, might hurt if you’re under it when it happens.

As long as the sheep are out of the wind and the wet they will be fine. Feed in the evening so digestion keeps them warm at night. Only fill water buckets half full so if they freeze you can add water to the top and get the ice block out.

Sheep shelter needs some "Z" bracing on sides and back. If not used, snow loads will collapse it. Nice shelter, using quick building ingenuity. Splitting a log with a chain saw takes a lot of concentration. This skill will come in very handy. Have a hardy Thanksgiving. Bless your family and all that you have done this year.

Itd be really cool if J put his skills to use for stair treads in the new house, eh? I love half rounds used for treads. Easy way to incorporate some logs into a modern design build. I too complimented his ripping the poles with a saw. It's not easy.

Agreed about Z bracing, some in the ceiling if you plan on moving the shelter could help with racking and twisting. Use the metal fragments for the sides and back. Put the bracing inside heavy on the screws. Love your family you give me hope for this world

It would kill two birds with one stone. It will keep the doggy safe and allow him to be closer to you where he wants to be not having to follow the tractor. Love the channel.

First thing anyone in farm tree cutting industry needs is logging chains and plenty of them, for the instance you are cutting trees its easiest to cut entire tree down in the woods and then pull entire tree uphill to a "landing site", when you get trees to landing site that is where you do all the cutting. This way your mess is confined to one spot rather than leaving the "mess" of branches in the wooded area, it allows you to keep a neat and somewhat cleaner woods and bonus is your more productive with your wood cutting because you can set up a work area tailored to just wood cutting (if you want to stack brush for buring that can be done too or chip up brush for woodchip use on trails as chips make perfect use for fire lanes).

I'll get me some zip tops, I like! Keigh here again in NC. Just wanted to mention how sweet of you, with all you have to do, to take time and effort to build shelter for animals - bless you! Also just wanted to tell you something I know you know, but it's my experience...sooner than you know, those boys are going to be dad's right and left hands! My boys are now 35 and 39. ANYTHING I need they both rescue me. God is so good to us! He blesses us many, many ways, but the best of all is our children. No way can you not unconditionally love them, and for the rest of your life they will still be your children, blessing you themselves, also in many ways, which started the moment they took their first breath! I was so elated when I saw Nevah's school books included the Bible! I promise you that is the absolute best and important thing you will ever be able to give your children...Jesus! I was raised by Christian parents. They always put God first, and only death separated them. My mom was such a prayer warrior, that all the years of my life, until she passed in 2017, I would ask for her prayers. Better than money, lawyers or friends. I do miss her! But I will be back with them soon. I've mentioned before that my health isn't so good, already typed too much, so won't go there. Just please know that I am so grateful you and Nevah are sharing your life with all us UA-camrs. Bless you, thank you.❤

now you have your tractor, a very usefull piece of kit is a branch logger, instead of burning all the brash from your felled trees, run it through the logger, depending on the size of the logger, it produces similar sized chunks of burnable timber, no sawing up, no splitting, just shovel it into the fire like coal, its a very good way to use whats normally dumped or burned with no thought as to its actual value

Here in Denmark we import a lot of timber from Canada and our prices have only increased by 10-20% over the last year.
And they say prices are going to increase even more, but it's mainly due to a building boom here. But it's a far cry from the 300 % increase you have in the US.

I like the sheep shelter except for one thing, you have got to anchor that thing somehow. I lived up near that area for awhile and a good windstorm and you won't have any sheep.

You really need to install cross braces so that it doesn't fall down in the wind.

  • @richardross7219
    @richardross7219 3 роки тому +3

Man, you worked hard cutting and carrying those trees. That structure needs diagonal bracing immediately or a wind will take it down. Hopefully the metal roofing is good enough to hold the building square but a diagonal bracing there would be a good idea. Redundancy saves lives and buildings. Are you thinking of using the corrugated metal for the sides? If you do, you will need to anchor the building down.
Safety tip: it will be tempting to use the forks with a big pallet for an elevated work platform. If you are going to do this, chain the pallet to the forks so that it can not tip nor slide. Drop the box scraper to the ground for better stability. I also brace the loader with a timber incase of hydraulic failure. Good Luck, Rick

Get some straw for bedding - they will eat it, but only in the absence of anything better. Sheep need a lot of ventilation because their urine is high in ammonia, which can give them breathing problems in closed spaces, so solid panel about 4 ft up the wall all round and put staggered vertical planks with an air gap to let some air blow through. Sheep generally have no problem at all with the cold, provided its dry - mine used to walk round the hilltops with a dusting of snow or frost on their backs because wool is such a good insulator. Cold and wet will kill them very quickly. Provided they have dry bedding in their shed, they'll be happy. Keep training them to come when you call them - they're not much more difficult to train than most dogs. I had to because my hill flock ruined two of my sheepdogs (at $2000 a time) by rounding on them and giving them a beating, but were happy to respond to my voice. Best of luck, may your flock increase twofold each year!

Oh my gosh, those are the cutest sheep I've ever seen. I was thinking about getting a dog, but... So do they stink? Could I keep one in my enclosed porch at night? Let it out during the day in the fenced yard.

diagonal bracing !!!! it needs diagonal bracing to keep it strong and from falling over. And it could have been 4 feet lower, your sheep are only 3 feet high.

You need a simple chainsaw jig, which you can get through Amazon for about $45.00 and be able too make your own lumber. It's really not that difficult, I've been doing it with trees that have been trimmed. Take care and God bless amen.

Great work on a sheep shelter, you could even make it even shorter, and then use the metal for the walls, and then lay some nice layers of bedding for warmth, or shorten the sides and use plywood scraps for the walls 😊👍💕💕💕
