Christmas carols are always much more spiritual when sung by an angel. The world misses you, Karen.

Christmas 2018, here I am enjoying the Carpenters, it won't be good if we don't play Karen's songs, what a beautiful and angelic voice. May her soul rest in peace.

For me Karens' was the best female voice of the 20th century! It can only be described as angelic. What a tragedy for the world in losing her at such a young age to the malady of anorexia. Who knows how many masterpieces she would have recorded and how much additional joy she would have gifted the world with had she but lived longer. RIP

This is one of the few versions I've heard of this song that sounds right! ! Most versions, the artists feel the need to change it and add their own twists to it. This is a beautiful song on it's own; it doesn't need any changes! The Carpenters here did a great job!

The Carpenters would indeed have been on their fourth Christmas album by now with equally beautiful TV specials to promote them. I also imagine they would have followed the Perry Como format, featuring how Christmas is celebrated around the world.

Agreed, I am really against the complete rehashing of an excellent, classic Christmas song melody, but what they did with it was absolutely sensational, the one exception. So good, that it could even top this truly excellent version. Merry Christmas!

That incredibly beautiful voice and those VERY LONG PHRASES. She has an endless tank of air. I don't think any of her other hit songs show her holding it out so long. AMAZING GIFTED PERFORMER..........ONE OF A KIND............R.I.P.

Incredible! The first "peace" sounds as if she were already out of breath. She keeps singing on and on, though. She must have used very little air while singing - reportedly she didn't sing loud and always was extremely close to the microphone.

I've seen numerous singers touching the mic with their lips while singing. NOT unusual. Still, they did not accomplish anything magical as Karen did.

Beautiful song. I personally think it should be classified as a 'hymn'. Karen's rich, profound voice makes it even more glorious. It is also timeless. It's lyrics speak loudly to the turbulent times in which we now live.

What incredible lyrics! And what an incredible voice to sing them.
I heard the bells on Christmas day
    Their old familiar carols play
And mild and sweet their songs repeat
Of peace on Earth, good will to men
And the bells are ringing (peace on Earth)
Like a choir they're singing (peace on Earth)
In my heart I hear them (peace on Earth)
Peace on Earth, good will to men
And in despair I bowed my head
"There is no peace on Earth," I said
For hate is strong and mocks the song
Of peace on Earth, good will to men
But the bells are ringing (peace on Earth)
Like a choir singing (peace on Earth)
Does anybody hear them? (Peace on Earth)
Peace on Earth, good will to men
Then rang the bells more loud and deep
God is not dead, nor doth He sleep
The wrong shall fail, the right prevail
With peace on Earth, good will to men
Then ringing, singing on its way
The world revolved from night to day
    A voice, a chime, a chant sublime
Of peace on Earth, good will to men
And the bells, they're ringing (peace on Earth)
Like a choir they're singing (peace on Earth)
And with our hearts, we'll hear them (peace on Earth)
Peace on Earth, good will to men
Do you hear the bells, they're ringing? (Peace on Earth)
The light, the angels singing (peace on Earth)
Open up your heart and hear them (peace on Earth)
Peace on Earth, good will to men
    Peace on Earth
    Peace on Earth
Peace on Earth, good will to men

This was one of my mother's favorite Christmas songs. She loved Christmas. She's been gone now for 23 years and I miss her greatly. So when I hear this song I think of her. It makes it kind of a bittersweet song but I love it, nevertheless. And I especially love the Carpenter's rendition (Karen had a beautiful voice) and this video has been a essential part of Christmas for me, now, for the last 5 years or so. I love it . So thank you.

A friend at Sinatra Family - Forum reminded us this day that a family favorite Christmas carol I HEARD THE BELLS ON CHRISTMAS DAY is from a poem by Henry Wadsworth Longfellow. Culminating with these words:
    And in despair I bowed my head;
    "There is no peace on earth," I said;
    "For hate is strong,
    And mocks the song
Of peace on earth, good-will to men!"
Then pealed the bells more loud and deep:
    "God is not dead, nor doth He sleep;
    The Wrong shall fail,
    The Right prevail,
With peace on earth, good-will to men."
    ----
My single “most favorite Christmas album” (for reasons I can never put into words) is the one from The Carpenters, which includes this - still my favorite version. Most viewed at UA-cam is this one -- so beautiful it transcends the VHS tape quality video: Karen and her brother performing on a long-ago TV special.
[Comments below video from kindred souls include these, most recent.]

Christmas 2018, here I am enjoying the Carpenters, it won't be good if we don't play Karen's songs, what a beautiful and angelic voice. May her soul rest in peace.

1 I heard the bells on Christmas day
    Their old familiar carols play,
And wild and sweet the words repeat
Of peace of earth, good will to men.
2 I thought how, as the day had come,
    The belfries of all Christendom
    Had rolled along th'unbroken song
Of peace on earth, good will to men.
3 And in despair I bowed my head:
"There is no peace on earth," I said,
"For hate is strong, and mocks the song
Of peace on earth, good will to men."
4 Then pealed the bells more loud and deep:
    "God is not dead, nor doth He sleep;
The wrong shall fail, the right prevail,
With peace on earth, good will to men."
5 Till, ringing, singing on its way,
The world revolved from night to day
    A voice, a chime, a chant sublime,
Of peace on earth, good will to men.

Sadly, the only part of the video I found lacking was the video of Karen and Richard, where it was quite obvious that this was a different song (the lip synching)... but the remainder of the video was quite powerful.
