    Another gripe Craig Jones has is the FloGrappling's hidden analytics on the viewership of the event thus reducing the negotiating power the athletes has.

    What i find fun and interesting about the qualifying rds of ADCC is the fact that anyone can show up.
    Any Judoka, any wrestler, any grappler from any dicipline.
    Imagine if a Mongolian wrestler who cross trains in sambo made it to ADCC.
    Would be cool.
    The promoters of ADCC should be more active in expressing the inclusion of grapplers from all disciplines.

      A Mongolian wrestler that makes it into ADCC will get their legs f'ed, just as what happened before in one championship.

      The problem with all grappling arts is that they all rely on the referee saving them from bad positions. And many times they look to place themselves in horrible situations just for the referee to stop the match. Judo for example guys go flat belly down on the mat so the referee saves them. In adcc the referee don't save you and if you place yourself in a horrible position you have to deal with it yourself. That means that only jiu-jitsu guys are qualified for such situations, as amazing as it may sound it is the only grappling art that thrive in such rule set. 😃🍍🔥🥋

      The original premise behind ADCC (1998) was that it was a similar model to the original UFC (1993) - get the best grapplers from different backgrounds, and figure out which is the best style of grappling.

    I know it's not necessarily the best for viewership but I enjoy the lack of rules in Jiu Jitsu.
    In terms of techniques that you can practice and add into your game is a lot more so. Instead of having one uniform ruleset everyone is crafting their game behind. You can develop a style and tweak it depending on the ruleset.
    Personally been enjoying diving into standing grappling and adding judo/wrestling into my game.

      I like that wrestling, sambo, judo or any grappling art can jump right on the mat without much worry about the rules, just get good positions and try to hit a submission.

    Much younger sport is debatable. Judo 1880s, Gracie Jujitsu 1920s. But there is certainly a centralization /decentralization dynamic going on (perhaps culturally inspired). Thanks for the overall insight, as always.

    Black belt world champions are not paying to compete at the majority of the IBJJF events, including Worlds. They get invited by the IBJJF, this even happens for lower-level black belt adult competitors at the regional events and even some Masters black belt competitors.

    Worst thing that can happen to any martial arts is getting caught up in the Olympics. The Olympics turn a fight into a PG specator sport and has ripped the soul out of Judo. BJJ is really what Judo should have created but it’s strict policies and rules prevent radical evolution of the martial arts. Now you see BJJ evolving faster as a martial art where those who want to keep flying the BJJ banner have been trying to standardise and institutionalise BJJ as a specific domain of competence, but most modern practitioners know that BJJ is not really what the martial art is evolving into, it’s more and more commonly referred to as just JiuJitsu and there’s also a more modern trend murmoring around just calling it grappling as practitioners of the martial art really want to add more technical skills from other domains like Judo, like wrestling because it all works and it’s all important.

      In the USA many bjj guys train 4-8 hours a day like obsessed fiends. That is not including the gym owners who get paid for even more mat time. They get very good, very fast. As a judoka trying to generate interest in a judo program at an mma gym I entered some of these bjj comps such as the Philly NAGA in black belt /expert categories. I got some great throws off that caused roaring applause from my team and a lot of butt scooting by my opponents. I ended up getting submitted with wrist/ankle locks that were hard to see so everyone was convinced that I dominated the competition and brought home gold. When I tried to tell my gym that I lost most matches by sneaky submissions no one believed me. 😂 Adding high amplitude throws to a paint drying competition has to count for something…

  • @mjkcneely
    @mjkcneely 15 днів тому +1

    Sensei Higashi, you are missing a key difference between the rise of bjj and the current prominence of judo that may be impossible to replicate. Judo gained significance after the rebuilding of Japan after ww2. The Olympics and governments around the world bought into the “gentle way” such that we essentially have a socialized system of professionally paid judo athletes in many places. This doesn’t exist in North America where martial arts are consumer/market based. You can’t replicate government contributions to the sport in non socialist countries. Modeling bjj and other grappling sports in the mold of IJF judo is a non starter.

    It's pretty hilarious how you're talking about how one day BJJ can grow into where judo is for athlete pay. Someone making 100k a year in corporate sponsorships and then a possibility of a 30k prize with a noncompete clause for their organization is far worse than BJJ.

    • @chrisgeorge7809
      @chrisgeorge7809 16 днів тому +3

      How is it worse? How many BJJ practioners make more than that? A dozen or so of the top athletes who have to constantly do social media influencing and instructional stuff? It's true in the US maybe only a half dozen people are taking a salary to train at the Olympic center but globally Judo has a much larger economic base to pay athletes.

    Has Craig Jones secured the money BEFORE the event?
    Has anyone seen contracts for the athletes guaranteeing them the winners prize money?
    Craig Jones has an appeal to a certain demographic and I’m sure people will agree with me that corporate USA/Europe/Asia/Middle east aren’t who he appeals to.
    His desire to give real money to competitors is admirable but is it US Dollars or Greek Drakma? 😂😂😂😂

    • @gnastxela
      @gnastxela 17 днів тому +11

      Yes to all of those questions. He pulled out a million dollars in cash on the JRE podcast just to prove he has it to pay. They posted a video showing a prominent BJJ competitor signing a contract so the contracts are there ensuring they will get paid. All of the prize money is in US cash.
      I disagree with you in that I think Craig Jones is extremely appealing to corporate world. He knows how to market himself and has put himself as a superstar in the BJJ world. His name alone on something will sell a product because he has so many loyal followers.

      @@ADAM_COLLECTS I don't think Craig's antics are any worse than a lot of guys in the UFC, and Dana doesn't have any issues bringing on sponsors. Gambling platforms, booze companies, crypto platforms(so basically more gambling platforms), sports apparel/gear companies, Onlyfans(who Craig already has a relationship with) are all options. Considering this is probably going to be the most watched BJJ event in the history of the sport, it should be relatively easy to get sponsors.

      Corruption? Dude flat out refused to compete because of the nationality of his opponent. That's textbook descrimination and not even his first offense. He did the same shit back in 2019. What organization wants a guy around who keeps messing up the brackets and holding the event hostage to make a political statement? If there's even a chance of him facing an Israeli, he quits. Would you wanna work with a coworker who packs up and goes home early whenever a potential client is from a country they don't like?

      @@CaPnBaLlBaG yes corruption because Russians get banned but not “israelis” and 10 years is a ridiculous sentence. It’s a political statement by IJF that we are shills for “israel” and will punish you for “discrimination.”
      If there is any discrimination here it’s bc of who the athlete is (an Arab Muslim). I GUARANTEE if the zio athlete did the same thing he would not get the 1/10th the sentence.
