  • 1979 - The last year of the 70’s provide no shortage of big events.
On February 1, the Ayatollah Khomeini (This guy just looked mean) returns to Tehran, Iran after nearly 15 years of exile. 11 days later Khomeini seizes power in Iran, overthrowing the US backed Shah. On November 4, 3,000 Iranian radicals invade the U.S. Embassy in Tehran and take 90 hostages (53 Americans). They demand the United States send the Shah of Iran back to stand trial. We have had problems with Iran ever since.
History is made in England as Lady Margaret Thatcher becomes the first female elected prime minister on May 4.
Probably the most famous actor ever, John Wayne dies on June 11th at the age of 72.
The Soviet Union invades Afghanistan which begins nearly a decade long war only to see the Russians withdraw in defeat.
On Three Mile Island, PA a Nuclear Accident occurs after a reactor catches fire. The accident happened 12 days after the release of the movie The China Syndrome which is about a major nuclear plant crisis. Pretty weird coincidence.
American Airlines Flight 191: In Chicago, a DC-10 crashes during takeoff at O'Hare International Airport, killing all 271 on board and 2 people on the ground in the deadliest aviation accident in U. S. history.
China institutes the one child per family rule to help control its exploding population. It is believed that this policy has prevented about 400 million births.

In television, CSPAN is launched. Debuting in 1979 were Scooby Doo and Scrappy Doo, Benson, Nightline, Archie Bunker’s Place, Knots Landing, The Dukes of Hazzard, Buck Rogers in the 25th Century, The Misadventures of Sheriff Lobo and the groundbreaking PBS show Lap Quilting with Georgia Bonesteel (just checking to see if you are still reading this).

Popular Songs of 1979 include Heart of Glass by Blondie, Hot Stuff by Donna Summer, Born to Be Alive by Patrick Hernandez, Don’t Stop Until You Get Enough by Michael Jackson, Escape (The Pina Colada Song) by Rupert Holmes and Video Killed the Radio Star by the Buggles.
In the NFL, the Dallas Cowboys watch their hopes of winning a 3rd Super Bowl slip through the hands of tight end Jackie Smith as the Steelers win their 3rd Super Bowl 35 to 21. The 1979 MVP was Earl Campbell who rushed for 1697 yards and 19 touchdowns. These were huge numbers at the time. The Defensive Player of the Year was the late great Lee Roy Selmon, Defensive End for Tampa Bay.
In the NBA, the Lakers draft Magic Johnson which sets up the great rivalry of the 80s between the Celtics led by Larry Bird and Magic’s Lakers. Also in 1979, Magic’s Michigan State Spartan’s knocked off Larry Bird’s Indiana State Sycamores team 75 to 64.
In hockey, The Great One, Wayne Gretzky makes his NHL debut finishing the year with 51 goals and 137 total points. The effort was good enough to win him his first of 8 straight Hart Trophy as the league’s MVP.
In baseball, The Pittsburgh Pirates rode their “We are Family” theme and the bats of NL Co-MVP Willie “Pops” Stargell and Dave Parker to the World Series. The Pirates overcame a 3 to 1 deficit to beat the Baltimore Orioles in 7. The last two wins were in Baltimore. Stargell hit .400 in the fall classic, racking up 3 home runs and 7 RBI.
Tragedy strikes the Yankees as catcher Thurman Munson is killed in a plane crash on August 2. He was just 32 years old.

Now this is a very nice set. way way better than 1986. better than some of the Football cards 86 and later. a very nice set
I have alot of these players. not everyone but a lot..
players I have The Joe Morgan , I don't have Steve Carlton, I do have Winfield , I do have Eckersley , I do have Robin Yount , Tom Seaver, Nolan Ryan,
I have Ozzie Smith, I have Johnny Bench , Munson, I have Dawson, and Perez, , I have Rose, Brock, Hunter , Fisk, Mr. October
    i'm not sure if I have Sutton , Murphy, Garvey , Stargell , Mccovey , I don't have Carew, I don't have Brett, I don't have Palmer , I don't have Carter,
    Murray no Schmidt,
yes the old uniforms/helmet is classic, Me and my parents were comming back from Boston from Cape cod my dad's sister had a 2nd home out there
so she would let us use it for the week. heard it on the radio. Munson 's sad News. yes the old Twins helmet is very classic,
I also love those classic pullover Jerseys of the Red Sox and the Red and Black helmets/hats
it is a classic set it's not my favorite set of the decade it's also not last place
    10.1970
    9. 1971
    8. 1976
    7. 1974.
    6. 1977
    5. 1979
    4. 1978
    3. 1972
    2. 1975
    1 1973 .
so now some questions did you get any of these cards as a kid in wax packs/rack or did you get these cards at a show later on in life or both
which cards as a kid and which later on in life?
the Burger king card were you living in Philly at that time or did you get it at show later on in life or ebay in recent times?
I noticed you missed some players
    1. Graig Nettles
    2. Ron Guidry
    3. Alan Trammell
he's worth a lot more than Tony Perez
Trammell is worth about 3.00 and Perez is about 1.50
    4. Bump Willis
what's the difference between a semi star and a common? I always thought the semi stars were the lower value like a 3.00 dollar card
for this set like Hunter, Whitaker, Willis, and the bigger stars were the more expensive like Bench, Yaz, Fisk, Ryan, Mr . October
commons were the skipped numbers example Nettles, Caldwell, Cooper, Dwight Evens, Singleton ect what's the difference between the small stars/semi and commons?
you and I have alot in common we both like hockey, we like older stadiums, older Red Sox uniforms older cards.
My cards I have in a shoebox with rubberbands the original way of storing cards. My Red Sox are in my championship drawer with my Yankee cards
    Canadiens, Raiders.
some of your cards are a 8 and some are a 7
My Ryan is a 6 I also have it graded , Your Munson is a n 8 mine has creases and corner I would guess a 3 to a 5
grading my other cards I would say the Ozzie is a 6 or a 7 Dave Winfield I will guess a 6 or so Fisk and the Yaz an 7 to an 8 Bench about the same
Yount a 6 or so Dawson and Perez about the same Hunter is about a 6 Mr. October about the same.

If you were a baseball fan at the time, the day Munson died in burned in your memory.
We definitely have those things in common.
That is great you have so many of the cards from that set. It is a good one. I have a hard time ranking my favorites sets because I like them all. If I had to choose my favorite from the decade it would be either 75, 76 or 79.
I bought all of the 1979 graded cards in the video when I returned to collecting in 2000. This group was likely finished about 15 years ago. I can't remember exactly when. The only exception is the Burger King Rose. I picked that up a couple of years ago. I never had it as a kid.
I do have a 1979 Topps Set that is raw. It is not from my childhood, but I wanted to own one because it brings back memories of my childhood. That is where Trammell, Guidry, Nettles and the others reside. You're right that Trammell is worth more than Perez, but I bought these long before Trammell was in the Hall of Fame. I do have other non hall of famers like Munson, Garvey and Murphy, but they are more special to me than the others. I only do 30 cards because that is how I display them so some cards didn't make the cut. Personal preference.

@@tjmacvintagecardsnostalgia648 Of the cards above that I own are from my childhood except these
Johnny Bench got one from Back to the cardboard after I noticed I lost mine.
Yaz recently like picked one up 2 months ago , Fisk same picked up from the card store
so the Morgan, Ryan, Seaver , Winfield, Munson , Mr. October, Dawson, Perez, Hunter, Yount , Eckersley , Smith , Rose , Brock
are all from my child hood.

Excellent showcase Terry, I love that Steve Garvey card, secondly that Rod Carew card looks awesome too. It’s a very good looking set. I did really appreciate the card of the Hawk from this set. I remember stating in one of my Top Duos video, that he looked so pensive...🤔...probably wondering what to have for dinner 😂🤣 I simply love cards that can tell a story

Thanks James. I agree on both the Garvey and Carew. That is a funny perspective on the Dawson card. I went back and looked at it to see where you are coming from. Haha. Definitely agree with the cards telling the story. Take a look at the Carlton Fisk card again. I was messaging with Picker Jim yesterday about the Carlton Fisk card. That card shows the great Red Sox and Yankees uniforms of the day. I think the Yankees in the background are Bob Lemon, Dick Howser and Yogi Berra. I love the Yankees Jackets from that era. I always wanted one.

Thanks Jim. Cool that was your first year too. Like I wrote to Ray from Philly, it was a great time to start collecting. I know you are Red Sox fan and I am not, but I always liked their uniforms from that era. What do you think of the 79 Fisk card? I think it captures that 70s uniform perfectly. I also love that it has the Yankees in the background in their Navy Blue Jackets with the giant New York emblem. Those are my first memories of baseball. I tell my oldest son I want one of those old Yankees jackets. Haha. Have a good weekend my friend.

I think Fisk has quite a few nice cards in his career. The 1979 is my second or third favorite of his. I love his 77 Topps card with Willie Randolph slicing into home plate, that’s my favorite card of his. After that it’s a toss up between his 1974 and 1979 cards. I do like that the 1979 card shows him batting and it is fitting that it is against the Yankees! I always wondered, do you think that is Billy Martin sitting in the Yankees dugout?

    • @tjmacvintagecardsnostalgia648
      @tjmacvintagecardsnostalgia648  3 роки тому

@@PickerJimS I agree with you. Especially, his 70s cards. His 1977 is my favorite because it captures that Yankees Red Sox rivalry. You and I are on the same page. My next two are 74 and 79. It is a toss up for me too. Great question about who is in the picture. I don't think it is Martin, but of course it could be since the back ground is a little blurry. If I had to guess, the one sitting with the jacket is Dick Howser, the other is Yogi Berra and the man standing with the glasses is Bob Lemon. I could be wrong, but they were all on the staff in 78.

This Era, Are the cards you have approved as 7 ,s are they still a good grade. I’m not sure, I know 9,s and 10,s are nice. Your opinion, because you have some nice cards and I would think the Grading would be better. Sorry, I just collect, never sold a card. Traded a few. Just wondering ????

    • @tjmacvintagecardsnostalgia648
      @tjmacvintagecardsnostalgia648  3 роки тому +1

No need to apologize. Cards graded PSA 7 or 8 from the late 70s are considered higher grade cards. PSA 9s and 10s of stars and HOF players from that era are investor level cards where each individual card would go for several hundred to thousands of dollars. For example, a PSA 7 1979 Brett is a near mint card. Back in the old days before grading it would probably be called mint. A PSA 7 would retail for about $20 or so. A PSA 8 which is what I have is about $40. A PSA 9 would be about $400 or so dollars and a 10 would be well over a thousand dollars. I generally collect PSA 5s and 6s from the 50s, 6s and 7s from the 1960s, 6, 7 and 8s from the 70s and 8s and 9s from the 80s. I don't consider myself an investor, but rather I am collector who is curating a collection of stars, HOFers and players that I connect with. I hope to have legacy type collection that I can pass on to my children to either keep without taking up too much room or to sell if they choose. I am not an accumulator type collector. Not that there is anything wrong with that. A healthy hobby benefits from all types of collectors.
