I always think of the Sabre class, Steamrunner class, and Norway class as small tactical ships with protective angled hulls, attempts to protect the nacelles and modularly designed to be fast.to build. So I sort of see them a bit like 'intelligent and capable cannon fodder'. Not exactly hero ships, although the Sabre is arguably the best of them ton for ton and its role as a scout and escort. More developed, Sleeker, and maybe more nimble than the overpowered, overgunned, bug-prone, early Defiant. Starfleet doesn't really do battleships, but the Excelsior was definitely the advanced super-heavy cruiser of its day, with incredible technologies, (and bugs to with that tech). Certainly a testbed for new technologies. It's possibly the 'iconic heavy cruiser' of Starfleet as one You-Tuber has called it. After over 80 years, of course, it's questionable if it can still be called a heavy cruiser at all, certainly this was looking like the old version with older torpedoes. The outcome makes sense. Refit versions of the Excelsior can still make a good accounting of themselves.
I’ve always loved the Sabre Class but I think Pulse Phaser Cannons would be better than the ships linear phaser strips. Plus the ship about the same size as the Defiant. In my opinion. That was a awesome battle. Thanks
I see the Saber as a kind of “budget Defiant”, an effort to build something like the Defiant, but without all of the super advanced tech, no pulse cannons or quantum launchers, expanded out a little to give everyone a little more room and to improve the warp field by moving the nacelles away from the hull. Still a dangerous ship, but an ultra conservative take on the Defiant concept
Fun matchup: a 40 crew, 310k tonnage modern swarm destroyer vs a 700 crew, 2.1m tonnage venerable cruiser. You can definitely see Starfleet's production evolution: A Sabre has the advantage in that Utopia Planetia can crank out about 7 Sabres with roughly the same materials needed for just one Excelsior.
The sabre was made with standard but up to date tech. It had no advanced untested systems apart from those sabres with a secind warp core for its forward twin phasers
I think that Starfleet’s only pure warship design was the Defiant, after that project was abandoned, they simply incorporated many of its technologies into the next generation of multipurpose starships intended to replace the ageing New Orleans, Challenger, Nebula designs etc. The Saber seems to be the ship intended to replace all the old Miranda’s that are conducting patrols and escort missions with outdated technology
I'd check the Saber at startup, because it looks like you start out not having a starboard phaser array. Or maybe it's just not showing up on the display screen.
"Excelsior" new content. New light cruiser vs. really old heavy cruiser. Saber was obviously tough for the Excelsior-class to pound the dorsal shield, but Saber did take significant damage there. It may be half the length if the Excelsior-class, but manages to compact an internal volume on par with the Intrepid.
@@SiXiam i always thought it was the other way around. the Orberth class was the first mainstream scout ship followed by the Miranda which was more a cruiser. The Sabres, Novas and Steamrunners were their replacements.
@@darioworrell3968 I only really know that the Nova is a science vessel because that's what they said on Voyager. I've read that it was the Oberth replacement. Not sure about the others.
The Saber is ridiculously under powered and lightly armed. It should at least be as powerful as a defiant class with some pulse cannons and higher rate of fire torpedoes!!
Excelsior is my favorite ship. Super long serving, stout, seems to be pretty easily upgraded, plus you get to say "EXCELSIOR!!" when talking about them. If you operate under the assumption that every flagship is peek performance during its time. And every flagship will eventually become obsolete as stronger designs come out. It's pretty easy to make the argument that the Excelsior is the best
Yes! It makes you wonder if the old larger ships needed loads of scientists and engineers? Whereas the newer battle focused ships just needed tactical officers mainly.
Is this the original Excelsior or the Lakota upgrade? Those phasers on the Excelsior look new and it's shields were holding up way too well against the Saber's weapons. The OG Excelsior should be outclassed given the 80 year difference in tech.
Doesn't necessarily have to be Lakota level but the Excelsiors were still in use during 1st Contact when the Sabre was originally created around and they all had relatively modern refits. The Lakota was a special case and even had Quantums. But yes if this was canonically the original Sulu excelsior, it should have lost very quickly.
Does the saber not have pulse cannons??? I'd of thought it would of....I thought that was a staple of the Borg busters, as the pulse phaser cannons were specifically devised to fight the Borg, as it was harder to adapt to them
"Sulu's trying to ram me!" "Ohhhhh myyyyyy"
I think the Excelsior class ships were classed as a Heavy Cruiser
They were but as they've aged the 'heavy' has been dropped.

This was fun! How about seeing the Lakota variant of the Excelsior against several Sabres?

Pulse phasers are short range. Sabre is bigger than the defiant.
Its about time we had a 6 second video on the Oberth class.
The Wrath Of Sulu ... Badger, you spilt his cup of tea!
Awesome battle!
I suggest finding out next time how many Runabouts it takes to defeat DS9
Well done Captain against Captain Sulu ... I bet he said '' My... God...!!! ', right before the last hit..... I like the ship , neat design...

I used to love this game i loved the kessok battle ship and the shrike and the super huge carddasian ship
Great video! Could you make a Defiant class (without cloaking device) vs Sabre class video?
This was a fun one. Thank you.
I’d love to see the Sabre vs nova class.

2:14 Sulu is so self assured that he hasn't put down his tea yet. 🫖
The Excelsior class back in the 23rd century are Battle cruisers. Connie are heavy cruisers
Richard great Videos Sir. It was awesome. Can you still buy the game for computer?
Thanks. It's available at gog.com still.
Love it Retro. To classic designs with great fire power.

Can u do saner vs dominion bug ship 1 on 1 then 3 on 1 ( 3 bugs vs one saner)

The sabre class was apart of the anti borg initiative. built as a replacement for the aging oberth class.
Thanks for the info :-)
The Nova class I thought was the replacement for the Oberth. Sabre to me is more Miranda replacement.

I imagine that the Sabre wouldn’t be the Enterprise B or the Lacota and it’s refit.
Is the the USS Vancouver in the game?
If so can you put it against something?
No. Although if i find a mod I'll give it a go. Wasn't that class in Lower Decks?
I'd like to see the Sabre class go against a Nebula class. I think the battle field would be equal.
What’s the name of this game and how much does it cost and where did you get it from
Star Trek Bridge Commander. It's at gog games.
we know that starfleet is good at on thing.. packing lots of new tech and weapons/etc in smaller frames as time goes on.
Yes! It makes you wonder if the old larger ships needed loads of scientists and engineers? Whereas the newer battle focused ships just needed tactical officers mainly.
Lets go Excelsior.
How do you get the game
gog.com sell it still.

This looks like KOBMARU, which means this is just Excelsior. In that mod, the Lakota is called Lakota.

Fight more Romulans Retro.
