Using a Film Camera in 2024 (Canon AE-1)

- In today's video, I talk about my experience using a 35mm film camera in 2024 - the legendary Canon AE-1! The populary of shooting on film seems to be bigger than ever and it seems like photographers who grew up learning on DSLR's and mirrorless are all taking the plunge and seeing what all the fuss is about with analog photography. While I've had some experience shooting on film in the past, I've been trying to get into it more seriously over the past few months, and while it's been quite challenging, I absolutely understand the love for it! The vintage aesthetics, colors and grain are so hard to replicate, and the feeling of getting photos developed and scanned are so rewarding. If you've ever thought about trying it out, I highly recommend you do!

Anyone else shoot film? Let us know 👇
My parents had a eos 1n canon and I used to play with it as a kid. I'm sure they still have it somewhere!
This camera is a legend! great review and awesome vintage shots my friend.
Thank you :))
I remember my mum using an old canon point and shoot film camera and going to the shopping mall to get photos developed and printed. Such good memories!
Same here! Those were the good days!
I could not agree more! Shooting analog is so addictive. I am always overwhelmed by the all the new cameras being released seemingly every week and coming home with 2000 pics to sift through. I love the simplicity of analog!
Great video!
Thank you! Defo agree - it's addictive!
I've always been fascinated by film cameras, I love the look of film photos. A great watch Aaron!
Thank you :)
Its a really nice camera and it adds that old vibe to the photos, makes the photos so much better! Thank you very much for sharing this video with us! You made some lovely shots in there! ❤
Thank you very much! :)
I'm old enough to remember using film cameras as a kid. We had a canon sureshot and it did all the focusing and exposing for you so it was so easy to use. Sad to say I think m parents threw it away though. Great to see people like you getting into film though and keeping the traditions alive. Your photos look great with it!
I'm pretty sure my parents had a point and shoot canon back in the day as well! Thank you :)
This remind me of my childhood when camera like this was like a luxury! Greetings from Vietnam♥
The look on those images tho! 😍
Kudos once again for such a good range of photo samples. Always appreciate how you always show real world examples in your videos and it's not just 10 mins of talking head shots with one or two photos ofa flower lol
Thanks again!
Love the black and white photos! 🍉🍉
🍉🍉🍉❤️❤️❤️
Many moons ago my parents had a Leica film camera from mid 80s before they sold it on. I always regretted not being able to shoot with it. Film photography is definitely very fun and rewarding.
That's so cool but sad to hear they sold it!
Cool topic Aaron, you know I like all things vintage. That camera is a work of art and love the grainy film shots.
Totally agree!
More film content please! Would love to see a buying guide - I watched your kodak ektar review and I would love to get into shooting film!
That's so cool to hear. We definitely have some film related content coming so watch this space :)
I am still using olympus om10. I love film because it's fun and slows me down. Waiting to see the pics is like waiting for a cake to bake!
Great analogy! Definitely feels like baking and waiting to see what comes out of the oven!
It takes real patience and skill to shoot on film!
And money :(
I can't manual focus to save my life as my eyesight isn't very good but I love the retro look of film images!
Don't worry about it, I still struggle with manual focus on these older cameras!
Those shots are really cool not gonna lie.
Thanks!!
The ae1 is a classic! You should also check out the a1!
We plan to buy more film cameras in the future so watch this space :)
I never try this kind of camera before, maybe it's too hard for me because I likke to shoot sports, I think focusing will be too difficult, but I really like the results. Greetings from Jakarta bro!
Thank you! Don't think I'd be able to manually focus with sports either but there are auto focusing film cameras out there!
Nice photo samples!!
Thank you!
I'm guilty of shooting digital and then throwing a film lut with lots of grain over it...but at least I know I can take 100 shots if I screw something up and it will definitely be in focus :D
Haha good point, but that's the fun of shooting on film!
good review
Thanks!
I tried to shoot on film a couple years ago with a canon point and shoot and half my images came back blurry or had weird light streaks all over the images :(
The film might have been exposed to light somehow or gotten damaged, unfortunately it can happen if the seals in the camera are a bit damaged. I'd have it checked out by a professional before using the camera again.
I have a cheap Kodak Ektar H35 that my bf gifted me. It's so simple and you can't control anything, you just point and shoot but you get really cool vintage style photos, have you heard of it?
I have the same one! I was a bit disappointed with the pic quality though, it only seems to take good photos when its a sunny weather.
We've actually just bought one for a trip just for fun, but will definitely make a video about it!
I love the look of film photography but I'm too lazy and impatient for it. Film and having it developed is not cheap where I am from as well :(
It's not cheap here either tbh!
Can you/do you edit your film photos?
I tend not to apart from fixing or adjusting exposure but when you get them scanned you can ask for tiff files instead of jpeg, which offer more flexibility for editing.
Btw I spot an skx007 and hamilton auto - are you a watch geek??
Good eye! I am indeed! It's an sxk013 though - I have small wrists!!
I've found the film photography community to be quite gatekeepery
I'm sorry to hear that, there are plenty of very welcoming groups on FB and reddit from our experience.
I love your protest photos. Free Palestine 🍉🍉🍉
Thank you! 🍉
