  • "Out of Season" by Ernest Hemingway is a short story about an American couple, the husband, Peduzzi, who takes on the role of a fishing guide in an Italian town. Despite it being the off-season for fishing, Peduzzi convinces the husband to go fishing, leading to a series of misadventures involving the procurement of fishing permits and alcohol. The dynamic between the couple is strained, with the young wife being disinterested and detached, highlighting underlying tensions in their relationship. As the story unfolds, the husband's inexperience with fishing and his reliance on Peduzzi's guidance become apparent, all against the backdrop of a quiet, off-season resort town. The narrative is steeped in themes of isolation, disillusionment, and the search for meaning, emblematic of Hemingway's sparse writing style and exploration of human nature.

Hemingway was the great storyteller. Haven’t read anything as good since reading all his available novels.

Beyond a masterful description of human interaction and foibles, probably not.
