- "The Gambler, the Nun, and the Radio" by Ernest Hemingway is set in a hospital where three main characters, Cayetano Ruiz, Sister Cecilia, and Mr. Frazer, interact in a recovery room. Cayetano, a professional gambler recovering from an injury, engages in card games and reflects on his life and misfortunes. Sister Cecilia, caring for him, provides a contrast with her serene, devoted presence and her interest in the stories of the saints. Mr. Frazer, another patient, uses a radio to escape his reality, showcasing the different ways each character copes with pain and confinement. The story explores themes of fate, despair, and the search for meaning through the varied perspectives of its characters, set against the backdrop of the Spanish Civil War.
