Very well narrated. However, I have discovered, after intensive independent research, that Dickens must have hurriedly slapped this story together in imitation of two other stories. One was already published in the April, 1836 edition of "Blackwood's Edinburgh Magazine," being called the "Unbidden Guest." Dickens would have almost certainly read it. The other was as-yet unpublished, being called "The New Year's Bells." The first had been written by a young American author named Mathew Franklin Whittier, brother of poet John Greenleaf Whittier. The second, I believe, had been co-authored by Mathew and his future wife, Abby, in the early 1830's. Dickens must have somehow obtained the manuscript from a publication to which Mathew had submitted it overseas. If you look for parallels between these two stories and "Goblins," you will see that they are unmistakable--and that Dickens' story is a very poor knock-off.
