    It seems this winter has been worse than normal for amg because of all the rain. I had a pure ryegrass lawn and it thinned out over winter and let the amg take over. I'm overseeding with strong red fescue so hopefully it thickens up and competes better with amg. Would be great to see some red fescue in your test plot. Great video as always robbie 👍

    Your video has come at the right time for me
    AMG has gone wild in my lawn this year and I’ve been on my hands and knees with a fork pulling it out. I swear as I pull one bit out another two appear
    Good info about the weed👍

    Thank you this was a great video. Have been watching another man channel where the guy claimed to have dug it all up in a large lawn, but seems in vain for the reasons given. I also won’t bother killing off my own lawn and starting again having watched this as if the seeds last 5 years it will just come back.
    Seeing the problem you have in your own lawn will help me manage my own expectations.
    Out of interest is the mulch option on the lawn mower a bad option as it will spread this ?

    We really need the proper products to manage this🙄.. I did some testing with “pelargonzuur” that’s How we call it in belgium. It seems to kill of the amg, and not kill the ryegrass completely. I’m going to do further testing with light mist of product 👍🏻. The biggest lawn area was overtaken by amg. 😩

    In my humble opinion, the best option, the one that resolved the problem in my lawn, is to say goodbye to ryegrass and use a good quality bent grass. Perfect for stripping and pretty much looks after itself.

      @@Premier_lawns_official is that the only downside of bent grass?

    • @Premier_lawns_official
      @Premier_lawns_official  23 дні тому +3

      @@a_m8330 I like it because of the colour, bent needs pruning (verti cutting), its not as hard wearing and doesn't stipe up as well or provide that dark green colour
      There is a trend at the moment for bent grass lawns and lots of folks are jumping on it
      Last couple of years there was a trend for 100 rye lawns, then people found they were shit in the winter. Especially this one as it was so wet
      It depends on what you want.
      The biggest lie going is that bent grass lawns will stop AMG, if that's true walk onto any golf course and look at their greens.
      Most greens are mostly AMG, and they have the tools and resources....
      I was a green keeper for 20 years and worked at 6 different courses and in that time from small local clubs to the best club in the area they all had one thing in common and that was the greens were full of AMG

    I find that the key to beating POA is bent & fescue mix. Why? Simply because, POA needs light to germinate and if you have thin grass sward it will colonize that. The other reason for POA spreading is rye grass. Rye thins out over winter and has upright growth habit and the plants are thin compared to fescue. This makes it easy for POA to establish. Fescue and bent due their growth nature can outcompete POA over long time. Fescue grows very thick and as you said has deep roots. Bent grass on the other hand sends long stolons in different directions and if you cut the stolon by verticutting then you create simply two new clones, same way like strawberries multiply by runners.
    My lawn is in shade most of the time and I had problems with POA until I found all this out. POA is a opportunistic colonizing grass type. However when your lawn is thick and can quickly cover bare patches itself POA has much more difficult job. I don't cut my lawn too short, I don't have any weeds, apart from occasional dandelion trying to grow every year, it's just grass. I didn't use any weedkillers in last 6-7 years, even for spot treatment. I also increased the height of the mowing blade and now POA has really difficult time to spread in thick grass. I am sure it seeded but lack of light doesn't allow it to germinate, the lawn is to tall and to thick for it. It only reappeared when I leveled my lawn, after it was scalped prior to overseeding. I will beat it again.

      As a past green keeper I can tell you that bent and fescue 100 percent don't keep AMG out.
      At the moment a lot of people are following a trend in a couple of years will probably be very disappointed
      But hey yo.

    • @CMDRSloma
      @CMDRSloma 24 дні тому +1

      @@Premier_lawns_officialI didn't even knew it is a trend until now, I've been doing this for the past 9 years on my lawn. I had rye in the very beginning, seeded by previous owner of the house but it thinned out, rye can't handle shade, all kinds of weeds colonized bare soil including moss. It germinates quickly and looks fine in the summer but in winter it's POA, Yorkshire FOG party in the rye grass.
      Since I moved to bent fescue I don't have to constantly overseed, lawn is thick. I just don't cut it very low, it's second to higest setting on my rotary mower, 4-5cm approx. When I was cutting it lower the grass was thinner and allowed enough light for more POA to germinate in small gaps.
      Also, I have to mention that reducing watering in my lawn wouldn't work, too much rain, I don't water my lawn at all.

    • @nikon255

      @@CMDRSloma bent and fescue at 4-5cm sounds like fungus and thatch :D

    • @CMDRSloma
      @CMDRSloma 21 день тому

      Not in the shade, it grows slower. Fescue has upright habit, and grows dense and this is why it crowds out poa.
      When it comes to thatch, this only a problem if it is not being decomposed fast enough. I don't use synthetic fertilizers, instead I opt for organic because it doesn't affect soil life. And if soil life thrives it decomposes dead matter in no time.
