G'day your knowledge of the game unparalleled but as I have just bought the game the first road you place and immediately delete could you please explain that is done because I tried to do this several times without success. In fact my roads seem to go on for miles and I don't know how stop except to quit the game and start again
Hey, just wanted to say thanks for the vid and give some feedback if you do another - for beginner's, be careful when switching between something super basic and something that requires experience (example, you give a good beginner tip to zoom out to look at where everything is to 'plan for the future' and a beginner would not know how to do that last part - not a big deal but it's something that contradicts/defeats the purpose of the tip since a beginner like myself really has no idea what to look for when zooming out etc.
Mapuia Pachuau when i started the game, i literally just design my own roads then highlight ALL of the zones, eventually there was too many traffic congestions hahahaha
thats been my life for like a month.. but ive got the hang of it now.. i have one really good city based on a strict grid network.. another semi successful one just randomly going.. but i love this guys videos.. so many neat tricks and shit.
Laurens Peschko unlike conflictnerd he does a battery method every time ;) This guy does something new and makes me want to restart a city and try again =)
Jesus Christ teach me your ways of traffic control. I have 20k and my traffic is screaming for air. I mean, its actually in one road only. Though, Im not tripping if it isnt affecting my emergencies services
Use pedestrian paths, place roundabouts, place industry near (safe distance) from the residential zones so people can walk to work. Carefull with big industrial areas, place cargo train station there, and exits to high-ways.
It's unusually fun to watch you play because you are so slow and methodical about your construction, and yet you're casual too. Plus your presentation voice is chill and soothing. It's a good youtube video voice. A lot youtubers are either monotone weirdos, or wanna game show hosts. Makes me wish i wasn't at work so i could start a new city and model after your non-grid system..
Man this is just perfect : a friend of mine just purchased the game, he instantly loved your videos, but still wanted more details about starting a city. You read his mind ! I'm linking this to him right now !
What I find very useful is starting of with dirt roads, they're insanely cheap and insanely good for layouts, when you have a 2 unit gab between roads the dirt road fits exactly in the middle of the 2 roads, so if you lay a road that sticks out about 5-6 units and then add a small section of wider road at the end and then delete the dirt you get the exact middle (: Also, 3x3 with a dirt road gives you a 45% angle pretty neat :D
ImperialJedi, I can't tell you how many times I have watched these videos of yours. I just got this game a few weeks ago, never knew it existed. I'm on a Mac so gaming is not our strong suit, but my computer actually didn't implode trying to run this---at least not yet. But I have been watching you for help almost 24/7 since I started playing, lol. I have you playing while I play, I pause the videos and recreate a lot of your roads. Just want to say your videos are MUCH appreciated. Great commentary and tips. Thank you.
I have been searching for a new way to start a city. This just made me start using the four lane streets early which will help sooooo much. I always get to a point where I feel stagnant and I think this will help me grow. Sadly I’m on Xbox so I can’t use the workshop upload, but thanks for explaining it all out well. I was able to build along with you!
Great little vid. I'm impressed with how much the game has evolved in terms of road guides, intersection controls, etc since your original starter city guides. I'm inspired to come back and play some more!
Another great video, very helpful and easy to understand. You take things slow and inform us on the things we need when starting out. Looking forward to another amazing series by you imperialjedi.
Man, where have you been all this time. I've been struggling almost every single time I start out on road layouts. Saw too many similar videos and none of them have helped as much as this video. Thanks a lot man.
Hell yeah a new starter town :D Followed all your other videos, looking forward for another one. Basically you got me to installing the game again and start creating. keep it coming bro, awesome work ! Thanks
The original "how to" was the whole reason I felt confident enough to even start playing this game. Now my current city is reaching 160,000 and so much fun to play. Thanks for all you do Will.
6:00 good hint to force the houses to zone smaller without having the roads quite so close together is to build the roads at a normal 8 square distance (or 9 square distance) and then run a pedestrian path lengthwise through the middle, and then a few short ones crossing that. Helps to increase pedestrian counts (i.e. fewer cars on the road, and more people using public transport) and helps to keep the intersections a little further apart to help what traffic does exist move more smoothly. The paths can also link with the paths already built into the parks that you lay in. (although most of the default parks are going to be far to big. so feel to change some roads into culdesacs to allow the larger parks to fit. (it also gives a realistic way to break up the boring grid patterns, without making it completely spaghetti.) :)
I looked for tutorials to help me improve traffic flow, but now I just forgot about that while enjoying the video like a Bob Ross episode. You're a good speaker!
A little tip when splitting a large road into two with regards to good lane use, place your large road eight units back and your smaller roads four units apart, then use free form mode and link to end of smaller roads curving them one at a time into the large road. Swap the direction of the one way which would be wrong. Doing this changes the arrows from left (or right) turn into straight arrows which makes the vehicles continue to use both lanes, when it's a turn arrow they will swap to the inside lane and cause traffic to sometimes back up. Another great vid by the way, :) and I do intend to watch you stream live one day since I've watch you from your very beginnings in your other life ;)
Nice vid, man! I just bought this game a couple nights ago. Was an avid simcity 2013 player back then, so I’ve been hyped to get back into a city builder again. Solid examples and tips!
ImperialJedi so the other city is going to be on the back burner I assume? I'm actually kinda excited to build with you and try to learn more I've been struggling with managing traffic and goods.
ImperialJedi I've been watching your videos for a long time and I have to say, you have the best Cities: Skylines videos on UA-cam. Your voice and tone, unlike many others, is very calm and soothing. Keep it up! I would suggest that you design your thumbnails in a better, minimalist way.
Your vids help me so much! i had not played in years and all the new content was very intimidating. I love the intersection tool, had no idea that it existed.
Finally got around to checking out this tutorial and I quite like it. Starting a new city has always been hard for me, and hopefully this will be very useful when I next give it a try. One thing I've picked up from another tutorial that I want to run by you as an idea: Spacing roads 9 spaces apart (1 beyond the guide line) thus leaving a 1-space gap between zone-able spaces, which are 4 squares deep. This way, I can build pedestrian paths between the backsides of buildings, allowing greater freedom of movement for people and bikes without needing cars. Periodic crosspaths linking up to streets can help, especially at intersections with crosswalks, but it's not entirely necessary. Also optional is the apparently popular trend among modders of building elevated pedestrian paths. While these do look cool and allow paths to cross over roads via bridges (which can be very useful in high-traffic areas where you don't want cars being stopped by pedestrians), I've found that ground level paths can work just as well, especially in residential areas. Also, for those willing to brave the Workshop, look up various avenue/boulevard parks that have built-in pedestrian paths. These have proven wonderfully successful in my cities for separating the noise of main feeder roads from residential housing while also boosting building ratings and allowing that freedom of pedestrian movement. Best of all is if you can put them behind low-density commercial buildings built along said feeder road, adding that benefit of local shopping to the list of advantages. I now almost always build my residential districts with this plan in mind: paths between houses, avenue parks separating houses from shops and big roads, shops along main roads at the borders of residential neighborhoods.
This will help me a lot when I play my new purchase of Cities Skylines! Watching a lot of videos first :) Love how informative you are and your accent, very nice, subscribed!
Dude l'm new to this game. Love the way you explained and presented this video. Precise and to the point and your voice sounds super friendly. Definitely easy to listen to. Keep up the good work!
The first time I played this 3 years ago I was looking at your guide. Picked up the game again the other day due to steam sale and you upload an updated one lol
For all the wonders that is Cities:Skylines, small towns do not generally connect with massive two lanes highways. Getting a town started in this context always gives me "writers block", so it's always nice to see how other people does it.
This helped out a lot with making my first successful city. I played blind with my first 3 cities and they all went to hell. Started up my next one on a different map that what you used in this guide but followed the road set up. Just you mentioning to keep an eye on the green, blue, yellow bars for the city's need of residential, commercial and industry buildings helped out a lot. I still need to work on my traffic management though since my city has gotten bigger but I really only made one way to get to any part of the city. With the city getting larger too I started running out of raw materials for industry, so I need to start expanding into new territory I think. I basically stayed in my one square of territory until I couldn't fit anything else into it. I'm about 8 hours into this city now and it has stayed profitable and never went into the negatives. Still a lot of other stuff I need to get right but trying to figure out a lot of management stuff on my own and it's mostly working out for now. Thanks for the guide, it helped a lot! P.S. has anyone ever told you you kind of sound like Criken?
These videos are always fun to watch, even if I never can reach the level of functionality that your cities have. But a funny thing happened to me another day, while I was building island-based city, like in Batman Arkham Knight, which I appropriately named Gotham. I landscaped a small island at the bay between two major islands, just have a place to put the statue of liberty. But accidentally it was at middle of the route where cruise ships travel. So whenever cruise ship arrives to harbor, it will travel across the little island that is on its path :)
I've been playing SimCity since SimCity 2000 and I've always been intrested in this sort of game. I've been thinking of buying this game for a very long time, so when I stumbled opon this video, I decided to buy it at last! Loving this content! Keep it Up
Thank you for this video. It is very very helpful cause I used to make a square with commercial on the outside and residential on the inside. Then build another square for industrial and it looked really ugly. Now I'm making my cities more connected because of this!
I know that you're one of the mods, :D. I see you giving people tips and stuff all the time. I just figured you'd want to upload this. I don't know if I will, though.
Nobienify i dont see how people should be asking on how to start their own cities. It's helpful, except, it's a sandbox game, you can design your city to fit your personal needs, everything you need is in the game, you just need to know how to use it :)
I'm new to this game and terrible at just about everything. I'm not sure if you play this game anymore but you make it look so easy! I'll try and follow some of your basic building principles next time. Great videos 👍
How nice it is to see someone actually playing the game without unlimited cash. Some think they are the bees knees because they can build a massive city without worrying about money. :o
IJ! You are pretty much the reason I started playing Cities Skylines! I play on Xbox one so it's not nearly as good of course but still many thanks. Great content and keep it up
Hey, great to see you updating this for all the marvelous new features. I learned the game by watching your original series, it was awesome! Thank you for the time and energy you put into sharing your knowledge with people on here. Are you using Discord yet? All the best from Montreal!
Hi IJ I love your videos especially the no mods. I am so glad you picked a map with hills and rivers. It gives us a chance to use the new transit DLC. Your calm way of explaining how to do different intersection builds are fantastic. I have now made my own collection of assets, ranging from parks to intersections. If I can't find what I am after in the workshop. Well hey I build it myself. Thank you for being an inspiration to us nooobs, and veterans to the game alike. 😜 👍 😎 PS: I can't wait for the next episode to this series. It will be the first time I have started one with you from the beginning.
Always with the early bridges! Once I graduate from vanilla into modded building, I'm going to try to replicate small town America, which almost never has bridges except for crossing highways, rails, and rivers.
very informative and helped a lot. total newb at the game. just picked it up today. moving a little fast when it came to the utilities. wasnt sure if i needed the pipes within the city as well or just to connect straight to the output.
This makes me want to go back to playing vanilla and just enjoy the game. I've found that now that I'm loaded with mods and assets that I spend waaayy too much time detailing and worrying about perfecting everything. While it's still enjoyable, it just isn't the same as when I first started playing.
hey imperial. I seen you use this before, is great for starting. lately i been using something very similar (which you inspired me to do) except i raise the main strip so that it makes infrastructure easier later on. costs alot of money at the start but well rewarding.
Dude i appreciate this series. Such a awesome game! I have tried it back when it came out but got frustrated after the city i had grown for serveral hours just evolved in a huge unprofitable mess :P but i hope that this series will help me get it done right.
Hey guys! I've just started a new series on making some fun intersections without mods - ua-cam.com/video/lIOGo4n9wxU/v-deo.html
Just bought this game. You are a legend full of knowledge :-)
ImperialJedi I play on PS4 :(
Please make a video reenacting "Leonardo Watch" from "Blood Blockade Battlefront" xD
G'day your knowledge of the game unparalleled but as I have just bought the game the first road you place and immediately delete could you please explain that is done because I tried to do this several times without success. Watch 500 lets plays, download 1000 different mods and assets, start up a map, be overwhelmed, close game, watch another 500 lets plays.
exactly the same with me but when I bought the game and opened it, my game froze because my laptop is too weak to run it.. :((
Mapuia Pachuau when i started the game, i literally just design my own roads then highlight ALL of the zones, eventually there was too many traffic congestions hahahaha

i watched this and i made hell itself and it was profitable for a while
Mapuia Pachuau I door that all the time and I watch conflictnerd mostly lol
Thank you so much. I struggle with the first move with the highway ramps
James Ondari me too
Screw you, i brought my current city to 40k people with decent traffic and now i want to start a new city because your cities give me do many ideas xD
Laurens Peschko lmfao
Laurens Peschko unlike conflictnerd he does a battery method every time ;)
This guy does something new and makes me want to restart a city and try again =)
I've never played a game that was so enjoyable to start over lol

Hey guys - sorry for the delay in getting the second episode out, just swamped with work IRL. I'll try and get it out for tomorrow :)
you are like the Bob Ross of Cities skylines
ImperialJedi. I need help ever time i reach 2020 i start losing money then i go into minis money then my people leave then i have to restart
It didn’t help me change the direction
abe sbeiti road upgrade tool and right click on the roads you want to change.
Oliver Corfield it didn’t work for me it said not on this type of road and I tried all of the roads
ImperialJedi, I can't tell you how many times I have watched these videos of yours. I just got this game a few weeks ago, never knew it existed. Just started watching your older series and this was the most pleasant surprise! Keep them coming, and a g'day from Australia!

My building skill is at a corrupt African warlord compared to you..
+Mr Green haha that got a good laugh out of me
Yesssss😂😂😂
😂😂😂
Mine too. Except a blind, arthritic African warlord.
I can't even correctly start out
I looked for tutorials to help me improve traffic flow, but now I just forgot about that while enjoying the video like a Bob Ross episode.
You're a good speaker!
Holy shit, the right click to change the one-way road thing. THIS CHANGES. EVERYTHING.
Great video, thumbs up
Best video I've come across yet. Really appreciate the calm, thoughtful insight on road building. I learned a few things that where driving me crazy.
Hey I missed you too! Thanks for coming back! Hope you enjoyed making the YT content.
A little tip when splitting a large road into two with regards to good lane use, place your large road eight units back and your smaller roads four units apart, then use free form mode and link to end of smaller roads curving them one at a time into the large road. its weird but watching you build roads is lowering my stress. Thanks so much.
Your voice is so soothing. I watch your videos to help me fall asleep at night
Nice vid, man! I just bought this game a couple nights ago. Was an avid simcity 2013 player back then, so I’ve been hyped to get back into a city builder again. Solid examples and tips!
These guides help sooo much when I get stumped in this game, thank you so much for explaining it and drawing the layout out!
This was exceptionally clear and thorough and didn't waste my time. You have a pleasant voice. Thank you so much!
Thanks a TON for this. Just picked up this game for the PS4 and you saved me such a massive headache. Great starting guide!
Drop a like if this was helpful!
Happy building!
ImperialJedi I have yet to watch one of your videos and not learn something new
That honestly makes me happy to hear!
ImperialJedi I Really am into this video, it helps in the basics of starting a new city in city skylines, thanks for making this video ☺
Your vids help me so much! i had not played in years and all the new content was very intimidating. I love the intersection tool, had no idea that it existed.
even though I do not play this on the PC, I play on the Xbox One. I follow along with what you're showing and it's really helping
I like how this guy says how far they are going out by with the roads because it is extremely helpful
As a new player this is the most helpful tutorial I have found, and your voice is so calming and nice. Thank you so much
This will help me a lot when I play my new purchase of Cities Skylines! Watching a lot of videos first :) Love how informative you are and your accent, very nice, subscribed!
So happy that you started a new series for new players! Thank you !
fantastic guide 👍😀
+Biffa: Strategy, Survival & Indie Games thanks Biffa! That means a lot
Biffa: Strategy, Survival & Indie Games Bifa!!!!

I've been playing the game for a few years now and I didn't know some of the stuff you've told here. Goog work!
For all the wonders that is Cities:Skylines, small towns do not generally connect with massive two lanes highways. Getting a town started in this context always gives me "writers block", so it's always nice to see how other people does it.
great to see another well informed video on starting cities jedi. awesome tips for new and old players alike. cant wait to see more.
Thank you so much for this! My husband and I just started playing and your videos have been a huge help!
That roundabout is pretty cool, I probably would've never thought about that!
I have been enjoying the no mods series. I'm looking forward to what you do with this city.
This helped out a lot with making my first successful city. I played blind with my first 3 cities and they all went to hell. Oh boy, I never knew about the traffic light and stop sign options. This will solve alot of problems for me... thx dude
Thanks. Really helped me get started. Watched the first 7 and came back to the start when I started building.
Thanks so much Will for this new series! I kinda got lost in the old one to be honest.
Really like where this series is going! Thanks!
There were some really good tips for newbie in here, as far as controls and UI goes - thanks!
Your videos all remind me of The Joy of Painting
Jay Minus how does city building remind you of Bob Ross?
Fantastic! I was thinking the same thing. The way he talks is very Rossian. "We're just gonna put a happy little industrial zone in right here."
Except there are mistakes and no happy accidents
Thank you for this video. It is very very helpful cause I used to make a square with commercial on the outside and residential on the inside. Then build another square for industrial and it looked really ugly. Now I'm making my cities more connected because of this!
thanks buddy I was so overwhelmed by this game at first but this tutorial is really helpful
I went by this because i was having issues getting my city up and going thanks lots for the video it helped tremendously
So helpful! I couldn't figure out how to get water and power until I saw this.
I started with the sand box just seeing what I could do, I got the feel for the game and it’s pretty fun.
Thanks for the video man!
Just bought the game on the steam sale, wish i watched this guide earlier, you're very good, thanks for the tips
You should pin this on the Skylines subreddit or at least make a post. There’s always a ton of people asking how to start their cities there.
+Nobienify I'm actually one of the mods over there so I don't want to self promote - but totally feel free to post it yourself :)
I know that you're one of the mods, :D. I see you giving people tips and stuff all the time. I just figured you'd want to upload this. I don't know if I will, though.
Nobienify i dont see how people should be asking on how to start their own cities. It's helpful, except, it's a sandbox game, you can design your city to fit your personal needs, everything you need is in the game, you just need to know how to use it :)
this is such a good video, it was relaxing and non stressful to watch and listen too, and i definitely understand the game better. thank you so much!
Hmm, very interesting sir...
Sam Bur maybe you could review the city after it's done :p
I'm sure jedi would appreciate a good critique. Especially from someone of your expertise.
+Sam Bur oh hey I know you!
Thanks for watching - hope I didn't facepalm too many times for you!!
:)
ImperialJedi don't worry. All good :)
Phew!
Oh, I just recently noticed Sam knows ImperialJedi after suggesting contacting him for some rework on built cities. The world is soo small!
Thank you so much for this video! It's extremely helpful to a new player who's bad at planning roads.
This helps so much as far as road building. I'm playing on xbox... So don't have quite the same control, but it's better than what I was doing.
Was looking for something just like this. I just bought cities skylines and you are the first to use a highway that utilizes exits.
Dude you are awesome! Just started this game as I got it on steam sale and this video has helped me so much.
I kinda understand the "I am a painter and I still watch this" comments under bob ross videos now. Great job!
I'm new to this game and terrible at just about everything. I'm not sure if you play this game anymore but you make it look so easy! I'll try and follow some of your basic building principles next time. Great videos 👍
Extremely helpful guide and lots of pro tips to really help the beginners! Great work!
Really helpfull vids u producing, from all the vids there are , u by far the one who explains the best. cheers and keep up the good work.
it's so enjoyable to see you playing this one, a lot of useful information!
I have more than 200 hrs in this game but holy molly, this was pretty helpful. Really. Thanks!
How nice it is to see someone actually playing the game without unlimited cash.
Some think they are the bees knees because they can build a massive city without worrying about money. :o
Really easy to watch and very useful. I'll definitely be working my way through your series for tips. Cheers! 👍🏼
IJ! You are pretty much the reason I started playing Cities Skylines! I play on Xbox one so it's not nearly as good of course but still many thanks. Great content and keep it up
4:14 I’ve been playing this game for 4 years and I had no idea you could do that
Hey, great to see you updating this for all the marvelous new features. I learned the game by watching your original series, it was awesome! Thank you for the time and energy you put into sharing your knowledge with people on here. Are you using Discord yet? All the best from Montreal!
Thanks so much for taking the time to make this video. It helped me out :)
PS: I can't wait for the next episode to this series. It will be the first time I have started one with you from the beginning.
Thanks for the video! Gives me another strategy for when I start a new map. Also, enjoyed the live stream on Twitch!
Your road layout is so beautiful
when i make roads it looks like a mondrian
This helped a lot because I love the game but I didn’t k ow how to play and I would always just loose money, so this helped a lot thanks
Always with the early bridges! Once I graduate from vanilla into modded building, I'm going to try to replicate small town America, which almost never has bridges except for crossing highways, rails, and rivers.
Wow cool! That little round-a-bout trick is super awesome, thanks!
Just started playing the game. That roundabout and that one intersection instead of one..just awesome ^^
My town kept going to shit around boom town milestone, I used this as a guideline and got over 30k pop and 1M cash. Thanks dude!
I was watching your new player guide series, , just started a new city. thanks for the vid
Your voice is very relaxing to listen to. Subbed!
very informative and helped a lot. total newb at the game. just picked it up today. moving a little fast when it came to the utilities. wasnt sure if i needed the pipes within the city as well or just to connect straight to the output.
This makes me want to go back to playing vanilla and just enjoy the game. I've found that now that I'm loaded with mods and assets that I spend waaayy too much time detailing and worrying about perfecting everything. While it's still enjoyable, it just isn't the same as when I first started playing.
Great video. I just got the game and how to start laying down roads had me struggling.
Subscribed my friend! What a great tutorial!
Thank you, thank you, thank you. So helpful! Also, Merry Christmas.
I immediately liked this vid before watching as it was made on my birthday! :D
hey imperial. I seen you use this before, is great for starting. lately i been using something very similar (which you inspired me to do) except i raise the main strip so that it makes infrastructure easier later on. costs alot of money at the start but well rewarding.
This video was a total game changer for me, thank you!
Dude i appreciate this series. Such a awesome game! I have tried it back when it came out but got frustrated after the city i had grown for serveral hours just evolved in a huge unprofitable mess :P but i hope that this series will help me get it done right.
