  • Whether we like it or not, sports card grading companies are here to stay. Regardless of whether you prefer ‪@SGCGrading‬ or ‪@PSAcard_Official‬ or Beckett, it's important for all of us to stay current with what is happening in the card grading space. Additionally, the hobby should be rooting for each of them to be successful, to continue putting pressure on each other to innovate and improve. In my conversation with Adam from ‪@SplendidSports‬, we discuss the strengths and weaknesses or each of these companies and areas they could potentially improve for the future. Be sure to share your opinion on where things stand and the areas you want to see improvement in the market.

    Whenever the topic card values of PSA and SGC is discussed and why PSA is more, I have a one word answer. REGISTRY... That aspect was genius for PSA. High rollers want a way to say they have the best set. Until SGC makes inroads in some way in that area, they will stay in second. And yes, Beckett stills has a price guide.

    • @MidLifeCards

      Ultimately, I'm hoping a 3rd party does a combined registry that allows for SGC and PSA cards to be included.

    Great video. I find it interesting that most of the discussion about the grading companies barely ever mention anything about the actual accuracy and consistancy of grading.Its always about resale value ,slabs,turnaround times etc. It seems like the thing that grading was originally intended for is the thing that most people care the least about.

    • @MidLifeCards
      @MidLifeCards  6 місяців тому +1

      I think that’s a great point. The problem is that it’s difficult to use finite data to articulate grades. Grades and grading accuracy is an opinion. Turnaround times and cost are factually based and can be proven. The “look” of the slab and the “consistency” of grading is hard to prove…so it’s hard to turn the screws to them too much on those issues.

      Example: Last year I had 2 1975 Topps Roger Staubach raw cards I decided to get graded. Card 1: off center (with sharp corners). Card 2: centered (front & back) with sharp corners. Sent Card 1 to SGC & came back 6. Card 2 (the better-or so I assumed) went off to PSA and came back a 4.😒 I honestly don't get what they're seeing at PSA?

    Graig, I'd venture to guess that there is no way in hell that Mangini or BlueJacket, or ..... would crossover all of their cards to SGC for free. If you want consistency, go the Mangini and Double D route by designing your own custom slabs. Grade your own cards, create custom labels with subgrades, avoid sending your cards to a company which you complain about, save $15 per card and put that money back into the hobby and buy more cards. Good conversation, thanks for the video!

    So what I got out of this is that when I buy an SGC graded card I am paying what I consider fair market value because Im paying just for the card but if I purchase a PSA graded card I have to pay 40% more because PSA has a set registry that I care nothing about and don’t use but the card will still cost more because of a service the company offers that I don’t use that basically has nothing to do with the card I want. Seems like throwing money away to me

    • @MidLifeCards
      @MidLifeCards  6 місяців тому

      To some extent I agree. But, I think that it also has to do with the increased demand for PSA slabs because a lot of collectors want their slabs to match and at the moment, PSA slabs have a higher resale value....probably because of higher demand for the reasons you and I mention. But, in a way...yes, I think that's one way of looking at it.

      The most expensive card ever sold if I'm not mistaken, the Mantle 1952 Topps, in a SGC slab. Honus Wagner, who I think, is also one of the top 5 most expensive cards. Sold for 6 to 7 million. I have no skin in the game or preference between the two companies, but I think the price difference/resale value is a bit overblown. Looking at some of the data. If I was into labels I would go with HGA, they make some great color matching labels that accentuate the card. I too like the black boarder of SGC, to me it accentuates the cards and makes them really stand out. Except for cards with black or really dark boarders, then I would prefer them in a clear holder. So to me it's all about the presentation and protection of the card itself, and isn't that what's important? A 1952 Mantle and also, Honus Wagner, which I think sold for over 6, or 7 million dollars. So I guess not all the investors with deep pockets care about the slab, but card too. Thanks for the video!!! I think that you covered a lot of the issues in this video. However, I think you missed two very important ones.
    CGC has the best slabs if you just want to display the card well. Their black label is very neutral and their plastic is better than every other company. About a year ago I made the decision that I would only put PC Cards in CGC holders.
    TAG a disruptor in this industry. And for those that are curious, I’m not a TAG bot. For a long time I was curious about TAG. So a few months ago, I sent some cards to them just to see what it was like to have TAG grade them. I have gotten cards graded with six different companies. The TAG experience is by far the best. The key question is always why did my card get the grade it received? TAG includes an online report which shows you a detailed analysis of the card and where any flaw exist. This is a game changer. TAG’s volumes are growing rapidly. For those of us that don’t care about a registry or slab consistency, TAG will soon be the industry standard. Why? PSA and SGC can’t duplicate what they are doing quickly and efficiently. If you want to see what I am talking about, I can make a short video and email it to you. Also, TAG slabs rival CGC slabs. This surprised me.

I am sure we all have lots to say about this topic.....but I will just summarize mine as a long time collector and grader. BGS has been losing market share for 15 years and is in trouble to survive or be relevant. SGC is making a little ground up on PSA but hardly any. Lets not forget SGC has been around a lot longer than people realize and they are still in the large shadow of PSA. PSA will remain king unless something catastrophic happens. Their back log mess got SGC some extra business but not enough. PSA has really worked on their turnaround times in the last 6 months for sure. If they get their turn around times close to 2 months or less (which they have been getting a ton done in about a month lately) this will make the gap even bigger between PSA and SGC. I hope SGC can do some more business because it will make PSA have to change a little. I could be off my rocker too!! Ha Ha Thanks again for all that you guys do. Its greatly appreciated!

    I have sooooo many thoughts! I think the vintage market share SGC has grabbed over the past several years has exploded because of their fair grading and fast turnaround time. I think they are happy with the trajectory of that vintage market share they keep buying into - but the real growth is modern and TCG. That’s the money booth with the most dollars flying around in it - and I think they get more ROI from every dollar they spend trying to capture those revenue streams than anywhere else. It’s why you see them advertising modern and TCG discounts regularly… that’s the growth area for them. To the extent a label/slab change/evolution helps them capture more of that market - they should absolutely do it.

    SGC should slim down that case and drop the black jagged insert, but keep the black background in the slab without an insert. The thick cases they have do it well and are far better.

    Outstanding video!
    for me, I can care less about the registry. I’ve been collecting Sports Card since 1975 still have many of them to this day been getting them graded since The late 90s, I remember when PSA used to have a table at “Frank and son’s “‘s in Walnut California.
    I very rarely sell any of my cards, but someday is coming I’m sure.
    I think the SGC slab is great looking. I’ve been submitting many cards very happy with the grades I’ve been getting and the turnaround time.. I am in my late 50s maybe that’s why I like the SGC slabs better… lol

    Valid points from both of you guys. As far as customer service goes I'd have to give it to SGC, PSA has been so big for so long they have gotten full of themselves, Beckett has just plain and simply lost touch with the modern hobby. Beckett has somehow gone from the biggest name in the hobby to an also ran. Once Dr Beckett left the company really went down hill. They had the brand recognition to take PSA behind the woodshed if they had wanted to in the beginning rather than focusing on fleecing collectors and holding their databases ransom as they came into the internet age of the hobby. When it comes to fanatics taking on of the grading companies, I hope that they are not allowed to monopolize another part of our beloved hobby.

    One strange thing I am starting to see is that yes PSA graded cards outsell BGS graded cards but not so much at 10s vs 10s. It seems to me that BGS 10 graded cards are selling for more now then PSA 10 graded cards 80% of the time. But then comes along something like Jeters RC and the PSA sells for 10X the BGS card, its strange.

    I have a lot of PSA slabs that have cards moving around inside of them which can easily cause damage to the edges and surface. A lot of those slabs are even from 2023. So the plastic sleeve that Beckett uses is actually good because it protects the card from moving. I understand BGS slabs are not as clear, but any big cards that I buy I prefer to be in Beckett slabs just because of the protection. 90% of my cards are PSA but if I’m buying a really expensive card, and I have the choice, I prefer it in BGS. I have a few SGC, but their slabs look and feel cheap to me. They feel and look like a homemade project. So I only buy SGC if they’re super super cheap and even then they’re not cards I’m really targeting. I prefer to pay more for cards I’m targeting in PSA & BGS slabs. It’s good to have multiple grading companies because they honestly all have issues and the competition can help us all. Hopefully BGS cleans up their act and becomes relevant again, but the PSA services/pop reports are streamlined the best. The others are way behind.

    • @blueodum
      @blueodum 6 місяців тому

      They are a major player, but they were starting from zero in terms if sports cards not very long ago. IMO, they have come a long way in a short time. Note, they are now CGC across the board (CSG is no longer in use).

    • @MidLifeCards

      Authenticating and grading do have overlap, but who people want their cards encapsulated by, is the main focus of this particular discussion. I think CGC is more of a comic and TCG grader at this point.

    I’m not attached to a specific grading company. I like SGC’s service and I like vintage and some modern cards in their slabs. I grade with PSA for aftermarket autographed cards that SGC doesn’t do, and I have a few PSA registries. I haven’t graded with Beckett but I have a few non-card autographs I plan to send them. But my overall opinion on grading is that competition is good. It helps keep pricing in check and keeps these companies from getting complacent with their innovations.

    Graig, I am happy having my cards in different slabs does not bother me. I have PSA, SGC, Becket in old and new slabs and even GAI as most of my unopened collection was graded before PSA graded unopened. It would cost me a fortune to get them all looking the same. At this moment I send to SGC, like their consistency but do realize their holder is bulkier. I used to belong to PSA club when they gave you a coupon for 6 or 15 graded cards but do not want to pay one hundred dollars just so I can use their service plus I do not like their new magazine. The turnover and service at SGC is more customer friendly. I also take advantage of buying SGC graded card for a lesser price for the same grades as PSA.

    • @MidLifeCards
      @MidLifeCards  6 місяців тому

      You can submit a card for review. It's one of the options on their grading website. So, you can send in a card in a PSA holder, without needing to crack it, and they will give it another look. They won't drop the grade, but the MIGHT up the grade. My Dad once had a PSA 9 Montana RC that was perfect. He resubmitted it, and they gave it a 10.

    Negatives... BVG as opposed to BGS- not needed, each vintage card is automatically graded as others from the same vintage period anyway...BVG dropped subgrades- why?- they were ahead of there time and now the other grading companies are starting to acknowledge the importance of this in todays grading environment...BGS does not guarantee older BVG/BGS grades 2012 and back?- makes little sense, they were so much tougher graders early on anyway.... BVG had a run of grading obviously trimmed cards (usually one edge) in many (2005 -2012?) vintage grading- never addressed or fixed.

    I don’t think “grading” is a thing that improves the hobby as much as it has detracted from the hobby. To me the hobby is a collecting hobby If the card is nicer looking and happens to be more valuable because of its centering & condition then great. The detractor is that “collectors” don’t collect cards they collect grades, price tags, a registry, a population and investments. They probably don’t even read the back, learn about the player/game/set or watch the sport the player plays(ed).
    If a buyer is concerned buying off the internet they may need more pictures or maybe 3rd party authentication not necessarily a grade. Not to mention it is an opinion of that grader at the time. They want to say they are professional graders yet there is no qualification or consistent training required. Many companies give the same card a different grade if u send it back to you & there are also many mistakes made
    I know my opinion and comments are not the majority or popular. But I think grading is only as you said “here to stay” only because people have “bought” into it. I have some graded cards that I bought graded because the deal I got on a nice looking card that happens to be in a holder but I want to feel touch and experience collecting cards. Authentication is helpful as well when selling but the value is in the eye of the seller and the buyer otherwise. If collectors want thier cards to match maybe they can break them out of those slabs and slide them in a toploader or mag. I think collectors would rather add another $20 card over lining PSAs pockets further w $$$$. I know I feel that way. I apologize for the rant. Take care ⚾️⚾️🦏🦏🦏
