  • "Cheers for Miss Bishop" is a film based on the novel "Miss Bishop" by Bess Streeter Aldrich. This film marked the debut of Rosemary De Camp.
Miss Ella Bishop is a teacher at a small town Midwestern college. The story is told in flashback and takes place over many years, from the 1880s to the 1930s, showing her from her freshman year to her retirement as an old woman. At the beginning, she lives with her mother and her vixenish cousin Amy; she remembers when her father had a farm near the town. Ella is an inhibited girl whose frustration grows as she approaches womanhood. Her ambition to teach causes her to lose her only opportunity for true love, and her life becomes one of missed chances and wrong choices.
She is engaged to lawyer Delbert Thompson; but she learns, to her distress, that Amy is pregnant by him. Delbert and Amy run off together; but Amy dies in childbirth, leaving Ella to care for Amy's daughter Hope. Hope grows up and marries Richard, and they move away and have a daughter named Gretchen. Ella also has a fling with another teacher, the unhappily married John Stevens, but she eventually breaks off the relationship; later, she is distressed to learn that John has been killed.
Through all the years, Ella is supported by her friend Sam Peters, a local grocer. Another source of support is Professor Corcoran, the college president who hires her as a teacher and persuades her to stay when she considers leaving. His death is a blow to Ella. As Ella reaches old age, she reflects back and realizes she allowed the years to go by without achieving what she believes to be true fulfillment. However, the years have not been without glory; and her moment of triumph arrives when her numerous now-famous students from over the years return to a testimonial dinner at the school to honour their beloved Miss Bishop.
    ---
Directed by Tay Garnett, produced by Richard A. Rowland, written by Bess Streeter Aldrich (novel), Stephen Vincent Benet, Sheridan Gibney and Adelaide Heilbron, starring Martha Scott as Ella Bishop, Edmund Gwenn as Professor Corcoran, Don Douglas as Delbert, William Gargan as Sam Peters, Sterling Holloway as Chris, Dorothy Peterson as Mrs. Bishop, Sidney Blackmer as John Stevens, Mary Anderson as Amy, Marsha Hunt as Hope and Rosemary De Camp as Minna.

Lovely heart warming old movie... The main character Miss Bishop certainly had a real vocation for education and enlightenment. It reminded me of my Mother who taught for about 35 years, raised her family, is still married, and is still helping others.

All of the students who I worked with in the pass are in their 30s by now. I never see any of them because they are probably in Fort Lauderdale or they moved away. I was happy to work with them. Those jobs beat working in a store with a bunch of unruly adults who tore the place every day. My aunt was teaching school by the time that she was 16. The government offered her the job because they needed to train teachers in St Kitts even if the trainees were under 18.

I still thrive in watching this. I just wish the film could be restored. The most moving part to me was the close of her final speech 1:19. I believe that these could be the final days of our young country because our freedoms, rights, and safety have been stolen from us. She is so right in all she taught. God bless her memory. Even though Miss Bishop was a fictional character she embodies the values taught from the beginning of our country through my earliest years in school. I so wish it could have been cherished and preserved.

Love of country is what keep a country great - to have love and respect of other people also. Miss Bishop turned down the opportunity to travel in Europe with the man she loved because he could not get a divorce and she did not want to be a bad influence on her students - this was an honorable sacrifice.

It is very interesting to stop and check out the author of this book that inspired the movie, Bess Streeter Aldrich (1881-1954) . I see so many similarities! She went to a university and did get an advanced degree and had worked in her collage, as a supervisor and taught for 4 years.. She had 4 children and was left to raise them all alone on her own salary as a writer, as her husband was in Alaska then died, in 1909. This is a refection of her life and how she felt.

As a whole they are devoid of any morality, character, or dedication to the “original standards” of education. They agree to accept and teach inferior material, thereby purposely dumbing down their students and they indoctrinate rather than educate! Parents, truly love and protect your precious children. Never allow them set foot in any government school. They are ALL bastions of Godless immorality. NO, your school is not the exception. They are regulated by politically correct

Miss Mellie they made all the older women look real old in movies, ( men too).
Even women in their late 50s were portrayed old type mothers. Watch the movie Marty, where the mother is only 59. This did not change until the movies of the 80s.

Yes, in public schools...and then it's even worse in university. First time I went in the 1970's I liked it. Returned in mid 90's and found the instructors opinionated and rude. Returned again around 2010 and pulled out before finishing the first semester. The instructors were telling ME about life in the 1960's, approximately 10 years before they were even born, and they were telling such vile, spun distorted versions and no opportunity for rebuttal. If you wanted a good grade you parrot back what they said. Never again!!!!

Look how much we pay career military officers who really should be public school teachers in peacetime and especially during their retirement years where most military retirees just hole themselves up as recluses or play golf all day, i.e., if they weren't able to snag a plum job as a defense contractor or consultant (only generals and admirals need apply). Every retired military person should be required to become a school teacher if they want to continue receiving retirement benefits. Also, public school teacher pay needs to increase across the board commensurate with student performance and graduation rates, so teachers would be motivated to teach well. (Pay for performance.)

gotwa229 well how about that most teachers are communist socialist and they don't believe in high pay Etc everybody should receive the same pay no matter what they do so what do we do about that? I have always believed that teachers should be paid more I don't believe that basketball player should receive $1000000 play game that children play that's not being an adult we've made Heroes out of morons who party nightly drunken or drug-addicted commit date rape and get off and have dog fight rings and then refuse to stand for the national anthem in respect for the country that gave them those Millions. instead of putting money into the areas that need help most of these forever children waste Millions on Mansions cars and drugs what little they do in charity doesn't make a change in their Community . teachers are the first line of defense when it comes to creating a better Society but we stop doing that why should they care where they watch people playing children's games making millions while they have to take second jobs? and then why do you think that they believe that it should be a communist or socialist society where everybody makes the same wage that way if everybody is only making a specific living wage whether they work or not but nobody starves nobody goes hungry and nobody has to worry about making their rent ain't nobody can shove it in your face that they can stand on a football field hold their fists in the air and basically say f u to that teacher sitting in the stands will never make the millions that that person is making who is there on the front lines trying to make a difference why do you think they're trying to push the Communist agenda? Because then finally they would be considered just as important as that million-dollar basketball player

A large part of the movie is missing. I wish I knew what happened during the time from Miss Ella's niece trying on the wedding dress until suddenly she was an old woman talking to the next generation getting ready to marry. That's alot of information missing. Surely the movie wasn't originally made that way. What happened? Is there another version somewhere with the missing part? I'd sure like to see it.
Thank you for this movie. It's a good one! Awfully sad though. Having the love of her life taken away by someone in her own family. How awful! Of course he had a major part of what happened. How could he have done that? Oh I know it happens every day in this generation. But I thought people back then had more moral fortitude. It's discouraging to know that the same things have been happening all along.
