    One of the main things that a big family want to know is what luggage space is like with 7 seats in place compared to rivals, and this wasn't covered at all, or even shown! Otherwise it looks like a competent rival to something like the Skoda Kodiak, although significantly more expensive.

    • @carbuyer

      Hi Rob. Space with all seven-seats in place isn't great, but it's on par with rivals. You can see a shot of the load area at 7:35 - hopefully this helps!

    Mate, you must be doing something right because I don't normally sit through a full car review. My takeaway from this video is that Kia has come a very long way to challenge something like a Volvo or a Disco. But that amazing 7 year warranty is still it's main selling point. Would I consider buying one? Yes & no. I live right in the Aussie bush. Which means rough dirt tracks & a creek crossing (most seasons). Would the Kia be able to handle that & is a snorkel an option that you would even want on this beautiful vehicle?

    From reading the comments I think I am with Tom Hope on this one. Yes, the Kia looks nice and is well equipped for the £42k a mid range will set me back. But as someone who wants a genuine capable tow car then it losses to the Rexton. The Rexton has a kerb weight of 2.2 tonnes which is important when matching to a caravan for several reasons. The Rexton can tow 3.5 tonnes over the 2.5 tonnes of the Kia, again important for anyone who is towing horses or cattle. I think the Kia will suit a buyer who wants a large well priced SUV but for towing and practicality its the Rexton. I never see the point in comparing cars like the Kia or the Ssangyong to premium brands as they really are a different class. Go and drive a Discovery (which I have and the new Defender) and you would realise where the difference in price comes from. For the money this is a well equipped car though and will no doubt deliver in terms of reliability and running costs. Thank you for the review, I do reviews myself and know how much time they take!

    • @ivanwoolley3096
      @ivanwoolley3096 3 роки тому +1

      I couldn’t agree more. I have a 2019 Rexton ELX G4 and paid £31600 for it, brand new, in the UK, with a towbar fitted. I’d looked at the Sorrento but dismissed it immediately due to the towing capacity. I can’t believe these reviewers actually still compare apples with oranges! The Rexton gives you much more bang for your buck, or pound!

    • @hedydd2
      @hedydd2 3 роки тому

      While I agree with your reasoning and utility of the Rexton, the Defender is in a different class. The Defender is very nice indeed and I did order one for last March, but the lockdown and travel restrictions made it more desirable than something I actually needed, especially as I have a Ford Ranger to tow the 3.5 tons and until it broke down recently, a Land Cruiser Amazon in reserve. A friend has got a Defender First Edition for six months and I've been in that quite a bit and it's great. However the teething troubles with these things are as bad as ever and I'm not too keen on spending £60k on a machine that could be frustrating to own. I've run many Land and Range Rovers from new to 150,000 miles before now and when I had three on the fleet it drove me mad. Believe it or not I traded two in for three new Nissan Terrano's in one day and never regretted it for a minute, but still had an Amazon and iirc the Isuzu Trooper Citation LWB in the fleet back then. Did buy a Range Rover TD6 after that though and it happened to be excellent but I sold it before it was out of warranty.
      I've ordered a new diesel Sorento for delivery before Christmas and will see how it goes. If it has significant drawbacks I will not be shy of saying so. Since Land Rover let me down as a company once too often, I've zero loyalty to any brand or vehicle I own.

    • @carbuyer
      @carbuyer  3 роки тому +8

      It depends how you're going to use the car. The diesel is excellent on the motorway and especially so if you plan to tow a trailer. However, we feel the hybrid will suit more people as it's quick, quiet and refined - and surprisingly economical for such a large car.

    We bought a Kia Sorento in February 2021. For the last month we have nothing but problems with the car & the dealership at Robina QLD.
    The gearbox jerking when coming to a stop from second to first gear at lights. Also in reverse it’s quite bad. The dealership has admitted to having this issue with a few customers but they somehow say it ok as that’s how a “dual clutch system” works. Wtf!!!!🤷‍♂️
    The entertainment system & Apple car play faulty. It goes to a dark blank screen while driving & then nothing works. It happens spastically & the dealership tries to blame it on the cord. 🤦‍♂️.
    So this car winning car of the year is obviously based on rubbish assessment.

      No offense, but this car is nowhere near premium badge manufacturers. I had a previous Sportage with everything possible on the list, drove a few times the previous Sorento while mine was on service and it is nowhere near an Audi Q7 or even Volkswagen Touareg. Check them out yourself, go to the saloon, drive them and compare them it is a different story regarding everything. Kia is a car, that will do its job and that is it. High price when you buy Kia and a really difficult resale as no one wants to buy them even in prisitne condition. This latest Sorento reminds me of Renault Koleos from the front as well as from the side.

      Tricky one. The Kia Sorento will have more equipment and a better third row, but the ride quality on the Discovery Sport will be much better. I personally like the look of this Sorento, but I was disappointed with the ride quality, as that's important for me and the roads here aren't great. But as someone else said here, Land Rover is the most unreliable car brand and their repair times also take longer. I think I'll wait for the face-lifted Kodiaq and new generation X-Trail before deciding.

    • @carbuyer

      That's absolutely true, and for some reason the diesel will still be the best option. This hybrid is very good, though!

    • @hedydd2
      @hedydd2 3 роки тому

      I don't hesitate buying the diesel. It is very refined and torquey. It does have Adblue so should be even more economical, combined with the DCT, than my parsimonious XC90 which managed 42mpg on long trips, giving a tank range of a comfortable 600 miles. It might even match my 1.6 twin turbo Honda CR-V with nine speed automatic which now consistently gives an average of 42mpg and 45 on a long journey at motorway speeds. I once had an Audi Q7 which I thought very economical for its day at 30mpg [the same as a MkI Golf GTi back in its day] and it too had a 600 mile range but its tank was over 20 gallons compared to around 15 for the Volvo and 13.5 for the Honda. The saving in fuel cost of 12mpg is considerable and over time and several cars it amounts to a lot of money. Over just 15000 miles it is about 640 litres of fuel or £750 per vehicle per year.
      The gap has closed between petrol and diesel cars though and the turbo petrol hybrid in the video exceeded 40mpg and might improve as the miles loosens it up. For town and short journey use a petrol unit is the best bet, but out here in the sticks, especially with the convenience of home bunkering DERV, its diesel for me until I have no choice or the taxman makes it too expensive compared to alternatives.

    After a test drive I've bought the new Sorento. Should have it either next Friday or the Tuesday after, just in time for Christmas. It is to replace a four year old Volvo XC90. Both diesels, the Volvo being the 2.0 D5 with around 235hp. The Sorento has a lot to live up to but the suspension of it is more supple and road noise, indeed all noise far less in the Kia, so I'm confident it will measure up. It hasn't got the seat memories that the 4 and Volvo have, which I'm sure will annoy me, and neither has it the head up display and opening pano-roof that both 4 and XC90 have/had, but these I'll not miss. Otherwise it has even more technology and equipment than my Volvo had and I love that kind of stuff, including the safety kit. Only wish dash cams were built in front and rear rather than me have to piddle about D.I.Y. but very very few cars have these so far.

      My XC90 had mechanical suspension which is rather harsh and, dare I say, sporty. The 20" wheels and tyres are rather noisy and I changed mine for 19" ones with Pirelli tyres which were better but still not 'quiet'. The new Sorento comes with the same 19" dimension of tyres but with Continentals, similar to those 20" Continental fitted originally to the Volvo.

      I had a look at Discovery Sport the other day an after speccing up to the equivalent of the Kia it cost nearly £50k after discount. The GLB is around the same ballpark. Although I'm business contract hiring the Kia, the 3 diesel is discounted to just over £38k and the business contract hire is costing me £16/day including the deposit. No p/x. A pack of 20 common cigarettes costs £13.
      I did price a PCP for the same car and its guaranteed future value [optional baloon payment] is £18940 and from experience they tend to auction at around that and retail for 3 to 4K more. So I would expect the Kia Sorento 3 diesel to retail for around £22000 in three year's time. Which is about par for the course in percentage depreciation; not much difference in percentage loss to a Discovery Sport. There will be less Kia looking for a home for one thing. PCP far more expensive than Business Contract Hire with the downside, for some people, of having no option to purchase at the end of term. BCH only available to VAT registered businesses of course and the car will be sold and retailed '+VAT' in three year's time.

      @hedydd2 3 роки тому

      Of course you can. I have. In fact I'm changing an XC90 Inscription, with which I have been very happy, to a Sorento diesel. It is unfortunate that in the UK the diesel isn't offered in the top trim level but all I'll really miss from the Volvo is the lack of driver's seat memory linked to the driver profile and key. I've even got that on my Honda CR-V. Yes it will not have the head-up display or the pano roof the Volvo has either, neither of which I'll miss. It does have everything else though in a roomier and quieter interior. The road noise in the Volvo was quite distracting on most trips. I'm not loyal to any car brand and buy what I fancy at the time and I fancy the Sorento currently. I will only keep it for three years as the technology is changing so rapidly. My plan is to get a Tesla model Y from the Berlin factory after the Sorento.

      The Inscription normally has 285/R20 Contisilent tyres from the factory which are still notoriously noisy on the Volvo, partly due to tyre internal vibration but also due to the current generation's platform which is particularly prone to this. I changed my wheels to the optional 235/R19 with Pirelli scorpion tyres and that made more of a difference than the sponge filling inside the Contis. Mine is an Inscription D5.
      I know exactly my daily cost for running the Kia because I'm not purchasing this one. It is on a Business Contract Hire and costs me far less that two packets of cigarettes a day, including insurance and servicing and road tax but not fuel or consumables like tyres and wiper blades. The contract itself is only £16/day for three years or 36,000 miles, which includes the £3375 deposit [thereafter £12/day]. A packet of twenty common smokes apparently costs £13. I don't smoke or drink but do travel for business. ;-) I'm not a brand snob and procure what suits, when it suits. I can be seen, or have been seen in everything from Fiat Panda to Range Rovers and couldn't give a fig for what badge is stuck on.

      Your grasp of mathematics is sadly lacking. Even if the Kia depreciated a couple or three percent more than a Volvo, the £15,000 difference in initial purchase price ensures a substantially lower monetary, as opposed to percentage depreciation. The hire cost is a direct reflection of its potential depreciation and £16 a day is quite acceptable to me. The greater the potential depreciation, the higher the hire cost would be.
      Tyre noise on the XC90 is a well documented and accepted fact, especially when on 20" wheels. Other wheel combinations are better and like all tyre noise it is surface dependant. Also it depends what you had before. If you had mainly German cars previously then you might have a more favourable impression than otherwise.

      40+mpg from both petrol and diesel automatics is not exactly heavy on the juice by any standards. Obviously the Sorento is not your kind of car but it is a consistently strong seller for Kia as is the Santa-Fe for Hyundai. I'm trading a current model Volvo XC90 in for a Sorento and losing nothing but driver's seat memory, yet gaining even more technology and safety equipment than fitted to the Volvo yet it costs £15,000 less. The Kia is roomier inside, quieter and has a more supple ride and I expect it to match the Volvo's 40mpg fuel economy and possibly even match my Honda CR-V's 44mpg. For context, my first new car in 1977 was a Ford Fiesta 1300 which weighed less about a third of these cars, had power-nothing, no safety equipment apart from seatbelts, a collapsible steering column and dual circuit brakes [which totally failed on me twice] and did only 28mpg from 66hp. The Golf GTi 1.8 that followed weighed barely a ton and went like a rocket for its time [0-60 in about the same time as the diesel Kia Sorento] had almost no braking performance, a tiny fuel tank but the fuel injection improved the economy to 30mpg. Both had filthy polluting exhausts of course and ran, at that time, on leaded high-sulphur petrol. The Golf had about 150 mile range on a tankful. The Volvo, and I expect the Kia, have a safe 600 mile range on their 15.5 gallon [approx] 70litre tanks driven sensibly.
      You are probably more a smaller car person and Kia or Hyundai or VW or Ford, well somewhere there is a car to suit you better than a seven seat technology-stuffed 4x4 SUV.
