Rick, tyvvm for disobeying Linda this time &filming the journey. I absolutely love the scenery, even more,I absolutely am impressed by all the history you come up with about the places that you visit. Again, tyvvm.

In years past did alot of motorcycling, road bike. All over the country, long distance touring and camping. Had a good friend in tow. Great memories to this today at 74. Decided as I aged that balance and reaction time had slowed and put me more at risk, so sold my last bike, Honda ST1300. Great ride. Glad you are enjoying your 2-wheel time again. Thanks for sharing once again.
This is really awesome and very beautiful in this area of Montana especially on the rural back roads which are great to explore and especially on a motorcycle take care and have a great weekend thank you Rick and Linda.🏍️🇺🇲🚐👋
i know its hard to carry everything on a bike running for the day outing, but for the camping in that single tent a grey or black tarp under the tent is needed , the grey tarp is waterproof but the black tarp is insulated with a small film of or liner in the inside of the tarp, the felt part should up position. . just yesterday came back from pyramid lake in nv, fishing trip and camped near the lake , the wind can frost you quick, ! i placed a grey tarp over the tent completely and the wind could not come in. the trick for campers in a tent, for the cold and the wind, is tarp (blue ) on the ground first, a old large king size blanket or 2nd on top of the tarp, then the tent, on the inside anotherinside the tent, this insulates the tent completely
Haven't been in Fort Benton since 1977 when I measured the Missouri water flow for the USGS. Had to measure the total flow in cubic feet per second off the bridge with a crane and water meter. I loved that little burg. It sure looks different than it did when I was there. Thanks for taking us there.
Love the ferry! There was a ferry across the Kootenai River near Copeland, Idaho many years ago. We used to take the ferry to get to the West Side Road. As a child, it was a treat to take a ride on it when we would return to Idaho to visit the Grandparents. There is a bridge there now, built in late 1960's or early 1970's. Too bad. Thanks for the memories!
Love the motorcycle content. I motorcycled all my life until my heart disease put a stop to it. I still look at motorcycles and dream. Would love to have a project like your Gold Wing. God bless..
REALLY enjoyed this video. Loved the striking out alone on the motorcycle and just taking it all in. Thanks for all of your videos. The variety is great. Just got through with the Bluetti Charge 1 video. Very informative!
Nice setup for camping and traveling back roads. Can't wait to see more of these adventures. Hopefully you are getting some video of fixing 🔧up the Honda. I look forward to trips on that bike too! It's finally cooling down a bit here in South Texas so I'm going out for a ride on my T120. 🍻
Great trip, thanks for showing us part of Central Montana. I made one quick trip to Great Falls many years ago when I lived in Missoula......just to say I'd been there.
Ahhhh, if only trees could talk. The things they have seen and lived through. Fun stuff, Rick! You know my dad was a huge history buff. He was especially knowledgeable of Montana history. We always talked about doing a major history trip of Montana that included all the Lewis and Clark stops and ghost towns in the state. We never got to do that trip. Every time you post a video like this, I get more and more inspired to do the trip... just me. I think I will start planning.
: ) THANKS MUCH for sharing and taking us along! ! ! GREAT to ride and explore while you can, before Fall hits us. Anxious to see your 'new' ride, the classic Gold Wing : ) Safe riding and ALL the BEST ! ! Cheers : )
Very good show Rick! Thanks. We spent our camping season traveling around North Dakota this year. Didn’t make any real long trips. We plan to travel around Montana next year. You give us some great inspiration.
Looking for a Harley now Rick? FLH (king/queen seats), heel/toe shifter, highway pegs, helmet locks, saddle bag inserts (made to fit/pull out luggage). You'll love the running boards and multiple ways to relax your back/body on long trips. My husband FLHLT - me, FLH.
Thanks for the Ride along Rick . Yes, sometimes people push the envelope and follow a Garmin instead of using common sense! Oh well I guess.😬 Thanks for sharing your thoughts.
My phone GPS has tried to take me down farm roads off of the main highway but I stop and check my paper maps to get back on the main highway. That Honda Goldwing is the Cadillac of motorcycles. In my superbike racing days, all of my motorcycles were Honda.
Enjoyed this video because a few years ago the wife and I followed the 1804 hwy and took the virgelle ferry. The Carter. Ferry looks just like the one we rode. Keep up the good work.
Thank you for another vicarious adventure! Google Maps is just as bad for sending people down "roads" that are impassible or even non-existent... sending people across private property etc. The mapping software relies on county survey maps that are sometimes (often?) very outdated. This has gotten many people into difficult situations... It has almost gotten me a couple times. I usually research routes ahead of time and use the satellite view but even that does not always prevent problems. I had not been aware of the Yamaha TW200 until you purchased yours... Many years ago I had a Yamaha 175 Enduro 2-Stroke that I loved and rode many miles on... I still fondly remember the sound it made LOL "Ring ding ding ding"... I've had many motorcycles but that one was one of my favorites. LOL Now I'm looking at Yamaha TW200s... prices aren't too bad. Unfortunately the Missouri River is not navigable by boat from Montana to St. Louis... 6 dams along the way with no locks for boats... Yes a canoe is doable if you don't mind portaging for some distance. I was curious earlier this year and did some research... you'd have to go many hundreds of miles downstream to do the trip in any boat bigger than a canoe or kayak.... to Sioux City. There's also a "Canoe Camp" here locally in Orofino Idaho... it was Lewis and Clark's stop in the Nez Perce nation to resupply after crossing the mountains.

Omgosh omgosh!!! Thank you, brings back many memories of MT. The hotel in Ft Benton was restored by classmate of mine, in fact I played football with him. I remember his dad very well. Living in MT most of my life I never knew of the 3 ferrys. I hauled many loads of grain out of those towns in your vid. On my bucket list is to ride those 3 ferrys, and to visit the rocks east of Butte, I think called singing rock. When I was a boy, my folks and I would visit Ft Benton and they would tell me the story of Shep. Thank you again for the wonderful vid!!!!!
A friend of mine had gear tied to his seat like that and something came loose and got caught in the wheel. He died in the accident so be careful with straps etc and check regularly.
I am so thankful I found your channel! You and your dear wife are so enjoyable to watch. I lived in Lewistown, MO some years ago for a short while so loved the video to Fort Benton - loved my visit there too!
We really love Lewistown for it's quaint beauty. Did you know that it's about the only place in MT that gets tornadoes? Some that the wind funnels between the mountains there.
I just found you and subbed. I am 71 and trying to get back into camping and motorcycle riding.love your stories a d history tours.gotta binge watch now
Rick , please take plenty of time getting acclimated to the Gold Wing before taking off and encourage Linda to ride with you a lot before any big road trips. We dont want to lose you guys.
Looks like a fun trip. You see so much interesting stuff traveling through older towns. Bike did a good job. But really now, wouldn't you have had more fun being stuck in your driveway most of the summer changing head gaskets and working on other projects with your truck? Just kidding, Enjoyed the video much, take care, and safe travels south...
You don’t always get pie, but some times you do when you least expect it. The other day I was out mowing my acre of lawn (hopefully for the last time this year, nope it’s going to need it one or to more times)when i noticed that wild berry vine that have been threatening to cut out of the large noble fir on the property line was loaded with thumb size black berries. I drove over to the house and got my wife to come out and told her about the berries. To my surprise she came out and picked a whole bowl of berries, I helped a little. To my even bigger surprise when I came in from mowing there was a pie baking in the oven. We skipped lunch and had hot berry pie with a scoop of vanilla ice cream and coffee instead. 🥧 Not kidding the thought crossed my mind….‘I wonder what Rick’s have this afternoon?’. I’ve got to mow again in a couple days….i wonder if there’ll be pie 🤔
Rick, that bridge you shown in Fort Benton was a film location for the movie “Thunderbolt and Lightfoot” which was filmed in Great Falls and other spots. Jeff Bridges and Clint Eastwood sat under a tree in that park with the bridge in the background, talking about the next bank they were gonna rob. Great classic movie from the 70’s
That was fun! Though sleeping in a tent this time of year can be painful! And the stories about trusting Garmin or any other type of GPS is true!!! I have friends who live up the North Fork and people constantly try to plot in a course from Eureka to their place and always end up lost. And that's even when they are told not to do it cause it can't be trusted for that area. Crazy! That new Honda is going to be awesome! Can't wait to see you two enjoying it!!❤
Hi Rick.. thank you for sharing your trip with us! Very informative as usual! May I ask is it a Go Pro or Osmo Action you prefer? I trust your reviews and opinions! Thanks again in advance 👍
I really enjoy your videos, you mentioned sleeping in your clothes for added warmth. I learned years ago you'll actually stay warmer with just your underwear of have a set of dry clothes to sleep in. Your clothes collect moisture and oils from sweat so they will not be dry and will make you cold. I've camped for the last 60+ years in every kind of weather including extreme temps. Try it you'll be surprised. Thanks for you videos keep it up.
Rick, You should have tried Born to be Wild. Lol Enjoying the video. Montana roads are great for riding. I rode from Tennessee to Glacier several years ago. Ride safe and hope to see you and Linda in Quartzite in January.
Excellent video, thankyou! Took a van trip over through central Mt. a few years back, spent some time in Fort Benton checking it out due to reading about it in AB Guthries book " These Thousand Hills". Beautiful little town.
Thanks for the video, have fun. I'll be in Quartzsite, AZ this November for the winter. Camping, and going to the RTR with Bob Wells and the big tent show.
Where you filmed the Missouri river in Fort Benton with the grass and trees is where both 8th grades from Bonner school started our raft trip( in 1974) to the James Kipp campground you showed on another video..That grassy place was also shown in the 1973 film Thunderbolt and Lightfoot..Clint Eastwood and Jeff Bridges stood right there and had a movie scene there ...
Omgosh You are correct! A lot of the movie was filmed in GF. A teacher from my old high-school was in that movie, and I have a story about the cars that were in that movie. OMG!! The window of the car smashing thru, i believe was made of candy. Correct me if I'm wrong. Wow memories!!!!
That is sad about people getting stranded. It almost happened to us while we were in Idaho going from Salmon trying to get over to West Yellowstone quickly. Halfway down that valley heading to Idaho Falls our GPS pointed us off the highway and up a gravel road over the mountains (shorter). We got about a mile up that road and decided that it wasn't wise. Rule of thumb: Stay on paved roads! I love your 200cc Yamaha. I had a little 125cc Yamaha Enduro back when I was young and single. I loved that little bike for just zipping around locally and getting into jeep trails in Wisconsin. Maybe I will get the one you have!
You have more in common with us with each video. 😁 Our CTC is 90% complete. We've used it during the conversation. But January is retirement and we head West (from Michigan) with our street bike, Honde VTX1800.. Linda will love the comfort of the Gold Wing!! Have fun, ride safe, see ya down the road!
Great video. Randakk’s is an online source for GL parts and stuff. I’m first saw the Grand Union in derelict state, then we stayed there after restoration. I ride TW’s 2nd cousin XT.
Hey Rick, part of your route may be on the Montana Backcountry Discovery Route some day, It looks like they're in the process of making it. Even if its not, I plan on checking out the Fort Benton / Breaks area out someday. I've been wondering if those ferry's were still running, now I know!
Looking forward to crossing path with you down south again this year. Unfortunately Cindy's Alzheimer won't let her travel anymore. You and Linda be safe.
I remember that. And again at that café in Ajo. She really liked Linda! And you too. It will be hard leaving here but she's getting the help she needs and I will head to our family property near Bullhead City to help my sister. Her husband has Parkinson. It a bi**ch getting old.
I haven't had time lately to ride the Deer. It's going to feel a lot lonelier pretty soon because I'm getting another road bike. I'm going to look at a Harley today...
What is the tall brown grass? Where deer was. Also it is everywhere. I did notice combined wheat field, not that. Looks like same grass that California has. Here it would be Fescue. California it's not Fescue, but people I asked didn't know. We don't burn up either. Looks like Montana is fire waiting to happen.
Get the seat cover by seat concepts and your butt will love it. And get the rear rack from Cycle Rack. And if you want get a bigger tank by clark . I have a xt225 4.1 gallon on my bike instead of the 1.7 gallon tank.
Please tell me about your seat cushion. You two be careful on the Honda - I made decision years ago to avoid pavement on MC when I had 3 cars in one day pull out in front of me.
It's a stadium cushion with a corner tucked under the strap. The seat is pretty hard and uncomfortable without that; I will replace the seat with something more comfy later.
Nice ride. Some people are just stupid. Plan out a trip with paper maps first, then use the GPS. Don't have a paper map, use Google maps or something and print it out. Garmin has settings to stay on the main roads, paved roads, or allow any road. Learn to use your device. The same thing happened between Boise and northern Nevada a few years ago. A couple from Canada followed their GPS to his death in Nevada in the spring on a dirt road with snow still on the roads. He tried to hike out. Don't think they every found the man's body (coyote food?).
Rick, tyvvm for disobeying Linda this time &filming the journey. I absolutely love the scenery, even more,I absolutely am impressed by all the history you come up with about the places that you visit. Again, tyvvm.

I have that same sleeping bag.
Go back to the surplus store and get a wool blanket.

Hi Chuck. Turns out that it's actually a huge willow and the bark confused me because it looks like a cottonwood.

Montana, cool!
My phone GPS has tried to take me down farm roads off of the main highway but I stop and check my paper maps to get back on the main highway. That Honda Goldwing is the Cadillac of motorcycles. In my superbike racing days, all of my motorcycles were Honda.
Great trip, great video! Love that tree!
I enjoyed the road trip, and great little bike for your travels, a great state with lots of attractions to explore.

Unfortunately the Missouri River is not navigable by boat from Montana to St. Louis... 6 dams along the way with no locks for boats... Yes a canoe is doable if you don't mind portaging for some distance. There's also a "Canoe Camp" here locally in Orofino Idaho... it was Lewis and Clark's stop in the Nez Perce nation to resupply after crossing the mountains.
That's right about having to portage around the dams. I saw where one guy had put a wheel on one end of his canoe for the purpose.

Great video. Randakk’s is an online source for GL parts and stuff. I’m first saw the Grand Union in derelict state, then we stayed there after restoration. I ride TW’s 2nd cousin XT.
I love the Google Maps stuff. I see you came in on the 228 and you ended up on front Street.😊

Hey Rick, part of your route may be on the Montana Backcountry Discovery Route some day, It looks like they're in the process of making it. Even if its not, I plan on checking out the Fort Benton / Breaks area out someday. I've been wondering if those ferry's were still running, now I know!
The Montana BDR is a closely held secret until they finally release the map. I'm pretty excited about it and hope that it's ready by next year.
nice i think I'll do that ride from Sandpoint where I live. thanks
That'll be a great ride!
Looking forward to crossing path with you down south again this year. Unfortunately Cindy's Alzheimer won't let her travel anymore. You and Linda be safe.
Aw, sorry about Cindy not being able to travel anymore. Give her a hug from us both and hope to see you down south somewhere.
I remember that. And again at that café in Ajo. She really liked Linda! And you too. It will be hard leaving here but she's getting the help she needs and I will head to our family property near Bullhead City to help my sister. Her husband has Parkinson. It a bi**ch getting old.
Shep sounds like Hachiko of Shibuya, Japan.
Nothing like the love of a loyal dog.
how many miles to the gallon on the bike rick
I'm getting anywhere from 60 to 80mpg but that was with a tail wind.
Hi Rick, Nice motorcycle. Are you still riding your Deer E-Bike?
Have a great weekend and say hi to Linda for us 🤠
I haven't had time lately to ride the Deer. It's going to feel a lot lonelier pretty soon because I'm getting another road bike. I'm going to look at a Harley today...
@@gonagain FLH, Rick
Isnt the trans america trail all backroads?
I think it mostly is, but the trail is far from being connected from coast to coast so it involves a lot of highways still.
@@gonagain he is still mapping routes
What is the tall brown grass? Where deer was. Also it is everywhere. I did notice combined wheat field, not that. Looks like same grass that California has. Here it would be Fescue. California it's not Fescue, but people I asked didn't know. We don't burn up either. Looks like Montana is fire waiting to happen.
I'm not sure of the grass, but Montana has most of the original prairie grasses.
Camo duct tape will fix the sleeping bag bag right up!
Get the seat cover by seat concepts and your butt will love it. And get the rear rack from Cycle Rack. And if you want get a bigger tank by clark . I have a xt225 4.1 gallon on my bike instead of the 1.7 gallon tank.
That rear rack would help a lot and you saw that I was using an extra cushion. A new seat in on my list for sure.
Looks to be a willow tree.
Yes, I think you're right. Never seen one that big before!
I really need me some MT again and I was just there a month ago... This Winter I'm planning a trip up to spend Christmas in the snowy mountains!
Planning a white Christmas?
@@gonagain born and raised in the state of MI, I LOVE Winter! Let it Snow, let it Snow, let it SNOW ❄️
