This is a big help! Recently I found an 88 that needs a lot of body work but the frame and engine are in amazing condition so I doubt I will have to do all of this but regardless it helps to know what everything is before I open it up.
It bolts to the front of the motor and is driven by the belt like the accessories. I’m not sure exactly on the 2.9L becuase I’ve never had one with a smog pump. You may have a different motor. But on the 5.0L it is on the right front lower corner. Right front if you’re sitting in drivers seat that is. But I always delete them on all my junk.
Never took the rods out of the engine, but the pistons should have an arrow or some sort of marking pointing to the front of the motor when you put them in. The con rod caps will have a fractured bearing In them so they only fit on one way…

I have an 86 that I just purchased, but I have to figure out where the smog pump goes to get it in my name. Would love if you had any tips on that
