    First video of my Planted Under Gravel Filter tank so see where the tank and I have come from: • A Planted Tank with an...
    Watching a tank progress through the years can be fun to watch but sometimes we forget what the old tank set up looks like. So today I want to share with you all the progression of my 27 gallon Planted Under Gravel Filter Tank I prepare to take it down and set up a new, larger tank in its place.

      And that’s what I’m going with. Problem is the fish I am looking to keep together I know have never been kept together so it’s challenging to decide what style of tank to go with. CPDs, E.gilberti, rainbow shiners, and araza blue flash plecos. Will take the same water temps nuts comes from entirely different environments.

    Good morning, would love to possibly get a few of the gulf coast pygmy sunfish. I live in Kentucky also. Looking forward from hearing from you. Thanks

      Kentucky people will definitely be the first people to have a shot at them. I just haven't had the time recently to dedicate to them to try and spawn them. Finishing up an masters degree with a family will do that lol.

    Newbie here. If we use UGF then don't we need to clean the gravel by ourselves? What about the poop stuck in the filter plate? Does the poop stuck in filter plate gets used by plants?

      If you are referring to the celestial Pearl danios that are easy enough to come by at a pet store. If you are referring to the elassoma gilberti those are much harder to come by.

    Would you say the under gravel filter made a difference vs substrate on the bottom glass?

    • @TheAquariumLibrary
      @TheAquariumLibrary  Рік тому +1

      I 100% think there is a good difference to having an undergravel filter over having substrate on the glass.

    Do you plan on working with any more uncommon native species? Chologaster cornuta and Pteronotropis welaka would be right up your alley.

      I’d love to work with more native species. The problem I am running into is that I have simply run out of tanks at this time. The Pternotropis welaka would i would love to keep. Do you know of anyone keeping and breeding them in captivity?

      @@TheAquariumLibrary Zimmerman's fish used to have them. They're really hard to get since they're a "state protected species" in Florida now. So you'd need to acquire CB ones from someone in Florida, or from someone outside the state. You can collect them in Mississippi and Alabama--but I don't know where they're found there.

      @@samueljosephfernald4663 I forgot about Zimmermans. I’ll have to keep on eye out for them. And I saw that as I was looking for them. Looks like it is one of the other gulf states. I’d like to also try to find CB but the only place I think to look would be on the NANFA page.

      @@TheAquariumLibrary they pop up time to time. Breeding and husbandry are identical to rainbow shiners. Tray of marbles, some flow and raising the temp followed by a cool water change gets them to spawn. I had a breeding group about 8 years ago, gave them to another hobbyist when I moved. They’re the prettiest shiner IMO. I’ve kept rainbow, red, and bluenose shiners. Bluenose are my favorite, rainbow and red are tied for second. Reds are absolute terrors, though... proceed with caution. Worth reaching out to Brian Zimmerman to see if he has some laying around. He probably does.
      But seriously, look into Chologaster cornuta, too. They’re found alongside a lot of the shiner species down south. Super primitive fish, the only species of cave fish that isn’t blind, and doesn’t live in caves! Beautiful bold patterning; chocolate stripes, cream belly. They’re like little bichirs that are part kuhli loach. Males brood the young inside their gills. I got one spawn by accident out of mine, chucked them into my hillstream aquarium. They eat anything that sinks to the bottom. Great little tank cleaners. My last one aged out of my aquarium a couple years back. Lifespan is like 4 years for males, 4-7 for females. They’re the most underrated and uncommon native fish species to see in aquaria. I got mine off aquabid, you’re probably close enough to collect your own, though. I only suggest them to you because I think other aquarists deserve to experience them, and I know you’d end up falling in love with them like I did. There are literally no videos on UA-cam about them. With your growing platform, you could shine some light on a lot of the underrated gems that inhabit North America! Love your stuff, keep up the good work!

    I'm a huge fan, as well as proponent of undergravel filters but? While UGFs are great at creating a more natural aquatic environment, including a planted tank it isn't ideal for a *heavily planted modern aquascape* type of layout; especially if an active substrate (aquasoil) were the rooting medium.
    Plants that fare well in an aquarium with an UGF are the hardy types, especially heavy root feeders like crypts and Amazon swords that benefit from organic matter being pulled into the substrate where bacteria mineralizes it into plant-friendly nutrients. Thus, your algae bloom can largely be attributed to an excess of unused nutrient build-up. Had you kept that Amazon swordplant? It would've mopped up excess nutrients.
    Good stem plant species for a UGF-run tank? Hygrophila corymbosa 'kompakta', H. siamensis 53b, H. difformis, Ludwigia repens and Limnophila sessiliflora. They are all hardy and develope quite intricate root systems that, again will benefit from nutrient build-up in the substrate column. Other plants include floating water sprite, fliating riccia, Java fern & anubias. A UGF is a nitrate & phosphate factory. So, you'll need plants that are greedy feeders that help to balance out your aquatic system.

    • @TheAquariumLibrary
      @TheAquariumLibrary  2 роки тому +2

      See I have not found that to be the case when using an aquasoil, Fluval stratum. I have grown more of the heavily planted stems and they end up getting out competed and choked out by the pogostemon octupus that I have.
      And I don't necessarily agree with the nutrient build up side of things. I haven't sent my tank water out for sampling but with the low amount of food going in coupled with the many forgotten days of feeding them and no fertilization does not make me believe that I have a nutrient problem, but rather an imbalance in the some nutrient. Had I left the sword in there yes, maybe it would have, but it would have dominated this small of a tank and left little room for other plants.
      I plan in the next UGF build that is a larger tank to try and incorporate more greedy plants. Thank you for the suggestions.
