I have watched rules explanations oxf this game before and thought that this game would be a pass for me and my family. Watching it actually played has completely changed my mind! I have been looking for something like this for my family for a while now, cannot believe I wrote it off so quickly. I'll be picking it up soon!
Love this game, we played the Return of the Sinister Six expansion last night, 3 player mode. Thor landed a special ability 5 punch to knock over the final two villains and win the game with 2 Master Plan cards left. We were all cheering, riding out luck on the draw of that card. Great moment.
Would love a close-up of painted minis and Lincoln's basic tutorial on painting. I'm too scared to try to paint and seeing many people spend one day to paint one miniature is a bit intimidating.
Just bought the game for my son and I. Playing tomorrow night! so excited. it looks great! Please consider playing some of the expansions. would love to see some other villians!

I just got the xmen retail version, and after watching this I REALLY want to play! I'm also thinking about painting the minis with the Army Painter Speed Paints. I'm a complete newbie to painting.

You're probably no longer interested in the answer but in case someone someday is: they can still trigger the villain's ability that activates when you're required to add more to the location and are unable to. E.g. with Red Skull you advance his tracker for each thug/civilian you can't place.
This answer is 9 months late, and you probable know the answer by now. In case others want to know. When you get KO'd, your hear lays down. It cannot take damage or be KO'd again. When your turn comes back, your draw your initial 3 cards +1 for that turn (so 4 in total). Stand your hero back up, and proceed with your turn (play a card, and resolve actions).
Not super amazed from this game, but still loved the gameplay! Avengers assemble! Same as Aaron, don't "love" that art, it's just ok :) But that might be because of us being spoiled by Marvel Champions FFG art ... Question: Does every Hero has different icon distribution (of actions : punch, hero action, move, wild) or the difference is only in the Text Box Abilities of the cards for different Heros?
The characters do have different distributions of powers on the cards to try to emulate that character. There isn't a lot of room for subtlety but I feel the game does a good job giving you a feel for each character. Thanks for the note and for watching.-Lincoln
My thoughts on Xmen Marvel United: We played multiple games with different player counts, heroes and villains. Having played solo mode in games like Architects of the West Kingdom and Wingspan, it basically feels like 3 or 4 people playing solo mode against the game. Maybe it would have been better with a person controlling the villain even in a 3 pr 4 player game? I also felt the options in the game were pretty limited with only the 'heroic action', 'moving' and 'attacking' ... it got pretty repetitive. Characters should have had more individual actions based on their powers in the comics. Maybe I'm not crazy about co-op games? Maybe I just haven't tried the right one? Maybe we were missing something? My rating for XMU is a solid: *meh I think the game would massively be improved if there was a player vs. player(s) option and instead just leave the co-op as an option of play. I can't help but compare this game with the classic "Star Wars Epic Duals". What made that game so great is that everyone fought against everyone or you could play in teams, i.e. light vs dark good guys vs bad guys... or just all light side or even all dark side people fighting it out. Plus their decks were chock full of cards that had specific attacks based on the characters powers (although not always completely balanced). I won't be keeping this game, mine is up for sale =)
The base X-Men version DOES have a mode where one player controls the villain. Give that a try! Sucks that you didn't vibe with it, though. If you're still looking for a Marvel fix, could I recommend Marvel Champions? Each hero has their own unique deck (which you can modify) that is way more thematic to their superpowers.
The base game lists for $35 USD but can be had for less. If you want to buy more the prices add up for sure. I'm just crazy and went all in on both Kickstarters but it absolutely isn't necessary to enjoy the game. And you can get extra expansions as you go if you want to change things up. The expansions add some depth and challenge to the game. Unfortunately, they're crazy expensive and hard to get. You can play it on Tabletop Simulator for free, though.
The base game is very simple but the expansions do make it more complex and challenging. It's a fun game. That said, it's still incredibly overpriced for what it is. I play it on Tabletop Simulator but I think it's way too expensive to buy.

I think I missed some important info. After you complete the thug or civilan missions what point does thugs or civilans do?
