Literally not even joking. When Samurai Shodown 2019 got announced, I started freaking out cuz I completly forgot about Samurai at the time and recalled how much I played it at the dentist. No... That's the entire basis of Sam Sho, it reflects upon real-life combat between Feudal Japan, where one whiff can mean your life. That's why it's a really cool fighting game, for me.
Yup it does, that kind of how it was in the original games too. This fighting game is also really heavily footsie and neutral based too. Not a lot fancy combos and long string pressure mix-ups.
Thought should bring that game back, it mite actually do really well with today's technology and graphics. They could probably add in more weapons, characters, stages and moves. Bushido Blade had the right idea though, just at the wrong time frame since they were so limited on what they could program into the game.
7:16 Holy shit, that dude just got cut in half. This game definitely doesn't skimp on the samurai aesthetic. The Gore seems to be very samurai movie less mortal kombat.

Capcom couldn't get me off the Mortal Kombat arcade machines, Sam Sho hooked me the moment I saw it in action. I stopped playing Mortal Kombat as often, started throwing my money at Sam Sho in those days. When I finally got into KoF, it hooked me too, now I have all the 2D KoF's on the PS2 (mostly Japanese versions, including 02 UM and 98 UM). Fatal Fury didn't impress me until the second game, Garou MotW is awesome. World Heroes I'm alright with, though that one is not everyone's cup of tea. Now the Last Blade games on the other hand, I went out of my way to get the PS1 version of the first game and the PS2 Last Blade 1 and 2 compilation (gotten right after I got MotW on PS2), because they felt like a true predecessor to the Sam Sho games. Art of Fighting to this day, I am still lukewarm on, but nothing beats playing them on the old big screen setups the first two games got in my area, they were not on the traditional Neo Geo cabinets here. I literally thought about you when I saw the trailer this morning, I'm glad that you're pleased so far. I'm definitely going to try this game with my brother since both of us are new to SNK. 😊
It's nice seeing SNK get some love from the bigger youtubers in the FGC. Given the practices of the bigger devs (capcom/namco/NRS) and the way they have handled content and gameplay in their most recent installments, when you look at SNK, really from last gen onwards, they've really shown a good practice in how they've kept their games true to the core of what fans like me loved and focused on variety and core gameplay over microtransactions and gimmicks. Hopefully they get more traction here in the UK so the community can have a bit more variety and SNK can once again be a bigger part of the new generation of figthing game enthusiasts.
I always enjoyed the art style, character designs, and music of this series. So awesome to see the care and detail brought back, but enhanced. Plus SNK's heart is definitely beating within every frame.
It's looking good! One thing I don't entirely like about the visuals at this stage is that many of the characters' faces look a bit...friendly? Vaguely goofy and doll-like? The 2d Samurai Shodown fighters do have a cartoony, stylized look but strike me as having more grit about the faces, rather than big bright eyes and cleanly lit features. In 3d everything has to be defined whereas the 2d sprites of old leave more room for ambiguity and filling things in with the imagination. The developers could potentially add more grit to the characters by adding more shadows on the faces.
I must admit this game has a lot of appeal to me! I’m not good at remembering 86 input strings of combo... but I’m fairly good at outsmarting my opponent and have pretty decent reflex, so I think I’m gonna like this one! Thanks Max!!!

Was playing the original on Saturday and I don’t think I made it through a single match that didn’t have one round at least that timed out. It’s such a slow and methodical game and everything I’ve seen so far of this looks absolutely classic
Hey Max. Just letting you know, universal overheads, dodges, and throws being Push/Pull moves to combos all come from Samurai Shodown 3 (the latter were also broken as hell in Shodown 3, though so was just about everything else). Also, breaking Rage Gage -> One Hit death attack (known as Issen) is from SS4. It does more damage the less life you have when you use it. It also removes your Rage Gauge for the rest of the fight.
I'm super interested in the mechanics of this game. I've been a Smash player my whole life and could never get into traditional fighters. From your description so far, it sounds like this game has a few more mechanics in common with Smash than other 2D fighters. This could finally be my gateway into the world of traditional fighting games! I'm definitely grabbing this when it comes out. It actually looks super fun!
Way back in the day my dad's friend had biannual timeshare at a small little safari resort. I was around 8 years old. They had a MK2 cabinet and a Samurai Showdown cabinet. Every trip there would revolve around me playing on the cabinets. This story has literally no point but those are some powerful and fond memories.
I've never played Samurai showdown, and before FexL came out I've never heard of the Fighting layer characters. So this is looking like a great age for us newer fighting game players! I'm so happy I came across your channel about 4 years ago, and the content has only sky rocketed! Love you Max, keep up your fantastic work man. I appreciate your hard work to bring us the best content you possibly can! Shine On!!
I like the fact that it's less based on super fancy long combo strings and more based on reading your opponent and countering their actions. The main reason im not much of a MVC guy is because it focuses on those ridiculous combo strings far too much.
@@Soundaholic92 Yea that should be common knowledge by now, which is why I didn't bother to mention lol... Still tho, the fact that there's an Anime based on him, shows just how much his skill type carries him so far. 👍🏻
Thanks Max! I love these games and SNK and general, also so happy to see Shiki coming back (my NGBC main). I think if this game has a hype Evo, it will stick around for a while. It's the solid, footsie-based fundamental fighting experience everyone acts like they want, so it's time TO GET ON IT. Put up or shut up, because IT LOOKS GOOD TOO. I know I'll be there.
This game looks nuts! Can't wait until it comes out, because just the damage, designs, and animations all just look effing sick and it's all in this art style that just works so much better than their newer KoF games did.
@@almightygenius1763 Well in a sense it was... kind of...maybe not mainstream as SF or MK but it was probably one of those games that you and a group of your friends would get together and have a competition with I'm sure. At least that's what I used to do lol! But I get what you're saying it definitely wasn't as well known as SF or MK
@@brookswilliams5239 Its popularity did die down over the years since SNK just kept on making fighting games, but during the fighting game boom it really stood out amongst all the "Street Fighter clones."
Charlotte is back!!! Love it!! Nakoruru could see some use if her super is the same as it's been since SS3. Of course, if Haohmaru's still got the Tenha Fuujin-zan as his super (think: Ken's Shouryuu-reppa with a sword), that's definitely main worthy!! Shiki's back, too!? Sweet, now we just need Iroha & Mina Majikina to come back.
Eldarion It may not mention PC, but SNK confirmed that the PC port will release next year after the Switch port comes out during the fourth quarter of this year.
Fun Fact: The characters of Samurai Shodown are the ancestors of the characters from King of Fighters, much the same way that the characters of Soul Calibur are the ancestors of the people from Tekken.
Seeing this really makes me wish Bandai would redo a Weaponlord game. Also, nice to still see the fountains of blood going everywhere and people getting cut in half.
That they stuck true to classic Samurai Shodown is all I ever wanted. I am soooo glad it didn’t wind up getting turned into yet ANOTHER combo fighter in a very crowded combo fighter market. I’ve been waiting for this since SamSho 2, can’t wait for it.
Awesome!!! I spent a lot of quarters playing this in the 90s as well! This game is one of a kind and a classic of classics!! Can't wait until this game comes out! I really hope to see Gen-An in this one!! Yeeeaahhh!!! =)
My first SNK game was SNK Heroines: Tag Team Frenzy. It was also my first 2D fighter, as I mainly play Smash (the competitive way). I have been wanting to get into more traditional fighting games, but I am a bit intimidated. I was able to grasp SNK Heroines pretty easily, but I understand it is considered fairly simplified for traditional fighting game standards. I am really captured the aesthetic and style of the new Samurai Showdown, though, not to mention the history of its series. Would you recommend this title as accessible to a player like me?
Be ready for several key things 1) learning curve, 2) patience with oneself, 3)find your rhythm, 4) most of all fun Shodown is one of those games that is focused, engaging, and is definitely worth the wait
Awesome video Max. And speaking of Madam Charlotte our favorite blond French heroine and possible ancestor to King from the AOF/KOF games just had her gameplay trailer drop and from what I saw it looks like she plays kind of similar to usual but is a little faster. She has three of her trademark moves returning Shining Star the move where she slashes her opponent rapidly in the shape of a star, her Triangle Air Slash the move where she slashes the air in a triangle shape and launches it like a projectile, and of course her Rising Strike uppercut slash. The new finishing move/super move shown off has her pulling out a rose then throwing the rose into air stabbing her unlucky opponent multiple times ala Amy from Soul Calibur 4 and then finishing off the poor victim by making a lunging thrust that not only slices the rose in half while it's still in mid-air but is also accurate enough to stab the unlucky opponent in the heart and then she says Adieu and after saying Adieu her opponent falls down dead due to fatal rapier stab to the heart.
Story of my life... 47 years old, can't play worth a crap with the younger kids, find a new version of game he played as kid, learns it is a slower-paced high risk/high reward affair, get excited, look online... PC launch was ruined and noone plays it. Great.
I'm really liking this art style. Reminds me of SF4 but improved upon and made more stylish. I was worried at first but the more I see it, the more I like it. Welcome back Samsho
Funny you say it looks reminiscent of Street Fighter IV since the same former SNK employees who worked on SFIV back in 2009 came back to work for SNK on this game.
Man, I hope Shizumaru finds his way into the game. It so far looks like this game is gonna be back-to-basics, so it'll probably stick to the original lineup (I'd be surprised if Cham-Cham gets in), but Shizumaru is my boy. I hope he and his umbrella wind up in the roster.
Sounds good so far! Samurai Shodown is probably my favourite series from SNK. I was introduced to the game at a local game shop that has a Neo Geo (it's sort of like an arcade but it's just a small shop that only has home consoles which you can rent the spot to play at a dirt cheap hourly rate). I picked up Charlotte right away because she was so different than the other brutish or girlish characters that we were used to, such a refine and strong female character with really cool move sets. She's been my main ever since and I'm looking forward to making a comeback with her in the new game!
And that cinematic Super you're talking about doesn't require any bar whatsoever. Its just a one time thing that gets expended once it is used even if it whiffs. Its called Super Special Move, and the other super is called Weapon Flip Move or just Weapon flip which only works when you're in full Rage.
I'm very surprised the Rage Explosion was added from 4. The "BCD" insta kill slash looks great but the dial a combo doesn't seem included especially since in 4 you could link in Super to it and given the dmg already there would be stupid easy TOD combos. Wondering if Amakusa or Zankuro will be the boss this time around
I remember coming across the original Samurai Showdown at a quaint little pizza place in Washington (don't remember the name of the pizza place nor the town it was in) and just being captivated by it immediately. While we were waiting for our pizza my dad gave me and my brothers a couple quarters to try the game out and my captivation grew into adoration. Needless to say I'm extremely excited for this latest iteration of the series!
Now ask if Battousai the man slayer will star as a guest character! :D Seeing as Samsho 5's art direction was inspired by Samurai X / Rurouni Kenshin. 👌🏼
I picked up Samurai Showdown 2 back in the day on my snes and was instantly hooked. So cool to see this game is getting some love all these years later.
I'm an '09er who's never played a Samurai Showdown game before, but after watching this I'm itching to try it out. Thanks as always for the content and details Max 👍
OMG the nostalgia is flowing already. I kinda miss those days way back in 1996 during my elementary days. SamSho was always a part of our afternoon after school... :)
I remember playing Samurai Shodown back on the SNES and was surprised that I could play a guy...with a dog! Looking forward to seeing gameplay from all over on the new game.
@@brokentechnika783 That's not a fatality... But yes, whenever you deal a finishing blow with a certain attack, it will cut your opponent in two if the round you win happens to be your last. This is a feature in Samsho since the beginning.
Looks good so far hope it gets better as I could see this getting huge! Power Rangers battle for the Grid comes out tomorrow though so will be playing it as soon as it downloads.
Seems limited from what I've played so far but they are adding on to it so idk if anything it's $20 so it's not like it's a huge waste of money if your unhappy with it the boss fights get rough forceing you to play faster. Is not that bad but DBZ Fighters was better so far maybe I'll find something out that makes playing it more fun but so far kinda basic.
This takes me back to the SNK arcade machine in the laundry mat when i was a kid, i would play Samurai Showdown and Metal Slug until my Pops was done washing
The Gameplay you show here is much better than some other ones I have seen. Other gameplays suggested that the game had slowed down. But this suggests that is not the case. Can't wait...Thanks.
I can’t wait for the new Samurai Shodown love the series and very glad it is available for everyone and that it’s not exclusive! Thanks for the gameplay!! I also can’t wait for the Sam sho legacy looking forward to samurai shodown sen!! Slash! Victory!!⚔️
I love SNK for this: each of their fighting franchises has a specific feel and each of them is still mechanically sound enough to reward skill above all else.
I'm looking forward in this game, specially of fundamentals, and it's my first time looking to fighting games on different way, and I'm trying to be good at some of them: This, DBFZ, Street Fighter and Power Rangers too
Looking forward to this so much. Samsho was an absolute favorite of mine in the 90s and early 2000s. Even played Samurai Shodown RPG (Bushido Retsuden) for the Neo Geo CD. Just hoping we get Kazuki and Sogetsu in the DLC.

I just want to play as Wan Fu. I loved his stage and music
Was playing the original on Saturday and I don’t think I made it through a single match that didn’t have one round at least that timed out. It’s such a slow and methodical game and everything I’ve seen so far of this looks absolutely classic
This kind of neutral style is so cool man. It's the complete opposite of SFV and MK11, it's actually nice to watch
Idk why i'm so hyped about this game, i didn't even play old samsho that much back in the arcades days..
Feels great to have SNK making a comeback! Kof14, Geese in T7, and now we got Samurai Shodown heading to EVO, what more could we ask for!
The art design looks sweet.
Btw Samurai Showdown V Special still holds up. Until this release (hopefully) it’s the best in the series.
@@thehoonta5312 2 is the better game.
@@thehoonta5312 5 Special didn’t suck, it’s just not better than 4 or 2. It was actually really good
I've never played Samurai showdown, and before FexL came out I've never heard of the Fighting layer characters. So this is looking like a great age for us newer fighting game players! I'm so happy I came across your channel about 4 years ago, and the content has only sky rocketed! Love you Max, keep up your fantastic work man. I appreciate your hard work to bring us the best content you possibly can! Shine On!!
*The kid in me watching Haohmaru get cut in half by Genjuro at **7:21*
“Well, that was the fake Haohmaru because he was the wrong color.”
I like the fact that it's less based on super fancy long combo strings and more based on reading your opponent and countering their actions. The main reason im not much of a MVC guy is because it focuses on those ridiculous combo strings far too much.
Wasn't expecting Max to be a Jubei player. Now I'm looking forward to some mirror matches
Wasn't there an Anime based on that guy? It's no wonder his moves are GOOD! :D
@@gundum1o1 he's based on a real person lol
Never played samurai shodown before. This game looks interesting
Please play some vs CPU mode in MAME, and brace yourself for FIGHTCADE!
@@NegoClau Is this game combo focused like SF or something different?
@@Icanonlycountto4 this game is about footsies, defense mechanisms, high risk/ high reward and MASSIVE damage... like 3 hits might kill you...
Ok so it's more cerebral than about Button combinations
@@Icanonlycountto4 yes. Exactly.
This game looks nuts! Can't wait until it comes out, because just the damage, designs, and animations all just look effing sick and it's all in this art style that just works so much better than their newer KoF games did.
MK11, Power Rangers, Samurai Showdown! This is a great time to be into fighter genre
Agreed, I'm so hyped for MK 11 and curious to try Samurai Shodown. 😁
I'm new to the SNK franchise, never played one growing up.
Its great to see Samurai Shodown make its return in such a faithful way. I remember it being just as big as SF and MK. SNK stepped it up since KOF14.
This was never big as MK or SF. Lol
@@brookswilliams5239 Agree
can we get Sekiro as Guest character for Samurai Shodown?
Charlotte is back!!! Love it!! Nakoruru could see some use if her super is the same as it's been since SS3. Of course, if Haohmaru's still got the Tenha Fuujin-zan as his super (think: Ken's Shouryuu-reppa with a sword), that's definitely main worthy!!
Shiki's back, too!? Sweet, now we just need Iroha & Mina Majikina to come back.
I can not wait for this game, especially on PC. It animates so well, and Shiki being there is a nice inclusion.
The trailer doesn't mention PC
Eldarion It may not mention PC, but SNK confirmed that the PC port will release next year after the Switch port comes out during the fourth quarter of this year.
Fun Fact: The characters of Samurai Shodown are the ancestors of the characters from King of Fighters, much the same way that the characters of Soul Calibur are the ancestors of the people from Tekken.
Really?? I never knew that...pretty cool
Nope, only Hanzo may be an ancestor.
Guys Shiki is gonna be in this game!! So HYPE FOR IT!
I was hoping for her and Iroha but alas no Iroha, yet.
So hype for Shiki ! :,)
Shiki? As in Ryougi Shiki?
@@KittenChaos90 Nope. SamSho64 Shiki. Look her up.
@@MakotoTsuguri I just did. She looks cool. A Melty Blood guest would be really nice though.
Be ready for several key things 1) learning curve, 2) patience with oneself, 3)find your rhythm, 4) most of all fun
Shodown is one of those games that is focused, engaging, and is definitely worth the wait
@@kadosho02 Thank you for these tips!
@@andrealey5682 you're welcome 😊
Can't wait to see the Yokai Kusaregedo and my favorite Yoshitora
Yoshitora was confirmed by the hype trailer...
Story of my life... 47 years old, can't play worth a crap with the younger kids, find a new version of game he played as kid, learns it is a slower-paced high risk/high reward affair, get excited, look online... PC launch was ruined and noone plays it. Great.
This game looks amazing! I really really want to get hands on it!
@@E24KLawson oooo I didn't know that! xD thanks for the lore ^w^/
I'm so in love with the animation and character design. I hope they use this technology and turn it into an rpg or something.
I want to see Seiger in this game. Him and Nicotine are both underrated.
this game has a special place in my heart since i only got to play it in arcades and rich people who had a new geo , cant wait when it drops .
I wish they would have added the screen scaling outward when the distance between the character's increased.
I think they will.
Oh that high/low mix-up with Galford (Dog Drop plus Rushing low-sweep) at the very end looks sick.
I seriously hope they decide to add Baiken from Guilty Gear as a guest character in this game...
Nah, mushashi from mushashi from last blade would fit more.
Nah, Baiken for sure
Afro samurai would be my idea for a guest character
Afro samurai would be my idea for a guest character
Yakomen is my choice
Sounds good so far! Samurai Shodown is probably my favourite series from SNK. I was introduced to the game at a local game shop that has a Neo Geo (it's sort of like an arcade but it's just a small shop that only has home consoles which you can rent the spot to play at a dirt cheap hourly rate).
I picked up Charlotte right away because she was so different than the other brutish or girlish characters that we were used to, such a refine and strong female character with really cool move sets. She's been my main ever since and I'm looking forward to making a comeback with her in the new game!
Another game I look forward to.
Dude! Samurai Shodown will be so much fun to watch with all this ground fight and defensive playstyle
Sam Sho looking really stylish. Love all the classic Samurai touches and the music.
Old "skin" of genjuro is most beatiful. I love samurais. Hug from brazil
Samurai Showdown is looking great. I hope they bring back Last Blade though.
Same!
Seeing as Samsho 5's art direction was inspired by Samurai X / Rurouni Kenshin. 👌🏼
I picked up Samurai Showdown 2 back in the day on my snes and was instantly hooked. So cool to see this game is getting some love all these years later.
Combo focused fighters are nice but sometimes i just wanna play a footsie more slow paced game, hope it has good onlinr
If they ever make demo i think u should tell them.if netcode terrible maybe they try to fix it
I'm from the future and goddamn do I have some disappointing news for you
Thanks for putting this up Max! Absolutely could not wait till Pax East to see this. Great vid!
the supers are called MAX Desperation, Max.
I'm an '09er who's never played a Samurai Showdown game before, but after watching this I'm itching to try it out.
Thanks as always for the content and details Max 👍
Screw Mortal Kombat, this is what I've been looking for.
OMG the nostalgia is flowing already. I kinda miss those days way back in 1996 during my elementary days. SamSho was always a part of our afternoon after school... :)
after watch this now i`m hyped about KOF15 XD
I remember playing Samurai Shodown back on the SNES and was surprised that I could play a guy...with a dog! Looking forward to seeing gameplay from all over on the new game.
will this game have fatalities like samurai showdown 5,because those are pretty insane
The ign gameplay has a character that gets cut in half at the end. Is that what you meant?( I never played Samsho)
@@brokentechnika783 That's not a fatality... But yes, whenever you deal a finishing blow with a certain attack, it will cut your opponent in two if the round you win happens to be your last. This is a feature in Samsho since the beginning.
no,I mean some other style, you can look up for some, not that gory, but had some impresssive Japanese style
I used to be all over samurai showdown 1 and 2 in the arcade days! I hope it lives up to my own expectations
Looks good so far hope it gets better as I could see this getting huge! Power Rangers battle for the Grid comes out tomorrow though so will be playing it as soon as it downloads.
Enjoy man, as a NA PS4 owner I have to wait till next week :,(
Seems limited from what I've played so far but they are adding on to it so idk if anything it's $20 so it's not like it's a huge waste of money if your unhappy with it the boss fights get rough forceing you to play faster.
This game looks better than mk11 tbh.
The Gameplay you show here is much better than some other ones I have seen. Other gameplays suggested that the game had slowed down. But this suggests that is not the case. Can't wait...Thanks.
Oh yes, this game looks promissing. Can't wait to play Charlotte.
She looks AMAZING!!
@@adg1390 Yes, she does.
SNK is the master of Background Stage. They are always awesome in fighting game and making it's background.
Look my bro jubei is in. Now all i want is musashi,,shiki and rihoa.
Shiki's been confirmed, you'll see her in the PAX East 2019 trailer.
