Wallace, Idaho - This Whole Town Would Have Been Lost to a Freeway

  • Let the controversy begin. Wallace dates back to around 1884 when its namesake Colonel William R. Wallace purchased 80 acres of land to build his home. It is believed that he made the purchase with Sioux Scrip, which was later deemed to be an invalid form of currency. Disputes continued while the town gained steam and began to flourish due to the silver in this valley.
The town nearly completely burned down in 1890, but the townsfolk rebuilt, this time using masonry, brick and stone. Most of those buildings are still standing today.
One of the more decorated stories about Wallace is the hero Ed Pulaski, who saved 40 firefighters by blocking them inside an old mine adit.
Since 1884 this beautiful town’s mining district has produced 1.2 billion ounces of silver. That number continues to increase as mining is still very prevalent to this day. Cementing its place as the Worlds largest silver producer!
It has also played significant roles in history.
Including being in the mix for the major mining labour disputes in the 1890s turned deadly and left some scars that unfortunately will never heal.
The largest forest fire in American History occurred in 1910 which Pulaski made his mark and constituted the U.S. Forestry Service and Fire Fighting Agencies.
The entire town has been placed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1979. Thanks to the work of Harry F. Magnussen. It is one of only two entire towns to have this distinction.

There were things like Tug of War, Horseshoes, golfing and other things you could win prizes for. After dark they had the fireworks shot across the road from the Furnace Creek Ranch, and I sat on the stone wall in front of the resort and watched it with my husband. We always keep an open mind. Like the Loch Ness Monster, UFO's and of course Big Foot. Things are being discovered all the time. Kinda want them never to catch these legends. Humans just seem to want to put them in a zoo, hunt them or experiment on them. We like the mystery, although it would be really cool to catch one on camera - from a safe distance of course.

So far I my life time I have seen two UFOs.
      1) look like a very bright ball of light made no sound. It was traveling east to west. Very little cloud cover. When it did go behind a cloud it lite it up like a lamp shade.
      2) it occurred during night time over my Apartment complex. I decided to look up and I saw no clouds or stars. I was confused; The possible storm at night. Then I saw lights in a line multi color. Then I saw the outline. It was a shape of a Large Triangle. It was flying a couple feet above my two story Apartment complex. No noise moving slowly. Wallace was notorious for legal prostitution well into the 70s or 80s. I grew up in Missoula, MT and guys would go to Wallace to lose their virginity … they would say they were going to buy Coors Beer but …. I had my first legal beer there because the legal drinking age was 20 at the time. Lots to explore in Northern Idaho. Enjoy!

That is funny and so true. The Oasis which is now a museum was closed at the time of our visit. It would have been interesting to see inside. The legal drinking age in the UK is 18 and driving is 17. So different. So far we love Idaho. Beautiful scenery and beautiful people.

The whole town really does make you feel that way, Cindy. Absolutely loved our visit and will definitely be back. There is so much to see in that area.
