A tremendous amount of work went into documenting this area. You should be commended for your efforts. Your soft, smooth voice is calming and is well suited for narration. Your video shots are logical and sequential. I love the way you mix current video with historic stills and vintage video. The video stream flows so well.
I am glad I subscribed to your channel since you always amaze me. Each one of your new video sets the bar higher and the wonderful sound track complements your work. You are a great story teller.
I need to explore this area this coming summer. The area has such a startling contrast to what it was during the mining heydays. A person can not appreciate the past until you compare it with the present.
Many thanks again for posting this informative, educational and historical video. I will try to meet up with you this summer. Dave in Montana.

Thank you for your kind words. I have been been directly inspired by your presentations as I have tried to use more still shots (less pan and zoom) because of the look of your video using photographs. I still tend to go a little crazy and do to much movement but I am trying to settle down. I hope to get into western Montana (I'm only 13 miles from Montana border on I-90) and do some video. Perhaps someday we will run into each other. Take care and keep your videos coming!

So great that you posted this (these) no matter how….less than perfect you seem to be saying it is. I’m from New York City and I travel, but the’s no chance I’m going to see this place or learn about it. You help peopke visit places without visiting them.

We went to Burke a few years ago and took a few pictures and videos wondering how it used to be like. Asked a couple of the people who live there and got some interesting information. I thank you for filling in the gaps I was missing. Truly a great place to see for yourself.

I really enjoyed the trip up the Canyon. Been there many times over the years. My dad was born and raised in Gem/Mace from 1927-1954. Lost his eye in the Star mine. My grandmother's house where she raised the family still stands, right next to the creek in Gem. I have listened to many stories of life there and I enjoy exporing the history of the area. Thank you.

In 1955 a new foot ball/ base ball field was built in Silverton - but there did not build bleachers - A large group students and teachers from Wallace H.S.went with some "low boy" trucks and drivers from Zinetti Trucking to the ball field in Burke - we stacked those bleachers like chairs a rored through Burke horns blaring as we stole those bleacher for the new field. in 1951 I worked one summer at the Star...I was in the Winze where the Shifter was Mandy Lundell and the timberman was Big Louie Hockstater. We were between 49-5100. I lived in the Tiger Hotel next door to Edward Joseph "Bud" Riley. I was with a group of students from Mich Tech who were offered jobs for summer money. There was a shaft shaft sinking project at that time to 6300. The food in the Tiger was tremendous. It was run by Bill Vipperman and his wife. $90/mo board and room. It was a great summer and Bud Riley met his wife Mary who was from Mullan, but worked in the Coeur D Lane hardware. She would loan us a quarter each to take the Guy Gillerie cannon ball bus up the canyon to Burke. I visited Burke in 1996 or so and the Tiger Hotel was gone and the town was a ghost town. I remember a bunch of old characters such as a timber repair man named "Little Tommy" Immiganan and his partner Alligator. They were trapped by a cave in and spent several days while miners dug them out.
We used black powder fuses and caps and cut the fuses to the right length to pull the middle of the 11" holes and then shoot down the top and then use lifters to get the ore in the stope away from the wall where the slusher could be used to drag the ore to a rock chute that we carried with us. Bud Riley's friend from the U of Idaho married Messerly's daughter that summer. Messerly was the superintendent who was often mentioned in a tale of how he climbed up a rock raise that was blocked and jammed and set and lit a charge of dynamite to loosen it up.
I see the name Mc Loed on the credits. Is this fellow any relation to Norman Macleod who was a great friend of Noah Kellogg's and played the part of Kellogg in festivals In the 50's. Norman was from Northern Michigan and was a shirt tale relative who took me on a tour of Kellogg and the area including the smelter during my time in Burke n 1951.
    .

GREAT VIDEO!! Thanks so much. I am from the Kellogg area. My folks owned the old Brandon's Store in Enaville next to the Snakepit. That whole enaville area is rich in history also, especially logging and was settled by the early Finish immigrants. Would really love to see you do a video history of that area. 3 of the major saw mills were right there that milled for the mines, Kellogg Transfer right behind the Snakepit. Bear Creek mill in Bear Creek just in back of the Snakepit but on Bear Creek road a mile up. And Linfor Lumber Company on the west side of the north fork river. If you see the movie Dante's Peak, it was filmed in enaville (and Wallace). That bridge that gets destroyed at the end is called THE SILVER BRIDGE where you drive over the north fork river to get in the west side river road and Linfor Mill. Albert's bar is on the other side a historic spot of its own. All these mills are now gone unfortunately. But tons of history there. I have a lot of research material for the area. From Kingston off ramp on I90 all the way up the north fork river road to Mullan and Pritchard, both sides of the river, all the gulches and canyons have history. That area of the silver valley is/was the heart of the timber industry in north Idaho from the founding of the area and it's silver mines until the early 80's. The mining history is Bunker Hill to the Sunshine to Burke canyon and everything else in between. The Timber history is the North Fork of the CDA river from Cataldo to Kingston and all the way up the north fork. Do the timber history next!! Love how you have done the mining history.

Thank you for all your effort. I'm an amateur genealogist and was researching the places that one of my Great granduncles had disappeared to many years ago. I don't know his story, or why he left "home" in Iowa, but the only mention of him in the local paper was "Joe Coyle received the sad intelligence last Tuesday of the death of his brother Charles at Butte, Montana, earlier that day. He dropped over dead while at his work, information from that city revealed. He was last here twenty-nine years ago. He was born April 7, 1880 at Dumont. He went West with a railroad surveying crew, and has lived in Western states since. He was sixty-one years old."
During my searches I found him on the 1920 US Census for Burke, ID employed as (you might guess) a miner. Over the years he worked in Spokane, Burke and Butte as a miner. Your video helps so much to place some historical context around how he lived out his years.
Oddly, after having spent most of my life in California, I ended up a few hours northeast (in Kalispell) and will stop by on my next trip further west. Thanks!

I know you Mary. Your dad was the cop boss in Kellogg for years. I was the guitar player in a local band called the Hot Ded Chickenz in the Kellogg area in the early 80's. We played in Wanda's in up town Kellogg at times. Across the street was the old Johny's bar that was closed down. The other guitar player in the band, Don Folkman got a rental agreement which became our rehearsal place and when we were home and playing in town, after Wanda's and the sunshine Innand dirty earnies ould close at 2:00, many would come to our place at Johny's for after hours partys. Cops didn't care for that (or us for that matter). And I believe you were in the night your dad and a few deputies raided the place. We clicked off the lights and tried to be quiet but everyone was blasted and laughing so hard they knew we were all in there and busted in. No warrent. But your pols saw me a few days later in IGA parking lot and said he didn't want to see his daughter anywhere around my band again. I knew right then why we were raided THAT night. Laughable stuff now. Good to see your still around Mary. Many I know from those days (sadly) are not.
