This video shows a promo video of Volvo Cars where a reconstruction is being made of a frontal crash between 2 cars, in this case a 2008 Volvo V70 and a Volvo V70 Classic (it's not a 850). First you'll see a simulation of the frontal crash and then the real crash is being reconstructed. The test is done at the Volvo Safety test center in Torslanda (Sweden). It's been about two years since my 2000 V70 since saved my life in a front offset collision (like this but with much less overlap) on an interstate highway. Yes, the A-pillar was bent and my right leg got mangled and they needed a machine to get the door open, but hey, both cars were traveling at 70 mph. Up until a few years ago, not many cars would have done nearly as well.
And both drivers got out, swept up the mess, closed the hoods and drove home!

In fact, this is a reconstruction of a real accident that happened in gothenburg, where an old and a new V70 collided. The idea was to investigate how well the results from a real crash could be repeated in the test laboratory, and the test gave about the same results as the real crash did. So, the speed of the cars is the same that they had when the accident happened.
Partly because of this video I ended up buying a V70 P2, decided it was pretty much the safest thing I could afford to carry my young son in.

I thought it was the angled design of the old 850/V70's A-pillar that did the damage, not only was it not that since the simulation shows the curved early V70 bending as well, but they didn't show the driver's side of the new V70! We only saw the side not affected by the crash! Perhaps it bent safely as well.
That all being said, Volvos are clearly very good in crashes and we must thank them for it. I know I do.
Indeed the Scandinavians really know how to do safety, even Saab have a good reputation in that area. There is a dash cam clip on UA-cam of I believe a white S80 being side swiped by a HGV here in the UK, it flips over with some force and proceeds to slide across the motorway at 50mph+ upside down. The passengers, including a young baby came away unscathed, a testement to just how good Volvos are in an accident.

***** Considering that safety design is actually from the 850, that is almost 20 years older than the newer V70 model they used. Take any other car (other than a Volvo obviously) the same age as the 1st generation V70 and do that exact crash. The engine will come off and the cabin will be demolished. Safety doesn't determine if the engine isn't there after a bad crash. Safety is the cabin...where you are. The cabin was not demolished. I suggest you research all aspects of this. So, indeed the 1st generation V70 did hold up well. There is a reason why Volvo has the name of being the safest car company. Good day.

Well, that's simple. The Volvo will obviously win. Before Ford bought Volvo, Volvo was the safest car company. In the years of Ford ownership, they got knocked down to second safest. Since Geely has purchased Volvo, Volvo has taken the title of being the safest car company again. Mercedes was never near Volvo's safety in reality crashes, though Mercedes, and all other Euro cars do better than Asian and American companies.

Yay go the V 70s. I have a 98 model and am impressed at how they withstand the impact nearly if not as good as the modern v 70
I have owned a Volvo V70 for the last three years. It is an amazing car - big, roomy, powerful, safe and comfortable. One criticism - it gets through headlight bulbs very quickly. I can live with that..
That would seem like a problem with the bulbs and not the car. Have you had the voltage of your electrical system measured? Have you tried other brands of bulbs? Oh, and you have a halogen system right (as opposed to HID)?
Try replacing the bulbs in pairs. I had the same problem with the light bulbs from my Mitsubishi Colt. I had problems with one, replaced it, then after 1 month the other. I replaced it too and after 2 months, the other one. Until I thought to replace both at the same time. Almost two years passed and until now, I didn't have any problems.

Also try not to touch the bulbs with your bare hands. The oil from your fingers will cause the surface to dissipate unevenly, shortening its life by quite a bit.
Get them switched off with the Vida tool.

the Computer Animation shows two second generation V70s crashing, but in the actual test its a first gen to a third.

When you consider than V70 Classic is a rebadged Volvo 850 from 1991, it seems to have done well.

+Azureecosse U forgot something, if u advancing to S70 crashtest from 1998 u must accept this, the structure is same as on 850, made in 1992. Actually S40 crashtest what was done in 1997 was pretty good, and still was build in 1995. Actually in this years wasnt better cars trough safety, maybe ford taurus which was pretty good on frontal, but actually in world exsist much more crashes next to frontal. The side protection on S70 based on 1992 structure is nearly comparable with today cheap cars. If u see small overlap crashes, no one brand actually doing tests on this when it comes except volvo, which has been doing this test for 30 years.

Some structural parts are clearly marked so it's easy to see how they move back in case of a frontal crash.

its a reconstruction, the test i based on a real life crash. this way volvo can get better views and develop a deeper understanding of how their cars behave in a real world collision situation.
Im not an expert but thats a hard nock and i can see many other cars blistering apart . One looks prety good considering the a hell of a shot.
Looks like the older V was sent in at a slight angle to exaggerate the forces that it would face. With the new V's full frontal area accepting the corner of the old one, it will fare better due to more area to dissapate crash energy.
Helps to dramatize the advances in design that the newer models feature. The camera never captured the other side of the new V that absorbed higher forces.
It's reconstruction of real situation with all parameters same as in that collision (angle, speed, models...).

One can not determine which car is the best from this footage. The after footage is taken from different sides of the cars. The top footage could have said something if it was shown in slow motion but it isn't. Some data on acceleration would be helpful.
The bang of impact is like a gunshot, but far more horrible as you can't see a bullet but seeing two cars slam into each other in a millisecond is sickening!

I had a V70 1998, I crushed with 50km/h a Peugeout oldtimer. Half of the Peugeout was not there whereas only the plastic frame holder of the number plate of mine was minorly broken.

The two cars aren't equal in weight (mass), so they need to be going at different speeds in order to have equal momentum. If the speeds were equal, the cars would carry on in the direction of the heavier car after the crash; making it hard to get that great under-car footage.
How much are car manufacturers using computer simulations to supplement their crash testing?

Both look equally safe in this test. It confuses me because the 1997-2000 s70/v70 got 3 stars in the frontal offset 64 km/h crash test.
This was not a 64km/h 40% offset test. Volvo didn't want to show the old car in a bad light. Therefore they did a 62 km/h 80% offset test. Also the cars were angled so that the drivers side of the old V70 took a smaller force.

except that the crumple zone sucks. You can see that the cabin of the old V70 starts to crumple. Not where you would want to be in a wreck.
How different is the 850 from the mk1 V70?
Different grille, different powertrain, and many more things, the V70 Classic compared to the 850 had around 1400 improvements apparently.

In fairness just about the only rover estate from that time would be a 75 Tourer and they were 4 star EuroNcap as well. I would agree that a 600 (similar launch date to the p80 cars) likely wouldn't do as well.* Managing only 2 stars compared to the S70 (only p80 car tested by Euro Ncap) with 4 stars, albeit scraped by only one point.
*to Rover's credit they actually paid for their cars to be tested. Ever wonder why the Metro was tested but the 205 wasn't despite being of a similar vintage, and built in larger numbers?

The new v70 drives 58 km/h while the old v70 drives 62 km/h (they say so in swedish). Why? Probably because the difference would be to small at the same speed...
But it's all for a good cause. These crash tests enable Volvo to build safe cars and save lives.

I am very curious about why the two cars aren't made to travel at the same speed: the older one is doing 62 km/h and the newer one 58! Could that for instance make the newer one look more safe than the older one than it actually is??
The mass of the newer one is probably higher than the old one, so for the both cars to cancel out each other they need to travel at different speeds. If the newer car would have been traveling at 62, the old car would have been knocked rolling backwards. Simple physics, mass+velocity=force.
at the end of the day both speeds add up and thats how much force is in the impact.... i think?

this was made to recreate a real live scenario, somewhere in Sweden this happen whit real people and Volvo bought the cars to study them and then recreated it whit real cars to compare the real live against lab test...
so the speed difference is probably to recreate the real live scenario...

That simulation probably cost 10s of thousands of dollars, and had to be calculated on a super computer and took hours if not days to render, however you can get beamNG.drive and it runs on good computers today with little issue

What a biased material. Anyone noticed that the cars are not overlapping completely, and they're only showing the more demolished side of the old one, and on the new one, the side which was less destroyed ? On the bottom view you can see how far the other front wheel on the new V70 was pushed back. And why crashing them on such a weird angle ?
If they used a 960 I would be interested, since it crumpled up when it hit a Renault Modus at Fifth Gear.
That's because there wasn't a engine in that 940.

They crashed the new V70 into 850, which isn't that old at all (mid/early-90s).
SIMcityplayer2002 v70 classic isn't 850 first v70 classic came rear 2000 i think then the second generation of V70 came.
V70 "classic" was produced from 1998 to 2000.
The 98 to 00 V70 chassis is the same as the 93 to 97 850. Its the P80 Platform.

The first gen. V70 is so close to being an 850 but yet still it isn't. It's really the replacement for the 850 with a few changes here and there
