This video will show you how to change out a typical circular saw blade. You'll also learn how to determine when it is actually time for a circular saw blade change, rather than relying on the saw blade's appearance (which can be misleading).
Tool List:
--Circular saw (mine is a 7-1/4" Makita)
--7-1/4" blade (Diablo)
--13 mm wrench (supplied by manufacturer)
Steps:
1. Unplug the circular saw!
2. Trigger circular saw brake mechanism (by pressing the small tab, usually located near the blade guard and in line with the arbor)
3. Set wrench on arbor bolt
4. Pull counter-clockwise
5. Loosen and remove bolt and washer
6. Remove circular saw blade
7. Insert new circular saw blade, with teeth pointing up at front
8. Reattach washer and bolt with wrench (clockwise)
Always be careful when changing circular saw blades! The carbide teeth on new circular saw blades can be fairly sharp--consider wearing gloves when handling.
In general, you'll know it's about time for a new circular saw blade when you can hear the saw's motor bogging down in cuts. Also, wood will splinter worse than usual as the circular saw blade passes through the material.

My dad made furnature when I was little and my mom made many things in my house when I was young, but now I just got out of college and want to make my own stuff so I dont have to buy it. My mom has passed and I dont have contact with my dad, so this was so helpful since I was too young to use the saw when I was around them. Thank you!
wear eye protection
Way to go girl!!👍
that's great that you can do that!
Little curious to see if youve done well making your furniture since 2 years ago
Daddy abandonment issues. Watch out for trolls. Oh wait that’s me oops
Im 69 years old. Husband just passed now i need to learn on My own! Thank you. I duled the blade cutting concrete backer board. Thank u love you all!
Wear a mask and be careful cutting that stuff with a wood blade
Before watching your video, I felt like an idiot because I knew there had to be some way to change the blade. Now I can change it and feel safe that I did correctly. Thank you for these easy to follow instructions.
Eduardo Corrochio You’re welcome, thanks for watching! It was a total mystery to me until I watched somebody do it years back. That’s the way a lot of construction goes 🙂
Thank you. I had “loaned” my saw to my son in law. When it returned the blade was burnt. It had been so long I forgot about the blade lock. UA-cam how to and your video did the trick. Again Thank You!
*This is my second DeWalt circular saw **MyBest.Tools** I sold my 18 volt and use the money to help purchase this 20 volt. Money well spend. I liked that it came with a blade as well.*
AWESOME!! I just changed my first blade! Your video was quick, easy and strait to the point without a lot of yaking!! It also helped that my husband actually had the tool right with the saw. That's a first!!
That’s great to hear!
Im in an apprenticeship and i have to get approval from my teacher to use the circular saw, this was a lifesaver for my circular saw exam
Tysm
That’s great to hear! We need more apprentices. Good luck with the training, and work safe! 😄👍
Great video, another guy titled his video how to change the blade etc but all he showed was how to loosen the screw, he didnt even take the screw or the blade off. Thank you. 🙏
Thank you! I always try to show the whole process as often as possible 😄
Never had to change a blade on a circular saw before, any time I used one it was always someone else's. Started to do reno's on my house today and I was struggling to figure out why the bolt kept spinning and not loosening. Glad to see it's as simple as a locking mechanism behind the blade! I feel like a doof now.
Thanks for the helpful video :)
The worst for me is changing a table saw blade without a lock
I'm a total newbie and this prevented me from wasting an ENTIRE day. Thank you
I bought my first circular saw brand new and it was time to put the blade in. I couldn't get the bolt to come loose. I thought no was doing it wrong. That's why I came to look at the video. I eventually took it to the shop and they loosen it up for me. Even they were surprised to find how tight it was. Anyways thank you for sharing your knowledge. I just wanted to share this story with you all. Cause I am very fond of wood working and this is my first attempt into woodworking
New Makita saws use a reverse bolt. Left to tighten, right to loosen. You were probably trying to continue to tighten.
So helpful.
I bought my circular cutter a year ago but have never used. Today in the morning I needed to fix a furniture but was stranded on how to insert the blade.
From Kenya.
I’m glad it helped Robert! Happy to hear from Kenya! 🇰🇪 🙂
Life saver!!!!!! Seriously, lots of videos out there but you're the only one that tells you that you'll hear a click...
Thank you! I just got a Hyper Tough saw & I don't have any real experience with power tools. This helped me change my saw blade. One tip for others: that spindle lock is tough to press down & keep in place while loosening the other side - until you're comfortable with it, best to make changing blades a two person job (esp if you're not a carpenter). The Hyper Tough saw blade likes to be rotated clockwise before loosening, until it catches.
Thanks Michelle! You’re right, you really have to wedge your hand behind the guard on most circ saw models. It can help to set the saw on something waist-height and brace it with your hip so you can pull back a bit. Just make sure it’s unplugged first 😅 Good luck with the new saw, and be safe!
You tube is the best thing on earth. I was becoming crazy. Thank you you tube and this man. And God too. I did with my Hercules circle saw.
Spindle locks are great but not included on all tools. Maybe a newer, revised video on saws without spindle locks and how to do a blade change could help a lot of people out!
Before watching this video I had traveled all around the world asking the most brilliant carpenters and woodworkers how to change a blade. None of them described it as well as this video. My journey around the world continues, and is my days pass I am often reminded of this, how to change a blade video. The sun setting on the horizon, frogs splashing in the fake pond next to the mall where I write this, takes me back to the times I chase the dragon deep into the well.
Thanks! My 5 1/2" blade radial saw has less clearance than the 7 1/4" radial saw in your video. I thought I was doing something wrong because I couldn't get the blade to go straight in. After watching your video it became clear that I had the right idea, but some very gentle maneuvering was required to maneuver the blade up and across the bolt housing. After that, it slid into place. Thanks for the video!
Just bought my first saw and was so confused as how to change it. Thank you soooo much. 🤩
thankyou, as a hand tool woodworker this was very useful for me, I need to cut up some MDF sheets.
Thank you it had been many years I and could not remember the tab!
Nice video and thanks for sharing! It would have helped if you would have mentioned about what to do with older circular saws (like mine) that do NOT have that locking button to make the blade not spin when trying to change it. (I have to use a piece of lumber touching the old blade teeth so the blade will not spin when I try to remove it and when I install the new blade.)
Thanks for The Tutorial, I've been wanting to try a Metal Cutting Blade on my Circular Saw for a long time.
thank you sir,,, you made it simple!!
God 🙏 bless you!!
Excellent instructions. You make it look so easy. What happened to my small tool to remove screw? 😮
Just what I needed. Thanks dude!
I'm just here because I'm too lazy to whip out my manual :)
Also, thank you sir.
This is so timely for me. Thank you!
THANK YOU! took me literally 1 minute
Do you have a video on how to select a new blade? I need a new blade for my table saw (I think), and the options are overwhelming. I was googling this and then I thought, "I wonder if the Honest Carpenter has a video on this?" :)
I actually made a note to do that video the other day, Leslie! Coming soon 🙂
@@TheHonestCarpenter Oh, awesome! The choices are just overwhelming.
thank you sir for the tutorial.i learned now how to replace my circular saw blade
Wonderful video. I was able to follow and change the blade.
thank you so much for the tips just bought a new circular saw and no idea how to change the blade
I got frustrated with the instruction book. Thanks for the video.
Them diablo blades no joke I love em, make great bi-metal blades
Just what I needed. Had my blade facing wrong way. Thanks.
@Tom Stanley You're welcome!
@@TheHonestCarpenter ;,

I was told that the manufacturer likes to have their logo facing outside. So that is what I tend to go by. And also know the blades circle upwards.
Thanks for the video couldn't figure out how to lock the blade
Thank you! (I did not know about that little stop, it makes it so easy)
@Kayti Sullivan You're welcome! Thanks so much for watching 😀
would be nice if you explained the difference between the 2 replacement blades you linked in the description: 40 tooth vs 24 tooth
Informative. Thank you
Thank you. My manual stupidly doesn't tell me how to do this at all. You've been a big help sir. 👍
I’m glad it helps! 🙂
Thank you for your explanations
You’re welcome, Marie!
Thanks! Did it with your help.
Hey I’m new to my circular saw, just noticed on my macallister saw the loosening is anti clockwise the saw direction . Your one makes perfect sense, my one ??
I just bought a Erbauer circular saw. I need to cut some laminate wood, so I need to change the blade. Can I use a blade from Bosch? Thank you
Can you resharpen the old blades because I bought a 9.99 special from Walmart and it sucks
Thank you
Thank you very much and hello for Long Beach California🤝🏼👍🏻
Awesome, thanks for the help bro...
Hi, I have an Chicago Electric brand circular saw from Harbor Freights but as I’m sawing the blade starts to curve to the right against my will! Any ideas how to fix that?
Can I install a 7-1/4" blade on a Ryobi circular saw that uses a 8-1/2" blade safely? Or ONLY 8-1/2" for this model saw?
Thank you for the video. I had a question. I was looking at bosch circular saws and blades. How do you know the diameter of the blade will fit the saw? The bore diameter is listed as 25mm or 25.4mm and the bore diameter of the blade is listed as 30mm. Would they fit together? would I need a ring? or is the difference too big for a ring? If I want to measure which bore diameter saw blades I can use with a circular what part do I need to measure? Thanks for all your videos, they are really helpful in explaining the details, and I get the courage to buy and use the tools to make things.
Thank you🤘🏼🤘🏼🤘🏼🤘🏼
How do you properly dispose of the old blade?
thanks Dude!... very helpful!
You should have discussed that with some saws you need to install the blade with the printing on the inside!
Thank you for Colorado !
I've seen people wedge the blade so that it is cutting into a piece of scrap wood and then tighten/untighten the blade if they have a saw that doesn't have a blade lock. Does that harm the saw in any way?
Wow thanks feel like an idiot trying to change the blade now I know about the break button 1minute job
Thank you so very much.
Just ɛurchased a saw. And mienbdidnt come withbthe tighten bolt. In order to even turn the dae on. Or the ase can come out flying out.
is that a left handed circular saw?
So the blade cuts upward?
It would be nice if you explain how to do it for circular saw so don’t have that little stop like mine which is a Skil saw
Thank you
Great video.
Thanks
Righty tidy lefty Lucy
hai what kind model your circular saw? and size arbor your circular saw?
Thanks
Hey man, thanks for the video. However, after replacing the blade and putting the bolt back on, I noticed even after tightening the bolt that the blade is still wobbly. What am I doing wrong? Much appreciated if you can help.
Hmm...I’m worried your mounting bolt might not be going all the way in 🤔 Might want to write the manufacturer
The inner washer on my saw fell off and I noticed it had a raised side and a flat/slightly recessed side. Which side goes up against the blade?
Hey magicharry17, it's hard to say without seeing. If the raised side slides into the arbor hole on the saw blade, then it probably gets oriented that way. My makita has something sort of similar
What's your brand?
@@TheHonestCarpenter It's a makita
@@TheHonestCarpenter 5007MG
@@magicharry17 Gotcha. That's a great saw (Makita just makes the best circular saws in my opinion). I actually went out and checked mine--it's an older model obviously, but I saw the flat and raised parts of the inner washer. I had the raised part facing in, but I actually just changed it to face out because the recessed side seemed to fit better that way. You may want to consult a manual or even write Makita, but for what it's worth, I've cut about a million board feet with it the other way and it's never fussed. I'd be inclined to thing the tool is pretty tolerant either way so long as the outer washer and nut are tight.
I dont see a lock button like that on my crappie black and decker , is there supposed to be a tiny bit of play back and forth on the blade
Hey Tice, I haven’t handled the black and decker, but I have felt juuust a little arbor slack on a lot of circular saws. As long as it’s the whole mechanism moving, and not just the blade sliding around, then it may not be too bad. Just handle carefully!
Great tip.
Change blade in Mini table saw
helpful, thx
good explain video i found an old 1 test it out da blade was real wobbly checked da screw it was real loose it didnt have da 13mm wrench so i used a rachet dan luckly it had a hole and stuck a torx screw driver and tighten it
Thanks for watching DD! I’m glad it helped 🙂
Thanks for watching DD! I’m glad it helped 🙂
Thanks looks easy after seeing how to do it
Put your videos on Rumble!
Nice video.
Thank you
Thank you
Why does the saw rotate counter clockwise? Don’t you want the chips to fall on the floor.
Lynn, if the blade rotated in the opposite direction, it would pull the saw forward aggressively. Always wear safety glasses when cutting anything.
@@jobacuda4472 Thank you. Never knew.
Thanks, I could not find that locking button.
They really hide it on the makita 😂
@@TheHonestCarpenter It turned out my old craftsman had no break other than a 2x4. When reinstalling a little oil let me finger tighten.
@@iowaunemployment Waaay back in my career, I can remember holding the blade with rag and turning the arbor nut. Whatever gets it done...safely :)
don't forget to square the blade
Just bought a new one from Dewalt..and the hex bolt will not budge..I'm almost bending the hex key..and it still won't loosen..why the hell do
DEWALT tighten this
so much at the factory!!...really pissed off at their stupidity. 😡
I was skepticle of a 20 volt circular saw. But I have several B&D 20 volt batteries and the drill Works great ua-cam.com/users/postUgkxjpBI8OOeUXib_iT7UomCrQ-uauwZJ62c . I saw the 4 stars and some glowing reviews so decided to purchase this saw. Well, leave your money in your pocket and run a cord because this little saw won't cut
Thanks for the info...... I should know how to do something as simple as changing a saw blade, but didn't know about the little catch on my saw..... If you have any doubts, check UA-cam!
nut won't turn on my ryobi..
My saw has no brake .
This is useless no offense I have a Genesis skill saw it has nine different adjustments and a single thing to lock and I have six different wrenches for skill saw blades bolts and not a single one fits so I'm going to use a and some channel locks and hope I don't cut my finger off.
This video is produced without thinking first. Let me tell you why. He does not tell which skillsaw he is demonstrating blade removal. He did not tell skillsaw has reverse thread. Please do your homework first snd don't misinform people so they don't waste tgeir time by following your video. Thank you.

Oh God how much time these guys take for a less than a minute video.. plz be to the point
This is very helpful for novices, like me.

@@dentalmanuk I personally like the details and the rational for it.
Holyshit get to the point
dude... get on with it, the title says how to change the blade, is it left hand or right hand thread, after you go to it if you want to babble on more go ahead, those who want to listen can but don't torture us who are in a hurry and clicked in to remind ourselves how to install it.
