  • The urgency to grow food has never been more apparent, and no longer needs to be out of reach for those of us living in apartments, townhomes, in rentals, or small spaces without much land. The solution is adopt vertical gardening, a method that allows your plants to grow up, or the opposite of your normal horizontal system of growing a garden. The result is that you'll have healthier crops, deal with less pests, and won't have to do as much bending and stretching to maintain your garden.

      Clory! These things are addictive but work so darn well! I’ve not tried peas, but know that I know you’re having good luck it’s something to try! I really like that I could use way less soil in the leaf for shallow root crops. Fingers crossed I can stop at 4? Lol! Hope you’re weekend is off to a great start!

    Yours is my new favorite channel! I am enjoying learning how to do things on a smaller scale, as we just downsized from acreage to a neighborhood backyard. Vertical and small space gardening ideas are much appreciated. I love my Green Stalks too. I think I need another one. 😊

    • @BecomingaFarmGirl
      @BecomingaFarmGirl  2 роки тому +3

      Aaaaah Angela, aren't Green Stalks addictive? I swore all I needed was 2 and now I have 4, but I'm thinking I'll add 1 more next season?!!! There is so much you can do in a small space! Honestly, sometimes I'm (joyously) overwhelmed by my canning projects, harvesting, learning new skills, cooking from scratch, and making (or mending) things myself but I wouldn't have it any other way. I'll continue to share how much you can do with vertical gardening. Sure, I won't have the harvests like other folks with acres, but that's not the point--its that I can enjoy side salads several times a week from my backyard, make my own home products, and supplement a portion of what we eat, drink, and use with skills that truly pay off. Good to see you!

    • @angelalacy1967
      @angelalacy1967 2 роки тому +1

      I am enjoying every video of yours I've seen so far. I love that you share ideas for different ways to eat what you can in your canning videos.

    • @BecomingaFarmGirl
      @BecomingaFarmGirl  2 роки тому +5

      Hi Alyssa! I understand your reservation, and continue to take your time to watch as many Green Stalk videos here on YT as you decide what's best. Honey, I was in the same boat, because I simply had too many containers lining our deck, and the money that we spent on landscaping, the tension of HOA's and my hubby and company not getting the "full enjoyment" of moving throughout our small space was a source of tension. Last year I started with 2 and let me tell you, I immediately realized that it was what I needed (so much so that I donated all my pots). A Greenstalk checks all the boxes, you can grow more, in less space, it provides provides privacy, its mobile, I get so many compliments now FROM HUBBY, NEIGHBORS AND FOLKS. It's a win-win for sure. I never want to feel like I"m pushing something and this video is not sponsored, I just know that the money I spent on containers and trellis, and all the other stuff would've been cheaper if I just started with a Green Stalk. Regardless, the point is that you are growing to the fullest right where you are! I think GreenStalk will have a Father's Day sale in June. Good to see ya!

    I Love my Greenstalks!!!! I use far less water washing what I grow in the Greenstalks than what I grow in the ground. ...and yes, far fewer pests too. It is very important to follow the directions when assembling a Greenstalk, especially when it comes to what soil to use. This is a very helpful video for those new to Greenstalk vertical gardens. Educational and well done! Cheers!

      Woot! Woot! Linda! I couldn't agree more! Last year, when I still had a number of pots and 2 Green Stalks the compairison was right in my face with time, watering, health, etc. You are so right about the soil (only use a high quality potting soil). I actually added amendments to my brown greens mix garden (worm castings, soil conditioniner and lots of compost) but the base I used last year was potting soil. Thanks so much, Linda! Happy Green Stalk gardening to you my friend!

    I like that it is moveable, however, a simple modification can also help save you water. Yep, I conserve it like I would gold. Make a wheeled platform so that both planter tower and a reservoir can both be placed on the platform and wheels on the bottom of a platform to move both items. Water drainage goes into a reservoir so as to be useful again the next watering by way of a pump. It can be unplugged when you have to move the tower to more sun during seasons change. Simple enough.

    Cassandra... LOVE LOVE LOVE ALL your videos & just got two of my own green stalks. I'm wondering if you ever have a problem with birds or squirrels hijacking your seeds/seedlings if you sow direct? Hi Cassandra! I came across your channel when I was searching for what people put in their GreenStalks. I had just purchased one, and now I'm wishing I bought more! Perhaps they will have a Memorial Day sale. We live on 2 acres of land but it's hard clay plus we have a large variety of wildlife. I've learned vegetables do better in the front of the house because the woodchuck and deer don't venture in the front yard...lol. So I'm a container gardener for many reasons. Anyway, thanks for such an informative video. I'm going through all of your videos now. You've inspired me to go back to canning. I love how you share uses of what you've canned. That is VERY helpful. Can't wait to try some of your recipes. 🥰😋

      Oh, and I wanted to add a tip that I learned from browsing people's channels on their GreenStalks. I have neck problems and couldn't lift the top layer full of potting mix and plants so I put it on empty. Someone shared a tip to use the plug that came with the GreenStalk to put over the center hole so when you fill it, no potting mix would go down the hole, into the water tray below, and clog it up.

I'd recommend tracking how many hours of sunlight you get because this will deternine what types of plants you can successfully grow (and avoid becuse they won't do well). Does that make sense? I so appeciate your encouragement!

    • @BecomingaFarmGirl
      @BecomingaFarmGirl  Рік тому +1

      Hello Artesjia! Awww, thanks so much :). To be transparent, I haven't tried this, but the Green Stalk website says its absolutely a viable option. Here's what's stopping me--indoor space. It would crowd out my basement AND I would need sufficient grow lights to ensure adequate light and watering might be tricky, since I use a hose. Instead, I'm going to extend my growing season by using frost cloths as cold weather approaches to keep my cool season crops alive. I know that they do amazing in greenhouses and folks with a garage will wheel them out during the day and bring them inside at night so its def. possible. Sorry I couldn't be more helpful! Do you currently have a green stalk?

    What is your location for leaving them out year-round. I have no way to do that, but I’ve purchased 2x7 tier, I will just have to take them out after our last freeze, and bring them in before our first in the fall! I WISH I could grow all year long outside, but with 4 feet of snow, they wouldn’t survive here. Ugh

      Hi Bessie! Yes! I totally added with the grounds inside of my French press. When I go to stain it the grounds and used mint stay in the canister but the oils and flavor from the chocolate mint steep beautifully! Yes, chocolate mint is delicious as a cold or hot tea too!

    What is a good soil to use. I don’t think I got quality for my seedings. There were gnats in it. That’s how I learned all about fungus gnats🙄 ( my first year growing from seed and I got any old soil 🙄)

    • @BecomingaFarmGirl
      @BecomingaFarmGirl  2 роки тому +3

      Hi Robyn! Yes, a good soil matters so much and you only want to using a potting mix (not garden or top soil which are too dense and your greenstalk needs sufficient air flow). It sounds like you've diagnosed the problem, and Robyn let me tell you, yo'll make plenty of mistakes gardening and not everything will turn out, it'll frustrate you to no end, but please don't stop! You're learning through your mistakes and things will get easier! While a greenstalk makes planting in small spaces possible, you'll still have to troubleshoot. All of the recent rain and cooler temperatures we've got destroyed my basil and some of my softer lettuces turned to mush. Solution? I shoul've covered my garden after the first day of rain. You win some, loose some but growing in self-sufficiency skills and the lifestyle you start to move towards is still worth it!
