  • Do you want to grow food for yourself or your family but think it isn't possible (or worth it) because you live in a small space, don't have land, or consider yourself a beginner gardener? The truth is, you CAN grow food and lots of it in a small space and in your spare time by starting with the right tools and considering container garden vegetables. If you want to maximize your growing space, your best option is to start growing vertically and being strategic about the types of crops you plant. If you want food fast, ditch the full size fruits and vegetables and opt for fast-growing organic hybrids which can take you from seed to harvest in 30, 35 or 60 days so that you can enjoy fresh food from your garden on the regular. In this video I share why I choose to garden in a GreenStalk vertical garden, the seeds that work best for small space gardeners and other products that enable me to have a successful garden. You can do this. Let GreenStalk give you a greenthumb!

😯Wow, color me inspired! I am on the website now, ready to put your code in… but 1 question: HOW do you keep the animals off?
I’m a super busy mom of 2 littles & a puppy, so everyday after work we are in the backyard. I only have enclosed porches though, but thinking of putting the Greenstalk 3 tier in a spot that gets Sun so might act like a greenhouse. Have you grown anything inside or on a porch?
My husband & I had success with a raised bed garden before kids, but it was a lot of work of course that I don’t have time for now. But absolutely want to show my kids to grow their own food ASAP. Thanks girl! ☀️

So, I’m very intrigued by your video and think the vertical gardening idea is the way to go. I went online and priced out everything. It looks like green stock currently sells the five tier vertical planter for $149. With your code it would be $139. Then, looking closely at what it includes it does not have the base with the wheels. I went back to look at the accessories and for an additional $60, I can purchase the spinner base and mover with wheels. So, without tax included, it looks to be $200. That’s without any seed packs, which I may follow your lead and purchase those bundles from botanical interests. I’m a huge cook and I love to eat vegetables. I love watching your videos and feel like the two of us could be friends. So, I want everyone to know I am not being a critic when it comes to this information. I am very fiscally responsible and if you are wanting to take on this venture, just know it is going to cost you about $300 to start. Personally, I feel that that money is totally worth it because I will reap the vegetable and herb rewards daily at my home. I thought it was very important to point out that the spinner base and wheels is a separate purchase, which I did not feel was clear in the video.

Hello Roycroft Girl! I 100% agree with the comment you left and I'm so glad you shared this. Initially, when I first started to garden with more intention, I did so with a collection of thrifted and store-bought pots and 5 gallon buckets. I was having success, but I as wanted to expand my garden, I found myself needing to purchase another pot, plant stakes, and then to protect my deck from pot rim stains (they are horrible to clean even with a power washer) I started to get drainage trays, but the problem is you need them for every single stinkin' pot and I didn't want to scale in that direction (or at that price). Since I had a collection close to 40-50 pots, with larger items like peppers and tomatoes growing, those buckets were heavy and I had to spend time watering each and every pot and some pots needed more watering depending on the material they were made out of (clay, cloth or plastic). It started to take some of the enjoyment away from gardening as I realized that my system was inefficient and I was taking away valuable walkway space. I realized that if I wanted to grow more I needed to give vertical gardening a try. I did the math between continuing to scale with pots, drainage trays, and rolling planter caddys for 30 more plants (the minimum I could plant with a Greenstalk), the GS won out, plus it makes your gardening routine so much easier on your body, it's way more efficient to water and fertilizer multiple plants at once and I could reclaim deck space. I told myself I wouldn't get more than 3, and its been (5 years now) since my initial purchase and I'm JUST getting the insect and frost covers (I made it work with rolls of shade cloth you can get from Lowes or Home Depot and just used my clothes pins to clip them down, now that I'll my garden has grown to 4 GreenStalks, it'll just be faster to cover them using the fitted covers). It's an investment, but one that I can take with me when we move in several years because I can't imagine NOT planting in these. There's also the peace of mind in knowing that even though I don't have land, I have a system that truly provides a dent in food I don't need to rely on the grocery store to provide, that tastes better and is chemical free. I make all of my own amendments (I make my own bone meal, fish meal, worm castings, NPK fertilizer, egg shells for calcium, coffee grounds for N, etc. by repurposing my food scraps so that truly saves money). Like you, cooking and gardening are my joys in life and so the purchases I've made over the last few years not only contribute to learning how to garden as I wait on a single family homestead, but one that brings me great joy as a canner and mostly cook from scratch home cook. Always pair your GS purchase with a holiday sale (they have one coming up in May for Mother's Day) and a coupon code. I took my time and made sure that I ONLY considered getting another GS after I had packed out multiple pockets and truly saw the benefit of them. Nothing brings me greater joy than looking outside of the window and seeing my "outdoor pantry" or going out to harvest fresh herbs for meals I make or hot teas I enjoy with my husband with the morning or coming home and rubbing my hands across lemon balm and lavender to destress from the work day. These items are durable, from a small US family owned business I feel good about giving my money to and the customer service experience is fantastic! I totally did not make it clear that the spinner base was separate (my intention was NOT to mislead, I just plum forgot). Keep me posted if you decide to give one (or two) a try!

$300 covers the wasted food I've had to toss from the waxy GMO grocery store fruits and vegetables (labeled as organic from Whole Foods) and the ' regular' fruits/vegetables that have gone rotten. There has slowly been a food shortage, so I wouldn't be surprised if the price reaches $600 over time. It is truly a blessing to be able to grow my own food. I have never gardened however so spending what is required will hold me accountable to make sure its a success lol.

Hi Ashley! Awww, thanks so much! GreenStalk has truly given me the gift of gardening in a way I wouldn't be able to access in a townhome. I told myself I wouldn't get more than 3 but over the years as I continue to be impressed by how much you can plant in them I keep getting the pull to "get just 1 more"! Keep me posted on the progress of your GS and what you intend to plant. Did you get the Original or Leaf? What color?!

    • @AshleyByTheOcean
      @AshleyByTheOcean Рік тому

I bought the original in the stone color. I’m planting a good variety- greens, herbs, beans, radishes, husk cherries, broccoli and determinate varieties of sugar snap peas, tomatoes and cucumbers. I have a handful of railing planters and a few other pots that we’ll be growing some more of the things we tend to eat the most of.
As soon as I pulled the first container out of the box, my husband said he was so surprised by the small footprint, maybe we should get another one right now… I told him we’ll just start with one and get a second during another sale.
I’m thinking that next year we’ll try out baby watermelons and sugar pumpkins - I saw a really great method for using netting and garden staples to support the fruit!

Yup, Tammy, you saw them, the compact patio versions of tomatoes that top out at 1-2 feet tall produce a bounty cherry sized tomatoes across 3-4 months. Stick with the ones that have solid stems (but I still prefer to use a mini-stake for added support). I've bought my tomatoes from my local farmers market so these were already going, but yes, they are turning orange and yellow and delish!

Hi Connie! I'm so happy to hear this! Even with limited land and space, there are still a number of work arounds us "city dwellers" can do to leverage what we've got! I recommend just starting with 1 and not more than 2 (perhaps 1 leaf GreenStalk for shallow root crops like herbs and lettuces) OR the original for root crops and vining vegetables. Get the mover base so that you can easily rotate your garden with ease. I'm going to continue to feature my GS in my cooking/canning and garden update videos because these planters are the joy of my spring and summer early fall when it comes to being able to have access gardening. They are super efficient to water and fertilize and its lovely supporting a small US family owned business. Keep me posted!

I totally was skeptical in the same way but when you start to read about how shallow the roots are on most herb and lettuce crops, you realize that the GS ensures that you are efficient soil amounts you'll need (and don't). The Original Planter is for full sized crops (if you want to grow vining crops like squash or cucumbers get the plant supports) and the root system not only uses the depth of the pocket, but also spreads out throughout the tier. Unfortunately we aren't in a place where I can do anything really.... We're looking for another to move to so I'm in learning and admiring stage for now..
The building has a small garden space however the people who live here just don't care. Last year someone tore up all the squash plants for no reason.. I was heartbroken 💔
It's an elderly community and I never expected that they would rather smoke and drink (get high) then do anything else!!

All I know is we need to get out of here (Chicago IL), it's just getting to expensive and way more scary!

A salsa garden sounds delicious! For your tomatoes, you've gotta go with a compact patio variety (one that stays short and bushy but will continuously produce from spring to fall right until it starts to get cold again) because they do AMAZING in a greenstalk and will keep you "tomato rich"! If I didn't have these planters, there's no way I'd be able to grow as much as I'm able to just right on a deck. Keep me posted!

Hi Alisha! Yes, you will LOVE the hybrid/seeds I shared in this video (and I'll have more to share that I've sourced from my farmers market and a few other seed brands throughout the growing season). I love that you've also gone "GreenStalk crazy" (I told myself I've never have more than 3, haha). I also just saw the irrigation system and I'm going to grab that too. Honey, they truly think of everything for us gardeners! Love, love, LOVE GreenStalk! Keep me posted on your garden!

I’m convinced. I have space but if I can use my space for playing in the yard with my family and entertaining all while growing vertically, that’s a win! I’m also not eager to fill my yard with beds and invite critters. That’s my biggest hurdle. With green stalk I feel a little more assured that I won’t have that problem so much… I hope. Thank you!

I'm telling you, after years of growing in pots and gallon buckets that just cluttered my deck space, couldn't be easily moved to catch the sun (or shade) and left pot stains on deck, GreenStalks have been the easiest solution for maximizing growth and enjoyment as a small space gardener.

And as a member of IGC, there’s nothing worst than someone coming into the nursery touting “I’m a master gardener!” They know it all, while asking all the questions and murmuring “yes, that’s right, I know.” Gardening is low cost, healthy and requires little knowledge and lots of patience and forgiveness. Try try again & “grow crazy!”

It should do well in the kitchen if you have good sunlight coming into the kitchen for several hours of the day.
