I remember getting a rainbow pencil in elementary school at a book fair! It was rather chunky for a pencil and had a very thick lead, I actually had to get my dad to sharpen it with a knife because I didn’t have a pencil sharpener big enough for it 😂 I think I still have it kicking around somewhere, but I just remember thinking I was so cool for having a multicoloured pencil 😂❤️

Best use of the pencil: EMBRACE THE RAINBOW. Hold the pencil as if it were just a regular graphite pencil. Sketch as if you were doing a regular pencil drawing. Don’t attempt to control which color you’re on, either when drawing lines or shading, just let it happen. It would be so cool to see the naturally occurring rainbow pattern that would emerge, kind of like knitting with rainbow yarn.
Well, we do like challenges here...
Exactly what I was going to say! It's about using the tool for what it's good for. You could for watercolours to make a super detailed drawing or embrace its strengths. I was watching a sketchbook review where the artist liked to go outside and sketch mostly with ink but created some diversity with the rainbow pencil by drawing the crowd in the background outlining and shading like it was a regular pencil not worrying about the colour. The random variations added a lot of interest and a splash of colour.
Exactly what I was thinking during the whole video.
Yes, I've seen some life drawings done that way. Looked great - so lively. Hmmm... I think I've got an old rainbow pencil lurking around somewhere...
Yes, this!
This could look really cool with Jazza's drawings if he used his regular pencils for most of it and then used these for textured effects.
Best use of this pencil:
Give it to your kids as a distraction to keep their hands off your prisma color pencils and copic markers
Yes! You should win the gift card lol
Lol yeah😂
Then watch them lose it when they can't do one single color at one time
@@spotlessspace7666 that's when you just tell them how good a job they are doing at smothly transitioning colors lol
@@legosk8er92 I AGREE 😂
I was under the impression that the appeal of these was the fact that the colors changed and mixed while drawing. Lines change over time and filled areas look like tie dye.
Yes he does not get the point of Rainbow pencils...so sad.
An exercise where Jazza is displaying his controlling nature. I feel the point of rainbow pencils are to explore color in a random way to achieve unexpected results.

*Rainbow pencils exist for multi-color effect*
Jazza: trying to use the color individually
Right?!? Im sitting here jaw clenched cuz I just want him to do the intended rainbow effect
Exactly!
ikr, i was like, 'yes rainbow drawings,.. then, 'oh nevermind, but this kool too''.. lol..
He tried so hard he did a normal pencils drawing, just crappier
I would have liked to see a drawing without separating the individual colors . Sort of like a rainbow rave wonderland .
Yeah that was actually what I was expecting
It would've been really cool! Might've looked like a drug trip tho 😂
Same here
I felt like he defeated the whole point of the rainbow pencil by separating them
Same here!
I feel like the pencils are just to make your writing look cool lol. I can imagine if someone in elementary school had one they would be the cool kid for a while because everyone would want their pencil.
@@jessicaquick kids are so mean. wow
funniest things make kids popular. _gum_ made me popular as a kid. that would _never_ happen as an adult
By the way, do you know that the lines that were drawn on the sides of the pencil indicated what the resulting color combination is?
For example, when there were straight lines, it meant that the colors would be consistent as well, no matter how you pour. When they were curly, they changed according to their direction according to the pattern.
I wish he had drawn both just “rainbowy” that could also look interesting, just let the pencil do it’s thing
I dont want to disrespect Jazza, his work is great, he kinda took an aproach to have many colors in one pencil and try to obtain each one from there, as if it was practical just to carry one pencil. But the other would've been fun :p
He over thought it.
Yea like what the fuck was the point of using a rainbow color pencil if you’re just gonna try n use one color lmao
Yeah same
yeah, i gave the vid a dislike. I have rainbow pencils and they're cool. Wished he would've played with them a little more. The shape of your tip can create different effects, You can get effects similar to this artist.

I recommend watching Kasey Golden's video instead, she utilises the rainbow pencil like this!
Jazza: Has a pencil with all the colors.....Isolates each color..
What a missed opportunity!! It's not ONE pencil with all the colors, but ALL the colors in one pencil!
Maybe Jazza should try to draw with the pencil again, but take advantage of the shifts in colors.
Idk this could have been an interesting art piece, and probably reduced his blood pressure.
He should have just drawn something pretending they weren’t rainbow
Yeah exactly
that's what I was thinking! totaly missed opportunity for something interesting. This needs to be re-done or else.... :D
And he could also try getting pencils with different combinations of colors. I have a nice set each with different colors and they are fun to play with
@@DiamondPaintArt Oohh! Do you know the name of your set?
I use rainbow gel pens at work. Throughout my day I have to write stuff down on a note pad and I usually fill a couple of pages. Its fun watching the color slowly change as the day goes by.
Does anyone else remember being like four or five and putting a few colored pencils together to draw swirls and just feeling like the biggest legend. Like WOW, I DISCOVERED SOMETHING!
The practical use of a rainbow pencil is to use it as kindling for a fire.

Could have drawn something more psychedelic as well
You should look at Koh-i-noor, I Think you would actually find their “Magic” pencils as Well as their “tri-tone” pencils quite interesting as it is an entirly different take on rainbowpencils. It’s like someone thought, how Can we make a multicoloured pencil That are more than just a gimmick.
Sorry if it sounds like a commercial (it is not!) and if there is a Lot of mistakes, but it is currently past 3am and the autocorrect keep changing every other Word to someting entirely different that have nothing to do With english.
Love Tritone pencils...they help when my arthritis is acting up...great for landscapes and water.
I endorse this message. I love the Tri Tones and recently bought the Koh-I-Nor Magic pencil rainbow thick lead for my multi colored lead clutch pencil lead holder. I am pleasantly surprised by how fun it is to sketch with. I can’t wait to use it outdoors, so I don’t need to bring a bunch of different colors. Btw, I have the same problem with the autocorrect, especially when I’m tired. No worries, you did fine.
Indeed felt like you didn't embrace the medium and fought with it. Next time I'd sugest embracing the mixes to get a psychedelic or maddeningly colorful effect.

Jazza, I absolutely love your work!! I used to have these pencils as a kid. The challenge you created for yourself was really unique, i never thought to do that. I had always just let the rainbow flow. I think you could save yourself a headache if you tried again and just did a flowy piece. I still love what you've done none the less!! 😁

I am rather disappointed he didn't embrace this part of the pencil especially because most of his critique of the pencil is that it's not easy to use in a way it wasn't intended to be used because he didn't even want to try the way these pencils are supposed to work.
Rainbow pencil: You can use a lot of colors at once with me
Jazza: I'm trying to get only red
I always saw these rainbow pencils as items to doodle with. They weren't meant to make sense in an individual, primary colour sort of way. They were for scrawling all over the page, to see what kind of random discoveries you could make. At least, that's how I used them to get the most from their design. It was fun without having to think about it.
I like the idea of just coloring comfortably without needing to color with a specific color just let the pencil choose it’s own color abstract art
I love how he buys all the things he couldn’t get as a child now that he’s and adult, guess that satisfies the disappointment of not being able to get them before. I do the same with clothes and shoes now

those pencils are great in my opinion . they have their ups and downs but i found them most useful for blending the colors in a tad bit easier . theyre pretty fun to use too . hope you enjoy them in the long run !
I mean I love the rainbow colored pencils but they're not good for individually coloring stuff. They're more like for details in hair or eyes to add more depth but also add multi colors in to make it different and not one dimensional. so I would say these colored pencils are best for detail works and not for blotting in color. that's what I like them for because you see some paintings and stuff that the hair has like reds blues greens and yellows in there to add a little bit more texture in there and that's why I think the multicolored colored pencils exist for.
Omg, my lovely grandma LOVES these pencils. Every card she writes, whether it's a Christmas card or a Birthday card, she refuses to use any other writing utensil. It's so cute! When I was in kindergarten I gave them out in goodie bags at my birthday. My grandma being a mild kleptomaniac, stole a bunch of them. Man, I love her, shes the best!
Best use: I think they could be used to create a “black and white” drawing but with more interest! Sorta like charcoal or graphite but rainbow!!

I just really like to write with the pencils when I was younger. it was cool to see the words change colour as you go especially if it’s hand writing.
I have never used a Rainbow pencil, because I imagined that if you need to layer a line so it could be darker but it would just look like a different color. Plus I'm I tiny control freak and perfectionist when it comes my art. I love your videos, I haven't been watching you for too long but you're already one of my favorite UA-camrs. By the way, you did an amazing illustration! Especially given the fact that the type of supplies you were given with weren't exactly "top notch", at least not for this type of illustration in particular.
Jazza: Buys rainbow pencils
Also Jazza: Uses them to color individual colors when he could do that easily with normal pencils
Right?! The whole point was having a multi-colour effect.
You should do a "I'm a professional" t-shirt with a stickman that doesn't look a pro at all, like holding something the opposite way.
Or leaning on a trash can full of rejected arkworks...
Or his hand chopped off while trying to saw into wood
The stickman should be pushing a door that says pull!
This needs to happen
That's great. I draw so I would love one like that says "I'm a professional artist" with a bunch of scraped artwork, a stick man or broken art supplies
I used a similar pencil back in grade school and honestly I used it either to write or to draw fun multi color sketches where the color would randomly change. The point of these pencils is to not care what color you're working with only to sit back and see a fun result
I could see those pencils being used for abstract backgrounds. Something like stripes of random colours or maybe waves or just an entirely random background.
We need a ten hour compilation of Jazza being a "professional" artist.

When I was a little kid, I had one of these pencils and didn’t know it was supposed to be multiple colors... so, when I started using it, all the colors just blended to brown. A few years later I found the pencil again and realized WHY it just blended to brown.
Couldn’t stop the thinking about that during the video... I was a dumb kid
No, just inexperienced. 😉
I actually really enjoy my rainbow pencils, I use them to draw more abstract things, I color my adult coloring pages with them, it's cool to have a completely random result. It adds a cool mosaic look if you use the color gradient from one edge on a small area and repeat in random areas, letting the color change organically.

I have seen these pencils in my elementary school store, the practicality of a rainbow pencil is that its FUN . You should give them to your son he would love em
I actually had a rainbow pencil in my elementary school. I remember very clearly one time that I decided to use it, over any other normal colored pencil. Because I wanted to color a dress on my princess drawing but I couldn’t decide on one color so I grabbed a multicolored pencil I thought to myself : Perfect. But when I finished coloring it, it turned this shitty color… you know the one, browny/green sick color. And then I cried because i thout that I ruined it. This one multicolor pencil gave me fear of finishing my drawings, because I was afraid that it would ruin them…
And after some years I suddenly remembered this situation and thought to myself ? Was it my fault or was it the pencils? And I bought a rainbow pencil and tried to draw something with it. Turned out that it was my fault and after a couple of practice you can draw something decent with it .
i use the pencils in coloring books when im coloring a background that i want to have an abstract colorful almost watercolor feel. i color in circular motions and slowly rotate + its always unique :)

I kinda wish you approached using the rainbow pencil not as a color pencil, but as a regular pencil, like how you would do with graphite art or something, where the art would come from the contrast between the rainbow and the white of the canvas rather than between the colors themselves; kinda like those black scratch canvases where there's a rainbow underneath.
i still think a return to this without working around the pencil to use it like a normal one would be fun, but would realistically require using other pencils to support rainbows everywhere

I personally think it's kinda cool that it forced you to lean into the shadows more than you meant to. You mentioned that the second one is meant to be a more gritty superhero style comic, and I think if you had made more of the shirt yellow as you intended, it would still convey that, but wouldn't have been quite as firmly in that genre.

Oh ok 😐
Me and my friends used to use these as a drawing challenge. We started doing these challenges when we discovered your character designed sessions. We originally determined things by creating lists and determining them with our dnd dice, ironically it was before you did that challenge. But the biggest challenge was, as you’ve also discovered, completely filling in an area with a single color. But in the end it made for a fun challenge that was made even more fun and funnier when we laughed at our difficulties and challenges. And yes they are not very practical at all but eventually you grow to like them or to at least tolerate them a bit. Especially when it came to blending. I think one of the best of our experiences with these pencils was when we came across a “variety pack” of these multi colored pencils.
Yeah, I want to see a regular pencil sketch (like you would with a normal 1-color pencil), just focusing on light/shade, but doing it with the rainbow colors. Maybe try to make the highlights more yellow than anything else, and/or add details that are specific colors. But I do honestly think the appeal of these pencils (outside of being a fun novelty for kids) is that they force an element of randomness into your art and that you have to learn how to roll with and adapt to. :-)

I once watched a professional artist (the woman who designed Cabbage Patch Dolls - no, she's not rich. That toy company bought the design for a pittance from her.) draw for an afternoon with one of those multicolored pencils. It was fascinating!! She didn't bother with isolating the colors - she just had at it! A young girl walking through a flowering garden - and it was GORGEOUS!! Amazing!
You could try to embrace the color changing aspects of the pencil, instead of trying to force it to be one color. It would turn out pretty cool if you did that.
