@@anrods LOLLL, thats what I was thinking... GoPro did not take consumer comments into consideration when designing this. They basically made this to stop ppl from taking apart their stuff. I still love GoPro and will always support them. Also thanks to GoPro for bringing back protune!
Still a very large flat profile, lay the flat portion down, pcb/motherboard and have a flip up low profile camera module. So that it does not catch all the wind and slow down my drone.
Here's my suggestion for the Gopro session, carbon fiber body to make it lighter, changeable lens, aluminum/carbon fiber lens protector, touch screen at the back, strong magnets on the sides (optional) for mounting, wireless charging.....and waterproof....
I'm an FPV guy and so tired of stripping down Gopro 8's for video projects that need to use my smaller FPV drones. This is exactly what we needed and is the same price as third-party naked gopro 8's. Thanks for the thoughtful video as always, DC!
Tbh though, coming direct from GoPro and having a raft of feature missing (multiple mics,speaker,gps,screens etc) it should be significantly cheaper, Up till now you paid over the odds for someone to risk bricking it at disassembly. I agree it’s a good thing but lmho it’s overpriced

In this case, GoPro sent over a loaner unit to review. However, normally I use a mail/packaging forwarding service (such as for the Skydio 2 drone). Works pretty well, though you end up paying $50-70 per package in FedEx/DHL/UPS fees you bring over (so it's best to group stuff together).

I think for most fpv pilots you will hit record before you take off. To me it's an improvement to power the camera off your balance lead on your battery. Having the power leads hanging off your flight controller means you need to take extra care with the cable when not flying with the camera, and it's one less thing to get caught in props during a crash.
$499 for a stripped down Hero 10. Removed the two screens and the battery. This seems like an awesome option but maybe $250. It’s not waterproof? They should have launched this on 4/1.
This product appeals to people who were buying the regular GoPro to put on their FPV drones. This model has the benefit of being lighter, but if it was cheaper it would just cannibalize profits (a consumer that was spending 499 would now only spend 250). The lower price could potentially bring in new consumers, but realistically, who outside of the FPV world would buy a no-screen, no-battery, no-watherproofing GoPro?
@@simioni yeah, but gopro stripping down a 10 well, no, but only using a few simple components out of their production, and then put it in a designed case for it, which is basically almost the same as a 10 in a betafpv case, and then they want over 500 for this? also not waterproof.. a new session would have had more sucess than this thing. nice that gopro is kind of honoring fpv people, but in reality, the fpv community would need a new session much more than that. also TV production used the session5s quite a lot. I personally would buy a 10 or even 8 and convert it myself, rather than buyin a 10 bones for this price.
@@hallio111 I share this sentiment! I really liked the Session form factor as well. Just saying that it's easy to understand why GoPro priced this very niche product the same as their regular model. The Session was discontinued precisely because it cannibalized sales for the more expensive Hero 5. Now everything "new" we'll get from GoPro will probably be very niche and relatively expensive, leaving the Hero market alone and only serving the lower price point market by keeping older models on sale.
Great review! This is kind of tempting as a current GoPro subscription person because it’s only $349 then and then you get ReelSteady with it which is normally $100. I have a broken screen Hero 10 and the parts to decase it myself but I have been nervous to do it and I could just pay $100 to get it replaced.
Though this looks pretty dope, I dont understand why they didnt just put all the hero 10 functions into a session body. I mean, they stripped the screen, The battery and the waterproofing so why not just go with a smaller body that can cut through wind better?

Having difficulty with the Quik app recognizing the Bones. Also, I point the camera a the QR setting code I created, the red light blink a couple of times and I assume it took the settings. Then I go out and test the camera and everything is washed out/overexposed!! Any suggestions?
Great review as always. This is definitely step in right direction for FPV users but... In my eyes there are so major flaws: 1. Not waterproof - so it would be very risky to take a shot close to waterfall. Also if You crash drone and it falls into snow?? Camera will bet wet.. 2. It uses drone battery - did You test how much flight time did You lose because of that?
What it boils down to is if you're just an enthusiast like I am and want to use the camera for more than one purpose. 400 is pretty steep for a single purpose rig.
I just realized the only way to get any data from this unit via hardwire would be to use an sd card extender cable - however, once that piece of glue is built, this would be able to be hooked up to something like a larger SSD and if the software didn't barf at some point could record terabytes of footage instead of just a handful of gigs.

Great for GoPro to acknowledge the huge amount of cameras being stripped down to naked by us pilots in order to save weight. Now at least make it cheaper since you're saving on screens, batteries and GPS.
Hello one question! It's not towards this GoPro particularly. I have a GoPro Hero 7 Black. I record sometimes with it but just only for a hobby. The only reason I have problem with my GoPro is shooting at 4k 60 FPS only gives me 45 minutes of vlogging time. Is it worth it to upgrade to Hero 9 or Hero 10? I looked up the battery time for the 9 and 10 and you just barely get over an hour recording in 4k 60FPS. It honestly seems like I will just have to be switching my batteries all the time just to record a vlog. Thanks.
Thanks for the video. It's a shame that it's so heavy compared to a naked GP8 (which weighs half and even has a screen). Otherwise it's great. Does it keep its settings or you you have to put the same barcode in front of it each time after power loss?
That Insta360 camera does not top out at 4K, it tops out at 1080p. And regarding the image quality, frankly, in the footage presented here, it looks pretty crappy on my 4K monitor..
Wish they did exactly this with a built in battery. I don’t want the front screen , all the mics etc that’s on the normal 10. Too much faff just need a smaller cam

Ray, I know drones aren't a big emphasis on your channel, but have you ever thought about testing the Autel EVO drones? They're the biggest competitor to DJI.
It's on my mid-range to-do list. I've chatted with them a bit. Drones are always tough for me to test, namely because of the flight restrictions in Amsterdam. For the flying test on this, I have to go find a car-share car, drive out of town to get beyond the Schiphol no-fly-zone (massive), and then do my tests and come back. Of course, invariably (like today), I manged to forget the giant battery charging bank I put right at the front door (fully charged) ready to go....sigh. But yeah, definitely on the list of things I want to try.

with $499 w/o suscription price tag, I think I prefer to stay with dji action 2, certainly dji action 2 has a lot points to improves compare to GP, like removable lens, sd card slot

That'd be tricky. The problem is there's no battery, so you'd have to wire a battery for it. Technically speaking you could do it, but then you'll also need to find a way to hold/attach the battery do the DJI FPV drone, since that too doesn't have any open battery ports. Given the Bones is the same price as a Hero 10, and the weight of GoPro is relatively trivial for the DJI FPV system, you're far better off just mounting a Hero 10 (which has it's own battery) to the top of the DJI FPV, using one of the mounts (which is what I do). amzn.to/37plBP2
499$ seems to much, considering it's not a complete gopro and if you compare it to the insta360 smo it is also way to heavy for what it is. The only thing that seems to be better is the connector on the back and the case looks slightly more durable ( nothing you could not solve with a 3d printer on for the insta). Jello also seems to be worse.
No front or back screen, no GPS, no battery which is less cost and way less production time with no waterproofing and putting it all together. This is half the cam for the same price lol. I didn't really recognize that until now. Wowza! What a rip off. It should be at most 1/2 the price of a regular GP10. I'm puking green for greed lol. Now the real question is, are they using a-stock or b-stock or c-stock boards? Hmmm.
Hey! Is the power port on the back of the Bones the same that's on the back of the Naked Hero 8 form GepRC? (basically, can I use the power cable that's already on the Cinelog25 to power this as well, and just swap out the cameras?)
I don't have the GepRC unit, but my undestanding from looking at it is that it's identical. I bought a pile of extra cables (www.amazon.de/gp/product/B07SVZ1CR3/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_asin_title_o02_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1) - and those do fit (or, half of them do, half of them are a different connector).
Not easily. You'd have to attach a battery somehow, since the DJI FPV drone doesn't have any external power accessible to it. It'd be far easier (and the same price) to just attach a normal GoPro Hero 10 Black to the DJI FPV unit, since there are standard mounts for that which cost a couple buckets. And from a power/weight standpoint, the DJI FPV is such a beast that the Hero 10 is largely a non-issue.

Get the insta 360smo, i can only recommend it. Price is way better and i like the video it produces way better, less jello, lighter ... Just make sure you protect the connector on the insta
Yeah, one thing to keep in mind is that it does include the ReelSteady license. But, my guess is probably 100% of the target market already have that license, thus, there's no cost savings there. Of course, the stabilization of the Hero 10 is (IMHO) quite a big better than the Hero 8 - but your point is defiitenly valid.
Besides the ridiculous pricing. I'm a bit dissapointed that you're reviewing a product that isn't even available in the Netherlands. I don't know if you're still living here or not but if you are (looking at the flight footage it looks like it) this review kinda feels like a kick in the nuts.
I review products from around the world. Sometimes I review products only available in Europe, sometimes the opposite. UA-cam is global, as are most viewers of this channel.

But as a potential buyer who has to spent his hard earned cash on these things I tend to trust people who themselves have spend their hard earned cash instead of just getting one for review-purposes. The fact that these companies keep sending you their products (whether you return them or not is irrelevant) means that the people in their marketing department think it will sell them more product. That makes you exactly what I said in my previous post, a marketing tool. But I think at least a part of you already knew this because otherwise you wouldnt have reacted so fiercly to my previous post. No shame in it though, keep doing what you're doing. I'll watch your videos regardless. I just don't use them as buying advise.

An attempt to catch up. GoPro has been failing so hard for so long. Now they are grasping at the straws! FPV people have already been doing naked, I don't think they all gonna buy these.
Is struggle a bit to see how the Insta360 Go2 is superior, especially with quite a bit lower resolution and quality. The DJI action 2 a case could be made due to waterproofing.
@@Dcrainmaker well...lighter, weatherproof & shockproof with plethora of lenses to choose from...and imo better to have crystal clear 1080p or 2K than some 4K with considerably more bulky design even when it's stripped like this. Go2 i can put on any 2S btw and go through any obstacle. Try to do that with this. It would be bigger than a drone itself hahah

I think a small camera is still one of the areas coming this year. 4 total markets they said, not sure this "bones" even counts as one of them.

If it is customary to launch gopro 11 this year, then gopro 10 bone is a good strategy to solve the inventory.

Weird seeing 2 cameras on the copter because no modern action cams can send live video.
Any way to use a balance plug to GoPro adapter like from inflight. Love to transfer camera to other drones then just one.
Yes, that's how I ran my beta fpv sm0 4k. It's pretty easy to make your own cable.

Ray, I know drones aren't a big emphasis on your channel, but have you ever thought about testing the Autel EVO drones? They're the biggest competitor to DJI.
It's on my mid-range to-do list. I've chatted with them a bit. Drones are always tough for me to test, namely because of the flight restrictions in Amsterdam. For the flying test on this, I have to go find a car-share car, drive out of town to get beyond the Schiphol no-fly-zone (massive), and then do my tests and come back. Of course, invariably (like today), I manged to forget the giant battery charging bank I put right at the front door (fully charged) ready to go....sigh. But yeah, definitely on the list of things I want to try.
@@Dcrainmaker I'm hoping to buy a drone this year, and based on your videos of the "follow me" obstacle avoidance, I'm really heavily leaning towards the Skydio 2, but I've heard the video is much better on dones that maybe don't do obstacle avoidance as well. It's a conundrum.
with $499 w/o suscription price tag, I think I prefer to stay with dji action 2, certainly dji action 2 has a lot points to improves compare to GP, like removable lens, sd card slot

That'd be tricky. The problem is there's no battery, so you'd have to wire a battery for it. Technically speaking you could do it, but then you'll also need to find a way to hold/attach the battery do the DJI FPV drone, since that too doesn't have any open battery ports. Given the Bones is the same price as a Hero 10, and the weight of GoPro is relatively trivial for the DJI FPV system, you're far better off just mounting a Hero 10 (which has it's own battery) to the top of the DJI FPV, using one of the mounts (which is what I do). amzn.to/37plBP2
499$ seems to much, considering it's not a complete gopro and if you compare it to the insta360 smo it is also way to heavy for what it is. The only thing that seems to be better is the connector on the back and the case looks slightly more durable ( nothing you could not solve with a 3d printer on for the insta). Jello also seems to be worse.
No front or back screen, no GPS, no battery which is less cost and way less production time with no waterproofing and putting it all together. This is half the cam for the same price lol. I didn't really recognize that until now. Wowza! What a rip off. It should be at most 1/2 the price of a regular GP10. I'm puking green for greed lol. Now the real question is, are they using a-stock or b-stock or c-stock boards? Hmmm.
Hey! Is the power port on the back of the Bones the same that's on the back of the Naked Hero 8 form GepRC? (basically, can I use the power cable that's already on the Cinelog25 to power this as well, and just swap out the cameras?)
I don't have the GepRC unit, but my undestanding from looking at it is that it's identical. I bought a pile of extra cables (www.amazon.de/gp/product/B07SVZ1CR3/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_asin_title_o02_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1) - and those do fit (or, half of them do, half of them are a different connector).

Not easily. You'd have to attach a battery somehow, since the DJI FPV drone doesn't have any external power accessible to it. It'd be far easier (and the same price) to just attach a normal GoPro Hero 10 Black to the DJI FPV unit, since there are standard mounts for that which cost a couple buckets. And from a power/weight standpoint, the DJI FPV is such a beast that the Hero 10 is largely a non-issue.

My head immediately went to wiring these on a bike with a battery pack located elsewhere on the frame... until the lack of waterproofing.
Definitely wouldn't be hard at all... I saw someone on Reddit already created a USB-C power pass-through for it.

Get the insta 360smo, i can only recommend it. Price is way better and i like the video it produces way better, less jello, lighter ... Just make sure you protect the connector on the insta

Yeah, one thing to keep in mind is that it does include the ReelSteady license. But, my guess is probably 100% of the target market already have that license, thus, there's no cost savings there. Of course, the stabilization of the Hero 10 is (IMHO) quite a big better than the Hero 8 - but your point is defiitenly valid.

Besides the ridiculous pricing. I'm a bit dissapointed that you're reviewing a product that isn't even available in the Netherlands.
I don't know if you're still living here or not but if you are (looking at the flight footage it looks like it) this review kinda feels like a kick in the nuts.
I review products from around the world. Sometimes I review products only available in Europe, sometimes the opposite. UA-cam is global, as are most viewers of this channel.

I don't really care that it won't be available outside the US, because while it undoubtedly had the best video-quality and there obviously is a market for it. I would never spend $500 on this thing because it's such an obvious moneygrab from Gopro and to be honest it's an insult to the FPV-community.
If you would have called it like it is, then you would have said that it's an absolute disgrace that they are charging this amount of money for a device that cost them nothing in R&D and has half the hardware in it compared to a normal gopro.
As I said in my previous post, I think your videos are very informative and in-depth when it comes to the functionality of these devices. But as a potential buyer who has to spent his hard earned cash on these things I tend to trust people who themselves have spend their hard earned cash instead of just getting one for review-purposes.
The fact that these companies keep sending you their products (whether you return them or not is irrelevant) means that the people in their marketing department think it will sell them more product. That makes you exactly what I said in my previous post, a marketing tool. But I think at least a part of you already knew this because otherwise you wouldnt have reacted so fiercly to my previous post.
No shame in it though, keep doing what you're doing. I'll watch your videos regardless. I just don't use them as buying advise.

Is struggle a bit to see how the Insta360 Go2 is superior, especially with quite a bit lower resolution and quality. The DJI action 2 a case could be made due to waterproofing.
@@Dcrainmaker well...lighter, weatherproof & shockproof with plethora of lenses to choose from...and imo better to have crystal clear 1080p or 2K than some 4K with considerably more bulky design even when it's stripped like this.
Go2 i can put on any 2S btw and go through any obstacle. Try to do that with this. It would be bigger than a drone itself hahah
