I've searched high and low for how to do this and finally Google gave me this video. This is how the GoPro Hero 10 Bones is designed as well. It took me WAY too long to find this info and GoPro doesn't spell it out in the paperwork unless I simply overlooked it. Thanks for yet another awesome tutorial that was exactly what I needed and nothing more!
You can also trigger user mode just in the middle position. So when you pull the switch downwards it goes through it, but then stops at the end. That way whenever you move a switch from most downwards to most upwards position it will always trigger this mode and you can tell if it's recording or not just by looking at your switch position.
Also, it will be good to set PREARM on bottom switch position to get it in default position before drone armed. What you think? UPDATE: well, I've tried, its not working due to prearm should be switched somewhere out of prearm position before next arm...
I've added Hero 10 Bones to this video's title because the process is exactly the same for that cam as for any other Naked GoPro. Don't let the fact that I don't actually mention the Bones in the video throw you off.
Hey is this still applicable with the current version of Configurator? There's a firmware flashing options called "CAMERA CONTROL", so I'm not sure if I should be doing it this way or not still. Also, I have a hobbywing xrotor f7 with a specific pad for camera control. Thanks!
I requested that tutorial, thanks for delivering! 2 things i would like to add: 1. Put the mode on a button that bounces back if possible. Like the right shoulder button of a taranis 2. You can use a 3.3v microcontroller (3-5gram extra) to convert an arm signal to a button press to automatically record whenever it is armed. I did that sucessfully.
Check out GoPro Labs and using QR Codes to change camera settings. The ability to instantly change to your favorite setting by putting a QR code in front of the camera is awesome in itself but the "Motion Start" feature is priceless for FPV. Starts recording when you take off, stops when you land.
Done this with the explorer LR4 v2 so it triggers the runcam split 3 nano. Remapped all aux and freed up an aux to use as record & cam control. My radio is on opentx so used a combined aux and logical switches, I gave the switches a time of 0.2ms operation so it acted like a momentary switch. I compiled how to do it thanks to watching a few of your older vids - thank you for your service to this hobby x
I have an og Runcam dvr that doesn't have an uart on it, but the start/stop button on it connects signal to gnd. I just soldered a wire from button's signal pin to the buzzer pin on flight controller. The buzzer pin is the only one that switch gnd rather than signal on a flight controller. Than I now can start/stop recording on the radio using pinio beautifully! 🙌🏻🎉🚀👍🏻 In fact using this method you can turn on/off almost any device. You just need to figure out what are their power buttons doing (connecting signal to gnd or signal to vcc) to know where to put it on the FC.
Momentary switch would be my best friend here. Also, if you use open TX radios ( and maybe others too but I’m not sure) you can add an audio output from the radio when a certain switch is pressed. You can add a range in the controller to say something out loud when you activate/deactivate the camera switch. I personally use this for my horizon/acro/turtle mode switch because I don’t like the OSD having it up all the time when it usually is in acro
Hey JB, with a bit of mixer magic on the TX, you can make a switch act like a button press. Combination of mixer, logical switches and special functions With this you can start recording when you arm the quad for example :)
Something I would add to this is that if you are not using the DJI controller, you can use a momentary switch. Most of the other controllers only have one momentary switch, but you can turn trims off, which we never use for quads and use a trim switch as a momentary switch.
If you have the tx16s, it has two additional switch outputs available. I installed a push button for this. Placement took a bit to figure out. Before that, i had it on a three position switch with flight mode. Angle on bottom position, camera in middle, so when I went to land and used angle, it shutoff.
You can actually connect the GoPro to a vtx with an av converter chip. I can actually design a PCB for that, but I don’t know if it’s worth the hassle.
Why don’t you program the switch so that ist’s only in the middle position on? If you won’t to start recording pul the switch completely down and if you won’t to stop the put the switch completely up.
Something that could have been mentioned here for the Hero 10 Bones (may also be applicable to other cameras) is to check and set the pinio_config value to 129 for the appropriate pinio that you're using. The symptom you'll see on the Bones, if QuikCapture is enabled, is that the camera will start a TimeWarp recording as soon as you plug in a battery, but you can still control the camera after that.
There is even simpler way with exactly zero button presses! Gopro labs firmware allows you to setup automatic recording while the camera is moving (gyro+accel). So you set it up, power the quad, once motors start spinning the recording will start (depending on sensitivity - start threshold can be set very low so vibrations from motors will trigger it), when quad stops moving the recording stops, just take off the battery. You can configure sensitivity - how much movement required to start/stop recording and how much to wait after movement stopped before stopping recording.
I set this up with the SMO4K when I got it. The best way I found to set the mode channel up was to have the slider in the middle pos, so that as the aux channel goes past the mid pos to the bottom of the 3 pos switch it starts / stops recording. But since I can't reliably tell if the camera has started or stopped recording I've gone back to using the buttons.
You can add momentary buttons on the TX16s in the two open plugs and set this up with a momentary button (SI, SJ), you should do a video of that josh. You can set trim 5 and trim 6 as edge logical switches or just add some to the radio with drilling and adding a switch. Since they are momentary it would work like the button press.
Orqa has tried implementing this into their goggles. I can long press a button on the goggles and it starts recording on the GoPro and also gives you a visual key to show recording has started. Pretty nifty!
create Action and simulated switch in OpenTX. Switch sets 1s to HIGH and then to low when from arm=0 to arm=1 and the other way. Then you can arm, the simulated switch turns video recording on, disarm the same, turns video recording off?!
i assigned one of the buttons on the back of the tango2,works great, thanks.just want to point out,i dont know if its just me but with the gopro connected and powered this way,u cant connect to it via wifi to gopro quik or gopro tools phone apps plus this seems to bypass the record button on the geprc case so that doesnt work either.I had to connect the gopro direct to a battery to be able to control and configure the gopro with phone apps.
I followed the procedure with a HOMFPV Wingsuit S (FC TRANSTECF7HD) using RX5 connected to a Bec Iflight for Gopro 8 naked. When connect the LIPO the gopro led remains steady red and the gopro nn is usable. I also inverted (ON / OFF) the positions of the Aux but it doesn't go. Always fixed led and frozen Gopro.
This would be fantastic for my runcam split 3 or other onboard HD cams, the little red light in the corner is easy enough to see and not worry about if i am recording or not. But default settings is power on=rec and i definitely believe in Record everything and extra then crop later.. Having this ability has some plus side but just buy a bigger SD card and you're better off.
Hi Joshua Thank you for this tutorial it helped me a lot. it works perfectly when the switch is on the left (power on auto start). I connect the battery to my drone and the camera starts up. I don't like this mode because the camera heats up while the GPS finds the satellites. I use the SH switch on my T16 this which is stealth. The camera starts and stops recording perfectly. I press the mode or rec button but nothing happens camera does not start. I don't understand why it doesn't work. Thanks for your help.
Thank you, Joshua! Is there a module for a gopro 9 black that can do the same and maybe also remove the battery? And, why the DJI controller has a button that does not looks like an AUX and seems not useful for anything, maybe can be used for this? Cheers!
Hi, I’ve a Betafpv F405 2-4s AIO V3 12A flight controller. On CLI I put this commands: risorsa LED_STRIP 1 NONE risorsa PINIO 1 A08 set pinio_box = 40,255,255,255 salva But I noticed that A08 isn’t PIN of LED STRIP but with command LED_STRIP 1 NONE now I can’t know what is the correct number to assign PINIO 1. How I can do to resolve this problem?🙏🏻
My naked GepRC gopro 11 can't start with the rec signal connected to the LED_strip pad of the flight controller (Cinelog25), even after proper configuration following this great tutorial from JB. Without any REC yellow cable the Gopro is running totally fine.. Anyone experimenting the same issue ?
Is it safe to wire the voltage and ground wires to a 9v and gnd pad, even if something else is also on the 9v? In my case, I've already got a SharkByte VTX on my 9v pad and want to use that same pad to power the nekkid GoPro. If that's not ok, will the naked 8 work with a 5v output pad?
Super useful tutorial. Actually on my Jumper T18 I've a the perfect switch to control the gopro button. It is the SH that once activated jump back to the -100 position. Now I've a question for you: I'd like to play a track when the recording start and one when stop. Is it possible ?

Exactly my thoughts, but, do you know how to 1) read pinio state 2) output such status to osd over some variable, may be similarly to dysplay_name hack? I mean using stock betaflight, not patched. I would be so thankful if somebody can tell me how to do it.
All Labs enabled cameras, from HERO7 onward, have this function. gopro.github.io/labs/control/imutrigger/ You can also set the default boot command to enable IMU capture, so as soon as the camera powers up, it is looking for motion.

This could actually be really useful if you wanted to use your GoPro to take photos midair as well like a mavic (cos they're so damn expensive and slow ;). Just put the camera into photo mode before takeoff and use a momentary switch as your shutter button. I wonder if there is any way to trigger shutter mid-air without a naked GoPro??
Lo mejor es situar el switch en la posicion central solo, asi cuando quieras grabar, lo bajas y al pasar por el centro se activa. Y al parar la grabacion, subes la palanca y al pasar por el centro se detiene.
This is something I always wanted a tutorial for and now I finally got it!!! Thanks Joshua. To be fair though, you had already helped me set this up months ago through one of the superchats on one of your live streams! 😬 The only question I still have left over is for the SMO4K cam. What is the "Remote Power Cable" for (Blue Wire)? What voltage does it get hooked up to? I can only assume it is a power cable that allows you to turn on the camera with the record "button" (switch). Like when you press record on a GoPro when it is off and it powers on the camera and starts recording... right?
Hi Joshua, nice information. Would ask you something. Its possible to similarly control things like shutter speed or iso from the camera? Best regards.
can't you make it with a logical switches in Open TX so that when u change the switch position it only goes to the upper value in a auxchannel for a defined time and when u go back to the off switch position that it goes back to the upper value for the same amount of time. so when u cange the switch to the "record position" it always starts and when you flick it in to "stop record" position it simulates the buttonpress again?
Thanks for the video. And how to use the blue wire? My smo4k won’t power on after I solder just the yellow wire. I’ve tried this a few times exactly in a way you’ve described, and it never worked for me
SMO4k uses the blue wire for the power button. Wire it the same way but use pinio_box 41,42,255,255 and user mode 1 switches power; user mode 2 switches record.

can't you make it with a logical switches in Open TX so that when u change the switch position it only goes to the upper value in a auxchannel for a defined time and when u go back to the off switch position that it goes back to the upper value for the same amount of time. so when u cange the switch to the "record position" it always starts and when you flick it in to "stop record" position it simulates the buttonpress again?
Like this:
3 logical switches:
L01 a>x SB -1 Duration 0.5(or how long the press should be)
L02 a
Thanks for the video.
@@JoshuaBardwell where can i find user2 in modes i see user 1 but that pinio was taken on my fc?
I'm a little late to the party, about to strip an old 7 apart. Is there any way to get something on our OSD to indicate that's its recording?
No I don't think that's possible.
That’s awesome , thank You
Thanks again!
