I agree this movie was very original and I felt the concept was fresh and interesting. I want a sequel too, but they're usually too busy making 80's reboots. I admire the actor who plays Blackhat's character, especially in the role of Reaper in Doom.
It's definitely good but original? Eh... I dunno. I was immediately reminded of Warhammer 40k when it got to the part telling the audience that the church is the central oppressive government
Warhammer 40K is heavily influenced by much of Tolkien's works, and real world history had the church as the central oppressive authority for hundreds of years. So that's not quite a fair comparison. Priest is very much a cyberpunk inspired movie with heavy influences from a ton of other material, but it's no more or less original than most everything else. Everything comes from something, as one would be hard pressed to come up with something completely new, and most things are just twists of something already there into something else. Sadly, that twisting mostly just happens with remakes and reboots, and they don't even seem to aspire to be new or unique. That's one of the many reasons why Priest shines as something original.
Karl Urban played Blackhat and the only other roles which he did better are Dr. McCoy in the Star Trek reboots and, of course, Judge Dredd. He's been good in almost everything he's been in though.
@Wraithic Artistry My bad, although I haven't seen LOTR or Bourne Supremacy yet, & I don't know when or if I will. I should have thought to include Vaako btw
And we need a Dredd sequel NOW it was the best movie of 2012 and Karl Urban played the character of Dredd perfectly, never took the helmet off,Olivia Thirlby was great as Anderson straight forward bad guys v dredd bad guys die and no fucking little kids in the cinema.
And thus my list of movies to watch has gained another entry. I agree on your whole vampire rant though. Vampires should be bad-ass merciless monsters.
The Vampire Diaries was way better than any of the twilight films IMHO. They at least had a fair amount of human-slaughtering bad-assery to even out the soul-crushing mush (which they didn't rely on nearly as much, either)
I'd just like vampires to be interesting creatures, they don't necessarily need to be brutal or pansies. It honestly bores me almost as much to have that same "CHECK OUT THIS EVIL MONSTER WE'RE GONNA SET ON FIRE" trope. If a vampire is intelligent/sentient, why should it just be a murder machine? I really liked how they were portrayed in the Witcher lore. You had your ferals, you had your Machiavellian vampires, and then you had your benevolent vampires. They were all intelligent predators who possessed different outlooks on their relationships with humans.
Without a doubt one of the best movies I've ever seen. I worked in film for 6 years from My Name Is Earl to The Soloist and 100's of commercials. I was hurt by the reception this movie got. It was originally directed and had a great cast. Thank you for your review. Can't lie...I think Priest is one of the baddest super hero's ever. He's up there with Neo from the Matrix.
Gendy is a very talented animator and director. Nearly everything I've seen of his always won we over. And I love "Samurai Jack"! I hope he can finish it one day. Ooh, have you ever seen "Star Wars The Clone Wars"??? That was amazing!!!
I love all the smaller things you point out in the movies, like the vent that disappeared for the rest of the movie. Things like that remind you that movies aren't real life, hahaha. I am a gigantic fan of religious symbolism, and also vampire killing, so I should really check this movie out. I think a sequel would be nice because the concept is great.
clairvoyantPastry Thanks! While the movie isn't perfect, its a pretty darn good time. It doesn't follow the original series at all, aside from some of the names, but it is its own cool world. I wish they would have made another. Who knows though? I never expected Legion to get a TV series!
I loved this movie. It was a pretty much a post apocalyptic spin on The Searchers, with vampires instead of Comanche Indians. So many moments from this film homage The Searchers it was great.
I think it's more like comparing guyver the manga to the live action guyver 2 dark hero they're meant to be two different takes of the same story it's not perfect but it's a good if flawed movie on it's own. So in a way it's kinda like comparing apples and oranges.. well if you squint yours eyes a little even tho priest still is kind of a meh mediocre movie that's kinda flawed but also enjoyable in some small parts.
After seeing “A Knights Tale” in high school, I really liked Paul Bettany. I will honestly say, though, I haven’t seen as many movies of his as I should have. Ive seen “Legion” and of course the “Avengers” movies, but I passed on “Priest” because I thought it would be sub-par. But now knowing Karl Urban is in it, I’m down to watch it.
Came here looking after looking for any signs of Priest 2. You nailed it at the end of your review. If there can be no less than 5 Twilight movies, there should be a Priest effin' 2! And, yeah, John Wick was one of Keanu's best.
If you enjoy Gendy's work, you should check out the one-season wonder he did, Sym-Bionic Titan. It's a John Hughes flick mixed with a mech anime, potentially right up your alley. Also, it makes STUNNING use of A Flock of Seagull's Space-Age Love Song.
ZyxthePest Samurai Jack was completely ripped off of Frank Miller's graphic novel, Ronin. Go read it and then look at an episode and you'll wonder too why he wasn't sued for every penny he has.
I had the BEST time binge watching his series. the amount of detail he goes into during the reviews definitely sets him apart from other movie critics. I am always amazed when I watch his videos that doesn't have more subscribers.
so let me see it's Priest, Priestess, Priestor, Priestum and Priestly [no relation] haha! an enjoyable throwaway popcorn flick, wouldn't mind seeing the unrated version though.
Look, I love Let the Right One In. I think it is a magnificent film and truly deserves all the accolades it gets. However, when you ask any random person on the street what is responsible for the current vampire trend and they would say either Twilight or True Blood. Also, LTROI made 11 million worldwide while the Twilight series has raked in close to 4 BILLION dollars worldwide. In the video I'm not saying Twilight is better just that it is incredibly popular.
I remember seeing trailers for this and thinking it looked cool. The concept seems interesting, and I like how they worked the cross into the weapons and whatnot. Honestly, I would've preferred if they did the whole movie in the animation style from the flashback. That would've been kickass.
Just saw this darn cool movie. I think the last kill that Priestess did when attacked on the rails by the familiars (9:30) would've been perfect for a Mortal Kombat joke: "Fatality" immediately followed by "Flawless Victory". Good review though, as always =)
I loved the movie Priest. Best action/sci-fi/horror movie I have seen in many years. Loved the supped up bikes and cool weapons. Musical score was fantastic. Unfortunately, does not seem like a sequel is in the works. What a shame.
I actually had a lot of fun watching this movie. The Vampires had a lot of similarities with Guillermo Del Toro's "The Fall" vampire horror novels, and the Priests and Cathedral City reminded me a lot of the Judge Dredd movie.... NO, not the shitty Sly Stallone movie, but the newer one, that was criminally underrated, and completely fucking awesome. This movie wasn't nearly as good as the recent Dredd, or the Guillermo Del Toro novels, but it was a fun watch.
I liked the movie, even though the story wasn't entirely there. But it really bugged me that the guys in charge of killing vampires refused to believe the proof that they were minutes away from being wiping off the earth.
TheReal008Zulu that's because this movie was nothing like the material they claim the movie was inspired from. If you read the Manga Priest...u will understand why this movie failed hard.
it's rare someone like this movie... i like it i think one of my guilty pleasure movie.. glad paul bettany in marvel cinematic universe... he in deed bad ass actor!
My dad built some of the sets for Priest and it was the last movie he took me down to spend a day on set to watch them film before he retired. That day they filmed Maggie Q surfing her motorbike in front of a blue screen and jumping off for about 90 minutes. Then Karl Urban pinning Priest to the train car and taking off through the ceiling for a few more hours. I got to tour the hive and read the first couple arcs of the series this was "based" on, I went up to my dad and said this movie has nothing to do with the source material, he shrugged.
Many people here draw parallels to Dredd and Mad Max, and they arent wrong. But I also get a real Vampire Hunter D vibe from this movie, what with the Futuristic/archaic Post-apocalyptic style , the claustrophobic big cities, the Wild West flair and, well, not exactly the vampires but in VHD there are creatures which are similar. the sad thing is both zombies and vampires can be done very well, its just that we are getting so saturated with them that the good is getting lumped in and buried by the bad
This is the first movie review you have ever done thats not a Good/Bad movie. Its a great movie that just is not appreciated. Robot Jox,Leprecaun in space,Re-animator=Good/Great bad movies we love. Priest just rocks. But glad u did the review, one of your best ever.
the "jokes on him, gingers don't have souls" got me. LoL
:)
I'm a ginger and I know i have a soul...Well, I did until I sold it to Satan. (JK)
Where was Paul Bettany when they were casting the Hitman movies? :(
They do all the Hitman castings on opposite day.
Where was gondor when the westfold fell ?
I agree this movie was very original and I felt the concept was fresh and interesting. I want a sequel too, but they're usually too busy making 80's reboots. I admire the actor who plays Blackhat's character, especially in the role of Reaper in Doom.

Blech. Enough sequels! I liked this movie too but I'm fucking sick of sequels and remakes!
@Wraithic Artistry My bad, although I haven't seen LOTR or Bourne Supremacy yet, & I don't know when or if I will. I should have thought to include Vaako btw
You forgot that Priestess did all of this in high heels.
That's a sin *ding*
One of my childhood friends worked on most of the matte paintings in this movie.
maxwell Honack if you still talk to him (or her) tell them they did a great job.
Thats cool they nailed it!!
The thing I love most of this movie is the animated opening. Genndy Tartakovsky needs to make an independent series based on the opening alone.
Urban had mentioned a sequel possibly in the works, I hope it does
I heard they're doing a Mega City One TV Series.
And thus my list of movies to watch has gained another entry.
I agree on your whole vampire rant though. Vampires should be bad-ass merciless monsters.
I'm glad we seem to be past the Twilight phase and are returning to badass vampires again
Lost my shit XD

Can't lie...I think Priest is one of the baddest super hero's ever. He's up there with Neo from the Matrix.
Speaking of Judge Dredd...tha Priests in this post-apocalyptic world remind me of tha Judges from that post-apocalyptic world!
06:50 Priest: If you throw rocks in the air, you can climb them like a staircase.
Sonic Yep.
Super Mario: It's-a-true.
Isaac Newton:[Facepalm]
Hey, Legolas did the same thing in The Hobbit!
Gendy is a very talented animator and director. Nearly everything I've seen of his always won we over. And I love "Samurai Jack"! I hope he can finish it one day. Ooh, have you ever seen "Star Wars The Clone Wars"??? That was amazing!!!
It was pretty cool. Definitely much better than the other Paul Bettany pseudo-religious action-horror film Legion.

I loved this movie. It was a pretty much a post apocalyptic spin on The Searchers, with vampires instead of Comanche Indians. So many moments from this film homage The Searchers it was great.
While a fun and irreverent romp, it ultimately suffers due to a complete dilution of all the elements that made the manwha so amazing.
I didn't think I'd see you here
I think it's more like comparing guyver the manga to the live action guyver 2 dark hero they're meant to be two different takes of the same story it's not perfect but it's a good if flawed movie on it's own.

THE Super Mario sounds are priceless man!!!
Cecil all of your priest jokes had me dying! Always enjoyed this movie too.
Love that one! Planning on doing an episode for it at some point. James Woods was great!
just watched this tonight. pretty good. makes me think of Mad Max crossed with Dredd
I loved this movie and Legion.
Came here looking after looking for any signs of Priest 2. You nailed it at the end of your review. If there can be no less than 5 Twilight movies, there should be a Priest effin' 2! And, yeah, John Wick was one of Keanu's best.
Hey, that vampire guardian looks familiar.
Its PINKY from DOOM!
You kill me! I died when you flashed "pancakes"! Now all I will think of during that scene is Cabin Fever!
Drinking game: every time Cecil says "priest" or a variation thereof, take a shot!
Jedd Jong do you want people to get alcohol poisoning!
GoodBadFlicks YES!
GoodBadFlicks that wood be awesome but I'm a minor so no alcohol for me 😢
priest was a great movie I watch it over and over again I wish they'd make the sequel it deserves it
I enjoyed the film but the Comic is very different and SOOOO much better
Isaac Langan maybe one day they will do an adaptation of the comic rather than a reinterpretation
YES! we can only hope
GoodBadFlicks hahahahahahahaha
not in this America sadly.
dream theater did a kick ass song based on it though
May I say yours are the best edited, filmed, narrated reviews on the tubes. Passionate, in-depth and entertaining. Whew.. said.
Love this movie. I loved this movie as much as the movie Equilibrium. Both absolutely awesome movies.
I really love this movie, up there with Hellboy and Van Helsing (at least every scene without that one lady with the weird outfit)
Yeah, he does good work for a fucking thief.
The fuck are you on about?
ZyxthePest Samurai Jack was completely ripped off of Frank Miller's graphic novel, Ronin. Go read it and then look at an episode and you'll wonder too why he wasn't sued for every penny he has.
Except the part where Gendy openly called Ronin a massive influence on the series and said he's been a fan of Miller's for years. You're an idiot.
ZyxthePest There's a difference between being an influence and outright theft, and he' a fucking thief, so fuck off.
Def one of the best underrated vamp movies
You sure as heck have great taste in movies! This got you a new subscriber, now to binge watch!! FUN!!
I had the BEST time binge watching his series.
the amount of detail he goes into during the reviews definitely sets him apart from other movie critics. I am always amazed when I watch his videos that doesn't have more subscribers.
Yeah, I see people that don't put half the effort he does and have way more subscribers!!
That Super Mario joke... You sir, have gained a fan.
Soggy Dry Lake? Such a contradictory name for a place.
Spot on assessment.
Corcaigh Rebel thanks!
i think you have sparked an intrest in this movie good reveiw
this has pretty cool world building
warhammer 40 000
Nothing is better than Warhammer 40k
I have had this movie on DVD for like over a year now. Gonna watch it tonight.
The backstory comic book sequence in this is amazing , Ide genuinely love to see a version like that of this film
The animation sequence for this movie reminds me a lot of Dante's Inferno's...
so let me see it's Priest, Priestess, Priestor, Priestum and Priestly [no relation] haha! an enjoyable throwaway popcorn flick, wouldn't mind seeing the unrated version though.

Another awesome video. I really enjoyed this movie too. It was an AA B movie :).
HellFirecz thanks!
love the added super Mario bros. sound effects!! nice touch! totally unexpected
this movie was tight af. a new take on vampire creatures and continuous action
Just saw this darn cool movie. I think the last kill that Priestess did when attacked on the rails by the familiars (9:30) would've been perfect for a Mortal Kombat joke: "Fatality" immediately followed by "Flawless Victory".
Good review though, as always =)
loved the movie, I dig those weapons and hopefully there will be a priest 2. Thanks for posting this.
Thanks! We need a Priest 2!
Yes you may! Thanks! (now if you don't mind, go and tell others about the show) :)
Its cool, I know the feeling. Sometimes there are movies that I just don't get either.
It was a good flick. Saw it at home and enjoyed it more than most bigger budget films. Plus the open animation was wonderful done.
What a freaking awesome review, I love this movie also 👍
this is the type of movie review that i like.
not aggressive sounding but more on the sarcasm.
I loved the movie Priest. Best action/sci-fi/horror movie I have seen in many years. Loved the supped up bikes and cool weapons. Musical score was fantastic. Unfortunately, does not seem like a sequel is in the works. What a shame.
Dude I love your videos! Great takes!

I love this cast.
Dude, this movie is freakin amazing. very underrated movie.
I remember seeing this movie and the entire movie theater was completely empty. I enjoyed it and didn't understand why this movie didn't do better.
Its odd seeing this movie here. This is supposed to be Good Bad Flicks, not Good Good flicks.
priest is definitely bad. in a good way...
I loved Priest. I've watched it several times and it just keeps being amazing!
that movie was shit.
I thought I was the only one who outright loved Priest. Good to know there are others like me!
There will always be fools who love crappy movies.
He's very likeable and a solid lead. Hopefully he'll find that elusive breakout role.
Thanks for going back to the original theme--Love it.
Agree completely. One of my favorites.
I often check the internet to see if there will be a priest 2 absolutely positively one of my favorite movies
Your review is completely on point! I consider this a hidden gem of a movie.
it's rare someone like this movie... i like it i think one of my guilty pleasure movie.. glad paul bettany in marvel cinematic universe... he in deed bad ass actor!
This move looks AWESOME!
My dad built some of the sets for Priest and it was the last movie he took me down to spend a day on set to watch them film before he retired. Liking Priest? Obscure Spawn and Judge Dredd references? This is the perfect youtube channel.
Oh god, I don't want to have to watch that again!
Though its also possible that Vampire Hunter D was a slight inspiration to the original Korean comic...
I forgot how much I enjoyed this movie. A Blu-Ray I need to pick up.
He was fantastic in A Knight's Tale as well. Everytime I watch that movie, as cheesy as it is, he gives this one line and i burst into tears.
"And you? You would see me run as well?!"
"Yes. I wish it, too, with all the pieces of my heart,"
This is one of the best youtube channels by far
Thank you!
I’m going to have to give this film a chance, it actually looks a LOT better than the ads had led me to believe. (Which is why I skipped it back in the day)
Loving this channel after finding it. Keep it up!
Sorry to hear that. I loved it but I know a lot of folks who just didn't like it at all.
I think you'd like the movies by Tarsem Singh, the man is an artist with a camera. Don't know about Mirror Mirror though, but it got best costume design for Eiko Ishioka, who worked on Tarsem Singh's films till she passed in 2012.
ichigofluff666 I'll check them out thanks!
Very different from the comic, but not bad. At least it wasn't like The League of Extraordinary Gentlemen film.
I really thing that Priest and Legion should have been part of a trilogy.
Timeline :
Legion-2nd movie-Priest.
Legion as utter evil has been unleashed. Villain :an angel.
2nd movie as aftermath civilisation is still holding up, villain could be any evil mythology you could think of,plausibly a female one.
Then Priest.
Yeah I somewhat agree even both have the same actor in each one and all stem from religious subjects
For some reason I get this movie mixed up with Legion in my mind..
Great movie, saw it with my girlfriend soon after it came out. Totally agree that it deserved a sequel. You really do it justice in this review
Great film. Thanks for covering it.
I didn't like Knights Tale the first time I saw it and have been meaning to give it another go.
In a good and just world there would've been a trilogy for this. It is a really entertaining movie. Paul Bettany kicking ass and taking vampire names.
:3 Can I keep your voice box, humor, and optimism? No really, every review has been thorough and entertaining. Analytical and open minded. Keep it going!
Thanks! I've had numerous requests for ringtones but never one specifically for my voicebox lol :)
Because a voice box is forever. >:D Useful for skits.
LOL @ "Mister Hat"
Gotta say, awesome to see Mr Hat in an action role :)
the sad thing is both zombies and vampires can be done very well, its just that we are getting so saturated with them that the good is getting lumped in and buried by the bad
I don't know what happened either. A shame, there was so much franchise potential.
This is the first movie review you have ever done thats not a Good/Bad movie. Its a great movie that just is not appreciated. Robot Jox,Leprecaun in space,Re-animator=Good/Great bad movies we love. Priest just rocks. But glad u did the review, one of your best ever.
definitely had elements of Judge Dredd in there. Its a cool action film that was a good set up for something bigger. A shame it will never happen.
Visuals were stunning
saw this recently an its fantastic. If my local priest was like this I'd go to church every single week
This was such an amazing underappreciated movie
