    WHAT IS TALK HEATHEN?
Talk Heathen is a weekly call-in television show in Austin, Texas geared toward long-form and on-going dialogue with theists & atheists about religion, theism, & secularism. Talk Heathen is produced by the Atheist Community of Austin.
Talk Heathen is filmed in front of a live studio audience every week at the Freethought Library of the Atheist Community of Austin.
The Atheist Community of Austin is organized as a nonprofit educational corporation to develop & support the atheist community, to provide opportunities for socializing & friendship, to promote secular viewpoints, to encourage positive atheist culture, to defend the first amendment principle of government-religion separation, to oppose discrimination against atheists & to work with other organizations in pursuit of common goals.
We define atheism as the lack of belief in gods. This definition also encompasses what most people call agnosticism.

Having no religion does not make you more resistant to existential fear. I would even say that its more likely as many find comfort in religion when they are in crysis or seek way to not fall into it. It does not make it true, but for many it makes this easier by giving answers.

When Albert asked what atheists believe in, my first response was "nothing". But I thought about it and came to the conclusion, that I, too, have a firm believe, meaning that I trust in something that I cannot prove. And that is, that doing good things will make the world a better place for everyone but also for me. I believe, that my kindness will sort of echo back to me. And thus far I wasn't wrong with that. But I don't need any religion to tell me that.

    • @cy-one

      I'd say that's not a belief, but evidence-based.
People doing good things will make the world a better place. That's just logic.

I don’t have a belief like the religious have a belief. I don’t believe in things I cannot observe, measure, or independently verify. Scientists continually provide evidence for all of their claims, which makes their claims easy to believe because science doesn’t hide anything or make up BS stories when asking for evidence of the claims.

    "Ate a man once."
    "You ate someone?"
"Just a leg. In a siege."
    "That's horrible!"
    "Not with mustard."
I have cats and eat bacon. Not only that, I've raised and slaughtered a pig myself. That pig was the fattest, happiest, most frustratingly crafty and smug little bastard I've seen in a long long time. It had a good life which was ended quickly enough that he probably didn't even have a chance to realise it was happening. Locking a cat in a crate is harmful. Locking a pig in a crate is harmful. I would avoid eating a cat as much as I possibly could due to sentimental attachments to other cats.
To be fair, I was a bit sentimental about the bacon also. And having raised calves and cows for butchering, I've had the same issues. One of our ways of dealing with that was to swap with a neighbor. Sure we know that the cow is going to be killed, but we knew that from day one also. And again, they had good long lives breaking fences and generally misbehaving. Boxes were not involved.
I know of another family that reared three pigs for the table. They had young children who played with the piglets, and knew it might be an issue later. So they named the pigs Breakfast, Lunch and Dinner. Animals were very well treated. Sure their lives were only about two thirds as long as they might have otherwise been, but they only existed in the first place due to the farm also. There's also a case to be made that two thirds of a fantastic life is better than all of a short hard brutal life that it might have otherwise had as a feral animal. Or even a long hard brutal life spent mostly hungry and constantly in fear of not finding the next meal..
Yes it's a bit uncomfortable, but not horribly so. Besides, several animals that turned out to have an excess of personality ended up dying of old age. Ever seen a black cow turn grey with age? Damn thing would come when you call and lead the others around. Hell, we treated her arthritis. Proper farmers DO care for their animals. It's battery farms and mass production in the name of money that are where problems are.

Less than that of a human, but still worthy of moral consideration due to their ability to experience emotion and subjective experiences. If companies treated cats or dogs the way we treat pigs and cows, people would be burning slaughterhouses to the ground. Finding refuge in delusion is the reason quite a lot of people go to church.
    Finding community is another.
A discussion is to be had as to whether either is harmful to the individual or to society as a whole.
Does it depend on what's taught in the church, and what the accepted norms of the community are?

Be a nice refuge, be deluded, have a community. Fine. But stop there. Your beliefs are your beliefs. But keep your dogma out of government, law, and society at large.

      Preaching is the problem.
Outsourcing your decision making is the problem.
      Hierarchical structures are the problem.
Churches are not a good community. You can have community without the undue influence of a creed or leader.
