Japan's $20 Billion Dollar Floating Airport Is Sinking

  • Japan is filled with a plethora of expensive and innovative engineering marvels, but not all of the country’s major infrastructure projects have gone according to plan. The Kansai International Airport might be one of the biggest blunders in Japan’s engineering history. It’s built of reclaimed land in Osaka Bay, and it’s sinking into the water. Engineers always expected the island to sink a bit, but they seriously underestimate just how much the airport’s artificial islands would sink. By 2056, some experts believe that the airport will reach sea level, which will pose a significant risk to the airport terminals and runways. So far, engineers have come up with a few innovative solutions to slow down the sinking, but these are just stopgap measures. The airport might continue to sink for 100 years or more, but if the speed of sinking accelerates the airport will likely have to be abandoned. Construction of the Kansai International Airport began way back in 1987, and the project was originally supposed to cost about $8 billion. However, the total cost to build the airport has since skyrocketed to $20 billion because of all the costly repairs. Iron plates under the foundation and a stronger seawall are two of the ways engineers are improving the Kansai International Airport. These measures should slow down the rate at which the airport is sinking. Here’s a look at Japan’s $20-billion floating airport and what’s being done to stop it from sinking. Keep watching to find out more about the Kansai International Airport.

The same story about the sinking "Kankuu" (as Kansai airport is known locally) gets recycled over and over again. It sinks a little and the engineers come up with something. It was too politically insensitive to build it on land. Look up the building of Narita airport before the 1964 Olympics for a much more interesting if not heartbreaking Japanese airport story.

It's a terrific airport and it is so easy to get to by train, bus or car. I had heard it was sinking but didn't realise just how rapidly. Too bad. As the narrator mentioned, it was built in the bay because there is really no space for it on land nearby. Japan is extremely mountainous and most people live in the plains which are very crowded.

Another big factor is that they wanted it to be able to have a 24 hour non stop operation which wasn't possible with an inland option. Also there had been a great deal of protests from the Narita airport works and the land take-overs that it required, something they didn't want to deal with.

No ,the airport is floating it is supported by cylinders of concretes wich upsides down,,for example when you out an empty cup in water in upside down it does not sink first coz the air is trapped here

We can separate runway and make runway submersible when high wave days and float on top ocean when operate then each plane had a submersible hangar bay and escalator lift airplane up to runway or bring air plane down to hangar Bay..so less change of being atacked

Do you know what's even more hilarious? Back in 1997-2000, Japan had experiments and tests with a possible fully floating airport. They've built a 1000m Mega-Float floating airport model in Tokyo Bay. And in the end, they came up to the following conclusions:
-A number of programs were developed to design a large-scale Mega-Float airport taking into account of hydro-elastic response. Using these programs, test designs of an approximately 5000m long floating airport containing a 4000m-class runway were drafted.
-Programs were developed to estimate fluctuations in the radio wave of ILS and PAPI, which are caused by the minute motions due to hydro-elastic response in the Mega-Float airport. These were then analyzed using the 4000m-class test designs. In addition, through the inputting of the analyzed values into a Japan Airlines’ flight simulator, several active pilots made simulated landings at the Mega-Float airport for evaluation. The results of these evaluations indicated the hydro-elastic response have absolutely no affect on landing.
-Actual test take-offs and landings carried out on the 1000m Mega-Float in Tokyo Bay enabled various data to be collected and analyzed, but no noticeable difference to airports on land was recorded. Furthermore, the results proved to be even more successful when the pilots who participated in the take-off and landing verification tests also evaluated the Mega-Float runway as being no different to any other airport.
-The environmental impact of the undersea noise caused by the take-off and landing of aircraft was evaluated to be at a level that would not affect the habitat of marine life.

I'm no genius but why don't they just build a wall surrounding the airport, stopping the water from flooding the airport? I know aircraft land so the wall wouldn't suit them the best but they could extend the edges and build a wall far enough for aircraft to still approach aswell as the airport not to be flooded?
