I can 100% picture Whitesnake doing this song. I'm not being snarky about it either. I've just noticed that when guys don't recognize power ballads that are sung by women, you give them the male band that would have done the same song and they go "Oh. Yeah." I've used this method often with 80s Cher songs.
@ hevydavy , hey man I know they crush this song but just for kicks check out the original band that sang it , I Ten is the band and yes Heart covered it , I never knew this until only a year ago lol
@@tiacalhoun3841 I don’t care for Heart’s version of Unchained Melody. I’m partial to the original. You didn’t ask, but I also don’t care for their version of Stairway To Heaven. I like Heart, but I’m not someone who loves every song they perform.
@@wangtang7768 I saw them mentioned in another comment, but didn’t check it out until now. Interesting that someone else did it first, but unlike everyone whose comments I read under ITens version, I think Heart’s was much better. Theirs seemed kind of muted and boring. Heart brings a lot more power and passion to their version. I’ll stick with Heart on this one.
@@hevydavy yeah I’m not big on their Stairway to Heaven version either but I LOVE them doing Unchained Melody…u sound like my husband, he prefers Righteous Bros as well but did u know even their version isn’t the original???
Wow! First (and only) time that I've ever heard this song described as "sappy." Hey, everyone is entitled to their opinion. Mine: These two Hall of Fame rockers kick ass with this song! Powerhouse vocals NOBODY can match.
Wow. T is a tough cookie! I'm a man that absolutely loves this song! Ann's voice is one of, if not the best, in rock history! And even though she is dynamic in the early part of the song, when she emits that from-the-depths-of-the-soul wail "Alooooone" during the first instrumental break... she kicks it into total overdrive. I can not listen to this song without that moment giving me chills!
Saw them at the Royal Albert Hall, London and it was a decades long dream come true. You must watch Alone in Seattle 2003 live acoustic version and see true class
Quintessential especially, mid- late 80s into early 90s. Very Commercialized then vs the 70s. Like movie studios of old who molded many aspects of the groups to styles they utilize for acts and videos. The high reverb sound to recordings. Still no autotune or pitch correction a good thing. Still a iconic decade for music and so many genres mixing and experimenting despite it all. Acts could still arise in small radio markets getting airplay and discovered before national markets begin in the mid-90s to totally now. Now a elite group basically chooses what to promote and that becomes what we hear most.
"It was ok... it was sappy..." Girl lowers her head absolutely crestfallen. Plans for a great concert out the window. Hey, it happens. People like what they like etc. Good stuff guys!
I saw the band Heart in Atlanta around 1976 at the Omni. It was a great concert. Just to be bragging, I saw the Doobie Brothers, Santana, and Pink Floyd in Atlanta at the Georgia Tech stadium also in the 70s.
Saw them in Birmingham, AL about 10 years ago along with Def Leppard. Both bands were still kicking butts and taking names, 30+ years after they were in their heyday.
I can’t believe he didn’t like heart. I’ve never heard anyone listen to, especially this song by Heart, and go…… It’s OK. You cannot go wrong with heart. One of the best bands ever. I can’t imagine going to see them live. I know you’re going to enjoy that so much.
"Every group had a power ballad. It would bring the chick's. The chick's would bring the guys." I think this was said by Vince Neil of Motley Crue. It was a quote by a rockstar, anyhow.
That is a power ballad by definition: Hard rock band with a ballad that starts out slow and explodes in the chorus. Power ballads by nature are geared more toward women than men which is why they get released as singles (or did back in those days). Heart's core sound is hard rock with acoustic at the center and this song isn't representative of their sound. "Magic Man", "Crazy on You", "Barracuda", "Even it Up", "Heartless", "Mistral Wind", "If LooksCould Kill" "Bad Animals""Wild Child", "The Night", "Black on Black" are all more representative of their sound than the power ballads that got released as singles in the 80s and 90s
LOL. These girls came out swinging in the 80s. They went toe to toe with the glam metal of the day. It was very commercial and flashy which is exactly what was happening at that time. They kinda hated it but they made bank on it.
Nancy & Anne Wilson (Heart) were also in the studio when Alice In Chains recorded the Sap ep, so they are featured on at least one of those songs. The Sap ep is great. It has 5 songs. Got Me Wrong & Brother are 2 stand out tracks.
T would probably prefer more of the 70s Heart...in the 80s they were a little more mainstream poppy. Try Dog & Butterfly, Even it up, Magic Man or Crazy on You. 70s Heart was definitely more pure hard rock!!!!
The problem in the 80s is that Capitol would only release power ballads as singles save for an occasional pop-rock song like Who WIll You Run To. There was still some great hard rock (i.e. the title cut from Bad Animals, The Wolf, Shell Shock,The Night ,Wild Child, Black on Black, etc) but Capitol rarely sent them to radio so all we heard was These Dreams/Alone type stuff.
T, are you aware of how so many bands reinvented themselves in the 80's to remain relevant? Heart is a great example of this. 2 others that very obviously come to mind are The Doobie Brothers and ZZ Top. In almost every case I preferred the 70's sound but also in every case I still liked the 80's edition; just not as much. That is exactly what you detected here and I agree with you. I might like this song a little more than you do but only because Ann's vocals are so impressive. Watch some more of their early work; I'll bet you'll like that a lot more.
Idk if you know but Ann was recently diagnosed with cancer 🙏🏼❤️praying for her recovery. Idk if she’s continuing with her tour. You may want to check it out. I’m praying we don’t lose another icon
When a tune has heavy power guitar chords - a guitar solo - and a power vocal belting out… it’s a power ballad… done by R&R bands. A sappy ballad is like Air Supply, etc… where everything is soft piano, soft synths, soft background singers… etc. This is not that.
Sappy?! I'm a man. It ain't sappy. It's an over the top (melodramatic) 80s power pop rock ballad. It's iconic. It's not supposed to be sentimental. It's a rock song about desire and longing. But I appreciate his honesty.
I have to go with Tasha on this one. As much as I want to dislike Heart because of their politics,,, that girls sings her ass off on this song, like the guitars as well. IMO best female singer of all time
Love T’s honesty here! I personally love the song, but I also prefer Barracuda. What T is saying totally makes sense to me: the drama and the desperation is a little more pop-like in nature. And it makes sense that it might not be something he relates to.
This is considered the gold standard for hair metal power ballads by many. IMO it's got way too much synth covering up the guitars in the chorus so it needs to be remixed badly.
I really think T should hear crazy on you, more his style, and their 70s in my opinion was far better. Backstage 1977, Nancy kicks @$$ at the beginning of the video
LOL...😆😂🤣he's funny. "I was reacting to it as a man." Sounds like an excusive cop-out to blame it on being "a man." Because not all men are "shut-off." Doing so, shutting it down, is a reaction to feeling the feelings rise to the surface, but choosing to avoid them and shove them back down. And that's all you...and not for "being a man." And it is a power ballad.
Cool that you are going to the show but prepare yourself ... THIS is not the HEART you will be seeing. This is almost 40 year ago now. I'll leave it at that.
lol Tasha teaching T how to listen to Heart ❤️ 😂. You will find more songs in the catalog to connect to and rock out to, I promise! Magic Man should be next for sure!
The best female vocalists of the 70's were Karen Carpenter, Ann Wilson of Heart, and Annie Haslam of Renaissance. For Heart suggestions try Song Of The Archer, Dog & Butterfly, Mistral Wind.
I hope they do -- the videos I've seen from their shows so far sound like Ann is really struggling. I've seen them so many times that I might be expecting too much, but Ann's been struggling on the older Heart songs since 2016, she tries to sing them in the original key but she doesn't have the high range anymore. She's still phenomenal, but I wish she'd quit trying to sing Crazy on You and other songs in their original key. She's the GOAT female hard rock singer and I'm afraid she's going to damage her legacy.
@@k.wilkie3814 I agree with you to an extent. Except, I would be a little more harsh towards describing Ann's recent live singing abilities. The last 5 years, or so, have not been very kind to Ann. But, hell! The woman is 73 years old! Aging takes it's toll on everyone. At 62, she delivered the greatest performance of Stairway To Heaven in history. Does her recent vocal issues change my opinion of her? Not in the slightest! As far as I'm concerned, she's still the greatest female rock singer of all time. But, I'd strongly caution people going to their concert to lower their expectations.
Please keep in mind, Heart has been around for over 4 decades so if you really want to see them, don’t miss it again, because you never know if they will come again.
