Hint: You can tell whenever Bear Hugger is going to trick you with his bear hug/ catch and release, when the squirrel is out or not. If the squirrel is out, he will trick you. If not, he is gonna do it.
The issue is the tell is so minor compared to others in the game, and being uncomboable means you have to look for those minor tells many more times than against the other boxers. This is the worst fight in the game by a long way, which is a shame, since title defense breathed so much life into the other fights while making this one just an irritating mess.

The conventional wisdom says to end this fight as quickly as possible because Hugger becomes increasingly unpredictable the longer you fight him. However, I found the safest way to do it was simply to learn how to dodge all of his attacks (which, unlike Khakis, I do in practice mode) and only farm stars off his taunt and the fake bear hugs (i.e. the things that can't hurt you if you scuff it). Doing this, I ended the fight deep into round 3 having eaten zero out of his 34 punches. Such an endurance strategy works well for two reasons. Firstly, he doesn't have any punches that are nigh-undodgeable by reflex like Sandman's overhead (or even TD Glass Joe's jab), the closest being his own fast overhead, which he doesn't even use that often, generally favouring his much easier delayed overhead instead. Secondly, compared to most TD boxers he throws _very_ few punches in total between all the heavily delayed attacks and the fake bear hugs that all take precious seconds off the clock, averaging just under 13 punches a round compared to about 20 for Von Kaiser and King Hippo, 25 or so for Glass Joe, and a monstrous 45 for jab flurry master Piston Hondo.
Actually, there’s a trick to it. There’s an audio cue to let you know to spam 1 & 2 for Little Mac to recover from being KO’d or TKO’d. The crowd will go wild when Mac gets KO’d or TKO’d. Spam 1 & 2 and then Little Mac can recover.
i feel like bear hugger's td fight was kinda sloppily done. they gave him some delayed attacks, and the squirrel.. exists? but its more or less the same, the star punch gimmick is neat-ish tho
You're not really fighting Bear Hugger in this. You're fighting the squirrel and his human companion. Hence how 3-star punches are instant knockdowns, and that you KO/TKO the SQURREL first to win the match.
