      In Japanese sports events such as this, it’s actually customary to look your opponent in the eye while bowing when you’re in very close proximity. Partially for the reason of - they can literally just punch you as hard as they can if they were an asshole. If you were on opposite sides of the ring, or the fight hasn’t started as we saw in his intro cutscene, you would bow without looking them in the eye.

    If I recall, the "mother's milk" line is used colloquially as "you have the strength of a child, and should eat like one". It doesn't make a lot of sense in English, but in many nations adults don't consume a lot of milk (Outside of used in recipes sometimes), and it's treated as baby food. • @revenevan11
      @revenevan11 3 роки тому +783

      Agreed, I also think that a person being "a glass jaw" is a character archetype or trait or whatever, and Joe is also a generic enough name that it's used as an improper noun sometimes like John is on occasion in English, so it's correct in a way for him to say what they translated as "a"
      Also I'm pretty sure that the French use je suis sometimes in situations where it isn't technically grammatically correct, just like every language in the real world 🤷‍♂️

    3:38 I actually have an Idea for why he yells "Combat Boots!". The german word for glove is Handschuh. A compound word, meaning "hand shoe/boot". So this line would be a genius pun, because he is wearing two different types of combat boots.

    • @overlordalfredo
      @overlordalfredo 6 років тому +141

      Neat idea but I don't think this is the case.
      German military combat boots are famous for excellent quality and a lot of German soldiers define prestige and discipline over the shape and model of the combat boots they are wearing.
      *Literally you spend about 1/4 of your base military training in germany cleaning your boots!* - especially infantry units need to have shiny boots even when having an inspection in the middle of a combat training... ridiculous, but no joke!
      So the reason for this battle cry is most likely just the pure pride for having nice and clean high value combat boots.

    I'm French Canadian, so here's a fun fact:
    Glass Joe claims to be French (as in, from France) but his accent is a dead giveaway. I put him south of Montreal, sure - but about an ocean's width away from Paris. He sounds the way a lot of Quebec's professional dubbers tend to sound, seeing as I was practically raised on Hollywood movies dubbed in Quebec's take on what you'd call Received French Pronounciation.

    I am Japanese.🇯🇵
    Piston hondo says Japanese proverbs at intermissions.
    I will try to explain.
    ①「心頭滅却すれば、火もまた涼し」
    (If your head and your heart are at peace , even a fire stays cool. )
    One way of holding one's mind is to stop feeling any pain.
    ②「肉を斬らせて骨を断つ」
    (Let your enemy cut your flesh and you will break his bone.)
    A metaphor for inflicting a greater blow on an opponent while being prepared to hurt yourself.
    ③「虎穴に入らずんば虎児を得ず」
    (If you do not enter the tiger's den , you won't catch his cubs.)
    It means that in order to acquire a tiger cub, you have to take a risk in the cave where a tiger lives, so unless you take a risk, you cannot achieve great success or achievement.
    It is a proverb of similar meaning to 『Nothing ventured, nothing gained.』
    ④「勝って兜の緒を締めよ」
    (Keep the helmet of victory fastened.)
    It means that if you win a battle and take off your helmet with a sigh of relief, the enemy will not always attack you, so even if you win, don't let your guard down and be more careful.
    It is a proverb of similar meaning to
    『Don't halloo till you are out of the wood.』
    I hope it will be helpful to you.
    Thank you for reading.

    From what I've heard, looking up while bowing is a sign of disrespect, so the meaning completely changes from Honda showing respect to Little Mac to Honda being an unsportsmanlike bastard.

    • @Spanishinquisition98
      @Spanishinquisition98 6 років тому +60

      In my karate classes, we were always told to look at our opponent as we bowed. From what i was told, its to avoid the risk of a sneak attack because you can now see your opponent instead of the floor, which if its true is ironic in hondos case as thats how you get a star off of him

    • @SuperLlama42
      @SuperLlama42 6 років тому +94

      That was basically the reasoning I heard for why it's disrespectful. It's basically "You are my honored opponent and yet I don't even trust you enough to take my eyes off you for a second."

      It’s a nod to samurais in history. Simply put honor was something that was so out of character it’s hilariously baffling how it got attributed to them. Traditional bowing was a good way to get your head cut off by samurai so people looked up to be sure they weren’t essentially committing suicide because of their good manners.

      He only looks up in Title Defense. In Contender, he bows facing down every time, and you can get a star for punching him when he does.
      In Title Defense, he realizes that YOU’RE the unsportsmanlike bastard, so he looks up at you when he bows so that you can’t sneak attack him like an asshole.

    Pretty amazing that it still looks good today. Also your Hindi translations are spot on. To give context to the last one (the questionable one), it is a pretty common line they speak to taunt during fights (since ages).
