A good example of thoughtful implementation could be used in an open world car racing game such as Need For Speed or The Crew. Companies could pay the developer to include things such as billboards are realistic store fronts in the game. Eg a Coca Cola billboard or a realistic looking McDonalds restaurant or Starbucks that you drive past in the game. Not only does it serve as an advertisement but you could argue that it also makes the game more realistic for the player as they are seeing real world brands instead of some generic billboards and buildings. Some current games even have mods that insert real world branding into their games to increase immersion - eg the gas station mods for Euro Truck Simulator 2.
Great video Jahlon. I've casually played a MOBA on my iPad for several years, I would say, shockingly, I've played it more than my PC games. 2 main reasons. 1: My wife appreciates that I'm not holed away in my PC room. 2: I grew up on consoles so the controls feel more natural than mouse and keyboard.
So the sad part is that I played a mobile PC port game for 21 days before I hit the mandatory pay wall. Now, when I say mandatory I really do mean mandatory, unless I want to log in and get rewards and wait a few days to grow power. Sadly, at first I thought this was terrible, but then I realized that many times in Open World MMOs with gearing treadmills, you wind up stuck with gear until running a dungeon 5-10 times to get your gear set.
Excellent video on this topic. I didn't think you could talk about mobile games without saying the word "gatcha" a single time LOL. But yeah, I heard the same thing on Asmon's stream today when he was reacting to a video. For me, subscription fatigue sets in with anything outside of an MMORPG sub. I just use another person's Amazon account to order stuff because he has prime so I don't have to pay for it LOL. Not subbed to anything else because I just game. If I want to watch a sporting event or an anime series, I know how to do that for free. Also, unfortunately I don't think Asmon will react to this because it's almost a 25 minute video lol.
There is no acceptable implementation of ads in a game I paid a "box" price for.. and I wouldn't tolerate ads in a f2p desktop game, either. I despise predatory monetization, and am one of the (relative) few who will choose to not use a service, if I can't either: pay a reasonable amount to remove ads, or use technological means to avoid them. The flip side is I will (and do) pay a sub and/or pay a box price for games that do offer what I believe to be good value/fun for my money.
It's not your grandmas playing Candy Crush, and people just having short attention spans. It's the Hearthstones, the Mobile Legends, the LOL Wild Rifts, the Yugioh Master Duels, the Minecrafts, the Genshin Impacts, Roblox, Fortnite etc. These games are capable of not only being played in spurts, but in long sessions too. Mobile phones are also an excellent emulating platform for your PSP, GBA, NDS and other console platforms. Not everyone owns a PC, and I couldn't game on a PC here in Asia where running my gaming PC on a hot day will make me feel I'm inside an oven, not to mention the power costs.
That is very true, especially about the emulating platform for PSP and other old school hand helds. Your phone has way more power than those old systems had, and better graphics processing as well.
No it's not "Grandma playing Candy Crush" ..... It's obvious why mobile gaming is so big, there are a LOT of mobile devices out there compared to gaming rigs/gaming laptops, and even consoles. I would be willing to bet there are no gamers out there that started on console or PC, who made a decision to move to 'mobile gaming'.
I gamed on a PC for the longest time in PC Bangs around here in Asia in my childhood. I even have a full PC Setup that I only use to play Monster Hunter with my girlfriend but that's much about it. Most of my buddies transitioned to mobile because of the unbearable temperatures around here, and the economic costs of getting obnoxious electricity bill while running an airconditioning on top of gaming on a PC. Forget even the impracticality of travelling to a PC Bang. Not everyone is into AAA titles. And AAA titles have been notorious for mobile-game-esque predatory schemes on consumers just as much anyway. I wouldn't turn on my PC just to Play Master Duel, Genshin or Hearthstone. I can run whatever handheld console game I love on a mobile phone. It is what it is.
Mobile is king, mobile wont go anywhere. But that doesnt mean i need to like the king or think that people that enjoy the king are smart or have valid opinions when it comes to games.
The PC gaming and Console gaming audience are not an overlap with mobile gamers. I know tons of people who only play games on mobile - and those are the ones that actually spend money on them. I don't hate mobile gaming because of the platform or the outreach... I hate it because of the predatory practices targeting kids and whales - it's incredibly unethical. Not to mention... 99.9% of mobile games... are horrible games.
@@ParadoxGamingNetwork That's what happens when you target 12 year olds indiscriminately. You kind of have to be a bit of a nerd to like "gaming" but every kid has a phone these days. It's almost like unless targeting children with addictive gotchas, ads and microtransactions is systematically banned this situation will continue to get worse.

Yes I could 100% accept this. After all, it happens in movies and it isn't intrusive.

Yeah sadly it is a 25 minute video. I was going to shorten it up, but sadly part 1 and part 2 videos don't do really well.

Yeah the sub thing is something I'm currently digging into. I respect the idea of subscription fatigue, but I just don't know how valid it is.

I remember a while back when Candy Crush got factored in and so many people were mad. Like Grandma shouldn't be answering gaming surveys.

Rational as usual, thanks.
Now just trying to figure out how to get my videos in front of more people.
Mobile is king, mobile wont go anywhere. But that doesnt mean i need to like the king or think that people that enjoy the king are smart or have valid opinions when it comes to games.
I think that's the slice that needs to be worked on. How to make all games (mobile or not) better.
I just feel pain thinking about (mobile) Game ads/monetization.
I can understand that. I feel the same way thinking about P2W games.

This is true, there is no overlap. Sadly, even PC and console combined only match mobile in numbers.
