You guys are hilarious! I'm over here in Atlanta, and have watched both sets of Hawaiian brothers, mck and crabb, for a couple years now. VERY exciting! I love the energy and competitive spirit you guys bring! Also, my brother's beard is down past his nips, so our family sure appreciates a solid beard! Keep up the great work!
What's funny is that Caleb Thornley from last weeks shout out lives in my town and he's progressed a lot this past year. Our city doesn't have AA or AAA but just passes from A straight to Open level (huge ambiguous gap). It's been cool hearing him reference your vids and jump up to open with us and become a more consistent, aware player this past year!
I didn't know where to comment for the ball contest, but this is more like a fan post. You guys are a blast to watch!

Another great video! Very smart to break down hitting into multiple videos. It's hard to explain all the specifics of an approach in video but doing these individual videos gives more time to explain each step thoroughly and also for the viewer to "digest" the information in preparation for the next video and put it to use in the real world. I have my first King Of Beach doubles final tonight and plan on using all of this info for a win!

I got a great advice for all of you learning the right footwork. I've watched this great tutorial a couple of months ago but still learned it the wrong way - even though I'm starting my approach with right leg I'm ending up also with right leg (causing wrong positioning, I'm right-handed and my right should is too close to the net, left shoulder in the back, totally oposite). The funny thing is that I've mastered this technique without the ball but when the ball comes into play I always do it the wrong way. It all happens too fast and it's hard to tell without someone filming you. BUT I'VE FIGURED IT OUT. The bros and Taylor tought us here to use 4 step approach and it's great but you have to start your approach JUST BEFORE setter touches the ball. When he touches the ball you already must have your right leg forward. So it's really 3-step approach counting from the moment the ball leaves setter's hand (please see the Batter's Box video: Riley there uses 3-step approach instead of 4! he stands in the batter's box and leaves it using sequence left-right-left). It might seem not that important but for me it made all the difference. My mistake was that I was starting approach JUST AFTER setter touched the ball, causing that I was already too close to the net and there was no time to make those missing 3 steps. There was only space for 2 steps, so for me in the end it was: 1(right)-left(2)-right(3). And again, it might look harmless but it's not so please remember: for this 4 step approach and right-handed hitter, when the setter touches the ball you've already made the first step which means that you right leg is in the front (now you're ready to leave the batter's box), then the ball leaves setter's hands and you have 3 (not 4) steps to make. Cheers.
I had the same problem, but now even when I start before the setter touches the ball I'm still having trouble on adding the steps along with having enough time to jump, although I'm really trying to mastery it. Also I need to work on my verticle SUPER badly.

Getting this footwork right is a game changer for jumping higher and hitting harder. Question for you both, how much emphasis do you put on strength training for jumping higher? Are you squatting a few times a week?

Great videos guys. The pointers are right on and were immediately helpful! By the way, I just realized that my hitting approach is goofy footed (left-right-left-right instead of right-left-right-left). Can you talk about the pros and cons of being goofy footed in sand? Karch was to have said that switching to being goofy footed on the beach made him jump higher, have better vision, and hit better cross court. If this is true, why aren't there more beach players who are goofy footed?

Super entertaining and really great tips as well.
For me as a right hand hitter on the right side, I like to make my approach perpendicular to the net. On my beach the wind often coming off the water means that after passing the ball I step to the left so my setter has an easier hand set and the ball doesn't get to my left side where I have a difficult hit. Also by coming perpendicular the line hit or line over shots are more accurate. I believe these shots are even more important at lower levels when the blocks are not as effective as at a pro level.

Did you guys think about opening your own MCK Beach Volleyball Academy? You are so good at what you do. I'd be the first one to sign up. It's almost impossible to find a comprehensive BV training programs in LA. A couple of coaches that still train go by just giving an individual class here and there.

Great video guys. Is there a particular starting point that you recommend for the 3 and 4 step approaches? Is it something like 10 foot line for 3 step and 12 foot line for 4 step?

But i have a small request: some really motivated players are a little bit smaller than others. The dear god just gave me a size of 1,66m - what a lovely gift ;-). My son and I went out yesterday to practice hitting, and videoed our session. When we got home and watched it back, we realized that both of us had our footwork wrong for right handed hitters (our approach was Left, Right, Left, Right)...what is the best way for us to correct it?

I wished I watched this sooner, I started like 2 years ago playing really casually and now I want to get better a lot. Unfortunately I did it all the way wrong (right handed player) and always went a big right step following a quicker left and than right step parallel to each other which will cause me a lot of time to get rid of.

Question: When you play at 4 (left) the steps are right-left-right-left. At the 2 (right) I guess is the opposite. But if you are right-handed doesn't this affect your body balance during the attack?
Left handed is: Left right Left right.
If You are not doing so....watch out!
How can i jump faster for volleyball
I see some players lift their feet up after their jump and somebody dont. Is there a technique for this? Lifting our feet obviously increases our hangtime... :)
If you think of our body as a slinky toy: imgur.com/gallery/GLJg82u .Gravity is not the only force at play. You also have the stored potential energy in the spring which is pulling the spring back together. This causes the bottom of the spring to move upwards at the same rate that gravity is pulling it down, making it seem that it just hangs there while the top falls down. The top being our hand.
