I play on the UK Division 1 team while my family and i are deployed overseas and this totally changed everything for me! I used to hit pretty hard but far away and now I can spike it down to the 10 meter line!!!! Thank you so much!!!!
I have experienced that a very common mistake is that the hitter does not have his/her left foot in front and the right foot behind to be able to turn their hip from back to front to strengthen their hit...good videos btw, maybe more slow motion would be helpful in some scenes too.
+biggestkkfan Thanks so much for your comment and more slow motions are definitely we can add because like you said it will help people to see the detail we want to emphasize
wut wut????? how do you even jump if your left foot is not in front( if you're not a lefty i mean) Like you legit can feel it's wrong when you jump that way. I think the most common mistake is the lack of practice thats it... The timing is really hard to learn for some other than that jumping with all your might left foot in front with your arm with the right motion should do the trick
WTFGAFS do you know why it is hard to hit with their hand extended all the way and have goofy foot work? Because they have terrible coaches and trust me. There are a tons of those coaches out there....and now when you try to fix it. Its not easy.
good stuff! pitching is exactly like an aggressive attack mechanic...the body, core, and torque are the engines; the arm and wrist are simply the steering wheel. love the angles to elevate highest contact point rather than just remaining square and flat with shoulders. cheers!
My goodness,, THANK YOU I feel so hyped for getting my overhand serve finally right, and I never really used my shoulders and upper body the right way. This video really helped, again, thank you SO much!
I have experienced that shoulder injury because I did what this video shows the common mistake. This video helps me a lot ! Hope I can see more videos about common mistake hitting motion!
train your legs, abs, and shoulders...there are a lot of video workout out there to train for vertical. Spend lots of time at the gym ;) and reap the benefit at the court comes playing time, it is a lot of fun.
I wish my coach taught this to me. He always said "hit at the highest point of your reach", but never explained how that is done. Now I have chronic shoulder pain because I swung down vertically for years and years.
This is seven years old....about how long I have been arguing with coaches to follow-thru "across the chest"... At our daughters H.S. I did an unscientific non-professional side by side hitting study, using the Boys baseball Speed gun... what ensued; When the girls followed thru across the chest...the ball was faster, and they said it felt like they were hitting the ball harder. One of the Girls (our daughter /DS /OH | 5'6" (yes; 5'6" OH (her vert. is amazing) follows through across the chest.. this also helps with quik line hits and doesn't hinder her ability to "go" short, to the 3M line. I implore you to break your young hitters habit of pulling the arm down her side. She is losing power and will have Scapula strain and shoulder issues... it is argued the Tennis server is the nearest to the VB attack swing... I think its a toss up from throwing a ball and Tennis. both, tennis and Base(soft)Ball finish across the chest...
I asked a collegiate coach a few years ago about swinging like this & he said it was wrong. He said the shoulders should be equal height & the non hitting shoulder should not dip lower than the hitting should. But clearly swinging this way allows for an even higher contact point, as well as involving the pectoral muscles to create additional power. As a volleyball coach myself, I teach your method all the time & the players continue to have amazing results.
Thank you for your wonderful Volleyball tip videos especially for a beginner like me in Volleyball. Keep up making more videos like this, it really helps us.
+Dwain Pablacio Thanks. Your feedback is much appreciated. I am running out of time to do these videos so comments like these make me want to keep pushing to get them done.
thank you sir, your videos are really helpful for me to correcting my mistakes especially while hitting the ball or spiking, when i started playing i had shoulder pain while hitting harder but your videos really helped me to correct that mistake very well. if you can post more videos on spiking section that would be more helpful.
Man! I was thinking about the strength of my hit yesterday and how could I improve it. I came to the same solution, about hitting the ball in more natural position for the shoulder, on the right side and not straight in the top (for the right handed). Today I typed it into youtube and the first video is telling me the same thing! Thank You so much, really nice video, I agree 100%! :)
Since you asked for suggestions in the video, I'd like to make one. I never played competitive volleyball growing up; no school, no club, pretty much nothing but backyard stuff during BBQ's and the like. I have been playing in coed leagues for the last few years and have a mean vertical according to my teammates. My mechanics have all been learned while playing. I really would love to know what drills or lone workouts somebody like me should begin doing to improve. What would you teach someone who needs to unlearn incorrect form?
+Fisticuffs Thanks for the suggestion. Breaking bad habits is very hard. When you play, you are focused on reading the play, reading the trajectory of the ball, getting your body behind the ball, preparing your arms to contact the ball...there is not a lot of room for thinking about you technique. When I was young, I fixed my hitting approach by doing it all the time and everywhere. I would do it walking to school, in my house (reaching for the ceiling with my elbow), as soon as I walked into the gym. I think that's the way to go. Think about what the ideal approach and jumping technique is and then simplify it into 3 cues that are super easy to remember. Then do as many approaches as you can while repeating those 3 cues in your head. You will be slow at first but the more you go, the faster you do your approach. You don't always have to jump 100% but the approach speed should be as fast as the space allows. Repeat, repeat, repeat...there is no secret...just repeat the right stuff though ;-)
+naqib zulkifli Thanks, I appreciate the feedback. I will think of a way I can make a video on that. In the meanwhile, watch this one, it might offer you some help ua-cam.com/video/xksBm0b0xR4/v-deo.html
Great tip bro! My 12 yr old daughter makes this exact mistake & I couldn't figure this out on my own. 4yr old video but still helped me help her. Thanks man
Hi, thank you so much for you tips. I am a setter in a high school level volleyball team and I'm having a hard time understanding how to give hand signals to my hitters. Can you please talk about them in the future video?
On a float serve you actually want to contact the ball a little lower, but further out in front of you. Curl your fingers back so you contact it with as flat a palm as possible. Toss with two hands, no spin, about 1-2' above the height of your head and pick a spot on the ball you want to contact. For instance, you can use the nozzle where you'd insert a needle. Lastly, don't follow through with a wrist snap or it won't float properly, you have to kind of pop it and stop the follow through on contact. Done properly, the float serve can dance all of over place and even fall out of the air.
i want to learn how to "dive", howto make a "fish", cause always when i try hurt my knees or my tummy, I try to put my legs on the air, but im think im a little bit scary of do it again and hurt me again, you have some tips to me? some tips to start make it corrects?!
Omg thank you I will definitely try this out in currently in tryouts and it’s been good so far i just wanted to start hitting down and fast thanks again
Is more angle nessecarily better? I have can get my torso more than 60 degrees from upright, and I can hit harder from that angle advantage as well. Only downside is that I don't really know where to go from there, as I can only hit where I'm facing because anything else feels a weird grinding in my shoulder.
You are missing several important concepts including the use of neutral wrist the fastest way to anatomically move your throwing arm (i.e., spiking arm) across the body.
Hi, I'm having trouble with hitting the ball down. My arm swing is right but I think it's something to do with my hands. Could you do a video on just hands? Should I keep them open? How should I curl them?
Hey, First off your videos have helped me a lot to improve my technics this last couple of years, since there was no one really good enough to show me and my teammates how to do things properly, so thank you very much :) Secondly are there any tips to help me avoid high blocks except feints or my obvious blockouts? Because i am a wing spiker but am only 178cm tall so kinda hard to get over blocks, so i either speed up the tempo or block out or fake, but it gets old pretty fast in a game with their midle blocker. I got a pretty strong spike and if the block gets late i can spike the ball almost on the attack line but if the block is there it becomes really tough... Any advice? Thank you again and great job :)
Any tips? On approach when jumping too early whe youre gonna spike, because i usually jump early maybe because im always excited to form my spike form, Or not looking the ball at all, because i eas focused on spiking i guess
As a beginner I keep spiking put of the court ! 🤔only way is if I consciously just hit with my finger then the hand .....am.I making contact too low on the ball ?
I don't think it's so much a "lean" by itself. The lean is a result of the torque which generates power. Hips & shoulder rotation into the ball as you described in the baseball throw example.
What is something I can do at home and in practice that will really get my body to adapt to this form? I picked up the bad habit you showed in this video and have been trying to correct it for so long but for some reason can't figure it out.
+Melissa Hill That is a good question and a tough one to answer in writing. I think what I will do is make a video on a couple of exercises people can do because I got it a lot. I'll get on it soon enough. For now, what I suggest is to take an elastic band and tie it to a post at your shoulder level. Grab the elastic band with your hitting hand and face away from where it is attached. Get into your armed position with your hitting arm higher and behind you. If it is your right hand, your right shoulder should be tipped down a bit (you do that by squeezing your abs on your right side) and behind you. Initiate your hitting motion by rotating your shoulders and squeezing your abs on your left side, this should tip your left shoulder down so that at the point of contact, when your hand is above and in front of your head, your left shoulder is below the right one. That's the position you want. Repeat the motion slowly with an elastic band until your core muscle get used to the type of abdominal contraction that is required to produce that movement. I hope that helps. Again, it's hard to explain by writing but I'll do my best to put out a how-to video on some exercises to do. Thanks for your question and good luck with your volleyball.
Hi! I am obsessed with volleyball! I want to go to the Olympics eventually, I have quite a small back yard and a trampoline. I was wondering if there was a way I could work on my technique etc, with limited space. Please help! I want to be better.
+Megan K Thanks for your comment! I can see that you are very passionate with volleyball and maybe this video can help (ua-cam.com/video/-Lz6h3sgUj4/v-deo.html). You can also do chinese chopsticks with your arms or check this video for good exercises (ua-cam.com/video/O5sPxlt2pOo/v-deo.html)

I've been hitting straight up and everytime I try to spike (Never actually had a good hit yet) When I come down, my shoulder is heading, specifically that bone.. So ima start opening up my arms and hitting it at a arched angle now
My spiking arm will always stay unextended which makes the ball to hit very late leads to failure of spike Tel me some drills which will help me to extend my arm peoperly to its full length and also to swing the arm properly The contact point is not achieved i hit the ball when it gets lower leads to hitting it to the net How to contact the ball at the contact point? Please help
I wanted to know how one could spike on his highest touch I do spike but on the contact of the hand and the ball my arm is leaned somehow which makes it too easy to block I thought if one could make a strong overspike it would be easier
I play varsity volleyball in high school I've played against people your height and the answer is yes but it is going to take a lot of hard work and a long time to reach the jumping height that you need
Too bad, too late for me. I could have used this 3 weeks ago when I had to help out as an outside hitter. As a middle blocker on my level I rarely hit hard. But training and playing as an outside hitter with the wrong technique hurt my shoulder in no time. I've actually learned it the "wrong" way, similar to what Andor Gyulai shows in this video ua-cam.com/video/8DmclwLNh_s/v-deo.html (following through on the same side of the attacking arm) If I should recover from my injury, I shall become the greatest hitter with this tip! Else I'll require more libero training tips :D Thanks LP!
+Recomification That's too bad. I know a lot of injuries happen because of bad technique, I'm sorry to hear it was your case. When you get better, make sure to follow that tip and you will see a difference for sure. Enjoy playing the game at a different position in the meantime. Thanks for the comment by the way!
When I hit, I always seem to hit the ball with the wrong part of my hand , like my fingertips or sometimes my wrist . How can I fix this?
Used to be my problem too. For me it was really about routine and hitting many many balls.
Make sure to practice timing

Any tips or drills on how to practice avoiding this common mistake?
Good explanation. It is a common mistake to hit the ball over the shoulder instead of hitting the ball accross the body.
Does this hitting motion also apply to a power serve or possibly a float serve. thx
+cityboyis2 Absolutely, it applies every time you hit, spike, serve a ball.
Done properly, the float serve can dance all of over place and even fall out of the air.

sir great video this will help me a lot
Hi, i just started playing Volleyball so I'm wandering if the same motion applys for serving the ball? Or is that different all together?
I don't think it's so much a "lean" by itself. The lean is a result of the torque which generates power. Hips & shoulder rotation into the ball as you described in the baseball throw example.
Can you give me some tips when I try out for volleyball?

Hello. can you make video about different kinds of set (like back quick set, running attack set etc.) and setters hand signal. please ^_^
+Avel Andrade Absolutely, my plan is to have an actual setter come and talk about different sets. Stay tuned.
any exercise for hitting volleyball ball like this ?
My spiking arm will always stay unextended which makes the ball to hit very late leads to failure of spike
Tel me some drills which will help me to extend my arm peoperly to its full length and also to swing the arm properly
The contact point is not achieved i hit the ball when it gets lower leads to hitting it to the net
How to contact the ball at the contact point?
Please help
Do you provide personal training sessions
Do you have any drills to practice this?
I wanted to know how one could spike on his highest touch
I do spike but on the contact of the hand and the ball my arm is leaned somehow which makes it too easy to block
I thought if one could make a strong overspike it would be easier
Awesome video!
Hi i like what are you doing very much !! well i have a question :
my height is 168 cm with a lot of jumping workout can I be a spiker ??
Wondering about it as well - same height, same question
I play varsity volleyball in high school I've played against people your height and the answer is yes but it is going to take a lot of hard work and a long time to reach the jumping height that you need
What should the techinque hand to hit harder
Too bad, too late for me. I could have used this 3 weeks ago when I had to help out as an outside hitter. As a middle blocker on my level I rarely hit hard. But training and playing as an outside hitter with the wrong technique hurt my shoulder in no time.
I've actually learned it the "wrong" way, similar to what Andor Gyulai shows in this video ua-cam.com/video/8DmclwLNh_s/v-deo.html (following through on the same side of the attacking arm)
If I should recover from my injury, I shall become the greatest hitter with this tip! Else I'll require more libero training tips :D
Thanks LP!
+Recomification That's too bad. I know a lot of injuries happen because of bad technique, I'm sorry to hear it was your case. When you get better, make sure to follow that tip and you will see a difference for sure. Enjoy playing the game at a different position in the meantime. Thanks for the comment by the way!
Get well soon
Video is really helpful, but how many times did he say "okay" ?
how short people can go for spike can make a video about that
Very good video sir 😎😎
