When I was a kid, we milked guernsey cows. We had several brown Swiss. They had high butter fat and produced more milk than the rest of the herd. They also had a good temperament. They were my favorite cows in the herd
Old cows rule! They're key to profitability.
Many years ago friends from Oseeo who had milking shorthorn, bought a Swiss at an auction. They pastured their cows across the road and the Swiss wouldn't go! They got so frustrated with her bullhead attitude they tied a rope around her neck, tied her to the truck bumper, tried to encourage her across the road, and she wouldn't take the brakes off! One would think by then she'd have just gone with the flow, but it didn't happen. So, on the truck she went.
Close to forty years ago we bought wood from a pair of bachelors who had Swiss cows, that they called "their pets". On the day that I stopped at their farm to talk about buying wood I found them in the barn. I have never seen such a herd of pampered cows! As we talked the brothers walked down the manger and every cow got some loving! Their ears were scratched, heads patted, words telling them what good girls they all were, and I've never forgotten that day. Well, the brothers were bachelors so they were the ladies of the farm!
I love your post!! If you love dairy cows, you have your favorite breed and that is the end of it. I was a Holstein guy and my cows were my babies, and pampered as well.
My aunt had a great mind, she could tell you what cow had what calf going all the way back to their first cows!! Guess that good ol dairy life is the way to live!!!!

My neighbors always had a few Brown Swiss with their Holsteins, i loved to see those calves, they looked like fauns. I love to watch your channel, it reminds me of my own families dairy in Balsam Lake, Wisconsin. It warms the heart to see your farm, and, see great animals, and, the wonderful operation you have.
Those 2 Brown Swiss Cows in the lot with calves nursing would make ideal family cows. Very tame gentle and healthy. The Gierok family knows the dairy farming and dairy cattle industry. Great hardworking family farm!
nice cows and calves. we had swiss and holestin. swiss/holestin cross had good luck with all them. miss them very much.
When I was born my Grandpa Wimer gave me two heifers. One beef a Hereford and a 1/2 Brown Swiss 1/2 jersey heifer. Dam was the Brown Swiss.. best milk cow ever. At his death we took her to my dad's oldest sister as her husband and she had a dairy. She remained there till ,14 years old and wouldn't breed due to cysts on her ovaries. She gave me 5 heifers , her first 5 ... Out of one of our Angus bull s. Start of my beef cow herd.

I grew up on a Holstein dairy (70's) and dad AI'd only, we never had a bull. I always liked liked the idea of crossing it up but we never did. Our cows weren't registered so it wouldn't have mattered much... at the end of the day if you think you made a mistake you can always invite her to the BBQ. He only ever had Ford trucks too... he knew what he liked I guess.
Having been pinned and rolled along our pipe fences in the catch pin by some of those big old Holsteins... I would lean toward crossing for more docility. I think a Shorthorn cross with Holstein would make a great replacement heifer. We had a double 4 herringbone parlor so uniform size was kind of important.
I also follow Trinity Dairy on YT and get a kick out of their herd. His wife loves dairy cows and she makes the call on what's in their herd. So they have quite a variety of breeds.
Your cows calves look great. Alot more to it than just feeding and milking cows. Have a great day.
Brown Swiss is one of my favorite looking dairy breeds.
I've seen a couple of Brown Swiss/Holstein crosses. They are always jet-black in color, and they are great milkers.
Beautiful cows and calves swiss bull calves always mad good beef to me but all along they are beautiful cows and very friendly 👍👍👍

Great history just like my farm we've had registered jerseys since 1930 here on my farm
I bought a heifer twin not knowing that she should not be fertile , well she was riding my angus heifer . I talked to my friend who is a dairy farmer and he said their is a good chance that she would be able to breed . He said 10% of them can. Great job I just have 2 bottle calf's , 10 Idaho pasture pigs , 27 piglets that we just had , 60+ chickens, 2 turkeys mom and baby and Friday getting 60 meat birds
We raise beef shorthorns. And a lot of our animals go back to Milking Shorthorns 3 to 4 generation's. The females raise bigger calves and they tend to live a lot longer than
a straight line beef shorthorn.
We had a cow live to be 17 years old. She had 15 calves! For me......The Milking Shorthorn influenced cows are tougher and built to last as a beef cow.

You can definitely tell the cow has had good nutrients and has been taken care of properly. 10 yes old and still has great structur and fill to her over all frame. You have a great feeding diet and it truly shows in your dairy heard. Great job to you and your family dairy. Great video as always
Years ago we used to buy week old bull calves to feed out from a neighbor. They milked about 350 cows and about 1/3 of the herd was red and white Holstein. The red Holstein always fed better than the black. They were more hearty and fed out more like straight beef cattle.

Fun to see someone that loves the livestock. Big dairies are 2 made 3 lactation and off to slaughter. Growing we had Gurnsey and Gurnsey Shorthorn cross. Great family cows.

I always figure 3 generations(about 10 years😐) to put into action a breeding strategy. Developing cattle you want is an act of patience. As an Ayrshire breeder, I think you should have some red white wandering your hills

I surprised you're not trying Jerseys. They have experienced the largest growth of any of breeds in recent years. Our family has had registered jerseys here in Canada for almost 80 years
I love the looks of the Swiss/Jersey cross. The crossing definitely creates hybrid vigor and a stronger animal. Thanks for sharing. It is quite evident that you take very good care of your animals and they look great.

Awesome cows! I’ve got a small herd of Jersey’s. . My standard Jersey is a real pistol but a great producer and excellent momma. Always wanted a brown Swiss but they’re not common here in nw Ga. Great video!

Growing up my dad loved his brown swiss. I have been surprised as im looking into getting cows of my own that i dont see hardly any farmers online with brown swiss. They were our most friendly, lots of milk and steers that still have a good amount of meat on them!
i miss my brown swiss cows!! i had a set of twins once a bull and heifer and i kept them and the heifer bred? so i kept all of them and many times they would not breed but in all my years i had a few

Very interesting video! I grew up on a dairy farm with an Ayrshire and Holstein herd. My uncle did some cross breeding with those 2 breeds. Breeding Holstein cows to an Ayrshire bull. I always favored the Ayrshires. Had an interest at one point in Brown Swiss. We went to look at a registered heifer calf one time but nobody was home. That was over 40years ago! Never did get a Brown Swiss. Good memories😀

We had Holsteins growing up and Dad always kept a couple Jerseys for the extra butterfat . Those Jerseys may have been small but let me tell you they made their own room at the bunk feeder. No Holstein ever got in their way when they were hungry and it didn’t care how much bigger the Holsteins were!

Great video as always, the dairy I worked for years ago had a few swiss, gentle giant's. They had a few that were crossed with Holstein. That they called brownais that were dark brown and had curly hair. Good milkers.

I had a lot of problems getting Brown Swiss purebred calves to make it. Seemed they had to convincd to live. I also found that I had only one heifer (free martin) every breed. But those that didn't bred, still made good beef. I found my NolsteinXSwiss crosses were some of my best cows. Wish I had tried some MIlking Shorthorn cattle.

My daughter showed shorthorns in high school and her senior year hers was soils white
We cross breed almost everything we never got some reason bred with Swiss. Might have to change that. In my experience when we would have twins, they reproduced twins. It became half our herd is a twin. We also had a couple red Holstein cows they were very very big and tall. Too big for our barn really. They both had bowed front legs. We eventually had to get rid of them. I concur with you about animal vigor in mixed breeds.
That is a nice looking cow or other looks really good too nice and pretty and clean we had a small Dairy so I appreciate small Dairy they produce the best milk in the quality of the milk is good I have milked out a lot of other places in the milk filter was really nasty and inside the BART tank you could see stuff floating your guys's milk is really good

Great video, interesting how you cross breed to mix things up and benefit from the hybrid vigor, another breed to throw in the mix(and you will know this breed as it comes from your home continent) is MRI, i think they would suit your system and landscape, gestation period is a week less than others, so easy calving. Thank you both for sharing your daily life on the farm.

Genetics keep your grade A’s Milkers at the front. Your spot on with culling out those that show poor health. Keep close to observe the healthy milkers will keep the herd health.
Every one around here calls the one heifer twin a free Martin. I’m not sure why that is actually lol we always preferred a good crossed cow !

We always had just Holsteins but we are currently working on having two different types of crosses in our herd. Holstein X Fleckvieh X VikingRed and Holstein X Montbeliarde X VikingRed
Can yiu guys do a video on your bulls? I think yiu are the only dairy I know of who still does live breeding. Everyone else does AI. I would love to see your bulls!

Winter Barn My Great-Great-grandfather had two barns for wintering. One barn for sheep the other for cattle.
During winter in the barn he would have chickens above the animals.
The chickens kept the animals quiet. (My thought was if the animals became upset, that would upset the chicken and the chicken would take a shit on the animals below.)🐓🐓

brown swiss cows that`s where you get swiss chocolate milk lol you boys are fortunate, your old man is a scarce breed you`d be wise to learn all of his quirks and tricks. Actually I think you boys are off to a good start, but don`t let this compliment go to your head. I do enjoy watching your videos, I use to work for the old farmer next door when I was a kid back in the early sixties and your dad reminds me of him, he also was very ingenious.
free martin! There is a way to check them, but I'd have to PM you on that! We had a brown swiss that had an albino calf! We spoiled it! you could get on it right in the pasture and ride her like a horse! How about lineback?
As I recall it once was all red and white before the black and whites came along I believe.
We've bred about 25 of our 400 cows to colored breeds consisting of lineback,normande,Guernsey,Ayrshire,shorthorn,and fleckvieh. We were unhappy with the fleckvieh, the Guernsey are good but take a little while to get going. Never had a problem with lineback
What think of Ayrshire? Was once numerous in New England.
Jersey attitude is what you're talking about with the jersey xbrownswiss. I love Guernseys but they are too big now and don't make too much milk. They also are hard to breed back. That's been my experience anyway!
