- Milking Cows on a Small Dairy Farm! Watch my father and I milk our small herd of dairy cows. First enjoy the stunning views of the herd grazing the rolling hills, as the sun rises! Then we get started in the barn. We are milking in a 40 cow tie stall barn, built in the 1920s. Currently the milking herd size is 47 cows! Enjoy the video, thank you all for watching!

Dairy farming the way it was meant to be. Cows on pasture eating grass, not on concrete 24/7. Thank you and God bless you for what you do!
I agree!!
Thanks Rich, God Bless!
the problem is......there are a LOT of needs for milk which require many large dairy farms in order to supply all the needs. When you have over 300 cows on your farm....not including the steers and calves.....there is no way to have all the cows out on grass all the time. You have to use your acreage to grow all the food that all those cows/steers/calves require. Usually they rotate them. Cows who have finished up the milk cycle until they calve again get to have a 3 month vacation outside until it's time to bring them in just before they're due to calve. The larger farms do keep their milkers in....however they provide clean comfortable beds for them that get cleaned every single day...along with the isles. They 'have' to keep them clean because if they don't the cows will get mastitis from laying in filthy bedding. All cows on all dairy farms are well cared for. Makes no sense whatsoever for a farmer NOT to take good care of his animals because his livelihood depends on it. So no need to 'dis' farmers who have their cows on concrete. That's just the way it needs to be in those circumstances.
@@Emg2463 I'm not dising a farmer that keeps his cows on concrete all the time . I know that they take good care of their animals. But it's a better life for cow to be out on pasture as much as possible. I'm more of a believer that the country would be better if the 300 cow dairy you used for example was 6. 50 cow dairys . I just never could get into that mindset milk more cows.
@@BuckeyeFan-ty4vr I hear ya....would be nice, but not practical since there are a LOT of uses out there for cow milk...and a LOT of people who buy it.
Cool that was my job washing the teats and my dad and brother milked sweet you guys bring back so many good memories ❤❤
Really enjoyed this video!! Milking in a tie stall barn is how we did it. LOVE the cows being out on pasture!! That is where they were made to be, living their best life.
Thank you for watching Tom!
I know farming is ruff right now. You guys hang in there. We as viewers will try to help your channel to help you! Keep up the great work guys. You are showing the newest generation what farming is! Thank you and God bless!!
I milked cows for 45 years. There was never a " ruff " year. But if a person goes into dairy farming / farming total debt....yes life is expected to be ruff ! My boy just starting his 50 cow operation last year. Hes doing just fine 8000 dollars per month. Its what you do with that income !
Real farming. You know the cows and they know you
I used to go help bring in the cows now and then, on my relatives farm. It is so great to see clean cows, on pasture, raised and treated the way they were meant to be. So different than the big industrialized dairy operations. I hope there is always a place for small family dairy and lifestock farms like yours.
Agreed Keith, Thank You!
@@GierokFarms When all of the small family dairy farms are gone, forced out by the big dairy industry. we will have lost something so valuable. None but those who have lived the life, and, seen and felt it, and, smelled it, have a real appreciation for what will be lost. It Youttube can help to keep you going, god bless you.
@@keithkuckler2551 God Bless!
I used to milk, a different sort of parlour though, really enjoyed the video, a gentler way of life, thanks guys.
This brings back memories of the past tied up stalls, pipe line milking.
Each cow had own personal style only the dairy man could tell
Fantastic video.
Thanks
Thanks Allan!
In terms of style you mean where she swatted your head with her tail?
Just add a belly strap and the Surge bucket and I’m back in my Dad’s barn. Thanks!
Enjoyed your video! Similar to a lot of your fans, I also grew up milking on the family farm 80-100 head (60s, 70s & 80s) with the surge buckets. We always seem to have a few head with serious attitude problems.
Only thing missing was the old AM radio blaring in the back ground tuned to some oldies station and the electric fence setting the beat.
Sometimes I do miss the old girls.... Then I remember the just freshend heifers and that feeling goes away.
LOL ya patients is key with heifers!
You guys have the prettiest cows on your Dairy you guys do amazing job and keep the good work and be safe out there
I am always so impressed with the udders on your cows. They are all up and tight and none hanging to the floor as happens as a cow ages. That is the "business end" so most important. I was apprehensive when I switched from stantions to tie stalls, but cows adjust so fast and it is awesome to "touch" each cow as you enter and exit them!
This brings back memories growing up. Nice to see cows on pasture.
You have the prettiest cows I have ever seen they remind me of our Dairy we had we had all different color of cows like you do
Surge bucket milker hanging on the milk house wall.... Bring backs memories. Great video.
You Bet! Thanks for watching lloyd!
Looks like our barn and how we did things back in the late 60"s & 70"s.
Nice!
Looked like Dad's barn from the 50's, with wood stations two draft horse stalls and two box stalls, but no pipelines just canned milk cooled in a water cooled cooler
@@frankdeegan8974 Sounds like a cool barn!
Thanks for the video. When I was a boy in the 70s and 80s we had a similar barn except we had stanchions. Milked about the same amount of cows. Have great memories of getting the cows off the pasture and leading them to the barn. There is just something so cool about that!
Cows on pasture is a wonderful thing! Thanks for watching Dave!
Just watched this video again. Still one of my favorites. I love how peaceful it is and love to see your milking process. So good!!!!!!
Very nice and clean barn that’s one thing I always took pride in is having a nice clean barn keep up the good work
Thanks Jeff and I agree a clean work place is something to be proud of!
Enjoyed this video very much. My dad had 24 head of cattle and milked in a barn with stanchions back in the late forties/early fifties. He originally milked a good few of them by hand, but that got pretty difficult. I remember going down to the barn and loved hearing them being milked and listening to Gene Autry on the radio. When I was young I once made the mistake of wondering into a small group of young heifers, must have scared them because I was knocked down and then I ended up in the milk-house getting washed down. Still loved them, though.
Later he had to give up the farm and we moved to a different place, but he still had to have one cow to milk, which he did when he returned from work in the morning (worked nights at a dairy) and then before he left for work. Can remember Molly mooing because he was a little late getting home. He loved doing it and was one of the strongest small men I can remember. He also had a couple of draft horses for field work, but had bought a John Deere before I got to ride them. Anyway thanks for the memories.
Love it, you guys do everything just the way we did on our dairy in upstate New York 40 years ago. 😀
From the tie stall barn to the pipeline milkers, to the throwing down lime on the floors! All you need to complete the look is the one legged milking stools that my dad and uncle wore to save your knees.
We've switched over to beef cows since '83 so no more milking but thanks for the memory trip, you guys are awesome.
Thanks for watching Eugene! Never seen a milking stool in action!
Great memories. I did that with my dad in the sixties and seventies. Love it.
Thanks Alain!
Thank you taking us along with you milking cow 🐄
I just love that added touch of the cowbells. I was always fascinated that the cows learn there "spots". Ours know theirs too. No boss cows once they are in the barn.
It's nice when they line up for us!
Good memories. Thanks Guys.
Thank you Benjamin!
Nice set up you got there. I love how the cows are so clean when they are on pasture.
Thanks Lynden!
Love the old time bells on cows !!!
Beautiful clean , thoughtful, and calm operation. Thank you for sharing.
Wonderful video...takes me back to growing up on our farm in Wisconsin. Thank you so much!
Thanks again for watching!
Love the sound of those cow bells!! You guys work your butts off!!
Great video! Very well done on the video production, and it is refreshing to see a nice, clean family operation such as your family's. Looking forward to your next video. They bring back many memories from when I was able to do more on the farm. Thanks for sharing!
Thanks for Watching Mike!
My life back till 1979 great job and I hope that you have good success.
That’s exactly how ours was when I was a little kid. It’s like you recorded our place 45 years ago. I love it. Happy cows. Thank You
I'm glad we could bring back good memories thank you so much for watching!
@@GierokFarms great channel. I look forward to watching
Love this video and your farm. It reminds me of a bygone era - your operation is very similar to how things were at my grandparents farm here in PA. They sold their heard back in the early 80’s. Watching this brings back so many good memories. Thanks for sharing your farm life with us! God bless.
we are glad we could bring back good memories! Thank You for watching!
Absolutely loved this video. Beautiful rolling land, happy & healthy cows eating pasture grass and love your St. Bernard too. Thank you for posting. Brought a smile on my face.
My father in-law (who has passed away) had a "smaller" farm too. Cows all knew what stanchions to go to. No pipeline. Used a dumping station. Absolutely loved spending time there and helping. Miss those days.
Thank you Scott, Mariska is a great dog! I'm glad we could bring back memories of your father in laws farm, Thanks again for watching!
The person behind the camera has a very good eye for photography. Enjoyed this video immensely.
Thank you Denis! We are glad to hear you enjoyed it!
Loved the video..I used to be a dairy farmer. Makes me miss the cattle
Love the video. I am very thankful that we have good farmers like you. God bless
Thank you!
good and clean
You guys are awesome god bless you some day i will be like you guys Take care amigos
I grew up on a farm in Wisconsin much like your brings back some good memories
I'm glad we could bring back good memories!
That reminds me of how Mom and Dad farmed, it’s sad the small farmers can’t survive in these days. We loose so much by the detachment from our food
It is sad! Thanks for watching James!
Absolutely beautiful barn!… I didn’t expect anything less from you guys:) thanks for the video
Thanks again Andy!
Hearing those bells all the time would drive me nuts
I still help out on a 400 cow dairy to keep a tie to the cows but I really miss the 40 cow herd at my first job. There were also 500 sheep there. We milked in stanchions with a manger in the middle. I remember how warm the cow stable was on a cold winter day. We used Delaval milker buckets and a sputnik to carry milk to the bulk tank.
Great video, reminds me of my grandparents farm in the reedsburg area.
Thanks Matthew!
Your cows look so happy well fed and attended to. You all clearly love your work and it shows. Great video
Thank You!
Other then the beautiful sound it makes, why do you have a bell on each cow? Beautiful clean barn. Great video.
We have the bells on cows to carry on a swiss tradition, and it also helps us locate cattle on pasture! Thank you!
Love the sound of the cow bells! Great video! Thanks!
Me too, Thanks Donald!
It always amazes me that they would go to the same stall without any coaxing unless of course it was the first calf heifers and you’d have to train him for 2 to 3 weeks before they would realize where they had to go but it brings back a lot of memories never had a pipe line Milker and I love to have a quarter for every pail of milk I carried over 20 years years
Ya training those heifers in can be a real challenge but in the end its worth it! Now milking with just buckets is something I would like to see! Thanks for watching Terry!
You are living my dream of dairy farming.
Nice looking herd! I milked in a stanchion barn for 40 years. Not many sill doing it like this anymore.
Thank You Pete!
I’m really enjoying your videos! 🙂
Your farm is beautiful
and your cattle are so calm.
Thank You!
Beautiful cows, you take a lot of pride in your farm and it shows. Thanks for sharing
Thank you
Thanks for watching Brad!
interesting to see the different breeds in the same herd, usually its only 1 breed or the other. Always watched my uncle bring his in when it was milking time, it is so amazing its always the same cow that comes in 1st when the door is open and the others follow her in. My uncle milked about 50-60 b4 he retired all Holsteins(not registered but good blood lines-he raised most of his herd from calves) that were born on his farm, stanchion barn
The different breads keeps it interesting! sounds like he had an operation to be proud of! Thank you for watching Darren!
@@GierokFarms it was in the family for 4 generations, he had everything pretty much like you except the pipeline system. He tried a used one but took it out because it used too much water. I know their milk got the highest rating also, he rented a few other farms for his replacement and young stock and for hay. with all animals included(calves, heifers etc) i think he had around 100-110 animals in total and even had his own Bull which i know is unheard of pretty much nowadays, of course he moved them after 2-3 yrs because like i am sure you know they can be very unpredictable as they got older. When my grandpa had the farm he started out with Milking shorthorns then transitioned to holstiens. My uncle never kept the Red Holstiens because I guess they just didnt milk like the Black and White Holstiens
What an amazing view, it brings worm to my heart! Those beautifull green hills, the sunshine, the chomp of the cows in the silence of nature, the cirping birds... The sound of the bells, the calm walk, it's all how it should be... it brings good memories to my mind :)
God bless you and the work you put in to make these animals happy!
A happy new subscriber! Keep it up :D
nice dog
There is one cow that you have in your herd. She looks like she could be part Holstein but the black coloring is almost faded. I assume she is a crossbred. She sure seems friendly and loves being on your camera phone. She almost looks like a landrace or lineback breed. Very interesting coloring. Sure enjoy your channel, farm and cattle. You guys have pride in what you do. I used to help relatives on their dairies so I know the amount of work in dairy farming.
Nice clean barn cows look great I awesome you milk twice a day? Thanks for the great videos guys 👍🐄🐄🐄🇺🇸🇺🇸
Thanks again Keith!
New to your channel. Awesome farm! Keep up the good work. Be safe!
I never saw a farm video where all of the cows had a bell.
Welcome and thank you for watching the video! We will do our best!
Loving your videos! I did a quick scroll and didn't see this video. I was wondering if you guys would show how you handle milking a first calf heifer for the first time! Would love to see the process and talking about the steps you take prior to their first calving to get them used to handling/you!
Great video, now that's the way farming is supposed to be, not all these mega farms!! I see things have changed no more water solution for cleaning udders(no more really chapped hands) bells are ok, but it would drive me nuts. Lol
Lol You get use to the bells, Thanks again for watching Ted!
nice video and nice clean barn and cows!
Thank you!
neat video y'all are old school I guess y'all are used to the bells but it would drive me crazy haha would be especially rough with a hangover haha. clean barn clean cows great job keep up the good work
Thank you Randy!
So much work!
I found out what life was all about on my dairy farm.
Just a great video. Happy, clean cows just doin there thing.
Thanks Rod!
I used like bringing the cows in for milking almost every cow new her spot but there was always 2 that thought they had to go in the same stall
I hear ya Mark some of those cows can be so stubborn LOL!
The gray cow, a pure Holstein or a cross.
Enjoyed the video, thanks! 👍
I'm glad to hear that, thank you so much for watching!
Love the cow bells in the pasture, not so much in the barn. Great video!
Thanks David!
those bells would put me over the edge lol
wow....I've never seen a "gray" Holstein !
They are pretty!
Absolutely love it!
Thank You!
MORE COWBELL!!!!
New to channel we use to milk for around 20 plus years never milked in a barn like that i have milked 2 at time 4 at a time 8 at a time and 12 at a time always loved the bypass parlor the best i know you must have a reason for the bells i dont think i could stand that all the time every day lol i dont think i would like milking in a barn like that but its all in what you get use too that just looks like it would be hard your back bending over all the time but you all have a very nice farm love the videos i put down lime in our free stalls every other day also in calf pens
Welcome James! We use the bells only during the summer, it is mainly just a swiss tradition but it is also nice for located cattle on pasture if need be. How large is your heard? Thanks for watching the videos!
Enjoyed seeing this milking video. Was wondering why each cow has a bell? It sounds nice when they are walking into the barn, but I'm sure they have a purpose.
It helps us locate them on pasture and It is a tradition!
Awesome looking cows brings back memories of milking on my parents farm what a good life
I'm glad we could bring back memories for you John!
@@GierokFarms when I would walk in my Dad's barn I could still see the cows standing in it

Great video
Thank you!
Just a thought. Could a drop spreader help instead of shaking the bags by hand?
Good videos. Keep em coming!
Great video.
Thanks!
Awesome video. Everything is the way it ought to be!
How many do you milk?
In that video 47. Thanks again for watching!
Great video. Brings back memories. Used a pipe line system. How many cows are you milking ? How many times a day do you milk?
In that video 47, twice a day! Thanks for watching!
Ayos bro👌👌..dairyfarmer din ako dito sa japan..vlog din ng kaonti 😬😬

good job milking
Great video. Can you share your rolling herd average?
Late to the party on this one....would luv to see more milking videos as well as a explanation of the whole procedure
Are the cows out in pasture all winter??
Welcome glad you found it! we could do that! We keep them in the barn during the winter!
Really like the bells really relaxing to listen to good looking herd you guys do a good job 👍
Very nice and clean barn & cows looking nice as well .. I would bed the cows a little sawdust it's the best ..
Thank You, In the winter they get bedding but during the summer they are only in the barn for milking so it's not that necessary then!
Ok yeah that makes sense..
love it . except for the bells and added music.
Thanks for watching at least!
The Bells I enjoy But agree I’m not too big on
a lot of music in videos. I have to mute during
music. But I’m loving this dairy farming channel.
@@drk218 Thanks for watching Rae
Question to be addressed, HOW do cows know which is their stall?
How happy we were when pipeline arrived!
The pipeline is nice!
How many head are milked? Twice a day? All milked on the milk line? You feed any cottonseed? We had a small (25 head) stanchion barn when I was a kid. Great memories!
Beautiful video!
Thank You!
You should make more videos working with the cows and your calfs & the heifers..
What is the white powder that you pour on the concrete floor.........
Nice operation! Well done.
Thank You!
