Wow, been reading all the complaints even from Harley owners, and here is my two cents worth, I'm 62, rode dirt bikes as a teenager only, 3 years ago acquired (thats free) a 2007 Honda shadow, got my license rode 15 thousand miles 2 seasons, upgraded last October to a 2016 Street Glide Special, my wish list is about 4 grand with most of the 8 listed, I started with the most important things first, for me safety, extended brake pedal for my size 13 boots, the rest will come in time, without preventing me from riding. So here is the point, I knew what I was getting into and the on going costs associated with it, I could have just as easily bought a brand new Honda Gold Wing for the same money and like the Shadow drove it trouble free till.....ever. Owning a motorcycle is a personal thing, doesn't matter the brand, he will always change, adjust or add, to help make him one with the road, thats why we ride! To me it's a Harley!
That's right. There's really almost no upgrades for a Goldwing or a BMW r18, because they already have great brakes, great power, great handling, great seats, etc... But where's the fun in that? They are too quiet though and a Goldwing would be more fun with a supercharger. But they still wouldn't have the street cred or p***y magnate power of a Harley. Wanna ride alone, fine, get a Goldwing. Wanna have a smokin hot Chola Mamacita on the back? Harley's the only way... Unless I could get my hands on the first real bike I ever rode, a 65 Cushman Eagle & modify that with a "Softail" rear suspension, S&S two litre engine, & taller front wheel with a proper springer front suspension. That would be a good made in USA substitute for a Harley.
I like HD motorcycle a lot. So, I went to visit a local HD dealership and they wanted to charge me a lot over MSRP. So, I eventually bought a 1/12 scale model and I have become a happy owner now ever since.
I’ve literally did all of those plus the bonus items. Again none of it is a must. Harley makes a great bike but they leave a lot of room for improvement, and to get the most out of it and have the best riding experience... handle bars you like, a good seat, and at least a great headlight are a minimum in my book.
I've never bought a brand new bike but rather have bought an HD with low miles, no damage, plus all or most of these 8 mods. Show up with cash and negotiate a great price. But if you got the finances buy it new and add whatever fits your style. Either way ride the skid! Kudos to J&P for the suggestions.

When we watch BMW s1000rr video, we don't hear things like suspension is bad so you need to upgrade as soon as you buy them. Why? Because it is a premium bike that charges people premium price. Great video did all that on my 2018 street glide special but rear shocks that's next especially since I had to buy new back tire and changed out oil pump but glad I now have 2020 oil pump in .
When I bought my 1st new Harley 1979FXEFB I paid $3875.00 now you can't get a Sportster for that. The cruisers are running 30K and up and that has been the beef on Harley's ever since I can remember and especially back when I bought my 79 Shovel $3700 to $4500 was a lot of money especially since the quality wasn't there. The newest bike I own is a 2001 FLH Standard did a lot of upgrades 95 inch, suspension, carb and exhaust, cams and handle Bars and I wouldn't hesitate to ride it coast to coast it hasn't failed me yet I have sat on the side of the road with guys on brand new bikes waiting on the tow to the nearest dealer.
Personally I wouldn’t bother with the intake pipes and tuner especially on a bagger as the $ to gain is not good . The suspension upgrades for me add more to the bike in terms of performance as the bike handles so much better and you can ride harder in comfort. Other than that getting the bike to fit you pegs, bars levers ,seat etc is just one of the joys of ownership and keeps me out of the wife’s feet.
Front and rear suspension is a big plus in comfort and increasing lean angle with proper spring rates. Cams, pipes, intake, made all the diff on my 2011 RK. Depending on the year, cams only may not be as significant of an improvement.
Good, concise info. Always enjoy JP presentations. Agree with 7 of 8. Before the seat, I'd change out the compensator. Darkhorse ManOwar or solid gear. Good thing you didn't get the oil debate started.
My $21k Road Glide turned into a $30k Road Glide after my must haves. Wife asked “why get a Harley of you have to change everything?” I said “well I just can’t move to a Honda just yet” Want a Harley, ya gotta be prepared to change everything on the bike. It’s designed that way unfortunately.
I would say one of the biggest upgrades that could be done on a Harley is upgrading the crappy plastic fuel inlet elbow on the carburetor to a full brass one. Every Harley I have ever worked on leaks from that fitting.
Yes spending 30 to $50,000 to get 60 HP then spend another 10 on accessories. To be different just like everybody else with the Harley skull Derby cover and Davy Crockett leather tassels and Harley boots pants panties socks nipple rings shirt gloves hat and glasses. You know really set yourself aside from the crowd.
Only problem with installing an aftermarket tuner on a new Harley is it will void the factory power train warranty so I would be careful with that. Personally my first upgrade was adding a Saddlemen seat, next upgrade was stage 1 intake exhaust and tuner so I voided mine within a week, :-) 3rd was a windsheild I went with a Windvest.
I have had two or three clutch cables break at the handle and one handle brake it's a good idea on old bikes to replace the cable it's no fun to drive with out a clutch and a little dangerious carry one for back up on long trips😐
It's ridiculous that Harley doesn't manufacture their own quality front and rear suspensions for the money they charge for their bikes. The only thing premium on a Harley is its paint and some hard parts. The engines are budget build engines and the suspensions are cheapo.
1st Thing. Don't get a bike that still can't keep the oil in the crank case. 2, stay away from companies that have 2x the lawyers than engineers. 3rd, DEFINITELY never purchase a motorcycle from a TEE SHIRT SHOP.
Lighting probably Handlebars depends, I'm not buying another with handlebars don't fit me Stock performance is the way to go.......but those that sell performance "upgrades" don't make easy money
Hello I have a 2009 harley fatboy softial and was wondering was thinking of going either with windsheild but really liked the looks of front fairing with radio and speakers . Looking for thoughts and ideas. It's my first harley . Thank you
How about oil cooler? Heard alot about clutches burning up in big city traffic jams and oil don't rust metal like the water cooled they try to put on bikes now days.
As always: GOOD STUFF. Looks like sturgis location . Is J&P open year around there this year ? Last June I bought me place in sturgis. But I wimped on riding weather and S west I’m , Daytona then back sturgis.
Instead of just upgrading your H.D. engine, replace it with an S&S. Also the transmission. While you're at it, replace the frame with a high-performance aluminum alloy one. Toss off those crappy tires and wheels as well. If anything original to the bike remains, replace that with genuine J&P parts. Now, you're ready to ride!
I did all that to mine except for the cam and the seat but I did add forward controls and a different front end I had to sell it to save my house from going into foreclosure so sad
Hello I am a old guy and want to ride but think a trike might be best for old farts like me. what ya think and can ya talk about the good and bad about trikes?
@@jpcycles HAHA not building anything.. Just bolting stuff on. If you need to ride your Harley in the rain, don’t use mod number two - that air filter won’t handle much, if any, water. One thing they do not mention, that can be important (especially for women) is changing out the clutch and brake handles for ones with better leverage. The wind protection is a must, as was noted in the video - get a windshield or fairing with hand protection, that reaches to a height at the top or just below the top of your helmet, so that you can see over it in heavy rain (or heavy bug coatings), but you can hunker down behind it in the rain.
Just replaced the ecm with a thundermax. I set parameters and put it on autotune. It is backfiring hard, running rich and it sound like a single cylinder when idling. I am super pissed
Yep a bone stock HD bagger has junk suspension, seat handlebars etc. should change the name to Hundred Dollar. Because as soon as the bug bites you those hundos start flying out of your pocket.
I've recently purchased an '01 Wide Glide and the mod I am leaning towards first is to get rid of the pizza cutter front tire and put a 120 or 130 on 16 or 17 wheel. My Triumph has a 180/120 combo and it handles fantastic. The Harley feels unsteady around corners at lower speeds.
Honestly, even kicking down to the 19" wheel and tire used on low riders and super glides makes a big difference. I used a 19" for a long time as well as a factory spoked Road King wheel (with appropriate bearing and wheel spacers to make work. an FXR alloy wheel brake rotor hub cover fits perfectly on the unused brake rotor face so it doesnt look so weird. P/N 43359-84) but the 130 will make the front end a bit more mopey into corners. Planted? Very, almost too much so. Lots of used wheels out there, play around and find what you like!
@@tnhunts2759 First, thanks for the detailed response. I will likely wait until early summer to make a decision. I only have about 100 miles on it and weather will not be my friend here. Once I get a chance to play with it I will have a better idea of what to do. Honestly, if I end up with the smaller rim, I'll probably look into a dual disc setup for the front. Cheers, and again, thanks.
I'm safety first when it comes to upgrades. Anything after that, like Stage 1/2 is gravy. My first choices are (if needed} LED lights everywhere so cars can see me coming a mile away. Then upgraded brakes, windshield, handlebars and a seat. Quite often on used bikes, I'll replace floor boards and brake pedal pad and shift pegs too because many times some idiot put some very shiny and insanely dangerously slippery aftermarket garbage on the bike.
Have always wondered as a gear head... why produce any vehicle with upgrades needed? . My truck performance improved alot with just a K& N cold air intake. I took a large boxfull of molded plastic crap off and replaced with a short curved tube and filter. About 15 h.p. gain and 3 to 4 mpg gain. Why does Harley install crappy shocks and seats? Customers want better....make it!
First is the shift linkage... It will fall apart within the first year of owning your New Problem. Second, Go back and ask Nicely for a Refund.. The crankshaft run out will be your next problem, if the front cylinder Jug doesn't Crack at the base. The so called Cubic Inch for the Engine, is how many Problems Plus Recalls your going to deal with..
The insanity of buying a 20k dollar bike, and needing to immediately put another 2-5k into it to just make it comfortable, a modicum of modern power, and ease of riding is insane to me.
Every motorcycle rider does this to some degree or another, though I have run into people that refuse to do it then complain about specific issues while riding their motorcycle, no matter what brand it is. "I wish it sounded deeper(or louder)", "I wish the handle bars were a bit closer to me", "I wish this seat was more comfortable", "I wish I had a windshield to block some of the bugs" "I wish they put better shocks on this thing" Whatever the issue I have heard people complain about it. Then I tell them what I did to my motorcycle and they say the same thing you do "Man it is crazy you spent money on your brand new motorcycle to change it like that", True but now it is the way I want it and I don't constantly complain about the issues you do.
@@Evirthewarrior No i understand the idea of customizing any vehicle, i'd imagine to an extent we all do it with every vehicle. It's that with Harley, you NEED to in order to have a borderline functional motorcycle. Like, some of these are just things that should come factory.
@@teceit That simply isn't true, you don't need to do anything. I didn't modify my Harley for almost a year and it rode fine, I just wanted a more comfortable seat, different levers, and louder pipes. I still have stock handlebars and shocks, breaks and everything else, it handles amazingly for a cruiser. It is a Street Glide Special and I cant think of a thing that I would change on it.
@@Evirthewarrior Except it is true. The engine being the size it is, and borderline anemic. The suspension being washy and soft creating multiple problems on many of their platforms. I guess that's what happens when you get your bikes made in thailand, claim american brand, and charge 20k,30k, or even 40k. I mean hell, what do i expect from a brand that names a bike for the Hiroshima bombing.
@@teceit You have no idea what you are talking about the the 114 is plenty powerful. You need to get into the 1000CC oil cooled bikes to really start to see a major difference in power. In 1997 I bought a Honda Magna. It is in perfect condition today And I am preparing to take a 2500 mile " ride'.5000 miles is My longest. I have street raced Many Harley Davidson bikes. Not a Street Rod. Ok. I have Never lost a race to bikes All done up with stage 3 Screaming eagle kits. So........ Skip the 8 steps and buy a Decent motorcycle. Nothing Against Harley it's just that They are heavy and slow.
When I bought my first Harley....the first things I changed were: higher risers, and adding forward foot pegs (I have long arms and legs), the next thing I changed was the seat...I got a Saddleman seat: this seat moved my body forward about 1 - 2 inches over the stock one and now the forward foot controls are just the right length, then I changed the exhaust...by that time...all of the parts of my stage IV kit came in as it was on backorder and I had the Dealership install it, along with a completely different intake. Now it sounds like a Harley instead of a Sewing Machine...and it's acceleration is now decent and the bike fits my body. I later added Moons LED MC tail light, Viking Saddle Bags, Rogue Rider LED front turn signals, and I added a ventilated dipstick cap from DK Customs to reduce blowby. Ergonomics (get the bike to fit you), Safety (a louder exhaust so the drivers texting on their phones will notice) and LED lights (they're brighter use less amps resulting in a lower electrical load), I also replaced the lead acid stock battery with a Harley Lithium Ion Battery (better cranking power) and about 8 lbs lighter.

My $42K 2015 Road Glide CVO turned into a $60K+ CVO and still climbing, over the last 5 years and 119K miles.
I would say one of the biggest upgrades that could be done on a Harley is upgrading the crappy plastic fuel inlet elbow on the carburetor to a full brass one. Every Harley I have ever worked on leaks from that fitting.
It really comes down to only 1 change you need to implement. 1st. Just don't buy a hardly motorcycle. There u go.
Very good info, always something to do with the bike.
Engine guards front and back must be the very first modification. LED lights all around are a must. Love my Custom Dynamics turn lights.
Modifying a Harley is what keeps them interesting and unique.
Just like they say, you are unique....
Just like everybody else.
And expensive
Yes spending 30 to $50,000 to get 60 HP then spend another 10 on accessories. To be different just like everybody else with the Harley skull Derby cover and Davy Crockett leather tassels and Harley boots pants panties socks nipple rings shirt gloves hat and glasses. You know really set yourself aside from the crowd.
@@markallen4364 Right….” They all do that, you need an update kit “.
I think the 1st thing I would do is trade it for a Yamaha or kawasaki.
We make videos so you don't need warranty's :D
You didn’t even break it in before voiding the warranty thats bold
Ya rode mine home and cut the cat out that day, didn’t want their warranty anyway, my bikes don’t go back to the dealer.
You mean that pathetically short warranty they give? They don’t believe in the reliability of their products anyway.
I have had two or three clutch cables break at the handle and one handle brake it's a good idea on old bikes to replace the cable it's no fun to drive with out a clutch and a little dangerious carry one for back up on long trips😐
The biggest bang for buck performance option upgrades on a H-D is a set of BST carbon wheels !!!
Thanks from France 🇫🇷
It's ridiculous that Harley doesn't manufacture their own quality front and rear suspensions for the money they charge for their bikes. The only thing premium on a Harley is its paint and some hard parts. The engines are budget build engines and the suspensions are cheapo.
true- harley's look and sound good and that is about it
So cool that you have to put $2000 in your $20000 bike. Thanks HD
Yep 100% on all of it!
Some of this depends on how old your buke is. My 96 road King was loud enough right from the factory.
How about a softail '05 injected '88' without O2 sensors? What tuner do I use?
30K for a bike and another 15K to do upgrades lol just nuts but hey its your ride.
Never buy new. Let the first guy take that hit!
@@donsvideos1985 I thought I was the only one who thought like that. lol
@@TechnMoto especially when it comes to Used Harleys. Lots of low mileage garage queen's out there 😎
1st Thing. Don't get a bike that still can't keep the oil in the crank case. 2, stay away from companies that have 2x the lawyers than engineers. 3rd, DEFINITELY never purchase a motorcycle from a TEE SHIRT SHOP.
So many people through a ton of money at performance they forget about stopping that performance.
I have a 21 Street-Bob…what aftermarket exhaust would you recommend and would I definitely need to tune it?
Hey, where can I get them small turn indicators?
Lighting probably
Handlebars depends, I'm not buying another with handlebars don't fit me
Stock performance is the way to go.......but those that sell performance "upgrades" don't make easy money
It's must be so nice to live in the wilderness.😊 I love it ❤.
First thing I’d change is the bike itself!
Hello I have a 2009 harley fatboy softial and was wondering was thinking of going either with windsheild but really liked the looks of front fairing with radio and speakers . Looking for thoughts and ideas. It's my first harley . Thank you
Go with memphis shades road warrior and a plex audio system! That's what I have on my 20 fxlrs! So good!
Agree, Memphis Shades as multiple quick release fairing options. www.jpcycles.com/memphis-shades
How about oil cooler? Heard alot about clutches burning up in big city traffic jams and oil don't rust metal like the water cooled they try to put on bikes now days.
Awesome video on advice. Thx
How about the terrible side stand? Are there better after market options.
I’ll got those exact mini kuriakyn front ligths on my 2020 Sportster 48, and ever since I’ve got the light code on!
Light code?
Great video! Love it.
As always: GOOD STUFF. Looks like sturgis location . Is J&P open year around there this year ? Last June I bought me place in sturgis. But I wimped on riding weather and S west I’m , Daytona then back sturgis.
Yes the Sturgis store is open year round now.
🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣 what idiots !!!!! All I did for my Ducati multistrada was put gas in it !!!!!
I did all that to mine except for the cam and the seat but I did add forward controls and a different front end I had to sell it to save my house from going into foreclosure so sad
Couldn't agree more! 🙌
1st thing is put a set of Progressive shocks, the sportster shocks are trash.
I have a 2006 Harley Davidson Is electric glide standard , Carbureted, With cams and mufflers.
Hello I am a old guy and want to ride but think a trike might be best for old farts like me. what ya think and can ya talk about the good and bad about trikes?
What about the engine guard?
Mine came with it.. I guess they are charging extra for some of those now :/
Happy New year 🍾
Spend $30K and then go to J&P and dump another $10K :) What a deal! HD and the afterMarket Companies are the best buddies at your expense.
Or just leave it 100% boring and stock. Of course you are missing the fun of building your own one off machine....
Bend over and grab your ankles, cause this is gonna hurt! lol
@@jpcycles HAHA not building anything.. Just bolting stuff on. All of these upgrades will cost about how much?
What's the exhaust you show? Cheers
Wider tire makes it harder to corner. If it feels unsteady, it’s the suspension or it’s you.
Basically replace the whole bike with after market from J P cycle parts 🤣
Only change 1 thing when buying a Harley.
Your mind.
Customers want better....make it!
if there is 8 things you should change right away on a premium motorcycle you should change brands
New harley
- new seat
- new shocks
- new brakes
Wtfreak
The bike is designed for comfort and cruising down the road.
You are probably a guy that looks at an SUV and compares it to a Supra and calls the SUV a bad vehicle because the Supra has a better power to weight ratio.
Well done 👍
Don’t forget a Dixxon flannel
The first thing is your choice in bikes
Growing out the beard 1 month before purchasing. So you can look the part while you flip people off in traffic.
In 1997 I bought a Honda Magna.
It is in perfect condition today
And I am preparing to take a
2500 mile " ride'.5000 miles is
My longest. I have street raced
Many Harley Davidson bikes.
Not a Street Rod. Ok. I have
Never lost a race to bikes
All done up with stage 3
Screaming eagle kits. So........
Skip the 8 steps and buy a
Decent motorcycle. Nothing
Against Harley it's just that
They are heavy and slow.
What’s the difference between a Harley and a Hoover?
Spot on💯
HD rear suspension is laughably bad. sad for the price of our bikes.
