Kim Junghwan is a bit of a personal role model for me. I don’t think I could fence like him, but I’ve only ever heard good things about the kind of person he is. His perseverance and dedication are legendary. Also love the GOAT scream.

Kim Junghwan is at our club this week as a guest coach for our summer camp. My son had the privilege of taking a lesson with him, and he truly is remarkable. Gentle, patient, insightful and always smiling, he made the lesson fun and intense.
The Korean Team completed the past 7 seasons as the #1 ranked team in the world, per FIE, and could make it 8 in row depending on how they do at the Paris Olympics. During their streak at #1, they won 4 world championships in a row and the Tokyo Olympics. As Slicer said in this documentary, it started at the 2017 Leipzig World Championships. Their toughest challenge was in the semis against Team USA: Eli Dershwitz, Daryl Homer and Jeff Spear. The US jumped out to a 5-1 start. Kim Junghwan was the 2nd leg and flipped the lead with an incredible 9-1 outing, making it 10-6 Korea. In the final leg, Korea was trailing 38-40. The anchors were Homer and Oh. At 44-44, Oh's cut was parried, but his blade still turned the light on. Homer's riposte hit Oh just below the waist of Oh's lamé. Homer fell face down on the piste and refused to get up. According to Kim Junghwan, had Homer made his light turn on, Kim believes the point would have been Homer's.
In the finals, Korea faced Hungary. Szilagyi had won his second Olympic Gold and was ranked in the top 3, I think, and Szatmari had just won individual gold at the same event. Korea demolished Hungary 45-22. If i remember correctly, Kim Junghwan played a critical role with an insane indicator (point differential).
He the led this team to win Gold at the 2018 Wuxi World Champs beating Italy 45-22.
Oh may have been the monster/terminator, Gu may have outranked Kim Junghwan, and KimJunho may have had the most exciting athletic style, but our hero was the heart and soul of this Korean Team.
Standing only 5'10" with a very slender frame, his success comes from his incredible grit, high fencing IQ, technical abilities, and his relish of tactical mind games.
I hope he fully recovers from his hamstring and arm injuries and continues to show the world how someone with average physical attributes and beyond their prime can continue to shine at the highest levels of competition.

Great doc! Solid character development points with an arch of rise, fall, rise, of the hero ending with him being mature enough through learned humility to take on the role of mentor. You beat the trash that hollywood is cranking out these days.

It seems like using a heating pad and then a forge to cant the blade would work (my club had a bunch of saber fencers who liked blades with a wicked forward 'cant' or bend).
Interesting video, mind doing a foil re-wire lecture when you have the chance?
