I really enjoy Errigo's sabre fencing. Smart in the 4m, great distance, great point control. I didn't realize this was the reason she stopped fencing sabre. The Italian fencing federation didn't take a woman's ability seriously enough and also were corrupt with selecting the national coach's daughter. Well done video, i learned a lot!

      well isn't that interesting....
i wonder why they did this and then why the decision to select the coach's daughter... so so amusing (in some ways) - people who owed other people big time didn't think there would be consequences... interesting... and to fall on their own sword so well ...

@@albertbresca8904 There was a huge outcry from the Italian fencing team (as to be expected). The Italian team following this debacle requested that Andrea Cipressa get kicked off (Erica Cipressa's father and the national foil coach). Which is exactly what happened. They then got Stefano Cerioni back, and in all honesty I think that's a more than adequate trade.

@@xDinomanx glad to hear that .. thanks for update - that is what i would expect mind you that doesn't often happen enough - like the recent debacle in Australia where the netball assoc had secured 15 mill private sponsorship but one of the players objected to the sponsor due to something her father had said about her race 30 years previously and a whole bunch of reactionaries got involved and the sponsor withdrew the funding offer ... netball was apparently already 7 mill in debt....
cerioni.. that was an awesome swap....

@@albertbresca8904 Yeah Cerioni was originally going to be training the French national team but Italy offered him more pay and so he ended up back with the Italians.

at that point, italy deserved to not win a gold medal at tokyo. keeping one of the best fencers off your team is a stupid move

Bro, that's highly motivating. That's some legendary status. I wish they allowed her. In boxing you win multipe titles in different weight divisions. Winning in different disciplines...that's hard asf. Respect for her for even try.

She is just amazing! She has already achieved almost all there is to achieve in foil. Considering her talent they should have let her go on to achieve great things in sabre as well. I saw her fencing sabre at a high level and it was really amazing how she outsmarted some very talented sabre fencers by doing things a foil fencer would do but a sabre fencer normally wouldn't. I think she could have brought about some interesting change to sabre fencing.
PS: I fence at veterans level in Italy (called master) and at this level is quite common to fence more than one weapon, some people even fence all three!

    Some more thoughts.
Nedo Nadi and Aldo Nadi won medals in all three weapons in the same olympics in 1920, and so did Ducret in 1924 but that was a long time ago. However, for example Edoardo Mangiarotti got medals in Epee and Foil in the same olympics in 1960, which is a bit closer to our age. The number of fencers who got olympic medals in just two weapons is much larger of course, even counting only those who did it in the same olympic games.
It should be noted that some women started in foil and then moved to epee when it was opened to women. For example Margherita Zalaffi won silver in Foil in 1988, again silver in foil in 1992, and then silver in epee in 1996 when women were first allowed. But she never competed in two weapons in the same olympics.
Arianna could have been the first woman to compete in both weapons in the SAME Olympic Games. Alas, she wasn't allowed. It's a huge shame.
Anyway, among veteran fencers it is somewhat common to compete in three weapons. My late friend Alexander Anastasov from Macedonia got gold in the World Veteran Championships in all weapons more than once. Also, paralimpic athletes often fence in 2 or 3 weapons.
But in the main competition... no one is able to any more. What a pity.

What the hell is wrong with the Italian federation? Just let people compete on whatever they want. Also, I call my epee a sword, because it sounds cool. My entire mentality with fencing over the past few months has been "I have a sword, that guy has sword, let's poke each other with them" and I haven't fenced this well in years.

Épée just means sword in french. In the fencing hispanic community we also use the word espada (sword in Spanish) for the épée.
I believe the use of the word weapon it's to remind new student to be careful and to not play with them or practice without the equipment, specially without the use of mask during peer exercises/ drills.

I started fencing epee a couple of years ago. Then about 6 months ago(ish) I started cross-training in saber and more recently I started competing in both. But made the decision not that long ago to focus more in saber, but still training (and may still) compete in epee.

I fence with both Saber and Épée, but the strangest part is that I fence Épée left-handed and Saber right-handed as to not mix up the footwork, and I'd say it works great for me to keep in-practice with both disciplines.

That is so wrong to make her choose which weapon to fence in. after all there are coaches who are master of all three - it does feel like its gender centric this decision. They should have let her try to achieve her end goal with 2 weapons and if she didnt succeed at least she tried. It might make the fencing world even more interesting.

The US would not allow a male Pentathlete compete in epee (I think it was '88 Olympics) and there a few days between the end of one event and the start of the other. Then there was the question of whether a woman could compete in the Olympics wearing a hijab. She did and didn't overheat as was feared. Mattel rewarded her with a Barbie doll in her image complete with sabre. Imagine a two weapon champion. I would hold both of them up as role models to the girls I teach.

Fencing seems like one of those sports where women could compete with men as its a skill and speed sport without full contact.
I'd like to see it more in sports where it makes sense.

At lower levels (at least where I'm from) there are mixed events. At those levels women can definitely compete with men and it's good training for them to do so. But once you get to elite levels the gap is just too much.

there is too much tradition in fencing only 1 weapon... she had done the hard yards and achieved the results... and appears by doing this it may have struck the other italian athletes that their sports associations don't care enough about them.....
