As someone who is new to speedruns (but loves it) I particularly loved this sentence: "If you're trying to do owlless and you get a firstie you won't be able to clip into the cage because you have too much speed."
baileysmithful Basically if you wall jump on the first frame on the owl cage you cannot clip in. What a first frame wall kick does is it keeps your momentum. So you cannot clip into said cage afterwards
To come within two minutes and twelve seconds of one of the most prestigious speedrunning WRs -- Super Mario 64 120 Star -- at SGDQ is simply amazing. That feat on speedrunning's grandest stage is actually more impressive than his WR run IMHO. Normally, you're doing it with only about 3,000 people watching. Cheese did this with what had to be over ONE HUNDRED THOUSAND PEOPLE watching him! I nominate this for Best Run of SGDQ 2017!
It were actually about 200.000 people watching this live on Twitch + the crowd sitting behind him. If he plays at home there are no real spectators except for twitch.
I'd say this is the most _impressive_ run imo. The commentary was insightful, but inevitably not funny or too engaging (at least as an avid follower of this game). And ye, there were over 200,000 people watching this. This was the most viewed live run on the Twitch stream for this event and the only run to actually have over 200,000 views consistently, let alone at all. EDIT: and I agree this is more impressive than his WR run. He didn't even attempt HMC BLJ on the WR. He also didn't die at all with all the crazy strats he's pulling off.
@@Malek1171 Siglemic basically pioneered 120 star. He found that trick in particular if I recall correctly. Not only is it an homage, it's also a meme.
They keep pointing out these small mistakes cheese05 makes, then you look at the time, and it's 5th best all time! Just shows how insanely good cheese is...
Just compared this to his PB... It's unbelievable how perfectly everything was working for him in his PB. He saved 8 seconds alone in being able to skip the lakitu message at the start of the run in his PB. Every trick he performed in the first few levels may have looked damn near perfect, but his PB did them all like half a second faster... I kept having to stop and resync the videos because his PB kept outpacing his marathon run by half a second to a second.
Siglemic also had the reset from the game crashing...i even remember that guy that donated that said heres 20 for a new sm64 cart XD...it was more hype imo
De Nummer1 It wasnt just one hour, it was a hundred million hours. The game didnt froze for a second, it froze for 12000 years, which means i have the slowest speedrun.
Cornbeee Just how Puncay acts. His streams are really chill and honestly, I'm glad he was on the couch because a lot of these strats are pretty complicated and time-consuming to explain. So his quick/multiple explanations of other possible strats is nice to ponder during the marathon. And his knowledge of the game really shows because of it. And the fact that he's also one of the best SM64 runners ever.
Holy shit, I never thought I'd see the day where cheese could casually get a 1:41 in a marathon. I remember back when the record was a 1:44. And now we're on the cusp of a 1:38...
Crazy that he made so many mistakes yet smashed siglemic's infamous agdq run from 2014 but 6 minutes. Shows how far things have come in such a short time
They also had no idea what invisible walls were either. Mostly, they are exposed ceiling hitboxes (yes, ceilings can be overridden by a floor, but a floor directly above another floor can override the floor and allow the ceiling to slip through), but occasionally they can be out of bounds.
Breezeless skip on TTM works because of the way walls work in SM64. To put it simply, walls have hitboxes that extend out slightly in both directions perpendicular to the wall. Whenever Mario enters the hitbox he's pushed in a direction perpendicular to the wall so he can't enter it. On two sided walls these pushing hitboxes go in either direction, so if Mario tries to walk into either side of the wall he gets pushed away from it. However on one sided walls, they both push in the same direction, so Mario enters the hitbox "behind" the wall, he'll be pushed "into" it towards the proper side. The fence on the ledge where the star is is a one sided wall with its hitboxes pointed towards the ledge to keep mario from falling off when he's on it. So if Mario can gain enough height to enter the hitbox of the wall, he'll be pushed inwards toward the ledge.
First game I ever beat as a kid. I can't believe you wrecked emergency elevator in just a few seconds while it took me 2 months to crack it as a kid ;(
he is so good at this game and what a great live run!!! still i find more entertaining for massive events runs with even more commentary and in-game knowledge like zelda runs, where the runner gives you tips through all the run. to me the best run since this kind of events started was the 4 players 100% MM run
At 15:40 a guy in the audience holds up a "1st Try!" sign when Cheese05 misses the bridge skip.
He's my hero.
At 46:30 he holds up a sign that says "0.5 A Presses!"
But an A press is an A press, you can't say it's only a half.....
Josh G-B Wrong, watch pannenkoek's video on the subject, it will leave things pretty clear.
Thot Patrol
I know, that was the joke hahaha
Josh G-B Well TJ """""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""Henry""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""" Yoshi

Paaaaaaaaaarralleeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeelllllllllllllllllllll
Uuuuuuuuuuuuuuniveeeeeerrrrrrseeeeeeeesss
I like how the couch keeps talking about nerves and heart rate while cheese is trying to speedrun the game.
As someone who is new to speedruns (but loves it) I particularly loved this sentence: "If you're trying to do owlless and you get a firstie you won't be able to clip into the cage because you have too much speed."

This was one of the most incredible things I've ever seen. cheese is a MACHINE.
This dude got what would have been the 7th best time on speedrun.com while a hundred thousand people were watching him.

Roy Goodhand I thought the EarthBound run was the best personally

A rule that must be followed. Say "Siglemic" when successfully doing that.
why?
@@Malek1171 Siglemic basically pioneered 120 star. He found that trick in particular if I recall correctly. Not only is it an homage, it's also a meme.
This guy is absolutely incredible; he is blowing my mind with all these tricks!!!!!
They keep pointing out these small mistakes cheese05 makes, then you look at the time, and it's 5th best all time! Just shows how insanely good cheese is...
I cannot get enough of these super Mario 64 runs. They are just so impressive and fun to watch.
have watched this multiple times and it never gets less incredible
At Nintendo:
"Guys, should we cap Mario's backwards speed?`"
"Nah, who cares."
That day, a dutch pancake shuddered in anticipation.
but can the pancake shudder in 0.5 A presses?
TheKittyQueen no. Hes flat
And in the DS Remake, that BLJ is GONE!
39:55 Props to that audio cut off right there. Saved headphone users all around the globe hahaha
46:53 the guy back there that screamed "YEAH WOO" for this star is my hero
Remember when McDonalds had N64s with Mario64 on them? Those were some good fuckin times.
I'd imagine the controllers were caked in grease?
Lol for a second I thought you meant as if they were happy meal toys... it took me a while to realize that you were talking about them as kiosks!
Yeah they also had Super Mario Sunshien and Gamecubes. Thats how I first got to play it, good times!!
There was one by me that had banjo kazooie. What a time it was
Super Mario Sunshien is a chinese knockoff? I wanna play some Sunshien. Sounds fun.
Holy shit that time! Only 2:22 off the WR in a marathon!!!
2 minutes :V
This run was amazing to watch live.
Next up: Watch for Rolling Rocks with 0 A presses by pannenkoek2012 in 25 hours
he really saved half an a press?
46:26 - sign in the crowd lmfao
BUILDING SPEED
FOR 12 HOURS
First we have to talk about QPUs
Taras Palczynski and parallel universes
and the matrice
Bowling
Half an A press

Do you want to make a comparison video out of that?
Darc Devel his pb is the wr
The good ol' marathon curse
Damn he beat Siglemic's time at agdq by like 7 mins.
lsvtecb18c1 and his WR is 2 mins faster than this it's 1:39:28
DAMN! that is amazing.
All those half second time saves really add up.
Siglemic also had the reset from the game crashing...i even remember that guy that donated that said heres 20 for a new sm64 cart XD...it was more hype imo
I've watched a comparison of cheese's and Siglemic's PB. cheese05 uses strats that are up to 56 seconds faster, the rest is skill.
All the times they didn't know how something worked, I knew, because I watch Pannenkoek2012.
oledakaajel
[half A press intensifies]
oledakaajel Sounds like a commercial xd
Holds perfectly true for 25:07.
Imagine if, in future, the optimal strat involves parallel universes.
That and 0x BitFS is my dream.
"But to answer that, we need to talk about parallel universes."
they need a minimum a press run in GDQ so TJ "Henry" Yoshi can get angry when people explain half a presses.
I WAS WAITING FOR THIS!
omg i got a 1:39:11
1 day, 39 hours and 11 minutes
De Nummer1 lol me too if I were to speedrun this
De Nummer1 It wasnt just one hour, it was a hundred million hours. The game didnt froze for a second, it froze for 12000 years, which means i have the slowest speedrun.
soltnelat *the record for longest playtime, yaay
soltnelat you stole that joke from a video! Lol
ITS CALLED A REFERENCE
"This is the hardest level in the game" does it easily

if you want to hear the people on the couch introduce themselves.
That moment at 39:55 when the cheering is so loud that the sound actually gets muted momentarily.
Cheese is just amazing. Such a good guy. In my top 3 all time favorite runners.
Damn Carl, nice donation
Where?

A R R I G H T S O T H I S N E X T S T A R
That pronunciation of panga tho
Lightningflamingice it's because they said a lot of puns during the speed run
I don’t really understand speedrun mechanics but I love watching them
Reader was fantastic, didnt over take the show.
Love you cheese.
46:56 Props to the guy who started the joke, the runner forgot about the classic joke on mario 64 runs
This drinking game outta send you to the hospital: Take a shot each time the crowd applauses and/or cheers.
Currently playing, will update of hospital is needed.
Their commentary sounds like they are listening to the siglemic commentary a few years back.
When the hype breaks the microphone you know it's fucking sick
i like the one who always "woooh!"s when they are applauding :D
39:56 he whooped at such a frequency that it disabled the whole streams audio for 5 seconds
In awe of the size of the lad on the chair to the right of the couch, absolute unit.
Dude, he makes this seem so easy.
Goddamn, my poor subscription box...
COMMENTING IS OVERRATED!!!
Those Bowser in the Sky throws though.
I saw this run live! It was incredible.
I like these guys' commentary, dude does something sick, their response "Not bad, pretty good..." spoiled!
Not spoiled... jealous
the fact that people are still talking about Sig says alot.
- Sig fan
although cheeses is better.. Sig was just more fun to watch his personality was better
Everyone should realize that Cheese05 is the world record holder for this game. Sub 1:40:00 times.
Wow, opens the last star door at his WR time. Excellent!
39:40 strat so amazingly good that It just broke the sound barrier 😂
"This next star is our favorite star"
what an amazing live run. PROPS. hope to see an even better one 2019.
My boy carl Sagan donating $1000 meanwhile I can't even get a text back
The guy behind and to the left of Cheese05 (hidden by head) really drained the room whenever he spoke - rest of the couch were great!

Never seen a SM64 run before this, this blew my mind
Cool thing that one guy tried to explain his entire fucking route during another speedrunners run, pretty cool, totally wanted to hear that
The Super Mario 64 120 Star runs at AGDQ/ SGDQ are by far the best runs every year :D
Nusstorias no
dodes run are more amazing and the couch is just as good
Can't believe this is seven minutes shorter than Siglemic's
That time has still only been beaten by 5 runners other than Cheese. The more you know
Holy shit, I never thought I'd see the day where cheese could casually get a 1:41 in a marathon. I remember back when the record was a 1:44. And now we're on the cusp of a 1:38...
Cheese05 and siglemic , the kings of sm64 , i like this 2 players
Watching him jump almost blindly in the beginning is giving me a heart attack. I know it's mostly muscle memory but I'm flinching every time he jumps
Crazy that he made so many mistakes yet smashed siglemic's infamous agdq run from 2014 but 6 minutes. Shows how far things have come in such a short time
You must save the princess! But First We Need to Talk About Parallel Universes
Almost a year of my childhood under 1 3/4 hours. Cheese humbled final Bowser lmao
1:56:20 if you want to see me get swerved hard on a handshake.
In all seriousness though, was a pleasure commentating this. Legendary run.
thank you for the donations
They don't know how the fence clipping works? They should watch the two part lecture series by pannenkoek2012 "Walls, Ceilings and Floors"
They also had no idea what invisible walls were either. Mostly, they are exposed ceiling hitboxes (yes, ceilings can be overridden by a floor, but a floor directly above another floor can override the floor and allow the ceiling to slip through), but occasionally they can be out of bounds.
Holy shit I went to high school with you
Jesus that was fun to watch! He made Mario look like a damn ninja lol
Watching in 2019 cheese u are the man 👏🤘👍
It was nearly an hour into the run when I realized that it was 120 starts...
Hell yeah CARL!!!!! 1000 bucks what a fuckin legend
lot of big donations this time around, good for them
He gave shoutouts to his family....
But forgot to shotout to SimpleFlips.
39:57 so much hype the mic couldnt handle it

I love watching the adventures of ninja mario :3
CARL SAGAN DONATED?! HE'S ONE OF THE BEST SUPER MARIO MAKER PLAYERS! 25:19

Hello fellow Mythical Beast!
Totally!
1:23:42 See, I knew watching Pannenkoek would come in handy!
FFS Cheese did that damn volcano so fast.... as a kid it took me a whole day to get to the top. =.=
39:00 For the best mic clip of SGDQ
Cheese! You made it to sgdq omg omg
what an incredible player
The level of control :o crazy.
12:53 for fun times
14:38 if you're just here for the run
0:00 if you're a completionist
cheese has so many nervous ticks between levels
girg guy I notice ticks easily too. I wonder if it's the game or the crowd.
It was the run of his fuggin.
I Lost the run to RNG!!!
he is so good at this game and what a great live run!!!

Absolutely awesome run.
